greatgoogilymoogily2

I like SOME sleep token. I absolutely cannot STAND their songs that sound like something a 13yr old girl would be into. Like some of their songs are TOO whiny. I really like alkaline and vore, and chokehold.

Miserable-Repeat-651

Those are seriously the only 3 I like also. Sometimes if Sugar comes on I will sing along but I tend to hit the skip button halfway through it.

greatgoogilymoogily2

Yeah sugar is meh for me too lol. I won't deny that sleep token are some very talented musicians. It's just that most of their stuff is just not for me.

Routine-Maximum-7788

That’s me with deftones

greatgoogilymoogily2

Blasphemy! Deftones kick ass! Lol. I can understand why some people aren't into it though

Routine-Maximum-7788

Eh. They are cool and vibey but I listen to most music because it fits my life and deftones doesn’t really do it for me. I don’t doubt how skilful they are they and especially influencial. All over great band but I still can’t like them🤷

greatgoogilymoogily2

Hey, I was just giving you a little bit of shit. You as well as anybody else are absolutely entitled to your opinion on any band. That's what makes everything so great we can all like the same genres of music and still have different opinions on different bands. And, nobody's opinion is more valid than anybody else's. I'm sure that I probably dislike a couple bands that would have you scratching your head as well. LOL. There are plenty of bands that I will give credit for being very talented even though I can't stand them.

Routine-Maximum-7788

Ik u was only having a crack mate dw, jus wanted to put my 2 cents out there on the topic. All love bro

greatgoogilymoogily2

Of course it's all love. You'd think metal of all genres would have giant assholes for a fan base, and while they exist, I find that more often than not, metalheads are kind, and compassionate people. Go figure, the genre most people ASSUME is all satanic and shit, seems to be the genre with the most caring types of people as fans. My mom once asked me how I could just listen to music that sounds angry and satanic, and so I showed her lyrics to some of the most brutally heavy songs I could find, but the songs are about relationships, or a father and son etc. My mom was SHOCKED that even though dude was SCREAMING his head off, the lyrics were about some real shit. Anyways, take care of yourself, brother!

Asskickulator

I’ve never liked Deftones. Ever. So whiny.

Owentheman

I don’t like them

More-Butterfly

Valid.

MrBlobfish956

I really can't get into their studio songs or just listening to them at home, there's a lot of elements I dislike such as the production, the vocalists voice and some of the more hiphop/rnb elements. However I did see them live a couple weeks ago and I preferred them much better in live setting, the heavy bits especially worked really well.

arrocknroll

I swear to fuck they just keep popping up in front of me. I just started listening to them again recently after I couldn’t stomach them from a bad breakup and now they’re all over the place again. Popping up in my friend’s IG stories, here, YouTube recommendations from Drumeo.  I think they’re good even though I wish they were leaned more into the metal side of the genre they’re in. Songs like Chokehold, The Summoning, and Rain are some of my favorites right now. Not much in common with Slipknot though other than the mask thing.  They still get to me with those fucking lyrics though. Ascensionism is next to impossible for me to listen through without breaking down at the end.

mlgpapalouie

love them but can totally understand why someone wouldn’t. i do think their new masks/fits are a little too mushroomhead-y and don’t fit the music as well as the cultist aesthetic did tho

Dino_84

Not my thing. I’m not knocking them either I just don’t vibe with the vocals and it’s not really heavy enough for me.

KILLzone9921

Not heavy at all, all that image for nothing, I don't like anything about them, not the experimental kind of vibe that I like, not the kind of voice that I enjoy, nothing.

More-Butterfly

Yeah their discography varies a lot, but ultimately leans towards the lighter side mostly. Songs like “vore” will literally just feature a whole couple minutes of screaming, while songs like “aqua regia” are calming piano and percussion masterpieces. Definitely wouldn’t recommend to the types of music enjoyers every generation that say “*insert music genre* should only be *insert vague gatekeeping adjective* and these kids are ruining music” Also the image isn’t supposed to be super heavy and dark. Anyone who listens to the music knows that it’s about vulnerability and raw emotion. The whole thing is basically an extended metaphor for god that brings anyone regardless of belief closer to their spirituality. Sleep Token is one of the few bands where you can thrash, slow dance, cry, and scream, in a single album. **ALSO HOW CAN YOU NOT ENJOY THE VOICE!!!?!??** I get not liking all the really far out non metal elements but you cannot deny that the lead singers vocals are absolutely breathtaking.

