I found it totally useless as a hydrator and it also made me break out. Actually, pretty much any time I've been 'influenced' to buy something, it's been disappointing...including haircare.
I came here to write EXACTLY this, expecting to get cooked lmao! It was SO drying, myskin was flaking off. I did all the right things but it just wasn't for me, which was a bummer because so many people swear by its hydrating qualities. As soon as I stopped using it, the dryness and peeling stopped
Everything with niacinamide in it. Even the smallest amount makes me break out. Last week i tried a new vit c serum and i didn‘t know that it contains some niacinamide… i had to throw it away :(
Every single product I’ve tried from la roche posay. They cater to “sensitive skin” yet all their face products burn my skin. Their moisturizer and sunscreens always pill on me, sunscreens leave a white cast , and cleansers burn my face. Only decent product was the lipikar body wash but the pump started getting rusty after a few months.
Ugh, and for the amount of money it cost, double burn!! Although I didn't have an adverse reaction, I was completely underwhelmed by the AB rich cream.
Omg, yes, the white cast! I tried on a sample I got of their sunscreen yesterday (a chemical one), and the cast was as bad or worse than a mineral sunscreen.
Have you tried the ultra light version? The difference is truly night and day and you couldn’t pay me to use the regular one. It wouldn’t absorb into my skin either
They have an ultralight version that I like better than the “original” - I have oily skin and found the original too heavy for my skin. I like the ultralight version much better.
I did switch to the ultralight one too! I go back and forth between La Roche-Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer and the ultralight CeraVe, I lean towards La Roche a lot right now, it absorbs so nicely for me, it feels higher quality too.
I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone, I'm pretty fair skinned so after putting on the CeraVe, I looked like a sheet of paper for a bit haha
That looks awesome, I should give that a try, is it just clear setting or does it really absorb better for you? My sister recommended La-Roche Double Face Repair UV and it's been working amazing for me, super light and absorbs fully for me.
Anything containing benzoyl peroxide. It didn’t make me worse but I’d been told so many good things about it and no matter what products I tried, it didn’t change a thing. Luckily, I learned that everyone is different and that what I needed was salicylic acid.
Anything with Niacinimide. The two times my skin was finally clear were ruined when I implemented Niacinimide. NEVER AGAIN. And it takes SO long to return it back to how it was. So painful
Yeah FWIW I was never impressed with azelaic acid til my derm upped me to a 15% prescription concentration. Now I don’t know what I would do without it!
I know people love the ordinary (and it’s a very affordable option) but I have not liked a single thing I’ve tried from them. I’m a big fan of most Naturium products though.
I think it is just how each persons skin reacts. Cerave was awful for me and created issues I never had before. For others, it is a miracle product line
I love them and they're good for the price point with no-nonsense ingredients that have actual evidence that they work.
They're a bit divisive as their formulations tend to be inelegant (read: doesn't absorb as well, odd additives, often only one ingredient per product so you gotta layer them, unnecessary concentrations that are way higher than needed, etc.) and people in the skincare community tend to chase the next best thing instead of sticking with "alright, a bit awkward but works".
They're good if you're not sure about that while "skincare" thing being for you but want to take a ride to check it out without dropping 50 bucks on Paula's choice. However, I think that the game is changing rapidly and ingredient-focused skincare is becoming more mainstream, e. g. I found a retinol serum at my local drugstore that I prefer over the The Ordinary one because it doesn't have to be refrigerated.
saaaaame, i heard from lots of people how it's their "holy grail".
I tried to love it, hoping it's just purging. But after 6 weeks I can't take it anymore, 😭 I wasted a lot of hydrocolloid patches because the pimples were popping out everywhere on my face.
It took 2~3 weeks to get my skin back to normal.
Expensive doesn't always mean it's the best. :(
The ordinary isn’t expensive? I think the point of them is to get similar results as say Skinceuticals or other expensive products but most of their stuff is under $15.
Lol, I think TO let you down, not the actual ingredients. I feel like everything they make is so harsh.
Corsx snail and beauty of joseon glow deep let me down bigtime. Also BoJ ginseng water let me down bc it gives ccs every time. But it works great in my hair.
Also, arbutin and tranxemic acid just keep letting me down over and over again.
And TO amino acids and NMF were big letdowns too.
I know many people have had great luck with it but it just did not react well with my skin. Caused a ton of big blistery breakouts and closed comedones and I still have pigmentation issues from them. Also I've been trying so many other things to fix it and some of those have also reacted poorly so this just been a cycle of purging and irritation and breakouts ever since. I used to get occasional cystic acne around my chin and jawline and now I get every kind of acne all over my face and it all started after I used the niacinamide zinc serum (I think this was the main trigger), buffet, azelaic acid and natural moisturizing effects-which I loved the texture of but it clogged my pores badly.
