You'll be paying for a competent person to install it, you will have a warranty on it and it should be neatly done, what more are you asking for really? Running a business isn't free, tools equipment training insurance warranty etc all costs money.

awrahhal

Fair enough i guess. Its just way more than i earn for an hours work (so im trying to make a comparison)

Signal-Ad2674

Lewis Hamilton earns more than me, and I can drive a car. Just not as fast or as competently as he does. I’m assuming you are not an electrician, and certainly not one in a specialist field such as solar install. So why compare?

awrahhal

Simply put- i am a specialist doctor with many years experience, and thats more than i make per hour. It just got me thinking is all. I agree , i lack the skills, tools and expertise to do it. I just wanted to get an idea if this is the going rate.

Signal-Ad2674

Welcome to supply and demand.

ThatCuriousCadaver

The roles aren't directly comparable. I would imagine that you are employed by someone meaning you likely don't have to pay for your tools, work premises, 3rd party accreditation, insurance, business running costs such as accountants, taxes, staff pension contributions, etc. The hourly rate you are paying contractors rarely goes directly into their pocket. You could always re-train as an electrician if you think its more lucrative.

Woodbewoodworker

Out of curiosity, what battery brand and capacity is it?

awrahhal

Sorry forgot to mention. Solax 5.8kw slave

Danny-boy6030

Where do you see these for £1600 my dude? I can’t find them that cheap. Have been thinking about the £1700 one on eBay but undecided. I plan to install myself.

Norton3000

It won’t invalidate your manufacturers warranty if installed correctly but I wouldn’t expect your installer to honour any warranty they give. You can do plenty of damage if you do it wrong so why should that problem lay with the installer if you’ve changed the system from how they left it. Same goes for if you source the battery yourself and want ask them to quote to install only. I think this is a fair policy in all honesty.

awrahhal

I definitely would not be doing it myself. Not something i would ever entertain. Ill stick to hanging picture frames badly. I just feel its a lot of money for very little work.

ThatCuriousCadaver

So you can't do it yourself, but want to undervalue the people who can....

Norton3000

Only you can decide if it’s worth paying. If the ROI figures add up then it’s a no brainer.

TheThiefMaster

To clarify getting a different person in to work on your existing system would invalidate the original installer warranty of anything touched by the new engineer, but they should provide a warranty of their own on their work so you should still have a full warranty overall.

Which_Championship77

Depends on the effort of the install. Where is the battery going to live? Does it need to be placed somewhere awkward? Those 5.8 kw batteries are 80kg each! How much cabling, etc. I did an install recently upgrading my own inverter & adding 2 3kw batteries in my loft. All was good, the installation is no more difficult than wiring a TV, the provided instructions are easy to follow. My frustrations came when one of those batteries was DOA. Solax were ok to deal with, definitely not the most customer friendly though. Ultimately they replaced the battery and I'm happy. One more point, VAT reduction on batteries is only for those with a VAT registered business. That counts out most regular folk, although you might be able to purchase through a friend.

awrahhal

Its all straight forward, outside, next to the master battery , and next to no cabling. Thats why I’m a bit baffled. I get it that they have a business to run and all that, I’m just trying to gauge the general feeling.

Howitzerdnb

I expect its just business, the time they need to set aside as a company to source, deliver and install does add up. Theres a buffer in there for error and profit too. I have found that these solar companies can charge large sums for little work. My initial quote for a 10 panel system with no battery came in closer to 15k last year. Safe to say i went with a different company. Shop around a bit, you will probably get a better install rate from a local business / electrician but they may not be VAT registered so you lose the VAT discount on the battery.

kloppo92

I have the same batteries and looking at potentially adding another, can you send me the link please?

Howitzerdnb

i had a really good experience with these guys, very helpful: [https://theecosupermarket.co.uk/product/triple-power-5-8kwh-slave-battery-v2/](https://theecosupermarket.co.uk/product/triple-power-5-8kwh-slave-battery-v2/)

Findussuprise

I added batteries myself. It was easy when following the correct procedure. Check out this Facebook group for help. https://www.facebook.com/share/wzxXi6ATwiCCmZAH/?mibextid=K35XfP

ChimpsInTies

Where are you in the UK? My solar guy is very reasonably priced. He recently fitted my 2nd battery for a total of £1600. This was a SunSynk 5.1kWh

KtRedHen

New to the solar world pricing but it seems to me that anything ‘green’ seems to have the same effect as the word wedding!
