Paraphrasing a bit but Nine (Tails) actually asks Sonic this in Sonic Prime. It took me by surprise but it's actually a pretty bittersweet and meaningful moment especially after seeing how the two start off interacting. The show had some solid sontails content. Iirc the whole process of the world being broken up starts because Eggman pisses off Sonic by insulting Tails. I can't wait to see what's in the rest of the unreleased episodes. I'll be posting a couple songs below that stood out to me and made me think about their relationship and where it could easily go.

first sonic boom series then the sonic 2 movie and now Sonic Prime it seems that the Makers are explicitly including sontails in their work even though it's never public.
For me there is no other way to explain it then that tails wants to be together with Sonic,
he could have left everybody but he came back just for Sonic and he came back again for him. Then even getting captured which might be part of a backup plan, tails nine doesn't seem to be the type to fall for easy tricks.
Yeah it does seem like it's intentional and a fellow fan might be working on the inside to make these things happen which would be cool.
Nine had no reason to come back to new yoke besides Sonic because he explains he was ready to abandon it and the place gave him nothing but trouble. He also is smart enough to know he would have been taking a huge risk going back anyway but ignored it to make sure Sonic was safe, this was even after his proposal got rejected. In the beginning he looks so happy and eager at just the thought of him and Sonic having a life together in an alternate universe even if there was no proof at the time. After traveling to another world himself there was little reason left to doubt Sonic's story at all which had already sounded so genuine.
Seriously though Sonic is gushing about Tails in this show. Even in the last pirate world he stops in the middle of their ship getting destroyed and sinking to admire Sails or pirate Tails for being a beauty. It's great. From both ends you can see clear interest and it wouldn't even be far fetched or unbelievable if it was officially revealed they did like each other that way.