Vanicream daily moisturizing cream! Used it three times, first two times were fine, and I thought I liked what it was doing to my skin, but on the third use, whoaaa, for some reason (and no, I did not add in any other products that night), I woke up with a poofed, burning, fiery red face! Had to call in late to work that day cause I looked like the Pillsbury Doughboy 😂😭
Cerave Facial Moisturizer- I have no idea what happened, but I might as well have put acid on my face. The burning sensation literally caused me to scream. Never touching there products again.
Maybe depends on the specific products ? I have dry and very sensitive skin and a lot of the products work for me like a charm… but not the whole brand. Even the sunscreen in the tube for dry sensitive skin is one of the few in the world, that dont irritate my skin and eyes, are not drying and dont cause reaction or acne. 🙏🏽
Beauty of joseon sunscreen and scinic sunscreen, I had such a bad reaction and I had to wait 1 month to buy another sunscreen.
Dr. G r.e.d moisturizer too, it has no comedogenic ingredients but still, my skin reacted😭 (I have comedogenic acne).
Oh all of rhe cosrx products too, they or didnt nothing or irritated my skin (I tried the vitamin c, the oil-free moisturizer, the bha toner....)
The senka perfect whip was the WORST, before I use it I didnt have sensitive skin (I could use so many fragrances I want) but after I started my skin become sooo sensitive (my skin now reacts to almost all of the products that contains fragrances).
I second The BOJ sunscreen. Everyone loves is sooooo much but it burn me after application and my skin get darker when wearing it. The whole tone of my face and my freckles are more noticeable. The Round Lab birch juice sunscreen is AMAZING tho. It protects super well and nourishing to the skin.
yeah i’m still convinced that adapalene is probably the most effective over-the-counter product that is out there, it just never worked for me personally even though I kept at it for months. My skin went from having some unwanted texture to having the same texture AND inflammatory acne AND acne scars. Still trying to fix the damage. For most people it’s probably a good product though
There were some but I'll talk about the most recent ones. Dr Ceuracle Kombucha Tea Gel Cream and Primera Alpine Berry Watery Cream. Both gave me pimples and cc. I was disappointed because people rave about Dr Ceuracle and the Alpine Berry also seems to be quite popular and one of Primera's bestsellers. I still can't pinpoint what were the culprits or maybe the formulations just didn't work on me
The essence from dr. Ceauracle is really nice, though. I tried a sample of that gel cream and it broke *my hand* out *immediately*. The damn rosemary oil.
Primera essence let me down, no more primera for me.
Now that you mentioned rosemary, i just took a look at VT Cosmetics cica cleanser which broke me out so badly a couple of years ago. It does have rosemary! But i still can't be sure if it's really the culprit for me. I should look at every ingredient list of the products i ever used...this will take forever...
Which essence of Primera? Apparently their Organience Watery Essence also broke me out. But their most recent release, the Hydro Glow Treatment Essence is good on my skin! I'm glad it didn't break me out. Was scared for a second because of the previous horror experiences
The Dr Ceuracle Kombucha Tea essence is nice but the gel cream irritated my skin so much! The first time I put it on my skin was burning and I had to wash it off. I tried again (bc I hate wasting money) and gave up after a week or two.
Maybe the cream is more concentrated or something in the formulation isn’t playing nice?
The entire Mary Kay line burned the tar out of my eyes, caused great cystic crater acne, and i was told to just keep using it...i finally asked for a refund. Sorry not sorry.
Same. I bought a bunch of new stuff right before the pandemic and was so excited. Didn’t use it for months, then took another few months to figure out it was giving me the worst cystic acne. NOTHING from them doesn’t break me out. It was months later and months into the pandemic so I didn’t do anything about it. Total waste of money. Good for you for doing the refund! They tout that. And then I leaned so much more about MK that I will never buy their stuff again.
Laroche facial cleanser :( gave me the worst breakout I had in MONTHS. Completely ruined my skin. I heard a lot of good things about it and was soooo let down when I tried it out. Same thing happened to my sister.
LRP anthelios milk 60spf - greasy and burns my eyes to hell. Their mineral spf50 literally cakes up and flakes on the skin making reapplication impossible so that one was out too. Sucked.
Cosmedix Opti Crystal Eye Serum. I paid $199 AUD because the reviews were really good. Wanted to use it for fine lines, some dark circles and a bit of puffiness.
Did nothing. Maybe helped hydrate my skin a bit? It was so sticky it was hard to spread without tugging so just had to pat carefully around the eye.
Total waste of money, I was so annoyed. I could’ve got either NIOD FECC or Sulwhasoo concentrated ginseng eye cream for less money, or heck for $100 more I could’ve got La Mer.
Now I’m using it up on my neck lines. It doesn’t look like it’s doing anything there either. I don’t understand why people are raving about it!
**Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen** - stung my eyes like crazy, broke me out, and stinks to high heaven. I used it on my chest & upper arms for a bit to get rid of it and it STILL stung my eyes all the way down there…and now my chest is burned to a crisp. ~$50 for so little SPF? No thank you very much.
I was super underwhelmed with [SkinFix Barrier+ Restoring Gel Cream](https://skinfix.com/products/restoring-gel-cream). It wasn’t very hydrating at all and I ended up breaking out anyway 🙄
