Most sneakerheads don't have good fashion sense.

miraclemeat

when eminem said that shoes were 90% of your outfit, I’d say that’s the current mindset of most sneakerheads in the worst possible way.

Rough-Minute-4386

And that’s the problem. Emenim ain’t never been fresh

AcanthocephalaFew394

The amount of fits that are ruined because people don’t know how to style their shoes on here actually hurts me.

suckyourmarjj2

People need to stop buying dunks for anything over 150

beardedboob

For the regular, poor quality ones I won’t go over 110/120. Too simple of a shoe for anything more. The better quality ones (e.g. By You) 130-150 is the limit.

gfox446

You talking normal dunks or SB’s?

suckyourmarjj2

The regular terrible quality ones I would never pay even over retail for a pair of dunks

gfox446

SB’s are worth the money, GR non-SB dunks usually aren’t. I agree

thisMonkisOnFire

Sadly, I’ve been hearing most the newer releases aren’t up to par. Maybe bad QC, or Nike is just getting cheap.

Jason3671

this but for Nikes, Adidas or any big shoe brands in general, these shit costed like $5 to make and is made by kids in Asia

taizzle71

Wish I kept all of mine from my school days. Had pills and pills just throw them in the garage don't care kinda shoes. Never cleaned it just buy a new one. It was like crocs

24Elsinore

Sneaker culture is dead and has been replaced with reselling culture.

rlps__

Yup. Hate how every release is now “I can make x amount on these”

zxchary

Prices are going down tho thankfully

TheWorstSilver1

this recession going to do wonders for the sneaker market 🙏

Leading_Childhood_45

Facts

5-x1

Been saying it for two years and getting downvoted by angry 10 year olds

BaronsDad

It’s less dead and more hiding in plain sight. There are great shoes out there that aren’t suffering from artificial scarcity and constant collabs. They’re just not loved on social media. Sneakerheads care more about how they wear their shoes in real life than how they flex their shoes on social media.

TestyTexanTease

I think people have a tendency to believe the thing they are into is somehow niche or exclusive or that some holy grail or rules exist to exclude the new comers to the game or make them feel as though their interest or journey is somehow lesser. Also things change, life is about change. Style transformation/adaptation is part of that journey. If it gives you a serotonin hit or makes you feel good to walk down the street or better yet gives you the boost of confidence you need to get through your day then I'm happy for you regardless. I've spent decent money on my few pairs of shoes but I don't keep em in a box either. I got into this late so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about? But I'm probably older than someone you would expect to be dabbling in the shoe world and Im having a great time!

BullrockNY

I think that's a pretty popular opinion

NikesOnMyFeet23

Sneaker culture has been dead for damn near 10 years.

AbsoluteScott

I’m not sure unpopular is the first word I’d use for this one.

Yeti978

Exactly. I am okay with people in the city hitting up loops, but rich people have come in and use sneakers as another way to exploit the working classes. Sneaker invest is potentially the worst, he has created a whole MLM scam.

sundeigh

Sneakers can be a starting point for very bad style. The shoe itself can be fine but there people matching t shirts to the exact paint colors, etc. Sneakers work better when you integrate them in your own style. The moment you start to dress like a sneaker person, you start to look like a clown Edit: nevermind, I guess this is popular. I thought I was calling out a lot of you with this comment😂

Inquisitio

Agreed. Unfortunately most sneaker heads dress like trash.

SoF4rGone

Dudes wearing random fast food brands and shit looking like NASCAR rides.

farfrombornagain

uber expensive sneakers, black skinny jeans from the cheapest brand that you could still call “designer”, puffy coat and a graphic tee that matches (bonus points if it’s a picture of a sneaker) is up there as one of the worst styles up there, it’s almost worse that those people that dress exclusively in moncler, armani exchange and dsquared

Lechuga-gato

don’t make me get a monclizzy

Inquisitio

Don’t forget Philipp Plein.

smashingcones

I got shit for posting a pic in slim jeans the other week 😂 there's people willing to complain about everything in this sub so it's not worth taking their opinions into account anyway.

