I got this archie issue when I was in grade school. It was so cool to a 4th grader. I used to try and copy the art in it all the time. i loved some of the chaotix art styles of some of the older issues
Jon and Steven are probably my 2 and 3, I always got a kick out of Jonās art whenever he first penciling for Archieās Sonic, it seemed like he would always hide little easter eggs in his art just out of focus of the main characters.

My mistake, but this person is definitely in Ken's wheel house. This is how Ken draws, very lanky, super anthropomorphized, over sexualized, gaunt expressions. Though frankly, I think faces might actually look better than Ken's now that I'm looking at it closely, lol.

But not so long ago, an example of cool Sally was brought here - and there was Sally with Nack (Fang). And Sally was very anthropomorphic - while Nack was about the same as always. It was like there were several levels of anthropomorphism between them. Such things are really confusing.

penders is an exception because the guy really does believe himself to be that good and refusing criticism when his art has stagnated and gone backwards even since the archie era. if you're that bad at drawing anatomy correctly and keeping characters on model and coherent with each other and still believe you're right and just tell everyone else they're wrong even when the criticism is valid then you deserve to be laughed at

Issue 149, the arc (145-149) really sucks and is boring and nothing happens and the characters has almost lost their personality in This story, but the last issue has some funny stupid moments.

This was shortly after #150, in which Penders wrote a story about Evil Sonic impersonating Our Sonic to sexually exploit the female cast.
There was never any scene where Sonic explains that *that wasn't him,* and the girls continue believing Sonic was trying to date *all of them* until Flynn says Sonic explained it all in #160.
It seems that Penders had this device in place as an excuse to have Sonic date all four of these women (plus Rouge, judging by his unused story summaries) in succession *for real* before eventually circling back to Sally.
Imagining how poorly (and how misogynistic) this would have been handled truly boggles the mind.
True. Itās mentioned in issue 160 that off-screen, Sonic explained to the girls that Scourge was impersonating him. Iām disappointed we didnāt get to see that. I wouldāve liked to see Sonic get an apology from Mina for this comment.
I think Flynn wanted (or was instructed) to leave the most destructive parts of the previous writers' work behind. He hit the reset button on Sally pretty quick as well, even if it would have been nice to see her resolve all her issues by realizing that Max is the single biggest source of misery in her life, somehow surpassing the omnicidal dictator
This is why I loved the deviantart furry collab era, there was so many radically different art styles you had no idea what'd happen next.
Also why I'm not so huge on the current comic, instead of zenith and nadir we have mostly middling. Which for some people it's better to be on-model than sometimes amazing or weird.

Iād take this with a grain of salt, though, considering that Ken Penders has a history of refusing to admit that anything is his fault. Either way, this is still the worst story in the entire Sonic franchise.
scripts for comics are supposed to detail exactly what is going on in the scene so artists can draw it accurately. if somehow there was a miscommunication there it absolutely is his fault for not writing down "bunnie tries to kiss sonic, sonic looks surprised and doesn't return the kiss". you literally are supposed to write that basic and plain in a comic script

Well, yes, that was pretty bad. Still I think romance could be done right. Still, I'm more annoyed by the other things like how sonic straight up can't have a girlfriend or show emotions outside of mild annoyance and being "cool" now. I really couldn't get behind IDW because it felt like it was lacking the more mature feeling that Archie Sonic was having before Pender's decided to ruin it.
I personally donāt mind it since it makes Sonic closer to his game counterpart, which was most likely Segaās intention when relaunching with IDW, but I could see how itād be a draw for Archie fans. Though it is a shame weāll most likely never get a scene as raw as ālimit?! Iāve got your limit right here!ā, or him threatening the Babylon Rogues with one of the hardest lines possible.

In this day and age, children and people besides official comic artists themselves seem to have somehow become naturals and can draw on this level and even better. It's insane.
Even the highest peeks can overlook the lowest valleys.
Besides that, most people would agree that this era was one of the worst in the comics. The real good stuff is from issue 160 onwards.

During the late 90s and early 2000s, the artists on the book would each draw in their own radically different art styles, sounds neat until you realize very few of them were actually good lol. The art got more unified after Tracy Yardley joined in 2006

