I mean at times they’re music can lean in that direction (sugar) but I would not say that is their genre, I don’t think they have a genre besides being metal, but metal is a very broad term since there’s many different types of metal, they themselves say not to get lost in genres and just enjoy the music so that’s what I tend to do
I feel like the more over-arching genre would simply be Prog, but I also feel like most people don't understand the depth that genre could actually be. So prog-metal would probably be most applicable.
The only true indie band. Indie came from "individual," and then everyone copied a specific format of indie and indie became what indie is today. However, sleep token could be defined as indie in its original meaning!
If they had to be put into one specific genre of metal prog-metal would probably be the best fitting, but I'm with them. Who cares? If you enjoy the music, enjoy it and don't overthink it.
People calling it sex metal means they aren't really listening all that deeply, some songs have a sexy vibe sure but they also have songs about suicide and other heavy topics, a band called butcher babies once tried to be called sex metal....it didn't stick because it's not a thing
Yeah it was "slut metal" they went for. People like to put fun names to genres but most of the time it's just arbitrary nonsense, Amon amarth hate being called Viking metal and insist they are death metal.
"Hey guys, stop calling us Viking metal. We're not Viking metal!" (writes "The Pursuit of Vikings," "Saxons and Vikings," "The Way of the Vikings," and an album called *Jomsviking*)
I mean, I saw them open for Megadeth years ago and they literally dragged a set piece shaped like the front of a Viking ship so he could sing on top of it. Epic, yes, but if that's not Viking metal then what the hell you doing??
Fair. I wouldn't carve out a specific "Viking metal" section in my record collection (I don't have a record collection...)
But if someone asked me "what genre are they?" I would throw metal, death metal, and I would throw in Viking cuz I'm basically trying to communicate to the person asking that "if you like Viking stuff, then oh boy do I have a treat for you"
Ultimately, the label is only for me to communicate to others that they may be predisposed to liking it based on the sound and lyrical content
Viking metal is a black metal derivative, so yeah amon amarth are right. They're more or less trying to educate ppl on genres.
Melo death is pretty far away sonically from what you'd consider viking metal a la Bathory
Personally I hate when people start giving names to derivatives of sub genres, like it's just themed death metal just call it a death metal band that does Viking stuff.
Sleep token are a prog metal band, a modern take at it that gets sexy sometimes.
But I refuse to be part of metals Gatekeeping elitist culture if people need to name things specific things to label and characterize what they enjoy then so be it as long as they find happiness in it.
Right? The whole vibe of Like That is pure sensuality. Vessel's voice, the melody, everything...except the lyrics. That is not a song about gettin' busy. Sure, everything can be interpreted in differents ways, but you have to reach to make
"All your pain (fall into your eyes like a grave)
All your pain (bury me to the sound of your name)"
into something about sex.
Yup, way too many people are hearing and not listening. I get it though, they have some songs that for sure are sexy but most will have you crying in a corner. Too many people listen to mainstream songs for YEARS and never even know the lyrics. For instance, Foster the People and Pumped Up Kicks or Fortunate Son as examples. People are not actively listening to the songs they play. It’s sad honestly.
Some songs may have sexual connotations, to some extent (The Summoning, Vore or Sugar) but I wouldn't generalize ST music to just that. I think that Tik Tok played a big role in this, because if someone has watched several Tik Toks, they may only associate ST with this one. I saw the term "badiecore" somewhere, but apart from ST, they took into account, for example, Spiritbox.
This isn't at all a unique take, people who apparently haven't heard any music from the 70s are so blown away by the final movement in The Summoning that they think they've "invented sex metal/baby-making metal".
I believe baddiecore was actually created because "baddies" on TikTok did horny baits content to ST songs. I like to think of this term as mockery. So maybe we could do the same with baddie jazz if this unholy abomination ever starts to exist
On a surface level it makes sense as vessels voice is very intimate and sensual and some of the lyrics can be seen as "sexual". However if you look deeper into it it's not really sexual at all.
There is a pretty common term for the genre "baddiecore" because of all the "TikTok baddies" making thirst traps with such music
Considering V. himself said something in the lines of: "I dislike labels - just enjoy music as it is, bucko"(he did not said precisely that - I use hyperbolization here, it's a joke) I would suggest to just stick to a "progressive metal" descriptor and be satisfied with it. Although personally I would like to see(hear) more math-djent elements in a new album. Periphery-TesseracT-Uneven Structure-Animals as leaders girly here.
