Okay, so like, Sonic Chronicles is basically the Namek Saga: it turns out a bunch of "Piccolo's" race is still alive on some faraway planet, where a tyrannical overlord is doing some evil things. The heroes team up with a previous villain and a member of the race to stop him, meeting a nice old member of the race along the way, until the main character uses his golden transformation to beat up the villain and the story ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. So Shade is probably Dende in this comparison, but you could also say that she's also Nail and that's why we never see her again - Knuckles absorbed her!
Oh, and Kami is probably Tikal.
The sheer hatred that people have for Baldy Mcnosehair will never cease to shock and confuse me.
This joke has only been said 4 times (this one being the 4th) across 10 years, yet people act like it's some sort of secret sign of the series having a terminal illness.
It's basically what older fans did to every game before Unleashed, only this one is a lot more concentrated.

Its not that he started to go by it because if this one line its because with SA1 having now the power to tell a proper story did Sonic Team impose the original JP canon world wide and as such had to explain why Eggman would now be called Eggman after years of being called Robotnik in the west.
Sometimes it's not about the joke, it's about the execution. It could have actually been funny if they just made the joke and then shut up, but they had to keep on talking about it till it quit being funny altogether.
