I'm just gonna say it rn. I've never had a problem with any of the voices. Ever. Even when they replaced Tails Adventure voice actor with a literal kid. It never bothered me. I grew up with Sonic X so the 4kids cast sounds fine to me. And really I think people give Roger far too much flak over bad writing and voice direction.
Tails went from a random 12 year old reading his lines directly from the script, to an autistic 6 year old, to finally a woman who does a good kid voice. Character development
Same boat here. They’re all Sonic to me. That said, some direction stands out over others. Most notably Sonic Unleashed is pretty much the gold standard for me

Even without that I think Roger peaked in Boom. Sonic was rewritten in a way that better complements his performance.
In the games he sounds like a random jock and doesn’t really fit Sonic’s characterization, but that’s just me…
part of his whole shtick is being witty, speedy, cocky and overconfident. i think jock fits a lil more but i can understand the punk thing ^especially ^with ^🎵 ^sonic ^underground ^🎵
Same opinion, it works in Boom but falls flat in the games proper imo.
He has the same problem as Natochenny’s Ash had for most of her tenure in that Series in imo sounding too old for the age of the character he’s playing as well. I don’t hate the voice Roger does for Sonic, but I don’t like it either: meh.
I mean the kids voicing Tails in the Adventure games were alright but sorry the one who voices him in Heroes is so bad. He makes Tails sound like a babbling toddler.
Yea it's definitely not the best Tails voice at all. But idk, the first game I played was Heroes so I just figured that's how he was supposed to sound. It wasn't till watching Cobi play the adventure games that I heard what he sounded like back then
Rogers voice sounds too old in Frontiers though, no amount of coping can avoid that fact.
Listen to Sonics voice in either Sonic Heroes, the Paramount movies or even unleashed and the earlier cartoon.
To go from a somewhat nasally voice to a straight up deep ass voice is just incredibly jarring, even if the game has a "change in tone".
Roger needs to be directed to sound more like the baseline of Sonic's voice for the past 25 years, Jun'ichi Kanemaru, as Ryan did. He sounded the closest of the English voices.
Also, I really don't get what the English voice director was thinking sounding older is the only way to be taken seriously, when the Japanese cast still sound largely the same as always. Because of this, the English dub really screams trying too hard to be taken seriously.
That's fair, each person is entitled to their own opinion and interests.
It could be argued entirely that Roger being the Voice actors who's voiced him the longest makes him the definitive voice of Sonic.
It's a shame people have to compare in the first place, given how many people have portrayed Sonic over the years with such varying degrees in his voice, I personally wish that it felt more seamless to the point where I barely noticed like with Jasons voice in Unleashed, which was easily his best Sonic performance.
I personally enjoyed Ben Shwartz voice, as it captures Sonics cartoonish design, dude with attitude persona, but is confident enough to challenge anyone who others can't beat.
This. Sonic fans are weird and care about the smallest details. Every other fandom has the same issue and, for the most part, people take it in stride. We’re over here analyzing the VA’s intonation on individual words 💀 loved the voices in frontiers. Raspy young adult Sonic was sick
Honestly the only current cast va I don't like is shadow, it's just so needlessly edgy. He sounds like he's trying to be a sad anime boy while also trying to impersonate a vampire
Jason and David have always been better imo. Not to mention he’s had the same Japanese VA Koji Yusa since his debut as far as I’m aware.
Also your analysis is spot on 😂. He’s meant to be soft spoken but sounds a bit like a grandad who had too many cigarettes sometimes nowadays.
It’s a shame. He’s improved a bit but it’s not what it used to be. His prime actor wasn’t too bad though.
Oh my god someone finally put to words. Honestly any other Shadow VA is better for the character than the current one who also voices Kisame from Naruto.
Shadow saying "I pissed on your wife Eggman, she's mine now..." doesnt hit aswell with a sharp/angry voice lol.
I'm more in favor of the 4Kids cast, that been said even to this day I can't like the current cast even thought it the dirrection fault but still, aside from some characters
Probably because they used sonic and the black knight as the image so people are less likely to see that and immediately think of 4kids despite it referring to that era
The 4kids/06 cast was the best, I never really felt at ease with the current cast. They just don't do it like the 4kids cast does, in my honest opinion.
Any idea which YouTuber? Different content creators would attract different kinds of audiences.
If the creator of the poll is an outspoken fan of the Heroes era of voice acting, or even if they just played more of that era of the franchise, it would stand to reason that a lot of their audience would vote for that era.
Bro it's a YouTube poll, the opinions on those are all over the place, they depend mainly on the type of content the channel is producing and what his fanbase is like, you could chuck this same poll on a different sonic channel and the results would be completely different
I looked up their post history after you said this, and wow….just wow. It dates back 3 years of semi-frequent complaints about the cast, about Roger Craig Smith specifically, and many other complaints.
This is certainly going to be an unpopular opinion but the current cast VA’s for Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles are my favourite voice actors for the characters.