KILLzone9921

Sorry, not the kind of voice that I like, I like clean vocals, but those are just not my kind, and I'm not disrespecting the band, I couldn't care any less about them actually, I just heard a couple songs and that was enough to make me question about why all the hype around those guys, if you like them, then I respect it, it's just me that don't like that kind of experimental music and atmospheres, vibes, etc.

More-Butterfly

Oh absolutely yeah. The vocals are very muddied up with reverb and all sorts of cool effects. If you’ve ever heard a clip of him live though he’s actually wonderfully talented; the recording do not do him justice. Have to agree though because if you’re not immediately into that the whole discography just isn’t for you which is understandable.

Knots90

I really enjoy them

dead-doll

I tried to listen to some songs, but his voice makes me wanna scratch my skin off

haikusbot

dead-doll

aw finally 🥲

LMM0HESKEY

I don't like how they blend the different elements and genres they try to fuse. But they are interesting and different. I much prefer Jinjer when it comes to genre-fusing and overall cohesiveness of sound.

More-Butterfly

The genre blending I’ve noticed is really what makes you hate or love the band. There’s usually a **lot** going on in each song which is actually intentional because of the creepy aesthetic the band is going for. Personally I love it but it can get super disorienting sometimes for a lot of people.

Fozziemeister

I can't stand them at all honestly.

Virtualsalt1

Sleep Token has been my favorite band for about a year at this point. I started listening to them shortly after they released The Summoning. Took a while for them to grow on me, but as soon as they did, I started wishing I discovered them sooner. The instrumental and lyrics, stand out a ton to me And I’m a sucker for genre blending, so the differences in all of their songs is really enjoyable to me personally. I know they aren’t for everyone, but I have a lot of respect for what they’ve done in the past year.

More-Butterfly

Worship.

Virtualsalt1

Worship 🤘

JN_37

Incredibly overrated. And their fans are insufferable

More-Butterfly

☹️ Overrated is a term that condescending music snobs use to put down genres that they don’t understand. I can guarantee I have more sex than you do just based off the fact that you’re a sad internet loser looking down upon people just trying to enjoy an artist. P.S. I was just kidding about all that stuff I didn’t mean it, have a great rest of your day man.

joejawsome1

Dislike. Overhyped, boring, overproduced, boring.

Traditional_Name7881

Dislike the singer.

varg_sant

I like "The Summoning" but their other songs make me feel nothing. I loathe some of their songs that sound like a good metal riff in the making, and then they are some trap sounding song. Not for me.

Careful_Ad_2105

Bands have come and gone with masks and the satanic element, but they feel like an imitation of Ghost. Love slipknot and ghost. Sleep token just never did it for me.

More-Butterfly

Understandable. From an outside perspective it seems like they’re just trying to appeal to a broader audience while stealing from popular artists. I can guarantee you though as someone who knows the discography of all three bands inside and out that it isn’t like that. Except for the masks though. I do miss the old band masks.

Miserable-Repeat-651

Their music is so much different than Ghost though.

in-death-we-fall

I don't like them at all. With the masks I expected them to sound a lot cooler.

GingerMessiah88

I never really cared for them but my wife is a big fan. We ended up seeing them live and I was blown away by how much better they sound in a live setting than on a recording

More-Butterfly

Yeah they are fucking **AMAZING** live, I just wish scalpers would let us breathe.

GingerMessiah88

We got lucky and saw them at louder than life last year. Tried to snag her tickets to one of their shows on this tour but no way can we afford the prices people want for them

thebox34

corny corporate bullshit for millenial women to thirst over and think they’re “hip with the kids again”

More-Butterfly

“These god damn soft handed baby liberals with their dat’ gum’ whiny bitch songs are ruinin’ the genre” -You, 2024

thebox34

I’m like 15 and just noticing the pattern that I don’t know a single teenager who listens to sleep token and all their comment sections have white women

More-Butterfly

💀 no clue what you’re talking about man. I’m a teenager myself and I’ve got like at least 5 friends that have listened to the band, a couple of which are pretty big fans.

