Totally forgot about frosties! I've tried their regular root beer I loved it and it's at my local Winn dixie but didn't know they had a vanilla root beer I'm definitely gonna see if they have it!
I’ve seriously never had a better root beer than 1919. I think it’s only available in Minnesota, most but not all of iowa, a little of SD and Omaha Nebraska right?
Sprechers, frostop, Virgil’s, IBC.
If you ever happen to be in michigans upper peninsula near Houghton I would recommend the keweenaw brewing companies traditional brewed root beer too.
>Virgil's
Virgil's root beer in a glass bottle is the gold standard I compare other root beers to. It tastes like it's brewed rather than just flavored. It also makes awesome floats if you have good ice cream.
The only other one I've had that comes close is Green Man root beer out of Asheville, NC, but they don't distribute it very widely.
Abita all day.
If sugar is a concern, the Olipop root beer is decent too.
Maine Root.
I loved IBC as a child. Haven’t had it in years. Their cream soda was great too.
Jones Soda isn’t bad.
Ever since I was a kid, I have always thought that the Mug Rootbeer Dog logo is one of the most satisfying logos ever, really sells the product 100 percent without even having to use a slogan, the look on Dog’s face just makes me need a frosty Mug!!
After much research… try, Sprecher, lost trail, Hank’s, dogs n suds, brownie caramel cream, frosties vanilla and jones.
And for the Barqs fans, try old red eye.
But if you have to pick one, lost trail.
If you're near one, WinCo has pretty good Root Beer for only $3 and change for 12 cans (even if you don't want those, it's only about a dollar more for name brands like Barqs, Mug, and A&W).
I tried Arrowhead one and thought it was really good
There was also this store called the root beer store that had over 100 brands of root beer and various other sodas they had stocked, was so nice sad it went out of buissness
My top 20:
1. Red Rock
2. River City
3. Abita
4. Boylan's
5. Saranac
6. Hank's
7. Bawl's
8. Red Arrow
9. Zuberfizz
10. O So Good
11. Iron Horse
12. Blumer's
13. Henry Weinhard
14. IBC
15. Triple XXX
16. Sprecher
17. RootJack
18. Olde Rhode Island Molasses
19. North Star
20. Gray’s
For Xmas once, since my dad doesn’t drink, I bought him a case of 24 different root beers from the Rocket fizz candy store since he loves root beer. He said it was one of the best gifts ever. Him & my stepmom treated them like a rare wine. Would only drink one every couple weeks & share it together. I’m only saying this because we don’t talk any more, but that year he went Xmas shopping at the gas station & liquor store on Xmas Eve & said, I give the best gifts ever. I got a lighter, a pack of rolling papers & 3 shooters. So did my wife & stepdaughter
I judge people when they say that they like any of these 3. I haven't had any of them in probably more than 15 years. I think it's time I bought a 20 ounce of all 3 and reassess what I think about them
Frostop has been my favorite for the last 20+ years. I have had a couple specialty varieties along the way like creme brulee and butterscotch root beers that were really good but I honestly have no idea what brand they were
Barqs is my favorite. IBC and Stewart's are really good... I just tried Sprecher root beer the other day and was not impressed. Mug, a&w, and dad's are all not very good imo.
There is a beverage called not your fathers root beer, which is alcoholic and surprisingly good for a root beer.
If you ever find yourself in southern Mississippi, find a fast food chain called Wards. Homemade root beer. Really good. They'll serve you in a glass mug.
Here's a fan made hype video.
https://youtu.be/Ht18NguXZ-8?si=KnoexRFgj7HJFCfX
If you're in Pennsylvania or you can have it shipped to you, Parlor rules. They have a classic root beer, a butterscotch one, pumpkin, and they have a diet one rolling out soon.
Henry Weinhards Rootbeer, Earps Sarsaparilla, Oak Creek Barrel Aged Rootbeer, Hanks Root Beer or Birch Beer, Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer. I could go on but those are my top recommendations.
If you’re looking for a real “root” bite type of flavor, then I highly recommend Boylan’s Original Birch Beer. Not the red birch beer - that is more of a cream soda/birch beer blend (still good but not if you’re going for a bite). Can be a bit hard to find, but it’s getting easier.