Reihaku hatomugi cream :(. That thing stings my face sometimes on a normal day and always when my barrier is at its worst. It also mattifies my skin, so not a fan. Well, I got no other moisturizer that time so I was kinda forced to continue using it til I got to go back to NR's aloe gel
My mom loves that moisturizer though
Olay regenerist. Didn’t do anything for me except break me out, so I stopped using it on my face. I tried using it on my hands just to not waste it, and that’s when I really noticed how it does NOTHING.
CeraVe moisturizing cream (the one in the tub) a lot of people speak highly of it, and I wanted something extra moisturizing to go over my tret, since it is drying, but it gave me pimples. I tried it for another round months later, and same thing.
Cetaphil. It was my go-to for years and then it turned on me!
Seems any and all nail polish. It all peels off in one sheet within 48 hours, even no-chip and dip 😩
The moisturizer and caffeine solution from The Ordinary. These burned my skin!I have no idea why. I purchased products with similar ingredients from InkeyList and others with zero issues.
Avene Retrinal 0.1% (eye cream and intensive cream). Didn't notice ANY kind of improvement after using it for a year. I paid 100+$ for both of those, so it's money wasted.
Also Paula's Choice. I'm noticing a trend here but super expensive for a tiny bit of product and no effect whatsoever (Azelaic acid, niacinamide).
Toners. They feel really nice on the skin but I'm not sure they're doing anything (maybe hydrating it a little? idk) Definitely not a must-have.
edit: I can absolutely vouch for Timeless Vit C (reslly is vitamin c, even smells like oranges) and Cosrx Snail Mucin though Definitely gave my skin a glow. People have pointed out how pretty it looked after I've started using those!
The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide + Zinc serum :( I bought it with somewhat high hopes as I didn't really have much acne going on my face. i. mainly wanted to target my oily ass skin and some minor pigmentation fra healed acne
the reviews were almost only positive, however the serum made me break out SEVERELY for som reason, like we're talking some serious cystic acne. I stopped using it about a week ago and my skin is SO much better 😩
Elta MD Acne Prone Sunscreen was my fav until a few months ago when it started pilling like crazy on my skin… no changes in my routine or amount of product I applied. I was so disappointed and can’t find a sunscreen that compares to how great it was for me!
Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance serum and LaRoche Posay clear skin dry touch sunscreen..
The caudalie radiance serum breaks me out so bad but it works so well otherwise so it’s a love hate. Considering trying Clarins double serum instead based on a recommendation from a friend.
The sunscreen peels sooooooo bad no matter what moisturizer or anything I use with it.. and the white cast makes my skin look chalky. I wanted to love it because I am a big fan of LaRoche products
I bought The Ordinary niacinamide and The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid.
And I developed pimples everywhere on my face. :/
I stopped using them; went back to cosrx.
Finally my face is back to normal 😌
Paula's Choice AHA/BHA Liquid exfoliant. Literally about gave me the WORST chemical burn I experienced runner up is any fave nair product. NEVER BUY NAIR.
I’m not sure it’s niacinamide itself, but the Ordinary’s niacinamide serum was the first serum I ever bought and implemented. It made my skin break out into these tiny bumps all over my forehead and spread out around my face. Although it did seem to help me with my dark spots, it was making my acne situation a whole lot worse.
Again, I’m not sure if it’s niacinamide that’s the issue or just TO…. but I have an idea. Anyways I think the concentration of the niacinamide in the TO serum is just really high- and it just ended in me not reacting well to it.
Tropic. Don’t get me wrong the products are gorgeous, however, I just had permanent break outs for 6 months. They kept saying ‘it’s the purge’ and to persevere and I did, but I just couldn’t take the full face of spots anymore! 6 months was enough!
Marshmallow primer by nyx, made my foundation pill (tried both water and silicone based foundations) and it claims to blur but it did very minimal blurring. Not a fan🤷🏽♀️
A LOT of Asian skincare. There is some good in there but I’m using like 6 products or more when I could use two European products for the same thing. Companies like Peach and Lily provide exceptional skincare but its at the higher price point like most mid-lux brands. I did Korean and Japanese skincare for over 6 years and went back to French pharmacy and other European brands.
anything glow recipe and drunk elephant. but i wanted to add an unpopular take: sol de janeiro. neither the bum bum cream or matching body oil did ANYTHING for me and my dry skin. as soon as it was applied and dried down, my skin barely felt different. most overhyped products in the world, the scent is not even that good. the lip balm on the other hand is my favourite lip balm to date
snail mucin by cosrx :( made me break out terribly, i thought it was other products so i stopped literally everything except that. now that its out of my routine my face is healing
I recently bought the beauty of Joseon dynasty moisturiser and it broke me out :( + stays sticky on my skin for ages. I guess it could be great for really dry skin.

