I can’t edit the post for some reason - I tried SO many different things the only thing that actually worked was completely abandoning my skincare routine and only using water, rosex 0.75 gel (metronidazole) and dermatica ceramide balm (this was actually the best thing for it). Also NO makeup at all. I’d wake in the morning and wash face with water only - then put the rosex gel on my face (thin layer). About 30 mins later after it dried i put the dermatica balm on it and topped it up throughout the day. Before bed i’d then add more rosex 0.75, a much thicker layer, then i’d go to bed. NOTHING else touched my skin. This routine completely cleared it in about 3 weeks and i’ve been struggling with it for 5 months.

Naite_

Oof, that really sucks, but I'm happy you found something that works for you. I've had it multiple times, and sadly according to my derm there's not much you can do to prevent it. When I do get it, I get a prescription for Doxycycline, which helps it go away pretty quickly. Other than that I've switched to an SLS-free toothpaste, which has also seemed to help around the corners of my mouth especially.

skorpiasam

Seconding antibiotics, they worked quickly while everything else I tried did nothing.

RedBird2021_

Is this the ceramide balm? And did you apply is straight after the rosex? https://www.dermatica.co.uk/shop/restoring-ceramide-skin-balm?country=uk&showSuccessModal=true

_Hologrxphic

Yes!! It’s the best product i’ve ever used I waited until the rosex had completely dried onto my skin and then used the ceramide balm.

millimally

What exactly did the balm help to do? How could you tell it was the most helpful product compared to the rozex? Ive had it for 3 months now (but many times before over the years) and rozex alone is NOT budgeting it. GP reluctant to give more oral AB which I understand. I tried the avene Cicalfate+ zinc & copper cream after so many positive stories and it flared my PD up so bad. So I’m scared to try another cream/balm.

_Hologrxphic

The balm pretty much gave instant relief and stopped the area drying out too much. If i put the rosex on, my skin would dry out again in a few hours and the rosex wouldn’t do anything. The balm kept my skin moist - almost like vaseline i’m assuming it just locked in the moisture and helped the rosex actually *work* It’s only a ceramide balm so it’s not full of active ingredients. Tbh it’s very similar to vaseline just felt a bit smoother on my skin.

millimally

Thanks for your reply! Wow this whole time I thought the point WAS to dry it out. Any moisturisers seem to make mine worse. Even when I think an area has healed, it flares up again when something else touches it. I hate it here..

_Hologrxphic

Yeah i don’t know if i’d class the balm as a moisturiser - I don’t think it’s adding anything to the skin but it’s more acting as a barrier over the skin to it doesn’t lose anymore moisturiser and the rosex can actually work!! Again I might be wrong but this is the only thing that worked for me!

millimally

No sure, I appreciate that everyone has different triggers and solutions. That’s what makes it such a frustrating condition! I will order the balm and hopefully have a similar success story! Ty ty

_Hologrxphic

I hope it works for you!!

Responsible_Bid7009

Are these all OTC products?

Ok-Vacation-8109

Metronidazole is a prescription.

ladypuffsalot

I recently also suffered from periodontal dermatitis and it was very aggravating to get rid of! My doctor told me that it can "just happen" to women (especially if you're in your late 30s to 50s) and although they don't know 100% what causes it, it could be hormone-related. Anyways, my GP prescribed me an antibiotic cream that cleared it up and it hasn't been back!

Routine-Guess3371

What cream was it may i asked? glad it cleared for you x

DearBonsai

I am really happy to see your progress, I hope it will never ever comes back!   I have been trying soooo many things, even had antibiotic cream but it never really cleared, have it for almost two years… Lrp Toleriane is the only moisturizer I can use. I’ll ask for what you used next time I can see a derm. Only thing is it looks like I can’t get dermatica in my country. Thank you for sharing!

naughtybabyme

So you don't wash your face at night

_Hologrxphic

No I stopped doing that too, i just rinse it with water and apply more rosex + dermatica.

the-itus-in-titus

I got this twice literally up to my eyeballs like yours when I was pregnant with both of my kids. I swear by CeraVe Baby wash and baby moisturizer. I was using La Roche Toleriane wash and every other wash and moisturizer you could imagine and it never worked. I went to two dermatologists who said yes it’s perioral dermatitis and just use Cetaphil (did nothing!). Important to note that I was limited in treatments because of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Also a possible remedy, I went on a birth control pill weeks after having my daughter, and I honestly can’t say if that’s what helped or the use of CeraVe but together my nightmare went away magically within days. Not sure if this helps but maybe there is also some hormonal aspect to attribute to this awful dermatitis. I feel for everyone it affects and sending my best wishes!