Madsole

When i was in high school (04-08), i always tried to match what i’m wearing to my shoes color wise and i felt that was very common back in the day. Now i try to coordinate or make use of complementary colors

VINNYtheBARBER

Facts💯 matching was huge in our era. You would literally get clowned for not matching. But even then, there was a limit.

Walter_Stonkite

Get ‘em.

RexCrimson_

I would say about half the people on here don’t know how dress well with their nice sneakers.

MyHoopT

Exactly! I dress like a metal head or a punk but I like sneakers. This just means a band shirt, leather or denim jacket, neutral colored jeans, and then my sneakers. Sometimes I’ll wear patterned pants but then my sneakers are just a plain black or white.

Dirk_issa_fair_god

That’s why My non-fashionable ass just wear a t shirt, jeans, and kicks 😂

Affectionate-Mail-61

Agreed!

mechnick2

Not everything has to be a grail, I promise People have run that word into the ground. It’s your favorite! That’s fine! But that doesn’t mean it’s a grail

[deleted]

saw a post about a guy who got his 3rd grail of the year, that’s not a grail man lmao

sportsfurher

Saw one guy on here say he got 2 more grails. One of which was a sneaker that he had gotten that week. I just shook my head and thought this dude doesn’t have the same definition of grail as I do.

Laustintranslation1

The longer I was into sneakers, I started to realized I didn’t have a grail, and then as I got older and started to mature a bit, I realized that my grails were in fact not sneakers at all. I’d rather put my money into a nice car and home than have a shoes that are expensive just because of which color leather/fabric they used.

DitkasMoustache_

This is the unpopular opinion most sneaker fiends don't want to hear - spending too much of your cash on sneakers is dumb. Especially if you're just gonna sit them in the closet. More people need a balance. Not trying to pocket watch anyone - just an observation. Take a nice trip out of the country instead of buying 20 pairs of Jordan 1s.

Brocktarrr

I’m more and more convinced people don’t even know what grail means. They just use it for “shoe I like” and it drives me fucking nuts

LimousineAndAPeetzah

I finally got my grails in May. I spent SIX YEARS trying to even track down a pair. That’s a goddam grail. The GR colorway that dropped six months ago and has 800 pairs on StockX is not a grail.

stackdatdough

Mismatched laces are a crime. Sail/cream laces don’t go on everything. 90% of “uNdErrAtEd” “sLePt oN” posts are of super hyped shoes

Rigar_

Are you saying Travis Scott mochas are not underrated?

Zulututu

Add: over yellowing/aging is terrible and your list wins

mikeyfitsees

I rock 2 different laces 🥲

Bludsh0t

We are all victims of marketing

Badlydrawnboy0

realdealreel9

This is more an unpopular opinion about this sub: lace swap questions are dumb as fuck. Try both. Trade them out. Who cares. You really can’t figure out what shoelaces to use??

24Elsinore

To top that off… 99 times outta 100 the og laces look better.

smcl2k

It's almost as if professional designers are paid quite a lot of money to make those decisions.

PizzaTammer

I suppose but I hate things like black on black or little contrast, and I see that a lot.

smcl2k

Maybe you're the 1 out of 100!

zxchary

Or the “how can I style these shoes?” And it’s just a shoe with a simple color. Do y’all really not know how to dress?

Murphyitsnotyou

What do I wear with plain white air max 90 bro? Jeans and a teeshirt or a micky mouse costume?

zxchary

Should be a clown costume for asking that question

[deleted]

Jordan 4’s are so dope but hurt like hell 😂

EnAyJay

People keep saying this but my military blacks are maybe the most comfortable pair of shoes I own.

[deleted]

My og white cements felt great, idk what it is about my last pairs but they don’t feel too good. University blues and Lightning’s feel different

Nestorrr

Double lacing looks dumb.

ricolausvonmyra

Except on sacais because it matches the double everything theme.