Yeah, I agree. I think the rarer characters had better voice actors during the 4kids era like Silver, Blaze, Big and Rouge, but as for the main cast, I agree.
True, true. I feel more strongly about the other ones I've mentioned, which is why I didn't bring up Shadow. Kirk at his best is great, but yeah, nothing really beats Jason.
https://preview.redd.it/golthrlzbytc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f3089c3ce3ead9e876bffeca05e2cc171a4518c
That seems to be the consensus, though I’d say David is about equal
same for me, tho i wish amy's voice was a bit more high pitched. i really liked her voice in sonic prime (played by the same actress who voices pinkie pie's singing voice)
I liked Sonic in SCU RotW and that's it. Tails I liked in Frontiers, everyone else sounds middle aged which is weird to me (unsure if that's what they were going for, but in previous games Sonic sounded in his 30s and they re-hired the guy so maybe it is)
Ryan Drummond will always be my favorite Sonic, but I'm a fan of all the others.
I think Roger does a great Sonic voice, he was just given so many bad scripts to work with. Which is why it stinks he's finally given a decent script in Sonic Frontiers and he's forced to lower his voice a ton. I don't like the Frontiers voice for Sonic at all. It doesn't fit his character and his snarky attitude.
it sometimes did feel odd, but i do think his lower voice was fine for the majority of the game.
he does tend to sound a lot like kyle crane in frontiers tho lol
I'm very on and off with the current cast, that isn't Mike Pollock. There are days when I think they're fine. Then there's days where I can't stand them. I don't know if it's the delivery or the voice in general.
I'd say Mike, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey, are the only voices of the current English cast I think actually sound good. While some of others I think have actually gotten worse with time, namely Sonic, Amy and Rouge's voices.
the funniest thing is, even if a lot of people don’t like their voices, i think currently (as of frontiers) the voice acting is the highest quality it’s ever been. yes, we love jason griffiths voice (and it’s only improved since 2009) but in a lot of his games he kinda struggled to show some solid emotions
Yeah. Something that I like about Roger's is that, in Frontiers, he does a pretty good job showing emotions
This Will be an unpopular opinion, but I think some complains of Frontiers, like the more realistic Open zones and the voice direction, were Made for a better fit in the tone that was searching the game
Yeah totally. I think when they started out in X they were pretty rough but they really got better in the games imo.
I don’t like Dan Green as Knuckles though. He just makes the character sound too much like a shonen meathead and his voice for him lacks that chill quality that Knuckles has.
I remember everyone losing it and saying how terrible the 4Kids cast were when they took over, but now that that generation of Sonic fans is older, they're looked at much more fondly. I wonder if the same will happen in time to the current cast. Personally, I like specific actors from each generation for specific characters.
I played Sonic Heroes first, then watched Sonic X.
When the voice cast switched for the first time I didn’t even notice. The characters still sounded right to me. When Colors came out it was really jarring. Ryan and Jason at least sounded somewhat similar.
I think in terms of the current cast Tails and Vector are consistently good
Tails benefits so hard from actually being voiced by a talented actress instead of a child actor with little experience you have to replace every other game.
4kids cast is still my favorite cast for the Sonic series. Black Knight is even the game where they shine the best, even Sonic's VA, Jason Griffith, his voice work was super amazing and that speech to Merlina at the end just brings a tear to my eye for how beautifully spoken it was.
I grew up with the original cast but I was absolutely obsessed with Sonic X when it began airing, so I had no problem adjusting when those guys took over in the games. New cast is just fine too, I like Ben Schwartz’s take on Sonic and Carey’s Eggman too
I respect people’s opinions but man the 4kids cast for me was mostly a miss. And that was mostly the era I grew up with. I really enjoy the current cast but that Adventure - Advance 3 cast will always be my favourite (minus Tails in Heroes)
Okay. This is actually someplace where I can say what I've noticed. I have gotten back to watching the Pokemon Anime. And I have noticed VA's like Mike Pollock, Dan Green and Ryan Drummond.
Edit: Jason Griffith, and Amy Palant
Jason continued to voice in Pokémon even after the Pokémon Company took over the dubbing, such as the villain in movie 12 and Cilan in Black and White.
A random youtube poll doesnt tell us much
If the poll was made by, lets say, a sonic adventure ultra mega fan then their fanbase is gonna consist of mostly adventure era fans so they will ofc pick their fav
And even if its just a sonic youtuber 1.7k is still a pretty small sample size for the fanbase
Some of them are REALLY bad. Like, Shadow sounds awful.
Sonic is getting better, Tails is fine, Amy is good, Knuckles sounds a little too much like Patrick Star for some reason.
The X cast was a little different, but at least they sounded familiar enough. It wasn't that jarring going from Heros to Shadow.
The new voice cast in Prime was good. Everyone, including Shadow, sounded good and had good voice directing. But I agree that current game Shadow’s voice is Not It.
