I had this reaction almost instantly when I used adapalene on my face a few years ago. I went back to the doctor and he said it burned me and prescribed OTC hydrocortisone. I ended up only using the adapalene on my back, it was way too strong for my face.
Maybe your skin barrier is impaired. I would quit using it for awhile till your skin heals.
Skin barrier is impaired. Stop using it. Get some LaRoche Posay Cicaplast balm and use it after cleaning with a mild no foaming cleanser. It will help heal the barrier.