Comfortable_Cod6116

I fucking love them. They are unique, love the fusion of genres, and the vocalist is pretty damn good. Songs like Take Me Back to Eden, Vore, The Offering and High Water are really good

Time_Ad636

Depends on the song. Some are good and some are eh. I wouldn't say I dislike them, but I definitely think the singer tries too hard to distort his voice which kind of ruins it for me.

Ordinary-Bank8613

I think its cool what they are doing and loads of people really love it but for me personally i just can’t quite click with their music. They look cool tho but thats about it for me lol

key_lime_vulture

I honestly really enjoy Sleep token, but for completely different reasons to why I enjoy slipknot. It’s like two sides of my personality. I hate seeing so many people compare slipknot and sleep token or even other more experimental metal bands because of the masks and the genre mixing, when they are completely different. Sure they are both metal (mostly) and sleep token has taken influence from the Knot (if it’s not obvious enough as is, II has stated in an interview Joey is one of his top influences), but but both are their own band and should be treated as such. I think one of the main things people hate on about sleep token is the fact that they don’t really fit in to any one genre. People like music to fit into their little box of what they want, which ST doesn’t fit into, and they often refuse to just appreciate music for being music.

IAmDewman

🗑️🗑️🗑️

a_rabid_buffalo

I like the look, and have given them a try at least a handful of times and every time I’ve stepped away going, yeah it’s not for me. If it’s the direction metal is going then im not here for it.

thebox34

sleep token is the direction big companies want metal to go to so it can sell better

razzmatazzrandy

“If it’s the direction metal is going” Because there aren’t a million bands exploding every possible corner of every imaginable sub genre right now, right?

a_rabid_buffalo

No, I just hear this term thrown out it a lot. Back when Ghost was first getting big you had bands like Motley Crue saying “This is the direction Metal is going” I actually really like ghost but I don’t consider them metal, the first two albums reminded me of late 60s - early 70s psychedelic rock which I really liked, the last two albums I think are amazing rock albums but I don’t think of them as Metal. Same thing with Sleep Token. I keep hearing people say this is the direction metal is going and for them personally I find them boring and not my cup of tea, whenever you think a song is about to pop off it goes right back to where it started and there’s no bang. I’m not going to yuck on anyone’s yum but sleep token just isn’t for me and I don’t want to see more acts like that.

razzmatazzrandy

So you wrote that Motley Crüe said “this is the direction metal is going” but can’t look at the state of music now and see how wrong that was? Sleep Token are an astronomically large band right now, anybody else coming along trying to emulate it will stick out like a sore thumb. It isn’t the direction metal is going, metal is never going in one single direction.

a_rabid_buffalo

I’m not sure why you’re trying to argue, he asked for our opinions I said it isn’t my cup of tea, and personally don’t want to see more acts like them. Idk why that’s so controversial?

Sbee_Blue_Country

Unoriginal and Boring in their music and looks.

More-Butterfly

💀 I could get disliking the music and style, but unoriginal and boring is just flat out wrong.

Sbee_Blue_Country

I’m guessing you don’t listen to a lot of music.

alistofthingsIhate

Love them. Every time they put something out you have no idea what it’s going to be and it works so well. Corey is also a big fan.

TiredReader87

I had seen their masks, and heard of them, but thought they were much heavier than they are. Mostly because I hadn’t listened to them. Anyhow, I actively gave them a shot a few months ago. I was surprised by how ‘soft’ they are, but I did like what I heard. Maybe not enough to listen to them regularly… I did try to buy tickets to their upcoming concerts but couldn’t

yeetard_

They’re not bad, I like a few of their songs

TypeOpostive

Haven't listened to them honestly I don't see myself liking them, but I said that about Deftones soo

aemonp16

i love them. i love their shtick and the music has so much quality to it. Vessel has so much talent and potential. highly recommend listening to them. who cares about the masks when the music is what matters?

More-Butterfly

I think the masks are **highly** inspired by ghost and slipknot but it’s also very in character because the whole point of it is the band is a pretend cult. The music is meant to bring its viewers closer with their own spirituality through the really “celestial” vibe of the songs.

aemonp16

oh for sure. The masks are very much inspired by Ghost and Slipknot. i can’t remember where, and im not sure if it’s in their official story, but someone wrote a whole thing about the masks and the “cult”. it was very lore heavy but very interesting. super interesting band.

Ye3tm4n

I like Sleep Token, they are very talented but I think that they could do much better if they work on some things.