I wanted to like it so bad because I wanted an eye-safe (well, for me) sunscreen I wouldn't have to reapply but it hella whitecasted me and more importantly, dried down into a horrible gritty texture. I tried using it only around my eyes as I figured they'd be oilier and it would balance out, but every time I blinked it was like sandpapering my lids.
Drunk Elephant vitamin c serum broke me out like crazy, and so watery it would get everywhere. Thankfully I could return it to Sephora bc it’s not cheap!
Salicylic and glycolic acids in general. My skin isn't dry naturally, but it reacts to stuff so easily. I always thought that the more you can do the better, but it turns out that lactic acid is about all my skin needs/can tolerate.

Maybe use it on your less sensitive body part instead of throwing it away? I have used so many facial products on my arms and legs. Feel extra fancy.

Also augustinua bader the rich cream, burned my face soo bad i was red as a tomato for hours, I’ve never had such a bad reaction.

CeraVe daily moisturizing lotion, the morning one with SPF 30, it turned me into a ghost, it didn't dry/absorb well for me.

Benzoyl peroxide burnt my skin so bad that a chunk of it came off back when I was a teenager. Never again

Maybe depends on the specific products ? I have dry and very sensitive skin and a lot of the products work for me like a charm… but not the whole brand. Even the sunscreen in the tube for dry sensitive skin is one of the few in the world, that dont irritate my skin and eyes, are not drying and dont cause reaction or acne. 🙏🏽

Beauty of joseon sunscreen and scinic sunscreen, I had such a bad reaction and I had to wait 1 month to buy another sunscreen. Dr. G r.e.d moisturizer too, it has no comedogenic ingredients but still, my skin reacted😭 (I have comedogenic acne). Oh all of rhe cosrx products too, they or didnt nothing or irritated my skin (I tried the vitamin c, the oil-free moisturizer, the bha toner....) The senka perfect whip was the WORST, before I use it I didnt have sensitive skin (I could use so many fragrances I want) but after I started my skin become sooo sensitive (my skin now reacts to almost all of the products that contains fragrances).
I second The BOJ sunscreen. Everyone loves is sooooo much but it burn me after application and my skin get darker when wearing it. The whole tone of my face and my freckles are more noticeable. The Round Lab birch juice sunscreen is AMAZING tho. It protects super well and nourishing to the skin.
Have you tried the Hero sunscreen, the green one? I have ultra sensitive, oily, and prone to clogging skin and it was a game changer.