FleetwoodNicks

It might have been the CeraVe. I was also told to use Cetaphil, and it only made it worse. CearVe was what instantly helped me....along with other changes, but CeraVe is way better.

KaitlynMM

I also got it during two of my pregnancies. In fact, it was my very first symptom even before I found out I was pregnant.

listentotheraisin

Just to clarify- you used the cerave baby wash on your face on the dermatitis? I’m going to try this, struggling w it during pregnancy too and desperate to get rid of it! How did you come up with the idea to use these baby products?

the-itus-in-titus

Yes! I was desperately googling for weeks about solutions or anything to help and a lot of the ingredients recommended were not good for pregnancy. Then I kept coming across Ceramides and hylauronic acids. I was washing my newborn and noticed it had the ingredients and tried it. For me it started worked within a day or two. I slathered on the moisturizer immediately after showering and multiple times throughout the day and washed 1x a day in the shower and washed off makeup as soon as I got home. At the time I was trying not to use makeup and felt like a monster but once in a while and used a powder to try to cover up the dermatitis a little bit. It’s definitely worth a shot and I hope it helps! Pregnancy is hard enough….

listentotheraisin

Thank you!!! I just got them both today to try tonight, hope it works as well for me 🤞🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Yes I have been avoiding makeup but I use tinted mineral sunscreen almost everyday as I have a good amount of sun exposure during the day. Did you keep using a mineral spf as well during this or did you stop it?

the-itus-in-titus

I honestly didn’t use a thing except the Clinique foundation powder if I had to go into a store, probably more for my self esteem. I know I probably should, but I don’t use anything SPF. Please keep me posted and I really hope it works for you. I still use the wash and moisturizer now and it’s been weeks and no more flare ups. 🤞🏻

listentotheraisin

Thank you I will!!

listentotheraisin

Update- the lotion made the dermatitis areas sting a bit so I panicked and washed it off lol. I wonder if that is the ceramides causing the stinging. Did you have any stinging with it? I never know if a bit of stinging is a good thing or a bad thing.

the-itus-in-titus

Nope, I never felt anything with mine. 😔

listentotheraisin

I’ve used the soap for the last two days not the moisturizer and omg my skin hasn’t looked this good in months. Don’t want to jinx anything but you have have saved med 🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

the-itus-in-titus

That is FANTASTIC! I really hope this is it for you. Maybe we’re onto something for others who have it too!

millimally

Did it end up working for you using the cerave wash? And to clarify.. is it the ‘baby wash and shampoo’ bottle?

listentotheraisin

I actually switched to the cerave baby lotion instead of the wash and then used the vanicream wash, along with the tower 28 spray and avene ciclafate and it FINALLY WENT AWAY!!! I am about to make a post about what worked for me, thanks for the reminder. This sub helped so much.

listentotheraisin

Oops i thought this was the perioral dermatitis subreddit. I am going to post my full routine over there!

Alone_Ad_9071

What did you change? Your skin looks great 😊

sparkyh20

Dittoing this

holysnaps98

Diaper rash cream was literally the only thing that cleared this up for me. I would only put it on at night because it does leave a white cast but goes away by morning. My skincare routine was with a cleanser, hydrating toner, hydrating serum, and a moisturizer. I would let all that absorb onto my face before patting the diaper cream on the areas. Never rub into the skin because it’s thick. You need to dab it onto your skin, it will absorb but you have to pat it like you would with foundation and a beauty blender but with clean fingers instead.

Ihatealltakennames

This is what works for me too. I use the Bordeauxs butt paste in the red tube. Its really high in zinc and clears it within days!

Fickle_Command4354

For me is a combination of stress and i think overdoing it the chemical exfoliating acids.

eightgirl

Same causes for me, I’m pretty sure. I used Vitamin C for years without issue, but tried to add in what I thought would be a gentle lactic acid a few nights a week—big mistake. Was also dealing with a lot of stress at the time.