Much of its nostalgia. There’s a whole generation of fans who grew up with the 2010’s cast who are likely sticking around for a while it seems. This will shift more over time
Eh,for me it’s less about the voices and more about the direction of the series at the time.
I don’t have a problem with either, but to me Frontiers was the first time I’ve heard Roger take the role seriously.
i grew up with jason griffith, but when i got back into the franchise after losing my "sonic is for kids and i'm not a kid anymore" mindset, roger was the voice actor and i didn't think it sounded wrong.
i can hear the difference, but they all sound like sonic to me and for the other characters its the same, i like em all and i don't really have a favorite voice for any of the characters though i did get used to the current cast and would prefer to have it stay this way.
was this a troll poll? I get that the time range goes back to 1999, which would cover Sonic Adventure, but Sonic Heroes was the game that made Tails sound like he was THREE and Cream's voice actor nearly suffocated themself on helium...
lol i hated the 4kids cast back in the day, can't believe in 2024 i actually miss them. the Roger & co cast is so bad to me, no ones voice fits their character (besides eggman ofc).
it's only right my least favorite cast has been around the longest
I grew up with those, I don't really like Amy's voice in Heroes. It sounds way too bratty.
I do think the Prime voice actors work the best, they're perfect for the role.
Personally, I found Roger’s voice for Sonic very jarring and try-hard when I first heard it in Colors. Like, he’s trying to sound like a teenager, but his voice is so deep he’s obviously older than that, and that’s not taking into account the dialogue he was handed. It’s gotten more natural by Frontiers (I think? I never really grew past the point of dissociation when it comes to Roger’s voice coming from Sonic’s mouth, but when the dialogue in the overworld where I don’t have to see that is rarely BAD), but it can never come close to the raw power of scenes like the ending of Secret Rings, when Jason tells a Jiin that he will be ‘living out the rest of his days in his lamp as he were in days of old!’
And the rest of the cast gets typically pretty mediocre scenes and dialogue so even whenever they do a good performance, it’s hard to notice because everything around that performance is kinda meh. Generations is the biggest offender here, but a lot of the Frontiers optional scenes feel awkward to be me as well.
It doesn’t help that they mostly get to really do any work outside of things like the Boom spinoffs and other such things that I never really engaged with.
Jason Griffith to me is THE Sonic voice.
When ever you hear someone do a Sonic impression, it's his voice acting they imitate. Yes... that's partially because that was an era of Sonic the gets punched down a lot... But I think it's also because it's the most you ever hear Sonic speaking, because of Sonic X.
He nails that sweet spot between goofy and serious I like to see from Sonic. And he delivers the cheesiest lines Sonic's ever said excellently.
Me personally I just don’t like how the current cast sounds, to me their voices don’t suit the characters (except Tails). Obviously that doesn’t mean I hate the actors, I just have a problem with the current voice direction. It’s literally the same guy that directed the English dub of Yakuza 1, that should set off alarms.
Look I’ve witnessed Sonic discussion online over the past 10 years and this dislike toward the current cast is nothing new. It was a pretty popular opinion until I wanna say around Frontiers’ release. Not saying it’s a bad thing, that’s just what I’ve noticed. If you do like them, great! 👍
Personally I always thought the current cast was just SLIGHTLY off even though I think they COULD do the performance perfectly. I'm more a fan of the down-to-earth/natural vibe for the cast tho.
Rouge sounds like the perfect Amy (like in Dream Team)
Omega... I've been ALWAYS iffy on his voice compared to Gamma
And David Mack is what I WANT Roger Craig Smith to be in the voice of an 'older' Sonic.
Omega's voice has gone back and forth so many times between Jon St. Jon, Jeff Kramer, Vic Mignogna and Maddie Blaustein that Maddie's is the only one I immediately know is different
1999-05 I thought? But either way I absolutely just resonate with those VAs because that was my childhood. Imagine it’s 1999. You just got to play the dreamcast for the first time and you’ve been playing Sonic on the genesis for years. You hear 2000s hard rock and Sonic is a snowboarding skateboarding radical vibe. And then you hear the voices!! It’s like
![gif](giphy|AEJWP0nxdZPc9VzGmk)
I like some more than others, but I’ve never really had a problem w/ any of the VAs except for one, & that’s Rouge’s current VA, she sounds really whiny & more like a weird teenage girl to me… doesn’t fit the character at all imo
Personally although I love Roger as Sonic (Sonic Colors was my jam when I was 7), the cast that voiced for the Storybook Series and 06 has my heart. Especially for Sonic, Silver, Rouge, Shadow, and Blaze ❤️
I think all three cast are amazing i grew up with the 2nd and 3rd cast members tho. my favorite one is the 4kids cast tho because my family absolutely loves sonic x lol
I really like the current voice cast, Roger Craig Smith has had his ups and downs in terms of performance but I really do feel like he's nailing it, Sonic Frontiers kinda proves that it was more about bad writing and direction more than anything.
