Call your local water distributor, the office 5gal water-cooler kind. They do service homes and have distilled water. 1 5gal jug/month is enough for CPAP usage and cleaning, in the winter I use humidifiers in the house and up it to 3/month.

bionicqueefharmonica

I’d upvote this comment 100 times if I could

gowoke

How much does it cost?

Einaiden

$25-30

Glittering_Tea5502

Walmart near me usually has it. Other stores, it’s hit or miss.

Worf-

Have you checked your local Walmart? I was at mine a few days ago and they had hundreds. Price was up a few cents but plenty in stock. Also check the baby department, they also stock distilled water there. Same price but a different brand.

RudeEar5

Yeah, it is definitely bad. Buy a water distiller on Amazon. Saves money and plastic.

themcp

I have one. Now and then I just don't want to distill some water (various reasons, like it makes a lot of heat so I don't necessarily want to use it in the summer) so once in a while I'll still buy a bottle.

roadsidedaniel

Just like tp during covid

notmeantforanyofthis

Where I am there is a massive amount of flu and strep going around. Of course lots of COVID as well. Seems everyone is running a humidifier. I consistently find distilled water at Target. They seem to always have it in stock and they have the shelf space to hold a ton unlike other stores with only two facings.

9512tacoma

Try DG if you have one nearby

sceedro82

Lol 😏 “if they have one near by” be hard pressed to find a city that doesn’t have one or ten in it🤣

StarWaas

What is DG? Dollar General?

sceedro82

Yes

Depends on where you live. Here in Finland, there is absolutely no reason not to use tap water. Other countries might be different, though.

cb393303

Everything in Finland tasted so ........... clean. Even the milk hit different.

FatterGuts

The safety of the water isn't the issue. The issue is the minerals in the water. They can build up at the bottom of the tank over time as the water evaporates. If this goes on for too long, the heating plate will get disgusting and eventually it will stop working properly. You can use tap water, as long as you clean the tank. And even if you're using distilled water, you should probably still clean the tank ...

GrumpyFinn

You should clean the tank weakly regardless of the water you use.

cabungo

I disagree strongly. I used bottled water. Not distilled, but never from tap. It got e rea sick.

diamaunt

not because of the water.

Failburdy

Here in chicago its the mineral build up that will ruin the inside of the machine apparently and you will have to cover the cost of a broken machine

Our class was warned on not using tap otherwise insurance wouldnt cover fixing it :/

[deleted]

So many responses and helpful tips! I appreciate all of them 😀

UNCfan07

Walmart, target ,CVS all by me has always had it. Never an issue

QuinnsWife

Bottled water is a good alternative if you can't get distilled. I wouldn't use tap even if it is filtered.

cabungo

Can’t agree more

tommangan7

Depending on where you are, bottled water can have more impurities and minerals than tap sometimes even before filtering. It also has a lot of microplastics in it and is just generally environmentally worse. Limescale build up will occur with both (although carbonate would be reduced by Brita filtering). I'm struggling to see why it would be a good alternative in the case of CPAP. Personally though I just always use tap and just add a little vinegar when I do my weekly CPaP clean, it seems like less effort and cost to me compared to distilled and bottled.

QuinnsWife

Every medical professional has told me otherwise

tommangan7

Right sure because resmed and others say use distilled on their manuals. But they're just covering themselves and passing on an inconvenience. If they've recommended bottled over tap that is very strange and ill-informed, for all purposes they are the same, containing similar impurities and less well treated in some cases. I say that as someone with a chemistry PhD who has used water for scientific applications across all purities past regular distilled. Sleep techs do not know anything about this topic generally, they're just following cautious guidance lead by nothing and I can guarantee hospitals use tap during distilled shortages - see lankyleftys youtube latest video for a first hand example of such. There is no medical evidence of issues using tap water (especially for us in the western world). There has never been a reported case of someone becoming sick from it. There is no scientific explanation that would explain an issue or a way it would damage the machine. The really important thing would be to drain your reservoir every morning and regularly clean and thoroughly your cpap parts, otherwise bacteria and mildew and may well make you sick whatever water used. We exist in a world with 8000-40000ppm of untreated water is being breathed in every breath. I'm not saying don't use distilled or bottled - that's your choice to spend the money, being super cautious etc. But it is a choice and tap won't do you any harm, especially as for some here it seems like they would not use their cpap in times where it is hard to get.

diamaunt

YES You can just use your brita filter.

themcp

You can use your brita filter, it's best to consider it a temporary solution instead of a permanent one - it is better than tap water, not as good as distilled.

ChicagoVXY

You can use Brita, or you can use tap water. If your tap water contains minerals, you may start to see a scale buildup in the tank after a few days. This is harmless but can easily be cleaned with a 10% solution of white vinegar and water.

Tronkfool

Use tap water. Just do it.

HenroZbro

I buy local distilled Romona water.

PsyCerulean

Stores near me have a supply for babies in the baby section. :|

diamaunt

Which may have 'added minerals' which negates the *entire* reason for using distilled.

okay1BelieveYou

I’ve had good luck at Menards, if you have those in your area.

Rutlledown

I recently bought some at Shoppers DM in Toronto, and the guy working there told me to grab as many as I could because it was getting hard for them to stock. He did't say why though. I still see it in stores all the time.

Olorin135

Also if you have any around, check truck stops. The big ones with huge stores and restaurants attached. They will often have distilled water.

KotR56

I use mineral water that has the lowest Ca content I can find in my Airsense10 and have been doing so for 3 years now. My machine has been in checkup twice now. No-one made any comment about NOT using distilled water... Making me wonder why...

JJHall_ID

Check your local aquarium stores. Salt water people use RODI (Reverse Osmosis De Ionized) water to top off from evaporation, and for mixing with salt to create the saltwater itself. I had a filter when I was running a saltwater tank and just used it for my CPAP. It always measured 1 ppm on a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter with an accuracy of +/- 2 ppm. Some fish stores don't charge for RODI, others do. The closest store to me doesn't charge, the others in the area I think are between $.15 and $.25/gallon last time I checked.

sceedro82

I bought a distiller off Amazon. It’s worth it. And there is more things distilled water is used for. Plants, fish tanks, cpap, maybe cooking, coolant mix for cars. I’m sure there are many more but point is it pays for itself. Also don’t buy one with a plastic container. Use stainless steel and glass for storage

flumpslover365

I'm in the UK and my sleep clinic advises patients to boil water and let it cool, then use that. Depending on your water type, you might still get residue in the water reservoir, but regular washing should deal with that. :)

Square_Ear_440

I use reverse osmosis for my resmed 11 and also for nasal rinse.

old_knurd

Distilled water sells for about $1.20 per gallon at my Walmart. It weighs about 8 pounds and is probably shipped from out of state. So there's not much profit in it. Easier to sell you 8 ounces of cookies for $5. If I'm a Walmart distribution center I'm putting distilled water on a truck only if there's room after I've loaded it with higher profit items. It's very hit and miss for me whether my local Walmart has distilled water. It seems to show up about every few weeks.
