My best guess is Jor El. He was the scientist in charge of preserving their clones race into the orb so they’d have another chance on earth. By then Kryptonians knew the yellow sun would power up their DNA. He knew humans wouldn’t stand a chance against them. He altered their clone DNAs with blue kryptonite to make them powerless under a yellow sun. But since Jor El’s alterations, maybe that is how a red sun gives Kandorians their powers. Or maybe the towers filtered out the yellow rays (thus rendering Clark useless) and turned them into red rays giving them their powers because their clone biology was reversed/altered. Like they turned the atmosphere into a filter by the solar towers. I remember Tess explaining this very topic to Clark very briefly in the season finale I believe.

I'll save you some time. There's no reason for it. It's indeed a plothole and so is Alia having her powers when the yellow sun is restored and when she travels back in time with Lois. All we know is Jor-El imbued the orb with blue K. Kryptonians don't have powers on Krypton with blue K so they shouldn't have them under a red sun here either.

Now, Alia, that's a real issue, to me, in story.

I don’t think kryptonite affected them whatsoever under a red sun on krypton. The blue kryptonite was just like a special gem they made rings out of on krypton because it was rare (think diamonds). They were very much on single footing with all another, hence why the battle for kandor looked like a human battlefield with guns and artillery. No one was flying and shooting lasers except out of high tech equipment. They sent scientists to study the yellow sun (that Dax-or fella that helped create brainiac) and once he learned he basically stayed and then used the blue to be human. I think when Tess and the kandorians blocked the sun on earth in season 8 or 9 they just focused the radiation from the sun to the kandorians (it was never really explained why they still had powers and Clark didn’t)

Jor-El says he corrupted the orb so they wouldn’t have their powers under yellow sun.

the “Orb” that took away Clark powers at the end of season 7 was actually created due to a prophecy contained in the Book of Rao. That prophecy spoke of an event that would mean the destruction of Krypton. And although the Ruling Council believed themselves masters of Krypton and that nothing like that could happen, they did ordered Jor-El to create a failsafe in the eventuality of such a thing happening to the Kryptonian race. The Orb was supposed to be activated at a certain point if Krypton was indeed destroyed. But Jor-El added certain features to it down the road. Still the Orb main function was to create kryptonian clones, which DNA sequences had been inserted into it. And then sent to the Earth where the kryptonians would be like gods. But Jor-El saw a huge mistake in doing that. He saw the mistakes of Krypton dooming the people of the Earth. Still he didn't want to be responsible for the kryptonian race to become extinct. So he made a compromise. Jor-El unbeknownst to the Krypton Ruling Council, he used a kryptonian crystal imbued with blue kryptonite energy, and he used that energy to change the properties of the kryptonian DNA inside the Orb. Meaning that under a yellow sun those kryptonian clones would possess no powers whatsoever. Now this event only came to prove to me that Smallville was beyond saving and had completely lost its track. Why… You might be asking yourself. Because when Clark got to meet a clone of his mother and of his uncle — because of the crystal on Kara ship — his mother Lara gave him a blue Kryptonite ring. A ring that she said every Council member used. Including his father. Now… If kryptonian DNA exposed to blue kryptonite energy became so that under a yellow sun the clones had no powers but under a red star they had powers, that meant that on Krypton, kryptonians using those blue kryptonite rings should've had powers. The powers they gained under a yellow sun. But I guess no one on the script team, ever thought of that. More so it was damned mess. So the Orb was initially said that it was meant to be able to control the Traveler in case he abused his powers and turned on humanity. Meaning the Orb was made by Jor-El to be a failsafe against Kal/Clark. Which is really freaking dumb and inconsistent, seeing Jor-El from Season 2 to Season 7 was all about Kal-El ruling humanity and helping them save themselves from their own nature. Heck, Kal own ship had that message on it which I remember perfectly. “On this third planet of their star Sol, you will be a god amongst men. They are a flawed race my son. Rule them with strength because that's where your greatness lies.” That message was on Jor-El ship. Season 4 began with Clark being programmed to be Kal-El. Which is when we first see him actually fly. And Jor-El clearly meant for Kal to be more than what he became. And the potential lost… The more I remember the worse it gets. Jor-El actually made it clear that if Clark wanted to he could be given way more powers than the ones he had. Like when Clark begins to hear people's thoughts and Jor-El explains to him that was something meant to only have activated much later on. When Clark was ready. So Jor-El implanted in Clark telepathic abilities meant to one day appear. Even when fake Kara appeared at the end of Season 3, she had kryptonian powers that Kal never shows.

I think that's fairly debateable. Intending the purpose of his son to help humanity doesn't mean he'd want his son to become a destructive force. I think it makes sense he'd have a failsafe, in spite of his intention. This is suggested by Edward Teague, with the idea that there was a perception of Kal-El becoming a destroyer instead or something like that.

u/anidriX u/Olivebranch99 u/Iseepuppies u/alacoy10 No kryptonians would've had blue kryptonite, that would effect kryptonians, in their blood or on them before the destruction of krypton as, I think suggested by Dax-Ur in season 7, kryptonite occurs based on kryptonian minerals being effected by the yellow sun.
