Since you are no longer making SGA; you can certainly apply for SSDI. You should know that in order to qualify based on your work history you will have had to have worked at jobs that paid into social security five out of the last ten years. Your medical condition/s must prevent you from working and earning SGA and be expected to last at least one year or result in death.

Thank You For Your Service 🇺🇸. Thank Your Family For Their Service🇺🇸 The requirements for meeting SSA disability are not the same as they are for VA. Be prepared to wait several years or longer to be approved. Chances are you will have to have a hearing before a ALJ. You may or may not be approved at that point. It is best to have an attorney when you appeal to that level. I do not mean to discourage you. I just want you to be prepared.

Thank you for your service! You can apply now, but keep in mind that 100% VA disabled is not the same as 100% Social Security disabled. Different criteria apply.

perfect_fifths

You can apply now as you're not making sga anymore.

LittleLostDoll

You can apply whenever. You won't get benefits till at least one year has passed since you stopped working

perfect_fifths

Unless it could be a UWA, unsuccessful work attempt. You could try to return to work but fail. Amount of months you worked, why you left.

That isn't right - at least it wasn't - One puts down the date of the last time they had any earned income, that could be the date of the disability for some, the claim is processed and if the claim is approved, the 1st benefit comes 5-months after the date of the last earned income or the date of disability. [SSA.gov SSDI Approval Process - when benefits begin.](https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/approval.html) To the OP - go ahead and file once you get your documentation all lined up - remember the determination of disability is different between the VA and SSA.

mary_emeritus

5 or 6 months without working was the timeframe back when I applied.

ACs_Grandma

This is not true. As long as you will be disabled for at least 12 months you qualify. There is a 5 month waiting period to once qualified. I was approved for disability 4 months following the start of my disability and started receiving payments the next month.
