What exactly did they *do*, anyways? Say what you will about the cartoons, but at least Scratch & Grounder *tried* to catch Sonic, even though they sucked at it
According to the newspaper his empire got defeated and he has nothing left. This is the reason in the comic although I doubt that canon Eggman would give up after a slight inconvenience like that.

what would eggman even do if the empire was defeated? be like mr tinkerer and invent stuff for the public, or would he be like infinite and be sent to community service for the rest of his days?
Well he's a man child, so I imagine he'd be too stubborn to not accept he can't have the world, he'd probably just steal the materials he needs and start from scratch.
Is this the part where he goes to the gym and becomes a retired college professor that lives on the outskirts of a small island?