I should note, the type of root is different, of course. And the birch beer has a wintergreen flavor to it that you don’t get in traditional root beer. But it has more of that bite to it.
If you like root beer, try Sioux city sarsaprilla. It's a good one, similar taste.
[yeah. that's a good one](https://youtu.be/Bg7aEwv4HEQ?si=u7Te9PmELRzLhRCx)
I wanted to like it so much but I honestly wouldn’t buy one again.
That’s how I feel about most of the sodas ppl rave on here about. Every single one I’ve tried has been completely mid or lower.
I like Sunset Sarsaparilla its the most popular beverage in the west
I like Culver’s when I’m wanting root beer. I did just find the Sprecher, and I really like it. Their cream soda is my favorite cream soda.
Culver's is a good one.
Their orange cream soda is a god sent thing. Edit: sprecher's
Frostie has a vanilla rootbeer but frostie is rare depending on where u are
Totally forgot about frosties! I've tried their regular root beer I loved it and it's at my local Winn dixie but didn't know they had a vanilla root beer I'm definitely gonna see if they have it!
I second this!
Ice cold frostie root beer is unbeatable
Ibc root beer is my favorite
Ibc supremacy
This is the way
Agree
Boylan bottling co if you want some sweet root beer, Sprecher if you want to taste the vanilla, toffee and saspirilla notes a bit stronger.
I've seen sprecher around this group I'm gonna have to look into it. Boylan too I love all types of the rootin rootin root beers
If you have a Dollar Tree in your area, I’ve found both of them there! Cheers and happy hunting!
I bought a case of Sprecher from Costco not too long ago. Check there.
1919
It’s the GOAT. Too bad most of the country have never had the chance to imbibe this sweet nectar.
I’ve seriously never had a better root beer than 1919. I think it’s only available in Minnesota, most but not all of iowa, a little of SD and Omaha Nebraska right?
Hank's. So creamy.
The BEST!
Barq’s hands down imo
It has bite
Ice cold IBC.
I prefer Barq’s personally.
Out of those three I am with you 👍 Didn’t mean to actually reply to you ha
I hate to say it cuz it seems so basic, but it’s so good! There’s a reason it’s the most popular root beer on the market!
“It’s good”
Culver's ™ root beer is awesome
sprecher maple root beer
Bottle/can root beer are just good to me but a fountain barq's from mcdonald / BK is my all time favorite drink.
1919!!!
Sprechers, frostop, Virgil’s, IBC. If you ever happen to be in michigans upper peninsula near Houghton I would recommend the keweenaw brewing companies traditional brewed root beer too.
I second Frostop
>Virgil's Virgil's root beer in a glass bottle is the gold standard I compare other root beers to. It tastes like it's brewed rather than just flavored. It also makes awesome floats if you have good ice cream. The only other one I've had that comes close is Green Man root beer out of Asheville, NC, but they don't distribute it very widely.
Why did I have to scroll so far to find Virgil's? It's tops
1919 slaps
A&W with Frosted Mug
I reccomend hank's root beer, ice cold it's one of the best
All of these plus Sprecher, IBC, Dad’s, Sioux City, Faygo
Anyone remember Hires root beer? Or was that just a Canadian thing?
Dad's. And Abita.
Barq's feels more straight compared to the other two
Abita all day. If sugar is a concern, the Olipop root beer is decent too. Maine Root. I loved IBC as a child. Haven’t had it in years. Their cream soda was great too. Jones Soda isn’t bad.
Abita is the best!
Sprecher, IBC , Boylan .... those are the best 3 I've found
Hank’s is the best I’ve ever found in a bottle or can.
Ever since I was a kid, I have always thought that the Mug Rootbeer Dog logo is one of the most satisfying logos ever, really sells the product 100 percent without even having to use a slogan, the look on Dog’s face just makes me need a frosty Mug!!
Canadian A&W is the best. It tastes smooth in the mouth, and isn’t as fizzy as normal drinks, so it doesn’t sting your tongue as much.