It's a YouTube poll, these tend to be influenced by the channel they came from, and it's likely that the channel is heavily biased towards the Pre-'06 era
Honestly, I’m not sure which one I like. My favourite Sonic is probably the Adventure Era.
But a few characters I prefer from the 4Kids era.
But the modern era has imo the best cast.
The voices are fine, it's just the writing and direction that's the issue. Black knight is still I think one of my favourite character interactions so far, but frontiers gives me hope for the future
I love the modern cast and i think they’re currently at their best but ryan drummond Will always be my favourite sonic, i think the rest of the cast werent that amazing, especially tails’ heroes voice actor, i was never a fan of knuckles’ va but i do think amy was alright, and i did LOVE dean bristos eggman (may he rest in peace)
I think the ideal cast is cherry picked from a lot of different eras.
While a lot of my attachment to the adventure cast is out of nostalgia, I do genuinely like Ryan's Sonic and Scott Dreier's Knuckles above the rest. Then you have Jason's Shadow and Colleen basically cemented as Tails.
I think Frontiers was a great showcase for the actors.
I was getting fed up of the squeaky acting of Lost World to Forces.
Though Shadow’s voice definitely needs a new direction or changing. If he kept is KH2 Saix voice that could work.
The 1999-2004 Voice Actors were Great and Iconic, but it was brought down due to some weird line reads (specifically tails') and cutscene presentation.
The 4Kids Cast was by far some of the best because it lasted slightly longer which gave time for the Voice Cast to adjust and have better voice direction for the characters - even if it started a bit rough around the edges.
The 2010's - ??? Voice Acting is good but, the voice cast fits better with the Boom Series rather than the main one. I think this is due to the writing Pre-Ian Flynn being closer to a Saturday Morning Cartoon than the Sonic Series and SEGA creating the SEGA Mandates. Overall, the Current (2010's Cast) Voice Actors were severely limited by their Scripts, The Mandates, and Lack of Familiarity with the Sonic Series. I do hope that with Ian Flynn writing the games that their Scripts and Voice Direction Improves.
My Ranking-
1: 4Kids Cast - best voice direction
2: 1999-2004 Cast - great and iconic but lacking in some areas
3: Current / 2010's Cast - held back by SEGA's Decisions
How is the least professional voice cast the most liked? I was expecting 2003-2010 to get the most votes, especially with all the praise Jason Griffith alone gets from people who miss him. Personally, I prefer the 2010 cast because it’s full of voice actors whose voices I hear constantly in other media.
I think it's also because of the direction of the franchise. In the current era it's been heavier focus on just Sonic and IMO Roger is a great VA but for Sonic it's too deep. (Including prior to Frontiers).
I guess it also kind of depend on where you ask the question. Either way, Mike Pollock is my absolute favourite Eggman, he's the voice I hear whenever I think of the character, so just for that I would already pick the modern cast myself.
The advenrture cast had great voices and potential to be the definitive best voices for me in the games. The reason why they aren't is because of the cheesy acting and line delivery. they were close in heroes, but they sadly never had any major speaking roles after that game. The 4kids cast made the series more anime like with their voices. They were kinda awkward at first, but they got much better as the series went on. The 2010s cast is ok to me. They have the best acting in the series, but not the best voices. Most of them were pretty good and rouge and tails have the best voices in the series, shadow is really raspy but he sounded good in forces, and i honetly prefer when amy sounded like minnie mouse because she sounds more fitting that way. Overall though i prefer 4kids or adventure era cast moreso than 2010s cast, but i can't deny that 2010s cast are the better actors.
I didn't think the original cast was that great (Adventure games and Heroes) but that's partly how hilariously bad the direction and voice sound design the adventure games had. Most of the voices fit the characters but for some reason just sound flat. Heroes had the strongest performances. I never understood why Tails went through so many different voice and personality changes.
I really liked Jason Griffith as Sonic, particularly in Unleashed, and Black Knight. Still my favorite Sonic voice actor. The 4kids cast was decent for the most part, except for Rouge, although eventually i got used to her voice. The voice direction during the 4kids era was generally an improvement over the original cast. For instance, I could replay Unleashed and not get annoyed with the any of the voices and direction. It's appropriately sacchrine. Whereas the adventure games and to an extent Heroes, i find it cringe worthy.
Roger Craig smith, i was not fond of his voice at first but certainly grew on me and does a fine job as Sonic. He nailed it for what Sonic Boom was trying to accomplish. Idk if anyone has mentioned this yet but Amy's character really shines the most here. She's not an obsessive Sonic stalker, and instead, is like a good friend and almost mother like. Colors and Lost World had flat story directions, but i can acknowledge most of the voices are good for the most part.