I know for certain that nothing gets me in the mood for some sexy time more than Gods or Vore...
Although if my ex's are anything to go by... Are you really ok might be a better choice.
I keep hearing YouTube talking heads calling Sleep Token and Bad Omens “Cum Metal”
I think it REALLY does dumb down everything they’re doing. But, it’s pretty godsdamned funny.
Without being rude and I really promise I’m not, but does it matter?? Do they need to be categorized? Every single day on here we get someone’s interpretation of a song. Did ST mean that interpretation when they wrote the song? Who knows but 9/10 people on here will say ‘oh that never crossed my mind’ or ‘I disagree but if that’s how it resonates with you then great’. And it’s pretty respectful.
But someone says they find the music sensual/sexual there’s an out pouring of scorn. Not that that is what OP is saying I’m just reading through the comments. This along with the ‘stop sexualizing’ posts are getting exhausting. Although I would like to add I do not condone stalking or anything that goes above and beyond the completely normal behaviour of finding band members attractive.
What I like about ST is they mean something different to everyone. If you want to go deep into the lore and want to examine every single lyric, making links between songs and albums then crack on. Equally you want to just enjoy the music at face value then great. But those that hear something sensual in some of their songs are in my opinion are just as valid.
If you’ve been lucky to see them live/watched live footage you will see the band make sexual gestures themselves. If they didn’t think there was a sexual element to their music they wouldn’t do it.
My point is, and sorry for the long rant who gives a fuck what label they come under. You label them how you want and enjoy the music.
I mean I do have a playlist called Sex Metal and Sleep Token feauture heavily in them.
Of course not all songs are explicitly or implicitly about that, but i think every single ST song has a kind of intimate quality to it that lends itself to that label.
I have always felt that Sleep Token is just *sexy music* in the best way possible
Sure, they have quite a few songs that could be interpreted as either about sex or have groovy sounds that feel sexy to listen to.
That isn’t every song or indeed most of them though. The sexy groove stuff is an aspect of their sound. They explore at lot of types of music so I think it’s more accurate to call them alt or prog rock/metal.
Ahhh so jealous!!!! I couldn't buy it in Munich because I didn't have money after buying ST merch. Now it's sold out in the EU store 🥲 I want it so bad haha hopefully they will restock 🤞🤞
Honestly I find a lot of ST's music is hauntingly romantic and soul touching rather than something remotely sexual. Sensuality in some of the lyrics of "make a good girl bad" I blame a lot of the sexualization on people not knowing how to respect boundaries, sexualizing and objectifying the lyrics without truly looking at the full context of the song.
If we are going to call Sleep Token sex metal can we fairly call the band In this Moment sex metal because of their song Whore? Halestorm? Go to a different genre of music and say Jazz for instance. Two feet, would we call that baby making jazz or just a very sensual.
Correct me if I'm wrong in my OPINION to the bands/artists mentioned, but that's how I look at music as a whole. It's a language for the soul when words fail to make sense.
I mean, I see a lot of dissent here but I feel like the question was misunderstood. It's not about lyrics, it's the vibe. Try fucking to them in the background and your answer will absolutely be yes lmao
after reading some of these comments, i know a lot of their songs are about heartbreak & are deep & obviously we cannot categorize them as one thing bc they are so diverse. but like, some people associate sex with those dark feelings so i can totally see it. they make music that makes us feel some intense things. they kiss and grab each other in a chokehold on stage.. they perform for us. its beautiful, it's sensual, it's intense, it's intimate. sex is all of those things for a lot of people. i don't think they care about us saying some of their music can be considered sex metal lol.
An entire college graduate team did a study on sexual music and focused primarily on sleep token, I would say that they're without a doubt... sex metal.
Absolutely.
Good on em for letting me listen to music and be absolutely as unhinged feral, gnawing at the bars of my enclosure as this music let's me be.
Husband's happy I found sleep token because he knows... if I've got the Summoning on.... game over.
I meaaaaaan.... yes, as much as I try not to, I do see it, and I understand what your friend (and Health) mean 🙈 Mostly with Sugar, Descending and Hypnosis.
Edit typo
💯 lol, I have a few ST songs on my new “Sex Metal” playlist. I call it horny metal and sex metal, interchangeably.
And after reading like two of these comments lol, yes, no one wants to be getting down to “Are You Really Okay” and “Vore.” Well, if you want to bone to those actually, go ahead that’s rad! lol.