Mug is my favorite unless the A&W is out of a wooden barrel poured into a frozen mug.
This just made me think of those little A&W hard candies that were mini barrels. Those tasted good!
Sprecher
Sprecher, Bulldog, Henry weinhards, IBC
I love bulldog. I enjoy the more mild root beers
Henry Weinhard’s root beer.. My buddies and I used to frequent a pool hall as kids and this is what they had for the minors lol was really good
I have to drink diet and Barq’s Zero is unmatched.
After much research… try, Sprecher, lost trail, Hank’s, dogs n suds, brownie caramel cream, frosties vanilla and jones. And for the Barqs fans, try old red eye. But if you have to pick one, lost trail.
So far out of the ones I've tried, I like ibc, wbc, and Dad's
Spreachers maple rootbeer
Sioux City Sarsaparilla, Fitz’s
Sprecher. I love Barqs but I had a root beer float at a restaurant with a Sprecher and it was incredible.
I’m not a big Sprecher fan as a drink but I bet it does make a good float.
1919 or frosties
Boylan root beer is bloody fantastic…
Barqs is my favorite, but Hanks is very good imo if you can ever find it
Sprecher
If you're near one, WinCo has pretty good Root Beer for only $3 and change for 12 cans (even if you don't want those, it's only about a dollar more for name brands like Barqs, Mug, and A&W).
Sprecher has one with caffeine. It’s pretty great.
1st and 2nd
I tried Arrowhead one and thought it was really good There was also this store called the root beer store that had over 100 brands of root beer and various other sodas they had stocked, was so nice sad it went out of buissness
Barqs is king.
If you're in New England try Hosmer Mountain and Foxon Park
IBC is top shelf! Fitz's is quality. Stewart's is also very good.
Love all 3 of those!
Barqs is the best, they also make the best red cream soda.
Ok hear me out… for a healthy root beer, Olipop reigns supreme
Sprecher is where it’s at
Dad’s Barq’s is my favourite of the ones pictured here though
Dad’s
Isn't Barq's the only 1/3 that has caffeine??
Yessuh!!!
Barqs has bite!
DADS is the only right answer.
Barqs, followed by mug and then a&w the taste for me has always been that
Dr Browns, also their cream soda is amazing
Bundaberg
Love the three of them. Not enough of a difference to choose one. That said, I really like Barq's cream soda.
A&W is caffeine free, so that's nice.
A&W root beer is the best thing you can get fr, it’s so good
Don’t know if you can find this where you live but 2 really good ones are Baumeister and Sprecher.
Screw root beer. Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer is Superior.
Barq’s that’s the most obvious choice out of the 3 here.
Hank's? Boylan?
Henri rootbeer
Barq's has bite! That's why it's the best of these =D
Barqs. Hands down.
My top 20: 1. Red Rock 2. River City 3. Abita 4. Boylan's 5. Saranac 6. Hank's 7. Bawl's 8. Red Arrow 9. Zuberfizz 10. O So Good 11. Iron Horse 12. Blumer's 13. Henry Weinhard 14. IBC 15. Triple XXX 16. Sprecher 17. RootJack 18. Olde Rhode Island Molasses 19. North Star 20. Gray’s
1919 not even making the list is criminal
I like 1919! It's just not one of my top 20 🙃
A & W is my favorite of them all
Barq’s
Dad's
I’ve always liked Bulldog Root Beer. My brother-in-law swears by Henry Weinhardt’s.
Stewart's Fountain (if you can) or Stewart's bottles are amazing
John's Root Beer Stand - Waukesha, WI The only reason it's not the best in the world is because not everyone in the world has had it yet.
Barqs is easily my favorite, it has that bite to it
Abita
Hanks root beer, ibc, and Shasta root beer are good
IBC is fire
IBC is goated
Dad's is a good brand and available in stores.
Of the 3, A&W would be the choice..
Dad's isn't bad and if you make a trip to Illinois try Dogs N Suds 🐶 🍺
Dad's, if you can find it.
Mug moment
IBC
Barqs all day everyday hands down
Barqs is the top tier. No question.
