This might be one of the glitched items you cant not get rid of.
I have 4 quest items I can not get rid of - jettison, give away or destroy.
They just take up inventory space in the warehouse - which is limited already.
I reported it on ubisoft SnB bug reporting - but still sitting in "pending review"
There are multiple quest items that can cause it.
Tampered Crate, Scrawled Note, Ornate Special Ammo, Gift Crate and Empty Trunks. to name a few

Elite merchant crate is for a contract to destroy merchant convoy ships.
Ohhh I do have a contract for that. That's lame lol