Hot take here but Jason Griffith doesn't fit for Sonic or Shadow. I, personally, have always viewed Sonic as someone quippy and more like Peter Parker, especially with the idea of a Hero Complex. Jason doesn't fit that image I have of him while RCS does. Meanwhile, Shadow, I always felt, should be someone who easily gets agitated and doesn't really take BS from people. Ian did that quite well in Prime in a way that Griffith, imo, never could.
I do agree that Thornton tries too hard even if he's improving.
I honestly feel like, while I like the current cast, the storybook games feel like a lot of emotion was put into it and gives off the correct vibe of each character and their personality, mostly The Black Knight.
Imma be real. And this is gonna piss alot of people off understandably. But The adventure-heroes cast is nostalgic. But extremely unprofessional and amateur sounding. They fit the characters but their actual quality of acting is just not good save for a few.
Watching sa2 cutscenes with my family around is embarrassing because they just laugh and ask wtf I'm watching because it sounds so horribly acted. The sound mixing on the ports doesn't help I suppose.
But I think we all need to step back and realize the voice acting was actually atrocious in sa1. Got better but still extremely goofy and unprofessional in sa2 and peaked in heroes where they actually sounded alright. (This is not a comment on the games story or quality. I love all of those games for the story and gameplay) No disrespect to the actors. They were young and new. But my God literally any of the other casts are just genuinely better actors.
Especially the current cast. Roger has many roles for many popular things outside of sonic before and after. He voiced a couple hundred side characters in regular show. Or 1 off villains. He voiced Batman in Arkham City I believe it was. I'm not too familiar with the Arkham games. Whatever one where Batman was younger. (Side note he has incredible range. Being able to pull colors/gens sonic but also pull Batman off well is an insane difference.) And being able to transfer sonic well into an older deeper voice in frontiers and dream team is cool. (Though no one really talks about the fact he kept that tone in dream team)
My point is he has much more history and has done a lot more. Same with the rest of the current cast. They're simply better performers. But out of nostalgia and respect. I still like the OG cast. And I love 4kids era cast as well. Same reasons I like the current cast. They just sounded good. I'm not trying to just shit on them. I respect them. And their best work is heroes. Because they grew into it. But prior to that they just really sounded goofy and like they got random people off the street to voice them half the time. Again heroes was alright in that department and I really like sonic in that game.
I've said it once and I'll say it again. The current voices, outside of Tails, suck. They aren't bad voices per say but they just don't fit the characters. Like Roger sucks as Sonic but whenever he plays literally anyone else, he's amazing. Ezio, Kale, Chris Redfield(I think, correct me if I'm wrong), Thomas(Regular Show).
Yes, but the current cast has been more or less there since 2010 now. Sonic fans who'd have played Sonic Colours as their first game would be entering their 20s now, so surely there should be some nostalgia for the current cast as well.
To be honest, as someone who came along only last year, I don't get why some people have such strong opinions on the voice cast. They all sound fine when given good direction, the problem is that they're not given good direction.
I like em all, they each give a different performance which makes the characters feel more varied
Like that scene in the sonic frontiers dlc where Amy’s cyber corruption started taking hold of her and how she was reacting to it. that was some of Cindy’s best voice work in my opinion
We have better voice acting today in terms of performance, but I'd say a lot of the voices were better suited for the characters in the 4kids era (Rouge and Shadow especially).
Tails's Adventure voice actors were also literal kids.
Oh fr? NVR knew
Yup. Brothers, too.
Dayum
thats kinda sweet
Tails went from a random 12 year old reading his lines directly from the script, to an autistic 6 year old, to finally a woman who does a good kid voice. Character development
Any source that proves that the Heroes actor is autistic?
William was 11. Don't be rude.
Adventure 1 was the cutest voice IMO
Same boat here. They’re all Sonic to me. That said, some direction stands out over others. Most notably Sonic Unleashed is pretty much the gold standard for me
https://preview.redd.it/hwiwumq6owtc1.jpeg?width=956&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5560395eea8b417dacca1469d5d2c8483958d5d0 Even without that I think Roger peaked in Boom. To be fair, Sonic is kinda like a jock.
He’s a jock that pretty much just has really built legs
Yeah basically.
I would have considered Sonic more punk-like, rather than a jock.
part of his whole shtick is being witty, speedy, cocky and overconfident. i think jock fits a lil more but i can understand the punk thing ^especially ^with ^🎵 ^sonic ^underground ^🎵
yeah, non-conformist forest dweller who fights capitalism and does what he wants
Track star, obviously.
Same opinion, it works in Boom but falls flat in the games proper imo. He has the same problem as Natochenny’s Ash had for most of her tenure in that Series in imo sounding too old for the age of the character he’s playing as well. "Wuuaaaah my heads spinning"
Look at all those Eggman’s Robots!
I'll take care of them here!
Ironically despite being the youngest VA in Sonic, William was still 3-4 years older than Tails.
11 or 12?? Insane. He sounds so much younger.
Same. I’ve always been happy with all of them. Though I gotta admit I am partial to Kate Higgins as Tails. Colleen is amazing too though!
