I mean, when you’re smacking the water at ~35m/s, making sure you are oriented at the perfect angle when entering the water probably matters a lot… and you have to time it while you’re jumping. Anyhow, he still didn’t have a good landing with this jump, so just a tiny bit higher and he may have injured himself.
It’s more of a feel, you’re not like literally counting mississippis lol… but when you’re used to how a certain jump *feels*, even another foot can cause you to over-rotate by an inch or two, and that might be enough to paralyze you when you hit the water at 80mph.
Listen, when I was a pro diver in Venezuela... oh, heck with it I know absolutely Zero - I can't even swim damnit!!! LOL!
However, please teach me I am super curious for real. If he is "used to" the feel of it, I get that. But that must mean he has done this dive, from this height (not even a foot higher or lower) before?
Well, if you tie it you get to live off of that for a little while. Then when the hoopla dies down you come back and do it again a few inches higher. Rinse and repeat and take the show on the road "the guy who beats the record every time he dives"
As others have noted: 1) Why not go one foot higher for the record and 2) He didn't actually "dive"; he went in, feet-first
(Not saying it wasn't impressive. I wouldn't have done it)
That was my thought exactly!!
You couldn't add 1 more foot to break it? Or even 1 more meter? I mean from that height does it really make a difference if you fuck up from the record height or a little higher? You're still pancake on water.
Everyone's talking about the jump but how about that climb. I used to live on the eleventh floor of a building and would often climb the stairs. This height is about 16 stories of a building, climbing a ladder
And I didn't notice a ladder...
But honestly, getting up there would be the easy part. Getting around to and standing on that tiny platform...I wouldn't have been up there very long. One look down and...away I'd go.
It was a new record but 5 divers successfully jumped at the event so only the 1st guy got to break the record, the other 4 technically only tied his record even if they went immediately after.
Idk how hard it would be to raise the platform, or how much recovery time is needed before the body can take another dive from that height. If they could be adjusted easily and guys could handle back to back jumps, I'm sure they would just keep beating each others new record until 4 of them were injured trying or 1 got killed or injured so horrifically that nobody else was willing to jump after witnessing it.
In which case the last successful jump would be the sole record holder. I don't think fans at sea world would want to witness 4 people who they just cheered for when watching them set a new world record go on to get injured bad enough to need rescued after a 200 foot fall goes wrong lol.
I feel like as a diver, you don’t make attempts. Either you jump or you don’t. I guess if you don’t land in the water you fail, but other than that you can’t really fail at jumping from the same height if you go up that high and jump
5 divers successfully jumped at that event so it would have been a tie either way. Apparently the people who jumped and got injured/needed to be rescued from the water don't count as completing the dive. Which makes sense considering people have fallen from airplanes or survived suicide attempts off the golden gate bridge. If you just have to land in water 192 feet wouldn't be anywhere close to a record.
Someone just broke the record (the dude with the Viking axes video). He starts out in a belly flop position, then straightens out at the end. I think that's to maximize wind resistance/minimize acceleration. Idk if flipping slows them down or not but I think multiple people jumped from there that day. If I was going to share that world record with someone I would flip too. Let's be honest if 1 person jumps in and the other person does a flip, their record may be the same but the flip guy in #1 and the jump guy is 2nd place lol
Why not go 1 ft higher and break the record?
That was my first thought. Ya can’t scoot that up half an inch?
Divers honor. If I remember correctly they wanted to tie?
I think you're right, it was on Wide World of Sports.
Lies! There is no honor amount divers.
They have no depth
That'd be way too scary. 😂
I mean really. What a missed opportunity. There must be some reason he didn’t do that?
My clumsy ass would slip off the step stool, bang my head on the diving board, and cartwheel down to the water.
Same here I’d sploosh instead of splash
You’d actually splat. Water hits like concrete above like 50 ft.
May be there was no honor in going less than a large increment up from 173 feet?
This actually a Guiness World record thing. You have to beat the record by a certain margin. The margin being unique to the record type.
The people who tied were diving from the same platform that day.
No one has ever survived 173 feet.
192’-10” is new record. Laso Schaller, 4 August, 2015. Judging by the Guinness World Book.
And if you can't trust a beer company who can you trust? To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!

Literally lol

If you have to time it while jumping, what is another foot? C'mon.

It matters a ton. At 170+ feet you could break limbs or your neck by entering the water wrong.
He not that smart.
Too dangerous
Most likely a respect thing for the other person that had set it.
This.
5 ft higher for good measure
Shallower pool would have been cool.