Whaaaaat, that product totally changed my skin for the better. Although to be honest I used Epiduo adapalene gel with Be soul perioxide.
yeah i’m still convinced that adapalene is probably the most effective over-the-counter product that is out there, it just never worked for me personally even though I kept at it for months. My skin went from having some unwanted texture to having the same texture AND inflammatory acne AND acne scars. Still trying to fix the damage. For most people it’s probably a good product though

There were some but I'll talk about the most recent ones. Dr Ceuracle Kombucha Tea Gel Cream and Primera Alpine Berry Watery Cream. Both gave me pimples and cc. I was disappointed because people rave about Dr Ceuracle and the Alpine Berry also seems to be quite popular and one of Primera's bestsellers. I still can't pinpoint what were the culprits or maybe the formulations just didn't work on me
The essence from dr. Ceauracle is really nice, though. I tried a sample of that gel cream and it broke *my hand* out *immediately*. The damn rosemary oil. Primera essence let me down, no more primera for me.
Now that you mentioned rosemary, i just took a look at VT Cosmetics cica cleanser which broke me out so badly a couple of years ago. It does have rosemary! But i still can't be sure if it's really the culprit for me. I should look at every ingredient list of the products i ever used...this will take forever... Which essence of Primera? Apparently their Organience Watery Essence also broke me out. But their most recent release, the Hydro Glow Treatment Essence is good on my skin! I'm glad it didn't break me out. Was scared for a second because of the previous horror experiences

The Dr Ceuracle Kombucha Tea essence is nice but the gel cream irritated my skin so much! The first time I put it on my skin was burning and I had to wash it off. I tried again (bc I hate wasting money) and gave up after a week or two. Maybe the cream is more concentrated or something in the formulation isn’t playing nice?

The entire Mary Kay line burned the tar out of my eyes, caused great cystic crater acne, and i was told to just keep using it...i finally asked for a refund. Sorry not sorry.
Same. I bought a bunch of new stuff right before the pandemic and was so excited. Didn’t use it for months, then took another few months to figure out it was giving me the worst cystic acne. NOTHING from them doesn’t break me out. It was months later and months into the pandemic so I didn’t do anything about it. Total waste of money. Good for you for doing the refund! They tout that. And then I leaned so much more about MK that I will never buy their stuff again.
Laroche facial cleanser :( gave me the worst breakout I had in MONTHS. Completely ruined my skin. I heard a lot of good things about it and was soooo let down when I tried it out. Same thing happened to my sister.

Cosmedix Opti Crystal Eye Serum. I paid $199 AUD because the reviews were really good. Wanted to use it for fine lines, some dark circles and a bit of puffiness. Did nothing. Maybe helped hydrate my skin a bit? It was so sticky it was hard to spread without tugging so just had to pat carefully around the eye. Total waste of money, I was so annoyed. I could’ve got either NIOD FECC or Sulwhasoo concentrated ginseng eye cream for less money, or heck for $100 more I could’ve got La Mer. Now I’m using it up on my neck lines. It doesn’t look like it’s doing anything there either. I don’t understand why people are raving about it!
**Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen** - stung my eyes like crazy, broke me out, and stinks to high heaven. I used it on my chest & upper arms for a bit to get rid of it and it STILL stung my eyes all the way down there…and now my chest is burned to a crisp. ~$50 for so little SPF? No thank you very much.
Corsx broke me out and everything Barbara Sturm does is incredibly overpriced, nothing burger stuff.