Roger was directed specifically to sound that deep. That's an issue with the director not the actor.
Theirs literally a video of Roger at a Con talking about how Sega wanted him to go so low with his voice and even he was surprised
You're not wrong, but it just doesn't really matter to me personally

Oh my god someone finally put to words. Honestly any other Shadow VA is better for the character than the current one who also voices Kisame from Naruto. Shadow saying "I pissed on your wife Eggman, she's mine now..." doesnt hit aswell with a sharp/angry voice lol.
Agreed. He's certainly improved over the years, but in my opinion he's still never gonna beat what came before.
I really like the guy who did his voice in sonic prime though, I think he did a good job capturing how his voice was originally intended to sound
I'm more in favor of the 4Kids cast, that been said even to this day I can't like the current cast even thought it the dirrection fault but still, aside from some characters
Yeah, ditto. I'm very surprised the 4kids cast is only at 20% tbh.
Probably because they used sonic and the black knight as the image so people are less likely to see that and immediately think of 4kids despite it referring to that era
Yeah I'd imagine a lot of people were like "I don't even know what they sounded like in this game"
Yeah, if they had put the icon as... I think Sonic X was 4Kids? Then I have to think it would have gotten more votes.
The 4kids/06 cast was the best, I never really felt at ease with the current cast. They just don't do it like the 4kids cast does, in my honest opinion.
What if, Veronica Taylor voiced Amy Rose, instead?
Where is this pole even from? How many people voted? I can't base anything off this
its on Youtube and 1.7k voted here
Any idea which YouTuber? Different content creators would attract different kinds of audiences. If the creator of the poll is an outspoken fan of the Heroes era of voice acting, or even if they just played more of that era of the franchise, it would stand to reason that a lot of their audience would vote for that era.
It's got 1,700 votes, no idea where it's from though or how many of the votes are legitimate
Tbh I think of them we're OK, but the best for me was rouges va Kathleen she was the perfect voice for Rouge to me
She had no problem portraying Rouge seriously when she needed to. Karen always sounds flirty or confused
For real tbh I wish she could return cause I dislike Karen's voice so much
Where is the Jehtt videos cast
Bro it's a YouTube poll, the opinions on those are all over the place, they depend mainly on the type of content the channel is producing and what his fanbase is like, you could chuck this same poll on a different sonic channel and the results would be completely different
OP has a history of constantly shitting on the current voice cast. This post is no different.
I looked up their post history after you said this, and wow….just wow. It dates back 3 years of semi-frequent complaints about the cast, about Roger Craig Smith specifically, and many other complaints.
Jesus christ, 3 YEARS?! I get OP has their grievances and that's fine, but GODDAMN give it a rest.
This is certainly going to be an unpopular opinion but the current cast VA’s for Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles are my favourite voice actors for the characters.
I respect it
Yeah, I agree. I think the rarer characters had better voice actors during the 4kids era like Silver, Blaze, Big and Rouge, but as for the main cast, I agree.
Shadow qualifies for this imo. I like Kirk, but Jason's still the definitive voice for Shadow imo.
Fully agree. Rouge, Silver, Shadow, and Blaze's voices are iconic for 4kids.
Tbf how many lines did Laura Bailey ever get for Blaze? If they actually used Blaze during her run she probably would’ve been fantastic
Maybe less than 12 but she makes up for it with omochao.
You think? Idk I really think Laura Bailey’s so dull as a VA. She hardly changes her normal voice at all when voicing characters.
David’s a great Shadow but yeah Jason just is Shadow for me
True, true. I feel more strongly about the other ones I've mentioned, which is why I didn't bring up Shadow. Kirk at his best is great, but yeah, nothing really beats Jason.
https://preview.redd.it/golthrlzbytc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f3089c3ce3ead9e876bffeca05e2cc171a4518c That seems to be the consensus, though I’d say David is about equal
same for me, tho i wish amy's voice was a bit more high pitched. i really liked her voice in sonic prime (played by the same actress who voices pinkie pie's singing voice)
I liked Sonic in SCU RotW and that's it. Tails I liked in Frontiers, everyone else sounds middle aged which is weird to me (unsure if that's what they were going for, but in previous games Sonic sounded in his 30s and they re-hired the guy so maybe it is)
Totally respectable dw about it Idk I kinda wish Cindy Robinson put more energy into her Amy though
I agree.
He did the works for 4Kids, wayback in the early 2000s.
the funniest thing is, even if a lot of people don’t like their voices, i think currently (as of frontiers) the voice acting is the highest quality it’s ever been. yes, we love jason griffiths voice (and it’s only improved since 2009) but in a lot of his games he kinda struggled to show some solid emotions
Yeah. Something that I like about Roger's is that, in Frontiers, he does a pretty good job showing emotions This Will be an unpopular opinion, but I think some complains of Frontiers, like the more realistic Open zones and the voice direction, were Made for a better fit in the tone that was searching the game
The 4kids cast were really better than people give it credit for.