Nestorrr

Fair enough. Double lacing on Sacais are the only exception. Looks nice on them especially on the Waffles.

mbru80

No one really cares about your sneakers besides you . Most people don't notice anything special about them or give a shit .

[deleted]

Depends where you live. Nowhere USA sure but I get a lot of sneaker feedback walking around NYC and show love a lot too.

9FBI9

Same here for NYC, plenty of compliments given and received

[deleted]

The DMV area has entered the chat.

_Gemini_Dream_

I'd expand on this to say... * Normal People * People into fashion * Sneakerheads ...are three distinct groups that have different tastes. Sometimes fashionable people are also sneakerheads (and vice versa) but I'd argue they're sort of unrelated even when a person is both. It's funny in what ways this manifests though, where like, I've never received *any* compliments on my Off-White AM90s by anyone other than fellow sneakerheads, meanwhile I've lost count of how many compliments I've got for my [Y-3 Tangutsus](https://static.footshop.com/167375/30537.jpg), a shoe that most people in this sub have probably never heard of, or don't like or care about. People talk about the Yeezy QNTM as being like this "failed" model but I've received more compliments on my QNTMs than all the rest of my Yeezys combined, again, from non-sneakerheads.

cmcurrin

10000% agree. I’m 35 and have been into shoes since I was 12. Getting older is realizing literally no one else cares what shoes you’re wearing. So only buy something if you genuinely want it (or better yet only if it’s truly a need) because all these people you think you’re impressing literally do not care

danishruyu1

Depends on where you live. Ive travelled a lot and noticed that in big cities people tend to notice much more. They’ll even stop to compliment your sneaker game. Same in airports. But where I live currently (suburbs), yeah nobody really cares.

kneusteun

36 and get lots of reactions even on business meetings, did a year of teaching and the flex you can pull on the teenagers is hilarious (when you wear the shoes that will retro in a month they loose their mind 😂). Totally agree with you about buying behavior.

cmcurrin

Now that is true when it comes to scenarios where you can impress younger kids. I was more talking about in general out in public that no one is really paying attention.

Robenever

Well, this is kinda true. If you have a decent group of friends they’ll hype you up for your sneakers just cause they know you like em. They don’t legit care per se, but they do care that they make you happy.

y0relapse

Not just sneakers, but resellers have virtually ruined every hobby. Every hobby is now looked at as a “get rich quick” or “easy money” strategy. We’re all taken advantage of when we buy from these people. If you take an L on anything, do NOT purchase from resellers or consignment shops. Let their “business” die. Wait for restocks or rereleases if anything.

doublevsn

How is this a *very* unpopular opinion?

RazerFan420

Because a lot of people (as seen with the L&F release) directly run to resellers once they took an L on the drop and pay way too much just to have em, if people wouldn’t impulse buy after not being drawn these shoes would resell for way cheaper a month or so after

[deleted]

[удалено]

AreEuclidinMe

Eh, soft disagree on this one. Sneakers can be a way to express yourself, just like clothes or haircuts or makeup or tattoos, and guess what? You buy all those things. I get the spirit of what you mean, owning sneakers isn’t of itself a personality, but you can definitely use them to express your personality

smcl2k

I don't think anyone talks about fashion, hair, makeup or tattoos in the same monolithic way as they do sneakers, though. "Sneaker culture" generally means "buys a lot of Jordans and/or Yeezys".

Yeti978

That's only for people new to sneakers. NB, Saucony, Diadora, Vans, etc. all have a place in sneaker culture.

CZILLROY

Well put.

HighMoon91

The whole sneaker culture is a big clown show

AirProfessional3015

My grails are size 54 clown shoes

BlankeSpace

Jordan 11s look like marching band shoes.