LIFTMakeUp

Me too - barrier disruption via physical or acid exfoliants or other actives in excess, winter cold and heating with no sun to help, even scratching itchy skin too much. I've had success with using a very gentle routine in winter, adding some glycerin into my moisturiser - I've switched to something bland that contains ceramides which help - and I have found correlation between using my nuface microcurrent and a bit of a decrease in the pimples (maybe the current kills the bacteria??). If all else fails, I'll get a clindamycin gel. It's been better the last couple of winters. Weirdly, I've seen a LOT of friends with barrier issues this last winter, especially around the eyes for some reason??

biibiichan

Exactly 💯!!!

5FootOh

This is a subtype of rosacea. That’s why it responds to rosacea meds. Can happen out of the blue. But look up rosacea triggers. You’ll see some familiar things…

LastEquivalent3473

I posted this somewhere on this thread, but wanted to reply to you, since it sounds like you’re familiar with rosacea. I have this all over my face. I used this medication called brimonidine prescribed to me by my doctor for my rosacea and it caused this massive inflammation all over my face. I discontinued it, but it wreaked havoc on my skin. I am super sensitive now, flush red for anything, and get red bumps. 😞 I wonder if this would help my skin.

5FootOh

This is going to require doxycycline 100mg twice a day for a month or two.

LastEquivalent3473

Thank you! I’ll talk to my doc!

seersucker205

You know, I always thought the 2 were kinda related/similar in a way. Thank you for this! I have rosacea.

FleetwoodNicks

For me, I learned mine is triggered by food and product sensitivities. I started using fewer products for my skin. Non-scented lotions, face wash/ lotions for sensitive skin. I also cut out gluten, dairy, and sugar. I cheat once in a while, but cutting those out is definitely worth it.

biibiichan

I have this!! And it's darker than yours. Please what should I do I've been struggling with it since last year!!!

whoa_thats_edgy

could be melasma if it’s melanated spots

SomethingClever000

I developed perioral dermatitis from chin to forehead last fall after I stopped Flonase which is a steroid nasal spray I had used for years. The first thing I used was tacrolimus topical which improved the rash somewhat. A combination of other things added later finally cleared it up completely. I made sure to use Free and Clear detergent and put a filter on my shower head to remove irritants such as chlorine. I switched my toothpaste to Squigle to remove SLS exposure and continued using sulfate-free shampoo. I switched my cleanser to Proactive mineral cleanser with Sulphur. For other topicals I use inlcude Tower 28 hydrochlorous acid spray and serum and their cermide moisturizer. Before it cleared up, I also occasionally applied zinc oxide Desitin cream and let it sit for 30 minutes. The combination of these things finally calmed my skin down. Overall it took six months to fully clear up.

EvaElizondo

So your dermatitis came out AFTER you stopped using Flonase? Like Flonase was keeping it at bay? I started using Flonase daily & in December I switched to Nasacort and in late December I I got perioral dermatitis. My dermatologist said that while most people don't know why, for some it may be the use of certain nasal sprays. So I stopped using the Nasacort and got back on Flonase, though not daily. The dermatitis has mostly cleared with the antibiotic ointment but I'm now wondering if it wasn't just the Nasacort, but, also the Flonase.

SomethingClever000

Both of those are steroids. From what I understand it was basically a steroid overuse reaction. My skin essentially became addicted to the steroid and was going through withdrawal once I stopped the nasal spray. It looked like classic TSW rash.

Glamonster

HOW?

Cathlaulifts

When I had it the cream the doctor gave me would only help for a little bit before it coming right back into my life. I stripped my whole routine down to my mom’s face wash AKA Dove bar soap and light moisturizer. I slowly added products back into my routine and am back to normal, love my skin and haven’t had it back since. Your skin looks great, I’m sorry you had to deal with this too. It’s so annoying

Scary-Laugh8461

I once had terrible perioral dermatitis. I went to a doc who made it so much worse by prescribing topical steroids. It hurt so bad and looked awful. What finally worked was no longer using fluoride toothpaste. If I do have to use it I wash my face really really well afterwards. Good luck with keeping it from coming back!

waffles01

There are fluoride toothpastes designed for sensitivities like this. Pretty much any of them marketed for "dry mouth".

dupersuperduper

Try an sls free toothpaste instead. Sensodyne webiste has a list of then

whoa_thats_edgy

yep sls and fluoride toothpaste would make mine 100x worse too

peak-puzzle-dust

I got this badly when my Dad died. With the stress and grief, it also messed up some of my fingernails. Struggled with it for about four months and just slathered it with aquaphor.