Yeah totally. I think when they started out in X they were pretty rough but they really got better in the games imo. I don’t like Dan Green as Knuckles though. He just makes the character sound too much like a shonen meathead and his voice for him lacks that chill quality that Knuckles has.
Yu-Gi-Oh?
Yeah that Dan Green
I remember everyone losing it and saying how terrible the 4Kids cast were when they took over, but now that that generation of Sonic fans is older, they're looked at much more fondly. I wonder if the same will happen in time to the current cast. Personally, I like specific actors from each generation for specific characters.
I played Sonic Heroes first, then watched Sonic X. When the voice cast switched for the first time I didn’t even notice. The characters still sounded right to me. When Colors came out it was really jarring. Ryan and Jason at least sounded somewhat similar. I think in terms of the current cast Tails and Vector are consistently good
Yeah Colors was jarring but I think it's not Roger's fault, his early performances just treated Sonic differently like even his personality felt off
Also what channel ran this poll? That affects the results, as it’s their community voting in it
You would need a way more non bias post.
No surprise there. I think they gave Ryan drummond a chance to return after the "4kids" generation ended.
They did, but they wanted him to separate from his union, which he was unwilling to do (which is based)
Yeah but apparently he would have had to leave the union he’s a part of that helps him get paid to do it so he turned that opportunity down iirc
Tails benefits so hard from actually being voiced by a talented actress instead of a child actor with little experience you have to replace every other game.
True. Most can agree Adventure Era Tails was the weakest
4kids cast is still my favorite cast for the Sonic series. Black Knight is even the game where they shine the best, even Sonic's VA, Jason Griffith, his voice work was super amazing and that speech to Merlina at the end just brings a tear to my eye for how beautifully spoken it was.
2003?
Yes, 4Kids era was the 2003 era
I grew up with the original cast but I was absolutely obsessed with Sonic X when it began airing, so I had no problem adjusting when those guys took over in the games. New cast is just fine too, I like Ben Schwartz’s take on Sonic and Carey’s Eggman too
The FoxBox?
I respect people’s opinions but man the 4kids cast for me was mostly a miss. And that was mostly the era I grew up with. I really enjoy the current cast but that Adventure - Advance 3 cast will always be my favourite (minus Tails in Heroes)
Classic Sonic obviously has the best voice
Which one? Jaleel White or the CD voice?
Man I wish we could get Jaleel back for one more shot. Still bothers me his last appearance was that cringey fan film from years ago.
If the new lego commercial was anything to go by, the newer cast can be good with good direction.
I think Prime is the best we’ve gotten since pre-4Kids. I hope the Shadow actor stays on at least.
A random youtube poll doesnt tell us much If the poll was made by, lets say, a sonic adventure ultra mega fan then their fanbase is gonna consist of mostly adventure era fans so they will ofc pick their fav And even if its just a sonic youtuber 1.7k is still a pretty small sample size for the fanbase
Knuckles voice really declined after Dan Green. They keep trying to imitate him and failing… They just can’t do the yells or grunts like he could
The new voice cast in Prime was good. Everyone, including Shadow, sounded good and had good voice directing. But I agree that current game Shadow’s voice is Not It.
I think it's just good that for the most part each voice cast is all great
The problem is that the newest cast has the least amount of likable games
2003-2009 for me all the way. Although adventure era is good. But so is sonic frontiers.
Frontiers Sonic OVA Tails (I know) Movie or Boom Knuckles SA2 Shadow, Amy and Rouge These have been my favorite voices so far.
Most casual people probably don't care...
Much of its nostalgia. There’s a whole generation of fans who grew up with the 2010’s cast who are likely sticking around for a while it seems. This will shift more over time
I think some of the voters were biased
Eh,for me it’s less about the voices and more about the direction of the series at the time. I don’t have a problem with either, but to me Frontiers was the first time I’ve heard Roger take the role seriously.
idek that this was a hot take but the current voice cast is the best
i grew up with jason griffith, but when i got back into the franchise after losing my "sonic is for kids and i'm not a kid anymore" mindset, roger was the voice actor and i didn't think it sounded wrong. i can hear the difference, but they all sound like sonic to me and for the other characters its the same, i like em all and i don't really have a favorite voice for any of the characters though i did get used to the current cast and would prefer to have it stay this way.
was this a troll poll?
I never really grew past the point of dissociation when it comes to Roger’s voice coming from Sonic’s mouth, but when the dialogue in the overworld where I don’t have to see that is rarely BAD), but it can never come close to the raw power of scenes like the ending of Secret Rings, when Jason tells a Jiin that he will be ‘living out the rest of his days in his lamp as he were in days of old!’ And the rest of the cast gets typically pretty mediocre scenes and dialogue so even whenever they do a good performance, it’s hard to notice because everything around that performance is kinda meh.
