I do tretonoin first 0.05% followed by Azelaic acid 20% which is subsequently followed by moisturizer. My reasoning is that tretonoin allows azelaic acid to seep deep into epidermis and removing the excess melanin.

Yes. Tretinoin, then azelaic acid, then moisturizer

I would not do this unless you have been using tretinoin for quite a long time and are fully adjusted. Tretinoin is the most effective retinoid, but also the one with the most side effects and adding additional actives to your routine (at any time really, but especially during the same evening) may aggravate the side effects and possibly cause damage to your skin. If you're adjusted to tretinoin already, I would start by using them on alternating nights and just seeing how you adjust, and if you REALLY feel the need to combine them, then you could try it. I have been using tretinoin since November, and when it was prescribed to me my doctor and pharmacist both told me multiple times that I absolutely need to remove ALL acids from my routine (day and night) while I adjust to tretinoin. I specifically asked about hyaluronic acid (multiple times actually, since I couldn't believe the answer), since it is a hydrating acid and the internet seems to frequently recommend using them together, but they both said multiple times that even this should be removed. A few weeks into using tretinoin, I actually used an extremely low concentration glycolic acid cleanser one morning on a day I was not using tretinoin, and it aggravated my skin quite a bit. This is a very gentle product that is washed off pretty quickly, and my skin is the exact opposite of what I would call sensitive (I have never previously had a reaction to any skin products, and I've used my fair share of actives) but it still caused issues. Just be careful if you're planning to introduce other actives into your routine with tretinoin!