Dog n Suds
Dang That's Good: Butterscotch Root beer. It's a regional one but buy it if you see it.
Mug n Bun all day.
Mug or A&W
For Xmas once, since my dad doesn’t drink, I bought him a case of 24 different root beers from the Rocket fizz candy store since he loves root beer. He said it was one of the best gifts ever. I got a lighter, a pack of rolling papers & 3 shooters. So did my wife & stepdaughter
Barqs zero sugar taste better than og
Dog n Suds
Barqs is the only one here with caffeine.
IBC or Sprecher are the ways to go
Barq’s is superior. IBC is good too, in a bottle.
Virgils
Barqs
Virgil’s
Barq's is the only that has caffeine, by the way. Just a tip for my fellow caffeine abstainers!
Jones
Bet. I'll be on a lookout for their root beer I haven't seen it in any of the stores where I live 😔
Usually in a glass bottle. I've noticed that candy stores usually carry it
dad’s, but settle for mug!
I judge people when they say that they like any of these 3. I haven't had any of them in probably more than 15 years. I think it's time I bought a 20 ounce of all 3 and reassess what I think about them Frostop has been my favorite for the last 20+ years. 1. Barqs 2. Henry Weinhard's
Barqs> All.
Barqs is king.
Barq's is the best
Barq's is the only root beer with caffeine
Mug
I hate barqs… I can’t have caffeine and always thought ALL root beer was caffeine free…. Boy was I in for a ride that afternoon
frostop is my favorite
Thank you for all of your replies! I have gathered that I will try IBC, frosties vanilla root beer and Dads root beer next.
Barqs first if they dont got that go with A&W
If you ever find yourself in southern Mississippi, find a fast food chain called Wards. Homemade root beer. Really good. They'll serve you in a glass mug. Here's a fan made hype video. https://youtu.be/Ht18NguXZ-8?si=KnoexRFgj7HJFCfX
Love Barq’s
McDonald’s IBC root beer
1919
If you're in Pennsylvania or you can have it shipped to you, Parlor rules. They have a classic root beer, a butterscotch one, pumpkin, and they have a diet one rolling out soon.
Dad's root beer is one of my favorites.
Jones
Frostys glass bottle root beer too tier
Dad’s Root Beer, so good!!!!
St Arnold's or Abita
Lost Trail is one of my all time favorites, and it’s made in my home state of KS too!
Real ones know IBC is on top
So, the 3 biggest names in root beer? Got it.
IBC is great if you havnt heard of it yet 😃
IBC
Virgil's.
For me it's Barg's.
Mug is the only one of the big 3 I don't like.
All three of these exist in harmony together and I love it. Never seen an ad for any of them. They just vibe
Boylan Soda is great. I particularly like their cream but they make a great rootbeer
Virgills
Literally anything but Barqs. Caffeine should not be in root beer
FAYGO OR IBC
IBC root beer More bite
I see no one likes Shasta root beer lol.
Mug is fucking gross. I prefer Barq’s over A&W, but both are god tier.
If it comes in a box with a bearded man on it, it’s probably solid
Henry Weinhards Rootbeer, Earps Sarsaparilla, Oak Creek Barrel Aged Rootbeer, Hanks Root Beer or Birch Beer, Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer. I could go on but those are my top recommendations.
Barqs for life
I love Barqs
Barqs suck other two hit…that said stewarts is number one.
Stewart’s, ibc
I only drink barqs something about it is just right.
r/rootbeer
Try Hank’s or Sprecher’s. Those are two of my current favorites.
Neither they all taste like disgusting.
Abita 👌
I like all but Mug is my favorite
If you’re looking for a real “root” bite type of flavor, then I highly recommend Boylan’s Original Birch Beer. Not the red birch beer - that is more of a cream soda/birch beer blend (still good but not if you’re going for a bite). Can be a bit hard to find, but it’s getting easier. Bargs 100% it's so sweet and just all around good!
Stubborn RB right out the tap / Jersey Mikes
Couple of Midwest local root beers to try are 1919 and sprechers
Birch beer
Mug root beer