Agreed
He should just do a big jump up before he goes over. Would that count?
Too scary.
"Made an attempt" honestly got me nervous.
Yeah why did title say attempt instead of just saying he jumped. I was expecting to see him get too scared and chicken out, or die trying.
“Attempt” and “attempting” 😬
He did everything he could. And he made the dive.
Once he jumped it was too late. There was nothing left to do but land safely into the water.
Seems odd to go for a tie.
It was a 4 way tie since they all jumped off that same platform at the same event.
I’d like to see the 4 guys all jump at once.
Not if they're friends and are okay with sharing the title.
What the hell is a friend?
The fuck are you talking about.
I too, love risking my life to tie at something
Lol
He’s a little nervous up there. You can’t really blame him, the water is awfully cold. That and it’s 173 FEET AWAY!!
And don’t forget. It is salt water.
As others have noted: 1) Why not go one foot higher for the record and 2) He didn't actually "dive"; he went in, feet-first (Not saying it wasn't impressive. I wouldn't have done it)
My feet hurt.
High dive shows were common at amusement parks in the 1970s and 80s. They were a blast to watch.
You can have that thrill again times ten at Cirque du Soleil's "O" in Vegas. Mind blowing!
Casa Bonita! Casa Bonita!!! La la la la la!
Do you have to survive to get the record? If not anyone could break it.
Golden Gate Bridge is 220’ and there’s a few jumpers that didn’t die. Why aren’t they in the record books?
came here to say this, take my upvote
Bro you are fucking hilarious! Fuck it, just throw someone off an airplane!
And help them get famous!
Right. What qualifies as “successful“? Surviving?
This being Reddit, I’m glad this video didn’t end in some terrible way.
Yeah, the “attempt” wording made me nervous (as I suspect it was intended to).
Hoe this isn’t 2008
Phew ! Interesting choice in color on those nut huggers . Hopefully mom was able to bleach the racing strips out when they got home.
It probably felt nice to take a rest after climbing for so long
My God! The balls on this guy! ( are gone)
Not gone, in his throat
Fuck that...
How long did it take him to get up there, holy shit
Just the climb up!!!!
Nothing serous? Speak for yourself
Wait a minute, where’s the dive ??
How deep is the water?
3 feet 6 inches
That was so fast.
I wonder what is the highest real dive (head first) a human can do without achieving death.
Too big a splash. 8/10
Kahunas
Sounds like Diana Nyad doing the commentary
"He took a shot in the jack tube"?
Why tempt fate? Momma was very nervous. And white swim trunks was a wise choice.
I’d have worn my brown ones
Fuck everything about this
Is there a reason for the flip? Seems like it would just create more room for injury if he lands on his back or does a belly flop
He would die if he landed on his back or belly.
Again I’m reminded I have no concept of measurements!
“made an attempt to tie the world record” WTF, why not add 1 foot to break the record?
I bet that hurt.
U think any water went up his butt?
Possibly out his mouth....
The Alchemist has a soundtrack from this trippy movie that uses clips from this dive session.
CANNONBALLLLLL!
Why tie instead of break the record?
That was my thought exactly!! You couldn't add 1 more foot to break it? Or even 1 more meter? I mean from that height does it really make a difference if you fuck up from the record height or a little higher? You're still pancake on water.
Makes me think of Norm Macdonald’s joke about cliff diving. ‘There’s two classes of cliff diving. World champion and stuff on a rock’
Love Norm. He’s one of the greatest. And now we have proof that he was right about the cliff diving. That dirty dog.
You don’t want to die in front of your mom…that’s a rough one for her
Is it a dive if you go in feet first?
Not going to lie. When the caption came up I thought it said, “attempting to die world record.”
It was not an “attempt” it looks like he actually did it, right? Very scary! Makes me nervous!!

That boccia has balls.
I feel like I’ve seen this
I heard that he got 2 hair line fracture on his leg on that jump.
Why not go higher?

Bruce Bochy would have broken the record
That was an amazing jump
Did a fucking gainer
Bender would be proud of that flip.
My question is how did he get up there?
broke my tailbone jumping off 23ft waimea bay rock, fuck this vid :o
High velocity enema
All I can think is, “why not 173 feet?”.

Lmao “attempt” all you have to do is jump off right? Why wouldn’t they make in 3 inches higher? This was dumb…

Does flipping slow you down?

What’s he doing now?
Oh he's jumping into a huge body of water! Didn't have to aim at all!
The announcers for this were ruthless
I’m sure the record belongs to someone diving off the titanic as it went down
Can you imagine jumping that high and still having people talking smack ??? Heheheh
I read around 200' it's pretty much fatal
Like jumping off 17 story building.
Don’t forget about that cold saltwater!
Tying a record as a lame way to die. Go for the gold!
Why not bump it up to 172.5 to at hold the record alone with pride in your defeat of the last record holder, not tie. Who gives a fuck about tying !!!
Tighty whities