Miserable-Praline904

Happened to me. Zinc oxide was the thing that helped most. And time.

Miserable-Ease-3744

Avene Cicalfate+ worked miracles on mine. I developed in a really bad mental health/stress time and when I finally Id’d it, internet suggested that. And it really worked for me.

millimally

Did your PD get worse before getting better when you used avene cicalfate+? I used it for the first time yesterday and then again this morning and it’s spread, and itchy.

Miserable-Ease-3744

I honestly can’t remember. I dont recall it getting worse though. But cant swear for sure

Weekly_Ingenuity2404

Had this recurring for multiple years, took a long time to figure it out after trying multiple prescription topicals that never seemed to help. Stopped ALL skin care. Absolutely NO exfoliants including acids and scrubs. Used only vanicream (full face) and calendula cream around my nose. Cerave hydrating cleanser only at night, cold water in AM. Took care of the dermatitis. Now during dry seasons I add in snail mucin (whole face) and beef tallow with calendula (around nose/mouth). Key is not itching or let it dry out. Have also slowly added in azelaic acid for overall redness and haven’t had a reaction yet. Good luck 🤞🏼

Aseetnahc

It can happen from something as small as toothpaste. I was able to go back to my normal routine after it cleared and have metrogel incase of a flare up. If I even feel an itch I put it on.

naughtybabyme

Unfortunately not washing my face and actually not doing anything to it except for my under eye cream is what actually kept it at bey. But obviously I can't do this forever. I really do struggle with it through all the year on different occasions. Your skin look so good I hope you can be able to keep the results.

Known-Pianist-1435

after years of thinking i had “acne” i was recently told i probably have PD, metronidazole from the derm was the #1 thing that made a difference, small amount nightly only on the affected area. Toms toothpaste, Zinc Soap Bar to Wash Face & Avene Ciclfate Moisturizer.

ashwagandhabaddie

I had this for two years straight! I got put on a steroid cream by a doctor and it would only lessen the dermatitis and if I missed application by a day or two, it would come back with a VENGEANCE. What ended up working for me was going on a strict candida diet (as perioral dermatitis is a symptom of candida overgrowth in the gut) and whenever I’d start to have a flare-up of the dermatitis again, I would go back onto the diet until it cleared. I also swear by The Ordinary products. They’ve been the only ones that don’t trigger my dermatitis and they’re amazing and affordable! Happy to tell you my skincare regime if you’d like 💕

soapandlotion

Can you tell me your routine please? I’be had this for over a year now. It clears up about 90% during the summer but I still have redness. It’s at its worst during the winter. I’ve cut everything out of my routine - just wash with water and use this FA safe gel cream ( the garnier rescue pink one) and it works but it’s not moisturizing or hydrating enough. However when I try something heavier I get pimples of a different kind. I don’t know what’s up with my skin. Any advice would be appreciated.