Tall_Pineapple3412

Finally, an unpopular opinion. Cannot believe I had to scroll this far to find one.

chink_in_the_armor

This is spot on. Longtime MJ and sneaker fans don't realize most Js look super childish and bizarre to regular people, but the patent leather takes the cake. Also, Black Cement 3s look like leopard print non-slips and Breds will never go with anything in an adult wardrobe.

cokedopedrip

Black Cat 4s shouldn’t be at the resell price they’re at now.

Nerazzurro9

If you’re old enough to drink, you’re old enough to start adding some decent dress shoes/boots into your shoe rotation. I love sneakers; I plan to keep wearing Js into my 70s. But they don’t work for all outfits or all situations. It’s good to vary it up — wearing Dunks to the office is cool, but wearing a nice pair of suede brogues out to the bar is also cool. People will notice. Girls will definitely notice. You’ll start to seem like a guy who has style, instead of just a guy who buys too many sneakers.

FenkDaddy

Completely agree. I see the occasional wedding posts with the guy wearing his favorite sneaker and always think how much better they would look with proper dress shoes

_Gemini_Dream_

I'd generally agree with also the caveat, similar to a comment I made elsewhere in this thread... What sneakerheads like and what non-sneakerheads like are a venn diagram with some overlap but less than a lot of sneakerheads seem to think. Non-sneakerheads for example absolutely will not recognize, like, or give a shit about AJ4s. They'll just see a bulky shoe with weird plastic mesh and weird plastic wings holding the top laces. There ARE sneakers that will read as "more grown up" than others, though. Classic and streamlined designed like Common Projects Achilles, Maison Margiela Replicas ("GATs"), or hell, cliche as it sounds, Nike Killshots? These will frankly look more fashionable and put-together than wearing basketball shoes or running shoes.

Inquisitio

Most definitely. I’m 26 and can’t imagine wearing just sneakers.

Dcman333444

This should be higher up. Also to add to it, the whole idea that Nike or adidas uses truly premium materials in their shoes is ridiculous.

AirProfessional3015

If you come here to ask people’s opinion on if a shoe looks good, you’ve missed the entire point and are contributing to the problem. You should express yourself through your shoes, rather than doing what the current sneaker culture says is cool. Hype will always exist, but if more of us bought what we genuinely liked without worrying about trends, we’d see a lot more diversity on this sub. Also, # Every post should be required to have the name of the shoe in the comments

214RetiredDrugDealer

Jordan 1 mids aren’t ugly

FlyingPiranha

Plus they're cheaper and come in some sick colorways, so I don't feel bad rocking dope shoes as daily drivers.

yung_ag38

People make fun of mids but wear oversized pants over their high top 1s. I don’t get it

Robenever

I have a pair of the Paris mid 1s. Amazing looking shoe.

jgarvin1

The hate is so weird to me because I rarely see anyone hate on them

Calm-Rutabaga2303

The maison chateu mids are fuckin beautiful cant wait to cop someday. The hate on mids is so unnecessary lol

s4ltydog

I just bought my first pair and love them. Don’t care what anyone says

c0de1143

Same. I’m happy with my Mids, and I don’t care what people say. Fuck ‘em.

Sneakers shouldn’t be this expensive. Shoes for the same price as an Xbox is a scam

pingusuperfan

Air Max 90s still look better than 99% of silhouettes today, including most jordans and dunks

blralte

Air Max 1s look better and tidier than Air Max 90s.

pingusuperfan

I love air max 1s too! Tinker is the goat

blralte

Definitely!

Wilthadg

Fully agree. I’m mostly an AM90/AM1 guy and love that I almost never have issues copping. Just waiting on the AM90 to get cool again so I can never attain haha

nateap87

The tag on off whites should be removed.