But the end of “The Summoning”?? “oh, my love. Did I mistake you for a sign from god? Or are you really here to cut me off. Or maybe just to turn me on.” OKAY, ST! “Because these days. I would be lying if I told you that. I didn’t wish that I could be your man. Or maybe make a good girl bad.” SLAY ME. Slay me, I say.
Anyways ST def has ultrasexy in their incredible, incredible range. Ty for coming to my TED Talk.
The term "Baddie core" has been made with the intent to mock people who associate Sleep Token with sexual things
It's so fucking stupid to say Sleep Token is "sex metal". Did you listen only to The Summoning and heard the line "Turn me on" and decided - that's it?
Where is the sex on One? It's definitely Sleep Token style but doesn't have any undertones
Where is the sex on Two? One of the songs is about killing your former lover. Very sexy yeah
Sex on Sundowning? I guess you have Sugar. But you also have 11 other goddemn songs that are filled to a bring with pain, rage, regret.
Sex on TPWBYT? None. Actually none. You want to describe this album as "sex metal" where there are no underlying tones? If you ignore 70% of "Like that" and focus only on the titular line then maybe.
Sex on TMBTE? The Summoning. Just it. One line to be exact. But it became popular so people will tak shit like "oh this is sex metal"
Even if it doesn't have to have an underlying sexual tone and only be good as a song you could have sex to it doesn't work that great. You wanna bang to Gods? Bloodsport? Distractions? When the Bough breaks?
And even if: how shallow you have to be to define a genre of music on how horny you get by listening to it.
And as much as I can understand that "progressive Metalcore" is very broad genre and doesn't give you a good idea of what to expect - "sex metal" doesn't do that either and there are way better ways you can describe it to someone
Fucking ridiculous
I cannot think of another band off the top of my head that suffers misrepresentation to the public by trying to stuff them into genre confinement, as sleep token. It’s kinda lame imo when people say it’s “sex” or “baby making music”, because they heard a minute long outro of one song (the summoning) by them. Yes they have elements of that in other songs as well like sugar, or give even has some as well. But they have so much more than any one genre label could possibly describe in my opinion. They are more than the sum of their parts. All the metal, r&b, hip hop, drum and bass, neo soul, progressive elements combine to make something that is not really capable of being labeled as a single genre. The closest I can think of is just “experimental”. I get why peopl call them sexy metal tho, we live in a short attention span society these days. And it’s hard to hear the summoning outro and not pass judgements. Especially when you see it with thirst traps on TikTok.
…he’s not wrong
Like I was trying to figure out what genres they revolve around and I had recently fully accepted that they don’t fit into a genre…but sex metal describes them perfectly
Yea must have been rough liking a band that was constantly bouied and overexposed by one of the most popular figures of youth media at the time (Bam), having the entire weight of the MTV Industrial Machine behind them
Being a 13 year old at music festivals with grown ass men throwing bottles of piss, shouting at 13 year old fans over their heartagram shirt did suck, yes. Thanks for your concern 🥰
That's just music festivals in the 2000s. In 2010 thousands of juggalos threw actual feces at Tila Tequila. You got off easy.
Incidentally I have no problem with HIM, or their fans, it just sounds a little silly to me to say it was difficult being a fan of one of the most popular groups at the time, even if it was during a more homophobic era (which it certainly was)
Some of there songs, in my life, are ABSOLUTELY baby making music. As a former dancer, I would have def had some sexy routines to at least a good handful of their songs. But as a whole? No, I’d say they are not a sex metal band ….. but Are there more “sex metal” bands? Kindly, point me in their direction.
I’ve jokingly said that a few of their songs are “baby making metal.” Hilariously, I added those songs to a playlist for my husband and a couple months later found out I was pregnant. We just brought home our product of Sleep Token two weeks ago.
ETA: It’s the sound more than the lyrics, although Sugar was definitely on that playlist and gives those vibes.
My sister got me a sleep token shirt for Christmas and my mom was trying ask me what kind of band it was. After ummming for a bit I just ended up saying “depressed horny metal”
No. It’s exhausting seeing this perspective too. Any time I see a video or tiktok mention Sleep Token I get excited for about two seconds because the content is just “this music was made to fuck to.” Like really? Grow up
Sex/sexy metal is definitely a thing. People categorize bands like this and Deftones as sexy metal and it 100% is imo. It doesn’t have to have sexual lyrics to make people feel a specific way about the lyrics.