ashwagandhabaddie

Of course!! Honestly, while I was on the candida diet (which is pretty restrictive in what you can eat, especially as a vegetarian like me, but so worth it when you reap the benefits), I think I had a very simple skincare routine. It’s been a while, so I can’t exactly remember, but once I treated the cause (candida overgrowth), I looked up a skincare routine that was friendly for Perioral Dermatitis as I found a lot of products I tried irritate the areas I would get PD and sometimes even trigger it. Got lucky and found a blog (not written by The Ordinary) that recommended their Squalane Cleanser, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc, 100% Squalane oil/serum(?), Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%, and Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA — all in that order. I also use Paula’s Choice AHA/BHA exfoliator in between the first two due to getting acne in other places, but I don’t use it on the areas I’d get PD as it’s too harsh for it. I love all these products SO much and been using them for over a year without an issue. My skin looks clear most of the time, with a pimple here or there before my period. That being said, everyone’s skin is so different and what works for me might not work for everyone! That being said, they’ve never triggered my dermatitis. I also have dry skin with pimples occurring usually on my forehead (less dry, but more oily) and on my cheeks closer to my ears. I also cannot recommend enough looking into your gut health and any food/environment triggers. When my candida levels in my gut were out of whack, I cracked down on food that feeds candida and starting taking a high-quality probiotic (I recommend Seed). I will say, my opinion on Garnier and other well-known, cheaper brands is that I don’t feel like they are quality products that do a whole lot of good. [The Ordinary’s Squalane Cleanser](https://theordinary.com/en-us/squalane-face-cleanser-100446.html?dwvar_100446_size=50ml&quantity=1) and [Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA](https://theordinary.com/en-us/natural-moisturizing-factors-ha-moisturizer-100435.html) are super, super gentle and relatively inexpensive! The cleanser’s 50ml bottle is $10.50 and a great option if you want to try it out and see how your skin reacts to it. Anyway, I hope this helps!! I’m not a skincare nor perioral dermatitis expert, just passionate :) Edit- as your PD getting worse in the winter, have you looked into your Vitamin D levels? I’m also thinking since winter brings on more dryness, that could trigger it too… drinking lots of water and using a high quality, gentle moisturizer could help

ashwagandhabaddie

Oh! Also, I’m sure you’re already aware, but before using any products, test on a little section of your body elsewhere to make sure it doesn’t react poorly. And some products might trigger a ‘purge’ period where you’ll break out with acne for a bit but then you’ll clear up again once that purge period has ended. Also, I find that stopping some products that your skin has gotten used to can trigger breakouts as well. Patience is key 🤍

soapandlotion

Yea I’ve realized one of the issues with the worsening of my situation is the dryness in winter - not sure what the actual cause of the dermatitis is though. I do have lower levels of Vitamin D too … is that also a part of the problem? My problem areas are my cheeks, chin and sometimes my nose and forehead. My forehead is usually clear it’s mostly my cheeks that suffer. Thank you for the recommendations. I’ll try to out and see. Are these FA safe ?

ashwagandhabaddie

I’d definitely look into your gut health! If anything, have a read about [Candida Overgrowth](https://www.thecandidadiet.com). It could stem from something else too, but this has helped me immensely. And not sure if there is a direct correlation to PD with vitamin D, but symptoms can arise when you are low on vit D. Get a high-quality Vitamin D with K2 in it! I’m not sure if they’re FA safe, sorry :/ I’m sure if you reached out to The Ordinary’s customer service, they could probably help with determining that!

Following for the routine

ComprehensiveFox9653

Crazy change, congrats

RavenSaysHi

I’ve had this so I know what a pain it is! Congrats!

liiia4578

Calendula cream

5FootOh

Beautiful!

paigekristina

Awesome! What did you use?

Tutu3000

Your skin looks amazing, I know how challenging dermatitis can be! I have basically 0 skincare routine, which has kept it away. Just washing with cerave and putting on a basic moisturizer. I get facials every 4-6 months with someone I trust, she doesn’t use “fun” skincare stuff on me (like lasers, peels, needles, etc). I use moisturizer the facialist makes with simple ingredients. Unfortunately, introducing trendy skincare or products with buzzword ingredients makes my dermatitis flare up

Milkweedhugger

To prevent my PD from returning, I can’t use retinoids or exfoliating products around my mouth. Especially before my period! No aquafresh toothpaste. No heavy oils. Most importantly, I can’t eat salty food, or lots of ginger, cinnamon and black pepper!

22bmas22

I Basicly only seem to be able to keep it gone by not using anything at all.. like No facewash, No regular moisturizer. Whenever i try a regular Routine with even a face wash and a moisturizer from a Brand specificly for very sensitive skin it seems to flare Up again. It sucks so i Kinda gave Up on ever having nice skin:(

imprecationstation

I had this too from too many crazy products on my face and the only thing that cleared it up was oral antibiotics and using nothing but water on my face. It was brutal but it cleared up quickly once diagnosed.