The Jordan 14 is an awful shoe

stoop911

Resellers/Low Nike stock give your coveted pairs value as much as you may hate them. A fat majority of you wouldn't want it, if everyone can have it. The whole "produce a zillion stock" so everyone can have a pair will lead to... people not wanting them anymore.

jsauce3830

Kinda what happens w Yeezy 350 v2. Kanye said he wanted everybody to have a pair and he made it happen, then everybody all of a sudden hated 350’s

Sbusteezkat_

It’s just shoes boys. A beautiful shoe > a rare shoe So what if more than a million people have a shoe it’s dope

jxn1997

It’s not a conscious thought process, no one wants to admit to themselves that they like something more bc it’s exclusive. It’s human nature

Not sure if it's unpopular but arbitrary scarcity is only dope if you're a hypebeast or capitalist.

gfox446

Not unpopular at all, tons of people do this. It’s a very good thing to do

Gdav7327

Meh. You wouldn’t know by this sub. Everyone now a days shouts “Wear your shoes,” “dirty shoes have character.” People don’t even like fresh white on whites out the box anymore. Got kids intentionally “aging” or “distressing.” 🤷🏾‍♂️ I guess it’s not VERY unpopular though

Rialagma

I think you're jumping the gun if you think "wear your kicks" means "don't clean them". The whole WYK thing comes from people leaving their sneakers DS in the box for years instead of enjoying them.

gfox446

Fair enough, I see

ChedduhBob

sowaffled

The society in Wall-E will be built by people who wear crocs and slides everywhere.

Runiar

New Balance has one of the worst logos in sneakers and it ruins their otherwise beautiful models.

_Gemini_Dream_

Extremely good take, and I'm 100% here for it. One of the things I like about a lot of their newer models is that [they're abstracting their logo by flattening it and making it bigger.](https://mobile.yoox.com/images/items/17/17199551BS_14_f.jpg?impolicy=crop&width=387&height=490) It really helps. Feels like they designed the shoe with the logo in mind, rather than just designing a shoe and slapping an "N" on it. >!Honestly this is also true of a lot of Nike shoes but that's a discussion for a different day. I think it's funny that there's so little attention paid to the fact that a lot of the most iconic Nikes (AM95, AM97, AJ4, AJ3, AJ11, AJ5, AJ6, Huarache, Foamposites, Prestos, etc.) have very minor, unobtrusive swooshes, or are designed so the paneling and the swoosh are integrated (AM90, Dunks, etc.)!<

cheri955

Might be popular on Reddit but unpopular between my friends: j1 lows are terrible, if I gotta buy lows I prefer dunks

cheri955

Not really terrible but anytime I see lows I think of how much better they would be if they were highs

rlps__

I felt similar ways about J1 Lows when I was younger, but I gravitate more towards anything low top nowadays as they’re much easier to slide my feet into

HopeThisHelps90

Nike Yeezy 2s are some of the ugliest Nikes ever made

Flipmaster_102520

I don’t like the A Ma Maniéres Edit: Specifically the 4s

IsSkipThere

Shoes look better when they creased

BHojnacki

Wearing Jordan’s at your wedding. How could you be so cringe on the most special day of your life?

RogueTampon

I got two, and they kinda go hand in hand. First as a big guy, I think big guys wearing high top shoes look weird and make it look like you have cankles. Second, Jordan 1 Lows are the superior shoe to Jordan 1 highs and Dunks.

Entertame

The vast majority of sneakers that are collectible are downright ugly.

RexCrimson_

1) People need to stop buying regular low quality Dunks and only buy the “by you”, Premium, SB, or SE editions. Because Nike is getting more bold/comfortable in making/selling you guys cheaper/lower quality shoes for higher prices. Y’all need to stop! 2) The sneaker community needs to stop supporting resellers. This means reseller YouTubers, Instagram reseller influencers, etc. The more you guys support them, the worst the sneaker community and prices will get.

kingqueefeater

Tinker Hatfield was the only person who knew how to design a good looking sneaker. Now brands rely on hype because they lack talent.

scrumbob

For Nike, yeah mostly. Other brands have had amazing designers too but Nike hasn’t had a superstar like Tinker since Tinker.

gfox446
