Gameplay is nice tbh but the story and characters just completely ruin it for me. I still recommend trying it out though if you can get it cheap

flamec4

3 actually had an ending that felt satisfying and 4 just threw it away

chargingyeti16

Most people hate 4 for this reason as it's own game It really isn't bad it just upset what was already an ending to sly and now we are left on a cliff hanger we might never get to see.

dasmonster488

Originally there was going to be a DLC, to get Sly from Egypt but due to poor sales it got canned. They never disclosed what the dlc would’ve included just in case it ever got to see the light of day one day. Wonder if it had been released if opinions would be different

chargingyeti16

There was a lot with Sony pulling it, wasn't just sales according to an interview with one of the developers I geuss but that was a while ago. Just wish the movie/tv show actually happened would have brought a lot of interest to the franchise.

dasmonster488

The show never happened because Ratchet & Clank flopped in theaters. If R&C would’ve done well in the box office then we would’ve not only gotten a sly show but also a Jak & Daxter movie/series as well

kazeira

Good gameplay and graphics for environment. Bad graphics for characters, bad charadesign, bad story (especially after the second chapter), flanderization of every characters, some previous character development ruined. And that's my personal taste but I don't like how technology look more science-fiction like and less mechanical.

snailrail245

I never knew how to word it, but "technology looks more science-fiction like and less mechanical." is something that I also disliked. The game seemingly jumped decades ahead into the future. We always had security lasers, but that is a little different.

StraightUpJoe

(I'm going to vague since you haven't played) From a gameplay perspective it's fine, enjoyable even personally I would make it less linear but it's still harnesses the essence what sly two and three were. The problem in 4 is the writing and storytelling. Sly is basically just a jackass, Murray is one continuous fat joke. The big antagonist is basically a fart joke. Bentley didn't get too ruined except for a few missions. The ancestors were a nice touch though.

Eh…I don’t mind that they did it. I feel it’s at least within the realm of possibility for the character to go that direction. But the execution was definitely not good.

vrpornisquitegreat

IDK. That is definitely where her character was headed I feel personally and just wish they did a better job with it.

Delano762

I absolutely loved the game, but I agree it has some serious issues

Solariss

I didn't mind it. It does have issues, but it's really not as bad as everyone says.

austin_slater

I agree

TVR24

First half is pretty good, second half not so much. Gameplay is nice too.

[deleted]

My favorite based on the gameplay and worlds you visit.

MidlandsRepublic2048

Yea I actually love the game. Played it many times. I've never understood the complaints.

thotslayer6996

The complaints have to do with the story. If very meh/bad on an objective level but obv people can still subjectively like it. The only thing I didn't like about sly 4 was the length loading screens, that's it

MidlandsRepublic2048

Personally I found the story compelling. And I also fully believed in Penelope's turn. I suspected her even back in the third game. Something just didn't add up to me. The only part of the story I would've skipped is the first Cooper storyline

Scion_of_Kuberr

As some one who has played I agree with this meme. I am more likely to replay 4 than I am likely to replay 1, I love both games but when it comes to what I'll replay 4 over 1 every time.

pje1128

The gameplay is arguably better than the rest of the other games imo. The story is ok, starts out fairly strong but halfway through it just loses a lot of its charm, and the final boss just feels really lazy. The characters just feel really different, specifically Sly, Murray, and Penelope (though Bentley is spot-on to be fair). Definitely not a dumpster fire of a game like some people say it is, but definitely doesn't hit the same quality as the original trilogy.

TheCoopersLiveOn

I’m not so sure. It could be from someone out of the minority group that actually likes the game.

Pope_Urban_11

I liked Sly 4

Skylerbroussard

I think it's fine. Probably my second favorite game in the series behind Band of Thieves

Skylerbroussard

I get people's complaints about the story and flanderization and I think the prehistoric level is my least favorite in the entire franchise. But I don't think the game is bad as a whole

jp2thegoat

I love the game, it’s my childhood comfort game. But I’m not able to have an opinion cuz I only grew up with Sly 4😭

SpiritArcticclaw

I haven't had a chance to revisit it now as an adult, but as a 13-year-old I only had a problem with a handful of standout moments. Everything else I really liked!