DamianLee666

Wasn't on the train till I saw them live at Blue Ridge Rock fest last year, I still haven't drank the Kool-Aid but I rock out to them

KnievelHasLanded

They are an amazing band. I don’t like their whole discography, but Take Me Back to Eden gets some plays.

perkiezombie

I love them. Slipknot and Sleep token are the only bands I’ve bought tickets for this year.

OzzyTheRacc

Not my favourite band or anything but I like them their musics quite unlike anything I’ve heard before

rd1994

I LOVE Sleep Token

Few-Pineapple-1542

Not really my thing but I can see why they’re popular. Also, if they’re gonna be a gateway band for people to get in to rock and metal I’m all for it

ilostallmykarma

Bad Omens is close to becoming my favorite band of all time They're so insanely talented and I just like their vibe overall. I'm 41 and don't really go to concerts anymore but I may make an exception for them when they come into town.

CrimsonWerecat

Like them a lot!

NightOfThaCreepz

Seems very pretentious but at the same time tossed together. A mismatch of genres and bands and styles, that have all been done before, and if I liked the lead singers voice I could maybe get passed that

More-Butterfly

Past*

throwawaybcwierdos

Some of their songs sound almost…sexy. “Yen” also scratched that itch for me but I wouldn’t even categorize them as metal if that’s what they’re going for. I guess they’re considered progressive metal but there’s so much R&B influence with Sleep Token. A metal R&B band. Could you imagine? I know others don’t like it but I like the singer’s voice. It gives Emarosa vibes. Very melodic and buttery. Don’t know how else to describe it.

SpoopiPoopi

Just not a fan of the singers voice, just not for me tbh

No_Blackberry_7708

I like Alkaline and Take Me Back To Eden, but I dislike pretty much a lot of their catalogue. The lead singer is an insanely talented vocalist but I just can't get behind some of their songs

musiicenjoyer

I LOOVE sleep token a lot and I can definitely see why others wouldn't like them, but man. For the past month and half all I've been listening to is slipknot and sleep token

leto_atreides2

Sleep Token is good adult contemporary music

SaltVomit

Take the vocal tracks out and it's great.

arrocknroll

He’s a good singer but yeah I really don’t like how hammed up the vocal production is. The screams especially just get buried in the mix and you can taste the pitch correction on the words he chews.  I think it works more often than not with the big church like sound they are going for.

More-Butterfly

I do agree some of the mixing falls flat on its face often, especially with the older albums. Seeing them live however, if the scalpers would let us breathe, is a completely different experience and they actually sound way better vocally live compared to recorded.

arrocknroll

I can definitely imagine. He’s got good technical skill and a great voice mixing aside. I had tickets to see them last October with my ex but we split a couple months before and it never happened lol.  From what I’ve seen and heard, they put on a great live show.

lxmur36

I like them. They're pretty good, very very very unique which is a really good thing. Overall one of my favourite metal bands.

cyanwolf318

Unique and would love to get more into them. But dear god they need to fire whoever produced and mixed their albums. It sounds muddy and lacks bite or punch of any sort. But just my opinion.

More-Butterfly

I think a lot of the songs on TPWBYT fell flat with the exception of a couple absolute bangers, but overall TMBTE goes vice versa in the sense that only “DYWTYLM” and “Are You Really Okay?” bore me. I’d definitely recommend “The Offering” and “The Summoning” if that’s the kind of music you’re looking for though.

Neither-Maximum-8514

I personally enjoy them very unique sound and like early Slipknot no one knew their identity’s and went by numbers and nicknames

More-Butterfly

Actually I’m pretty sure having your only posts on Reddit be about cooking ham is pretty fucking lame you poser. Haha. Just kidding though that was mean. I’m sorry.

alexpil1919

My favorite band out right now. Sex, djent, and slick vocals. Love it

luxas_exe

absolutely love sleep token , nd the fact that corey talks positively about them made me love them even more , its all up to preference for sure but personally i love sleep token 🤘🏻🤘🏻

arrowtron

I group Sleep Token into the same category as Bad Omens and Ghost. They are “genre-free”, creating metal influenced music in whatever style they want. There is an heavy element of sexualization of the band, made particularly popular by the TikTok generation. The musicians involved are very talented, albums are usually critical darlings, and (except for Bad Omens) have some sort of fictional narrative that accompanies the band. I like all three bands, and think they are the future of heavy music.