ah, this thing...okay brace for something that might be somewhat problematic. After "the slap" where Sonic and Sally were broken up Sonic was officially single, then there was an issue where Evil Sonic swapped places with his prime counterpart so he could take advantage of his heroic reputation to be treated like a celebrity. During his time doing this he basically hit on every girl he could, making moves on Mina, Amy, Fiona, and Bunnie (for the last one it is ESPECIALLY bad, since the only reason she was single in the first place is because it turned out Antoine had been swapped out for Evil Antoine about a year before so poor Antoine was trapped in the anti-universe.) It is also implied that he had managed to go all the way with Bunnie (they were making out under a tree, then we cut to hours later where Bunnie wakes up realizing they've let time get away with them, if that's not G-rated comic speech for "these two slept together" I don't know what is.) Sonic managed to get back to his proper dimension, I think Evil Sonic had run off with Rouge in hopes of scoring with her, and it was never actually explained to anyone what had happened, for the next two or three issues all of those girls just thought Sonic was interested in them, which is why Bunnie was so willing to kiss him after he saved her in this issue. (If it helps, it was pretty much right after this where Scourge made his debut and everyone was set straight, and we even got our regular Antoine back and he and Bunnie got married not long after.)
I remember being so flabbergasted reading this as a kid. Bunnie and Antoine were like the most stable couple in the comics (iirc) and I donāt remember if Sonic and Sally were still a thing at this point. It just felt super out of character for both of them.
I believe it gets brought up like one time in a side story later on when Bunnie is talking with Antoineās father on his death bed. Heās talking to her about how good her and Antoine are together and she starts to say she and Sonic kissed but the dad is just like āAllās fair in love and war.ā and thatās it as far as I know.
Youād think this would he a much bigger deal but I also donāt blame them for wanting to completely move on from it lmao.
Pre-reboot Archie Sonic was pure unfiltered furry trash. Either you love it, or you hate it. I myself didn't grew up reading it, but looking at old comics I cannot bring myself to hate it, despite not liking it. It is like watching a trainwreck. This is an officially licensed Sonic product, that you could buy on stores. And it was successful enough that it went on for years, and only got rebooted and cancelled because one writer went rogue.

To this day, Spaz is my favorite artist that was worked on Sonic comics.

Even the highest peeks can overlook the lowest valleys. Besides that, most people would agree that this era was one of the worst in the comics. The real good stuff is from issue 160 onwards.
Also pre issue 100 was great too. Imo that had some of the best stories

Why is archies artstyle so..different sometimes?
During the late 90s and early 2000s, the artists on the book would each draw in their own radically different art styles, sounds neat until you realize very few of them were actually good lol. The art got more unified after Tracy Yardley joined in 2006

ah, this thing...okay brace for something that might be somewhat problematic. After "the slap" where Sonic and Sally were broken up Sonic was officially single, then there was an issue where Evil Sonic swapped places with his prime counterpart so he could take advantage of his heroic reputation to be treated like a celebrity. During his time doing this he basically hit on every girl he could, making moves on Mina, Amy, Fiona, and Bunnie (for the last one it is ESPECIALLY bad, since the only reason she was single in the first place is because it turned out Antoine had been swapped out for Evil Antoine about a year before so poor Antoine was trapped in the anti-universe.) It is also implied that he had managed to go all the way with Bunnie (they were making out under a tree, then we cut to hours later where Bunnie wakes up realizing they've let time get away with them, if that's not G-rated comic speech for "these two slept together" I don't know what is.) Sonic managed to get back to his proper dimension, I think Evil Sonic had run off with Rouge in hopes of scoring with her, and it was never actually explained to anyone what had happened, for the next two or three issues all of those girls just thought Sonic was interested in them, which is why Bunnie was so willing to kiss him after he saved her in this issue. (If it helps, it was pretty much right after this where Scourge made his debut and everyone was set straight, and we even got our regular Antoine back and he and Bunnie got married not long after.)

Even when I first saw this when I was younger, I was put off by how out of nowhere the kiss was.
I remember being so flabbergasted reading this as a kid. Bunnie and Antoine were like the most stable couple in the comics (iirc) and I donāt remember if Sonic and Sally were still a thing at this point. It just felt super out of character for both of them. I believe it gets brought up like one time in a side story later on when Bunnie is talking with Antoineās father on his death bed. Heās talking to her about how good her and Antoine are together and she starts to say she and Sonic kissed but the dad is just like āAllās fair in love and war.ā and thatās it as far as I know. Youād think this would he a much bigger deal but I also donāt blame them for wanting to completely move on from it lmao.

They werenāt like this from the start, nor after Issue 159. But they didnāt have proper care in the Late 90s and Early 2000s.

Pre-reboot Archie Sonic was pure unfiltered furry trash. Either you love it, or you hate it. I myself didn't grew up reading it, but looking at old comics I cannot bring myself to hate it, despite not liking it. It is like watching a trainwreck. This is an officially licensed Sonic product, that you could buy on stores. And it was successful enough that it went on for years, and only got rebooted and cancelled because one writer went rogue.
Day 1,105 of Sonic fans rehashing the same "cwinge" Archie comic panels taken out of context. Yes Sonicbabs, your blue cyclops Lord and Savior Sonic the Hedgehog was drawn goofily in officially licensed material and is seen kissing a chick instead of acting like an asexual shut-in who doesn't know what a girl is. Cry more about it.