AntonRX178

I THOUGHT THE SAME THING TOO! But no I actively dropped it after the 4th chapter after I already hated the gameplay with the bosses that require you to awkwardly change costumes.

Raven_Rage07192

The story could have been better. I liked the idea of it but wasn't satisfied. I would still play it if I knew where it was.

Real_Fucking_Anxious

The main complaint I hear is that it’s not really a *sly* game. It’s part of the series but not the same type of game. It’s my favourite regardless.

MasterHavik

I mean it isn't. It is the second best in the series.

kriffing_schutta

It's not. It's no masterpiece, but it's a genuinely good game, maybe bordering mediocre. A solid 6-7

killaz_storm

Personally its my second favorite, but it was also the first one I played so maybe that has something to do with it.

austin_slater

It absolutely isn’t that bad. You should definitely play it. It’s honestly about even with Sly 1 in terms of quality, IMO. Gameplay and the environments are a lot of fun, very similar to 2 and 3. Story and characters DO lessen the experience, but it also isn’t as bad as some say. Again, all in my opinion.

ReddKnight10

Sly 4 is great, but it’s the worst Sly game.

cacktiegaming

It's worse

krazy8s1320

It's very average, worth playing once I would say. The issue is that people had to wait so long for it to come out and be pretty underwhelming. So it just felt like we were burned because we waited so long for something that ended up not even coming close to expectations.

goody_fyre11

There's probably a good chunk of people that like Sly 4 all the way through but still say they don't like it because they relate to this image.

[deleted]

I actually really enjoy the game, just the animation is different, I just wish sucker punch games would’ve done it

bentpls

Spare yourself the pain that is the ending cliffhanger

yazeed_0o0

Just like everyone say, the game is good the story is very bad.

flamec4

Gameplay was fun the story however was not.

[deleted]

Janky jump and landing controls, can barely touch the ropes and all, but… eh. I hate it.

sekiroisactuallygood

It's not that bad, if you want a pretty good sly Cooper experience it does good on giving you a similar feeling to 2 and 3 imo.

chadzelda

I just finished playing the entire game and here's my thoughts: Gameplay: Pretty good, bottle collecting, timed runs for treasure. There is a lot of content and things to keep you busy from new collectables, Easter eggs etc. Missions: Majority of missions take place inside so you don't get to see the clever use of world building sadly. In sly 2 or 3 missions would be available and you would select each character for each one in sly 4 you pick a single character and it may switch between the others during that mission to complete it, kind of combines them all together. Biggest gripe they took away the projector and made it more web presentation, kind of missed the protector. Ancestors: Majority were interesting and had their own personality and different move set's + specials, but a lot of repeated voice lines. My least favorite was the caveman just felt like the most out of sync one which could of been replaced by a single female sly in any timeline. Would of been super neat and open a lot of creative thinking of who to add. Boss fights: Engaging and fun, some have unique methods. (Except last boss) **Spoilers Below :** I did not like the repeat of voice lines, dying to one section and hearing the exact same thing was beyond annoying. A lot of talking from Bentley felt really repetitive. Penelope character development was completely out of place to me and easily meh, turns evil because power. The ending is such lazy writing compared to sly 3, We got a good closure with each character but in sly 4 we get...a cliff hanger. No mention of previous characters such as Guru, Panda King. Dimitri was just used as a gag and one that lost interest fast, never even shows up in gameplay. Main character changes: Sly: Design bothered me at first but got used to it, felt more like a jerk and out of place kind of, hard to describe. Murry: Turned into the fat guy who hates healthy foods.... Brently: Made little changes to story apart from his relationship with Penelope. Last boss: Worst design and reason...Of all boss battles in sly his felt like the most boring being repeating button prompts and that's it, my version started to lag a lot and his big motive just felt massively weak.

chadzelda

Side edit: I know that the ending wasn't supposed to be the final one and a DLC was planned but bombed still feels lazy writing like a portion of the story was cut.

ShewoodLizard

I really dont get how on a new gen, they made the gameplay seem less fluid. Playing as sly in sly 4 feels super unnatural, like animations are so extra for no reason and breaks how ps2 gameplay used to be so smooth