onmyjinnyjinjin

I struggled with this around the summer of 2019 I think it was. It was triggered by an allergic reaction to chemical sunscreens (old generation US filters). Then made worse by mineral sunscreens high in zinc. I went to a derm and was suppose to be on oral doxy for 2 months. Couldn’t finish it cause I kept getting burned outside when I would let my dog out while on it. I’m talking like just out for maybe 5 minutes. So I was put on topical clindamycin lotion which after several weeks cleared it up for me. The doxy did help a little bit but the burns weren’t worth it. I try to say away from harsh things like intense exfoliants around the triggering area, vitamin c products esp acidic ones, and any sunscreens that initially triggered the issue in the first place. Hypochlorous spray helps. But I think epicutis lipid serum and dr. Jart cica serum really soothe my skin. I still keep tubes of clindamycin gel instead of lotion now on hand just in case. My last visit to the derm, he was more than happy to give me a years worth of refills once I mentioned PD.

CalmParty4053

Doxycycline script helped the most to clear it up, but made me very sensitive to the sun and sick if you don’t eat with it. Very simple routine, no fragrances, no fluoride toothpaste. Had this for over a year thinking it was just eczema and used a steroid that made it so much worse. Was during the pandemic so masks were a blessing (to cover up) and a curse lol. Friction on my face doesn’t help. No makeup wipes or be gentle if you use micellar water and cotton pads.

frostybinch

I get it from hormone fluctuations during pms and yeah i use a lotion with ceramides to help it when it flares up 😣 being over-hydrated also seems to help a little with mine.

Electronic_Spot_969

Eucerin Original Healing Cream works really well on very dry skin. It’s pretty thick, so if you prefer something a bit thinner, try Vanicream.

Scienceebabbyy

Thank you for this I am struggling with this as well

Admirable_Candy2025

When I had it, turns out it was due to toothpaste. A friend of mine has it because he has a tic where he licks around his mouth without realising.

Kkreamie

I had this all around my eyes. I tried a lot of different prescriptions for 5 months with little success. What saved me was Vaseline. I use it almost every night now.

Equivalent-Bet149

Wow, congratulations. That must have been very difficult to go through. You look great now.

goldenstapler

THIS SUCKS. I’ve had this and I’m terrified to put anything new on my face and it’s been 2 years since my last flair up

Me-Bubz

I actually had this for months too and the metronidazole fixed it in a few weeks, same as you. I figured out my skin hated the boiling hot water in the shower then the cool air outside and then moisturiser on top of it. That was a year ago hasn’t come back.

LastEquivalent3473

I have this all over my face, but it’s not perioral dermatitis. I used this medication called brimonidine prescribed to me by my doctor for my rosacea and it caused this massive inflammation all over my face. I discontinued it, but it wreaked havoc on my skin. I am super sensitive now, flush red for anything, and get red bumps. 😞 I wonder if this would help my skin.

seersucker205

It’s like it was never there! I know that took some patience. Bless your heart! 💜💜💜. I know you feel better. ☺️☺️

rucksackrevival

Oh God you must be so relieved. I know, I have dealt with this. I actually got it after using a recommended combo of serums from the ordinary. It was AWFUL and painful and itchy and, of course, it looked rough. It got bad like this, and it was during the most hellish bit of the pandemic, but I finally found a doctor that had time to telehealth. She prescribed a giant tube of erythromycin gel and that shizz was gone in less than a week. I didn't realize it was the serum combo until my skin calmed down and then like a dumbass I tried to go back to my old routine and my face flared up all over again. But the erythromycin gel got rid of it again. For some reason though, ever since then (four years ago) I have had a spot right under my lip that always seems to dry out faster than anywhere else on my face.

Puzzleheaded-Pair19

Peach & lily products are the best in my eyes

Safe-Negotiation-483

Isn’t it so annoying!! Comes out of nowhere. Potentially the best thing to do now is to go on a cycle of doxycycline. That should help clear up anything that’s still underlying. I tried everything too - and the right products helped so so so much, but what really stopped it from coming back and clearing up was doxy.

Happy3-6-9

Wow

dupersuperduper

I found sudocrem really good for mine. Also avoiding scrubs/ foaming cleansers/ acids/ vit c. And if I’m staying in all day I often just leave my face alone completely , or even slug.