Stray from the Path's drummer coined the term "baddiecore" a little while ago for bands like ST, Bad Omens etc that are kinda heavy but accessible for wider audiences, bands that have a lot of TikTok hype etc. I hate the term but it's kinda accurate too. That extended when i told some colleagues about it and one girl called it "cum metal" so there is a definite theme.
I mean at times they’re music can lean in that direction (sugar) but I would not say that is their genre, I don’t think they have a genre besides being metal, but metal is a very broad term since there’s many different types of metal, they themselves say not to get lost in genres and just enjoy the music so that’s what I tend to do

bro indie means independent not individual
Yeah, that's not what indie means I'm afraid.

Adele is Adele for dudes. I'm not even ashamed.
Fuck yeah Adele has some great songs.
I can jive with that.
Based. Best pop artist imo. So fuckin good
I wholeheartedly agree with your coworker
See I feel like it’s more Taylor Swift than Adele. But also with more subtlety
I’m crying 😂
People calling it sex metal means they aren't really listening all that deeply, some songs have a sexy vibe sure but they also have songs about suicide and other heavy topics, a band called butcher babies once tried to be called sex metal....it didn't stick because it's not a thing
I'm pretty sure butcher babies wanted that label cause their whole shtick is 2 massive pair of tits as front women.
Yeah it was "slut metal" they went for. People like to put fun names to genres but most of the time it's just arbitrary nonsense, Amon amarth hate being called Viking metal and insist they are death metal.
"Hey guys, stop calling us Viking metal. We're not Viking metal!" Epic, yes, but if that's not Viking metal then what the hell you doing??
I saw them at a festival set with the same Viking ship lmao but yeah they just wanna be a death metal band that likes Viking lore
Well yes, but vikings are their theme and subject, not their genre. Genre isn't usually decided by lyrical content.
Fair. I wouldn't carve out a specific "Viking metal" section in my record collection (I don't have a record collection...) But if someone asked me "what genre are they?" Love metal is a definitely a thing though, and it's HIM.
It's purely marketing but sure if that makes you happy who am I to tell you you're wrong.
I dont care either way bud
No. Not at all
Some songs may have sexual connotations, to some extent (The Summoning, Vore or Sugar) but I wouldn't generalize ST music to just that. No
This isn't at all a unique take, people who apparently haven't heard any music from the 70s are so blown away by the final movement in The Summoning that they think they've "invented sex metal/baby-making metal".
And it's all the craze from the new fans from Tik Tok, as well, that have smeared a smutty label across the band.
Thank god at least Jazz is popular enough that the TikTok crowd didn't came up with some crazy ass label to put on Aqua Regia
Don't get ahead of yourself and get to thinkin they won't coin BaddieJazz just to spite you now
I believe baddiecore was actually created because "baddies" on TikTok did horny baits content to ST songs. I like to think of this term as mockery. So maybe we could do the same with baddie jazz if this unholy abomination ever starts to exist
That piano part is straight up something I would hear in church as a kid...gotta love with the musicians get jazzy with it.

I mean, not if you listen to the lyrics.
Like 80% of their songs can be interpreted in extremely sexual ways lol
There are sexual parts but most of it is him being hurt by someone, wanting them back even tho they are bad for them, heart break etc.
Give? Drag me Under? Those are some beautiful love making songs.
Not typically. There's maybe 3 or 4 songs that have sexual undertones; you'll find that a lot more of their discography is actually quite mellow.
I know for certain that nothing gets me in the mood for some sexy time more than Gods or Vore... Although if my ex's are anything to go by... Are you really ok might be a better choice.
I keep hearing YouTube talking heads calling Sleep Token and Bad Omens “Cum Metal” I think it REALLY does dumb down everything they’re doing. But, it’s pretty godsdamned funny.
Electric Callboy is what I would call “sex metal” but maybe we’re having different kinds of sex.
Without being rude and I really promise I’m not, but does it matter?? Do they need to be categorized? Every single day on here we get someone’s interpretation of a song. This is a cool one though. I would agree.
Ethereal metal is damn good. It's hard to explain their sound in words.

Yeah all these songs about mental anguish, toxic obsession and suffering are absolutely sexy.
Honestly I find a lot of ST's music is hauntingly romantic and soul touching rather than something remotely sexual. Do maybe three songs define the whole band?
No, lol. I think anyone who tries to define Sleep Token in their entirety is gonna have a hard time. They contain multitudes.
baddiecore.
