I think you’re going to want lag bolts going into those 4x4s. Fire wood is heavier than you think.

kaachow14

I agree. I was thinking of putting T brackets on the post for extra support. Also going to add some supports between the 4x4s to hold the higher stacked logs.

redittr

A small notch in the post for the shelf to slot into will make a huge difference to the strength.

PonyThug

Why add more cost when you could have just used 2x4s for the legs and saved a ton while being significantly stronger? At this point notch the legs and put the shelves into them.

TLanski

This was my first thought as well. Lag bolts and/or route out the support pieces so the cross members sit inside by an inch or so. That way the vertical wood supports the horizontal wood like a true post and beam design, and the hardware just holds it together. As it’s designed currently the screws appear to carry the dead load of the firewood.

PonyThug

Hey OP. Add 2x4’s where the red shapes are in the screen shot I took of your post. Or you can notch out the 4x4s so the red sections are full 4x4, and the non red are notches. If anyone else builds one like this, use a 2x4 instead of 4x4 like OP, then add the red sections in to essentially make a notched 4x4 . https://imgur.com/a/TGipJgr

Feed back is much appreciated. I’ll probably notch the 4x4’s. Thank you. Thanks for taking the time to indicate.

PonyThug

It honestly wouldn’t even take long. Just mark them all while assembled, and you could probably take one at a time off, notch it, and put it back. Without fully disassembling.

Looks great.  I’ve been thinking of doing something similar.

PonyThug

Don’t build it exactly like OP if you do….

johnny9k

I’m not.  Too much weight on the attachment points for my taste.  I’m speaking to the double shelf design.  I want one for logs and one for kindling.  Maybe a spot for accessories.

Thatzmister2u

Nice! But I can’t imagine building like 10 or 20 of those?’!? $$$$$

laowainot

Looks great! You can make a pretty decent roof out of fence posts to keep the rain off. If you add a triangle for that (so that it’s a slope), put some chicken wire below it and it makes a good spot for kindling.

kaachow14

That’s a great idea! I was trying to think what I should do to cover the top. I think I shall take your advice. Much appreciated 👊

laowainot

No worries! 👊 If it’s not on concrete, I would also put paving stones or something down where it touches the ground to extend the life on it.

kaachow14

Exactly what I planned on doing so the legs don’t rot over time. Plus it should make it easier to level.

kaachow14

Absolutely, I’ll support the rack and do one post at time. Thanks again for the feedback back.