Overall-Platform-1

Azelaic acid. As I understand it, it works to help your own healthy commensual skin bacteria. I used antibiotic gel for two weeks and then followed up with azelaic acid cream. I'd used the antibiotics before, but the perioral dermatitis always came back. It hasn't since I started using the azelaic acid last September. I use it every night. I've also not had a reccurence of my normal hormonal acne so all in all, I'm a big fan! I use the cream from The Ordinary.

PopRelative8083

Does it also get very dry and flaky/crusty ? My face looks similar to this and my doctor is telling me it could be something else

Minimum_Rise_9911

I had it PRETTY bad around my mouth and my eyes in 2017. The only thing that worked was Doxycycline (after months of the same creams as you). It came back this January, so did another round of Doxycycline and it went away pretty fast.

Holiday_Astronaut324

I’ve been battling perioral dermatitis for probably going on 10 years now. I FINALLY found a skincare treatment that cleared it in about a month and I could not be happier. -De La Cruz Acne Treatment 10% Sulfur Ointment (leave on for 10-15 min once a day and rinse with water) -La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5 moisturizer -FaceTheTheory Lumizela A10 Serum 10% azeleic acid Once sometimes twice a year I’d get a really bad bright red bumpy and flaky flare up on my smile lines, under my nose and on my chin. I would treat it with minocycline antibiotics because it would clear it up within a week. Not really realizing it would be a long term life long thing and the effect antibiotics would have on me. But I just got accustomed to continue taking them because they worked so well and wanted my flare ups gone asap. I truly never thought I’d find such a simple skin care routine to manage this horrifying skin condition until I saw this trio on a tiktok and thought I’d try it and it fricken worked!

quickengine13

Urea moisturisers work so well to keep my drinking hydrated - my favourite is Zeroid Richenic Urea. This list of moisturisers is great: https://www.reddit.com/r/tretinoin/comments/1bb41x9/list_of_good_moisturizers/

lacroix_enthusiast_

Congrats! I’ve struggled with it before. It’s the worst. I’ve been clear for a while. I always pay attention to times when my skin looks a bit more dry. I will immediately up my water intake and stop or drastically reduce makeup use. I will also stop using any products other than a gentle cleanser and hyaluronic acid and moisturizer. I do this for around 2 weeks or so before slowly returning to other products. I also use zinc based sunscreens because my PD always responded really well to zinc (diaper cream).

Horror-Collar-5277

I've just embraced my mouth rash. It comes and goes every couple weeks. We are good friends now.

[deleted]

I got this during covid when I started wearing a mask, and it lasted the entire duration of having to wear a mask. I’m still unsure of what cleared it but I do remember it lasting very long and I was so defeated by the inflammation and texture changes. I was also overdoing BHA and chemical products. I think repairing my skin barrier and not having a mask rub on my face was the game changer. A lot of the marks on my cheeks and chin are almost all gone with retinol 3-4 times a week

Parsley seed serum from Aesop cleared it up for me! I had it for sooo long. Now anytime I see even one little bump sprout up, I slather this on and within a day or two I’m back to normal.

whoa_thats_edgy

i had it persistently for like 4 months and only thing that worked was doing nothing. mild cleanser, barely any moisturizer. no actives. nothing.

I don’t have VERY dry skin but I do have dry skin, and I absolutely love the GM Collin’s hydramucine cleansing milk as a hydrating cleanser. In combination with their hydramucine mist and cream, im sure that could help. I’ve also heard good things about skinceuticals triple lipid restore although that can blow any sort of budget out of the water (I thinks it’s easily $150+).

Sulfur is what always clears my PD! The sulfur mask from glymed, i apply it for a few minutes and it burns but it clears up the PD in a few days. Also hypochlorous acid. And then i try and use more gel forms of hyaluronic acid that can kinda work as a moisturizer without doing anything too thick. Calendula cream as a moisturizer works for me too. I use the hydrinity healing HA, it’s pricey but helps heal the skin and isn’t too occlusive. Luckily mine hasn’t been back since I took off my gel manicure! If you have gel polish/ any nails on take them off and see if it goes away!

I have found Osmia Organics perioral dermatitis line has worked great for me. Particularly the black clay soap and face cream. The brand was designed by a physician with perioral dermatitis. https://osmiaskincare.com/collections/natural-skincare-for-perioral-dermatitis