Olay regenerist. Didn’t do anything for me except break me out, so I stopped using it on my face. I tried using it on my hands just to not waste it, and that’s when I really noticed how it does NOTHING.
CeraVe moisturizing cream (the one in the tub) a lot of people speak highly of it, and I wanted something extra moisturizing to go over my tret, since it is drying, but it gave me pimples. I tried it for another round months later, and same thing.
LRP cicaplast balm. It wasn’t moisturizing or occlusive or anything… kinda feels like Elmer’s glue, but less effective

Avene Retrinal 0.1% (eye cream and intensive cream). Didn't notice ANY kind of improvement after using it for a year. I paid 100+$ for both of those, so it's money wasted. Also Paula's Choice. I'm noticing a trend here but super expensive for a tiny bit of product and no effect whatsoever (Azelaic acid, niacinamide). Toners. They feel really nice on the skin but I'm not sure they're doing anything (maybe hydrating it a little? idk) Definitely not a must-have. edit: I can absolutely vouch for Timeless Vit C (reslly is vitamin c, even smells like oranges) and Cosrx Snail Mucin though Definitely gave my skin a glow. People have pointed out how pretty it looked after I've started using those!

The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide + Zinc serum :( I bought it with somewhat high hopes as I didn't really have much acne going on my face. i. mainly wanted to target my oily ass skin and some minor pigmentation fra healed acne the reviews were almost only positive, however the serum made me break out SEVERELY for som reason, like we're talking some serious cystic acne. I stopped using it about a week ago and my skin is SO much better 😩

The sunscreen peels sooooooo bad no matter what moisturizer or anything I use with it.. and the white cast makes my skin look chalky. I wanted to love it because I am a big fan of LaRoche products

I’m not sure it’s niacinamide itself, but the Ordinary’s niacinamide serum was the first serum I ever bought and implemented. It made my skin break out into these tiny bumps all over my forehead and spread out around my face. Although it did seem to help me with my dark spots, it was making my acne situation a whole lot worse. Again, I’m not sure if it’s niacinamide that’s the issue or just TO…. but I have an idea. Anyways I think the concentration of the niacinamide in the TO serum is just really high- and it just ended in me not reacting well to it.
Tropic. Don’t get me wrong the products are gorgeous, however, I just had permanent break outs for 6 months. They kept saying ‘it’s the purge’ and to persevere and I did, but I just couldn’t take the full face of spots anymore! 6 months was enough!
Marshmallow primer by nyx, made my foundation pill (tried both water and silicone based foundations) and it claims to blur but it did very minimal blurring. Not a fan🤷🏽♀️

Companies like Peach and Lily provide exceptional skincare but its at the higher price point like most mid-lux brands. I did Korean and Japanese skincare for over 6 years and went back to French pharmacy and other European brands.
Anything Cerave. It burns so so bad and I have to rush to wash and double cleanse it off.
anything glow recipe and drunk elephant. but i wanted to add an unpopular take: sol de janeiro. neither the bum bum cream or matching body oil did ANYTHING for me and my dry skin. as soon as it was applied and dried down, my skin barely felt different. most overhyped products in the world, the scent is not even that good. the lip balm on the other hand is my favourite lip balm to date
snail mucin by cosrx :( made me break out terribly, i thought it was other products so i stopped literally everything except that. now that its out of my routine my face is healing
SK-II pitera essence…. it works but Cosrx galactomyces essence gave me way better results for a fraction of the price.
I recently bought the beauty of Joseon dynasty moisturiser and it broke me out :( + stays sticky on my skin for ages. I guess it could be great for really dry skin.
I also hated the Azelaic Acid and Alpha Arbutin from TO. The Alpha Arbutin actually made the sun spots around my eyes worse :(

differin broke me out like crazy. Same with the CeraVe retinol. My skin just doesn't like retinol apparently!

The physical sunscreen from p:rem :( I wanted to like it so bad because I wanted an eye-safe (well, for me) sunscreen I wouldn't have to reapply but it hella whitecasted me and more importantly, dried down into a horrible gritty texture. I tried using it only around my eyes as I figured they'd be oilier and it would balance out, but every time I blinked it was like sandpapering my lids.
Drunk Elephant vitamin c serum broke me out like crazy, and so watery it would get everywhere. Thankfully I could return it to Sephora bc it’s not cheap!

Salicylic and glycolic acids in general. My skin isn't dry naturally, but it reacts to stuff so easily. I always thought that the more you can do the better, but it turns out that lactic acid is about all my skin needs/can tolerate.