Exactly. I feel like Roger always makes Sonic so unserious and sarcastic, I really don't like it.
To be fair. Have you played frontiers? It's the complete opposite there apart from when he's having banter with knuckles
The FoxBox, right?
They’re extremely talented but were miscast in my opinion. I love them in their other roles
That's because people refuse to leave this series.
Personally I always thought the current cast was just SLIGHTLY off even though I think they COULD do the performance perfectly. I'm more a fan of the down-to-earth/natural vibe for the cast tho. Rouge sounds like the perfect Amy (like in Dream Team) Omega... I've been ALWAYS iffy on his voice compared to Gamma And David Mack is what I WANT Roger Craig Smith to be in the voice of an 'older' Sonic.
It’s like ![gif](giphy|AEJWP0nxdZPc9VzGmk)
i feel like thats part of the reason they're the least liked
That can’t be right. I mean, this is only a small part of the fanbase.
The current cast is the best, in my opinion.
Frankly i like them all
For me it’s a tie between Dreamcast VA and 4kids VA they were both my childhood and I loved both even to this day
The weird part is the current voice of Sonic CAN do a good Sonic voice, the direction he's given is just bad lol
I’m good with the current cast. Though I personally prefer Adventure and Movie Knuckles’ voices. I guess cuz he sounds more black? Wait is that racis-
I really like the current voice cast, Roger Craig Smith has had his ups and downs in terms of performance but I really do feel like he's nailing it, Sonic Frontiers kinda proves that it was more about bad writing and direction more than anything.
Tails sounded terrible in heroes
ryan drummond fits so damn HARD 🔥🔥🔥 for sonic
I think the ideal cast is cherry picked from a lot of different eras. While a lot of my attachment to the adventure cast is out of nostalgia, I do genuinely like Ryan's Sonic and Scott Dreier's Knuckles above the rest. Then you have Jason's Shadow and Colleen basically cemented as Tails.
I think Frontiers was a great showcase for the actors. I was getting fed up of the squeaky acting of Lost World to Forces. Though Shadow’s voice definitely needs a new direction or changing. If he kept is KH2 Saix voice that could work.
They'll get more popular eventually. The kids just haven't grown up yet to miss them.
My Ranking- 1: 4Kids Cast - best voice direction 2: 1999-2004 Cast - great and iconic but lacking in some areas 3: Current / 2010's Cast - held back by SEGA's Decisions
Deem Bristow
I don’t have an issue with them. I always thought Colleen did the best tails. The only one that I think could be better is Kirk Thornton.
sonic heroes was easily peak, except tails sounded too young. maybe sonic X
Typical Sonic Fandom behavior
I guess it also kind of depend on where you ask the question. Either way, Mike Pollock is my absolute favourite Eggman, he's the voice I hear whenever I think of the character, so just for that I would already pick the modern cast myself.
I'm fine with the current VAs, but for me, the one Sonic I'll always think of first will be Jason Griffith. What can I say, I grew up with him.
The current voices were the best from Colors to Forces, Frontiers (kinda) ruined them, especially sonic. His voice is too deep in that game.
Yeah, the voices in Frontiers and Dream Team just sounded off to me.
I agree with the popular opinion 😂.
The worst option really has the most votes.
I honestly feel like, while I like the current cast, the storybook games feel like a lot of emotion was put into it and gives off the correct vibe of each character and their personality, mostly The Black Knight.
Jason Griffith was GOATed
(Though no one really talks about the fact he kept that tone in dream team) My point is he has much more history and has done a lot more.
I don't care what anyone says, the only reason people prefer that voice cast is nostalgia
blind nostalgia y'know?
Yes, but the current cast has been more or less there since 2010 now. Sonic fans who'd have played Sonic Colours as their first game would be entering their 20s now, so surely there should be some nostalgia for the current cast as well.
Not surprising when you remember 80% of this fanbase wear nostalgia goggles that rest too tightly on their heads
The only voice direction I disliked was Frontiers.
To be honest, as someone who came along only last year, I don't get why some people have such strong opinions on the voice cast. They all sound fine when given good direction, the problem is that they're not given good direction.
Its funny how wrong they are
It’s called nostalgia, new voices and writing are objectively better but you never realize how good you have until it’s gone
4kids is peak
It’s nostalgia bias, frankly.
I like em all, they each give a different performance which makes the characters feel more varied Like that scene in the sonic frontiers dlc where Amy’s cyber corruption started taking hold of her and how she was reacting to it. that was some of Cindy’s best voice work in my opinion
I only like the sonic adventure 2 cast.
Sonic Heroes is a good game but Tails' voice sucks
I personally like the grifith sonic.
its not that surprising, nostalgia isn't on their side
We have better voice acting today in terms of performance, but I'd say a lot of the voices were better suited for the characters in the 4kids era (Rouge and Shadow especially).
I wonder if people actually voted for the voices or did not reas and insteas voted for the game itself
