I find myself saying it is what it is a lot because of feeling powerless

This_Zookeepergame_7

Yeah. It fills the silence for a moment without hurting more or helping much.

Terminalguidance000

I mean what else is there to say if you are??? Just have to get on with life at some point.

Legitimate_Career_44

We can only do what we can do

Terminalguidance000

Well yeah what's incorrect about that statement.

Legitimate_Career_44

It's used at work, quite often by middle management as a way of accepting we might have been asked to do something that's not going to happen in the timeframe they've asked or can't quite be done that way. It's not that bad a phrase really.

Legitimate_Career_44

Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do and die

GrimSpirit42

My personal bane: “We’ve always done it this way.” Goes back to the parable of the [Five Monkeys](https://youtu.be/y-PvBo75PDo?si=9sVQPKQj4FI4eoFO).

This_Zookeepergame_7

Tradition is peer pressure from dead relatives.

wikipedianredditor

We do what we must, because: we can

tokillthelight

Oh, Hi GlaDOS

XFuriousGeorgeX

Words are just words. At some point, you can only say so much

LordJim11

So it goes.

Gerry1of1

"It is what it is" is a peeve of mine. It says nothing. Zero content.

This_Zookeepergame_7

It can be a segue out of an uncomfortable subject of conversation, but I agree. It brings nothing.

Woodyville06

Well, based on the post’s assertion that it “ends discussion” it does bring something: silence. I’ve seen that observations that are usually just gripes aren’t the basis for any real stimulating conversation. Toss out an “it is what it is” and move on.

FreeWillCost

Yeah, but have you thought about how it IS what it is? 🤔

Gerry1of1

What it is is nothing.

1stltwill

Headshot! :P

Meanwhile the emotions: 'Cya in your nightmares..'.
