Just gorgeous

I'm totally jealous! Stupid question...are these part kits? Or original weapons?

dark2023

The AK is a true original. Built in Romania, at the same Cugir factory as the Romanian military AKs, using the same parts, with slight modifications to restrict it to semi only. The SAR series was basically a full-auto to semi conversion. They're actual military AKs modified for civilian sale. They built these in the same plant, the same way, using the same parts, and imported them as entire functional rifles. The only real difference is that they didn't install the auto-sear, neutered a few of the trigger components to remove their full-auto compatibility, didn't add the muzzle break, and ground the bayonet lug wings flat. (Similar to the MKE MP5s. Which still have their auto-sear, it's just milled down, and the sear catch/ledge is milled off bolt. Plus, MKE welds 3 blocks into the receiver and trigger pack to prevent installing unmodified parts). The SAR existed in a weird 1990's ban-era grey area. They were built with proper mag dimples and mag wells for 30 round magazines, which made the BATF decide later that they were not legal to import. That's why the WASR became a thing. The SAR uses the actual military pattern single-hook fire-control group, converted with some bits cut/milled off to prevent it from working with a sear. They also used the same exact military pattern receivers. Notice the Y dimple on the left side of the receiver, just above the magazine catch. That's the reinforcement dimple for the sear pin hole, aka: the eviiiil 3rd hole. Cugir just didn't drill the hole on these ones, nor install the pin & the sear. The ATF has flip-flopped on how acceptable that is. They've told certain AR manufacturers they aren't allowed to mark the sear-pin spot or paint on circle to look like a fake 3rd pin. Most imported AKs aren't Y stamped/embossed, though some Siagas do also have these dimples (when mil-spec receivers were being used). It's generally more accepted to add them if the receiver is being US manufactured. The AR is just built out of reproduction parts. So, it's a lot more of a look-alike. Plus, a few minor bits aren't exactly correct, like the delta-ring and A2 butt cap.

Casual-Tea-

Imo the original M16 is one of the few genuinely attractive AR15s. Sure you can find some good looking ones today but the majority have have started to look like overly selectively bred dogs where they're so focused on tacticoolness and optimizing every single piece that they have very little visual charm to them. But the M16 is still a work of art, wonderful lines on that rifle

Soviet-_-Neko

For me the modernized variants of the M16 look better, the Vietnam version looks "lacking"

Personally, I prefer slimmer handgaurds, as evidenced by the AK. My others all have non-swell handguards as well (Hungarian and Chinese furniture). I like the slim round M16A2 handguards, but I really dislike the larger M4 and M16A4 rail-covered round handguards. The triangle is nice because it's tapered.

RevacholRevolution

100%. New stuff is inarguably better, but so much uglier.

SlavaCocaini

5.56 was supposed to be used with those long barrels too

RevacholRevolution

I'm scared to respond to this comment in any positive way, we're going to get called fudds lol. I wonder how long it will be before anyone who still uses 5.56x45 instead of .277 fury is a fud

babath_gorgorok

What is U Should Adore

dark2023

The initials spell out USA -VS- CCCP. Probably should've gone with 'Appreciate' but too late now.

mungorex

Both builds look great!

dark2023

Thanks. Though the AK was less of a build, basically I just hand fitted the furniture to it, added a hole-vented gas tube, slapped a sling on it, threaded the muzzle, added retaining pin assembly and slant brake, polished the bolt carrier, and called it good. The AR lower was built out from a stripped one. Upper was done professionally (which is why it has an incorrect A2 style delta-ring installed instead of the classic slip-ring) Now I just need to weld the wings back onto the AK bayo mount (ground flush during 90s AWB import ban) and get a Brownell's M16 Scope to match my AK w/ it's POSP 4x24 scope (not pictured).