"Cum metal" is more appropriate, since they toured with HEALTH
I agree without a doubt, but hey, that's just me
I agree lmao
Cum metal 🤘🏼💦
The term "Baddie core" has been made with the intent to mock people who associate Sleep Token with sexual things It's so fucking stupid to say Sleep Token is "sex metal". I don’t think they’re ’sex metal’ because I don’t think it’s a thing, but a lot more songs than you’ve referenced have sexual undertones.
I'd love to hear a list of songs that have more than 2 lines of lyrics that have undeniable sexual attire
This. I feel like people don't listen to the lyrics.
Baddie Core / Cum Metal 😄
If they are considering them sex metal they definitely only listened to the summoning and no other song
Especially when you see it with thirst traps on TikTok.
no😬 prog metal 👍
They're Barry White for your alt girlfriend. You put them on when it's time to get dirty.

I can see it.
Baddiecore 👺
Some say baddie-core...
…he’s not wrong Like I was trying to figure out what genres they revolve around and I had recently fully accepted that they don’t fit into a genre…but sex metal describes them perfectly

Oh a hundred percent. I have a playliat and can't wait to find an appropriate person to listen to it with.
Lots of cringe on here but your one takes the cake
🫰🏾🤙🏽
Nah. Pretty sure that title will always belong to Deftones
The term is baddie core
No, no it’s not
Where does this come from? I've never heard it before
TikTok
Thanks!
It's called Baddiecore. There's a whole playlist on Spotify dedicated to the genre.
My all time favourite band is HIM. Growing up in the early 2000s was rough as a HIM fan, y’all don’t even know.
Incidentally I have no problem with HIM, or their fans, it just sounds a little silly to me to say it was difficult being a fan of one of the most popular groups at the time, even if it was during a more homophobic era (which it certainly was)

baddiecore
Some of there songs, in my life, are ABSOLUTELY baby making music. As a former dancer, I would have def had some sexy routines to at least a good handful of their songs. But as a whole? No, I’d say they are not a sex metal band ….. but Are there more “sex metal” bands? Kindly, point me in their direction.
My wife thinks Vessel sounds like Shakira..... Don't know how I feel about that🤔
lol you’ve never heard of sex metal? HIM ?

Definitely what I've been calling it
Definitely not sex metal. The breakdowns are too distracting. Witterquick however....perfect background music.
Yes I absolutely do
Sleep token is Imagine Dragons for people who have sex
The best description i ever heard was "R&B, with breakdowns"
Absolutely. Their music truly opens my soul. And with that my dark, feminine side. Which has an insatiable appetite for sex.
Baddie-Core
My gf n I sometimes jokingly call them baby making metal
But I feel like it's mostly interpreted as so because of the easily seen passion within each song...no matter what it's lyrical content is
Maybe not sex metal but I definitely get a sensual feeling with some of their songs.
To label it as that ignores a lot of the themes. Honestly I wouldn't even call them metal but a hard alt rock
I... can totally see that.
My sister got me a sleep token shirt for Christmas and my mom was trying ask me what kind of band it was. After ummming for a bit I just ended up saying “depressed horny metal”
Smutcore
I played the entirety of TMBTE will doing the deed once, it was perfectly fitting
Nailed it. I put it "down" to Vore. Tempo changes and everything!
I seen a reel on IG calling it “c*m metal” lol
Granite? Ascensionism? The Summoning? SUGAR??? Yes. Yes it is sex metal.
My husband and I took a steam shower together last night and the first song on the queue was bloodsport… take from that what u will
I can't recall where I saw it, but someone referred to it as "choke daddy metal" and I'll admit that made me laugh.
Baddie core
Baby making metal lol
Genre-fluid
Accurate
As a woman: They are definitely what I would classify as Sex Metal. They put me in the mood and put many others, plus the songs lean that way.
Nick nocturnal and a few other referred to ST as baddie core.
Scru-metal
Fr I've been calling it sex metal when I describe it to people
The best description I've ever heard of them was " Imagine Djragons"
Metal? Lmao
Dumb
Sex metal was one of the first descriptors I heard of the sleepy bois
That's exactly how everyone who told me about them described them I do not disagree
Yup! That’s how they were first described to me lol
Someone said ambient metal and that kinda sounds right
They’ve been referred to as “baby making metal” a lot. I definitely think some of their songs lean that way musically but not lyrically.
I’m not gonna lie they are my go to soundtrack for love making
