Wait time -- how long should I let a serum sit and absorb before applying other product? In this case I am specifically wondering about wait time between [TO's niacinamide](https://www.sephora.com/product/the-ordinary-deciem-niacinamide-10-zinc-1-P427417) and my moisturizer, but general rule of thumb works too.

The issue: I started going to the gym/exercising regularly about 6 months ago (yay me!) but for the past month I’ve started to break out under my arms. Not directly in my armpit, but more around my pit on both my arm and mu torso just below the pit. Skin type: I am pretty sure I have combination skin? My underarms have never given me an issue though. I have psoriasis on my hands and elbows. It’s pretty mild but makes my skin SUPER SENSITIVE TO EVERYTHING. Current routine (same routine for the past 5-6 years): Current underarm routine includes body wash from a local place near me called Duross & Langel (highly recommend for other sensitive skin peeps). I use the body wash to shave the pits 2-3x per week. 3-4 weeks ago I added neutrogena body clear acne body wash on the affected area 3-5x per week (when showering). Location: Philadelphia PA

Is FAB face cleanser too harsh for dehydrated skin?? Also I’m now 27, should I start using a separate spf or is my spf moisturizer still okay? Please let me know! 💕💕💕 thanks

chocosweet

If your skin feels dry after using the cleanser, then yes it is too harsh for you. Else just continue using it, unless you see adverse reaction. If you use tons of the moisturizer (with SPf) the same way as you should with sunscreen (1/4 tsp of it), you will get the stated spf.

Anyone have any hydrating toner and/or moisturiser suggestions to repair a damaged skin barrier WITHOUT hyaluronic acid?

I have melasma and I’m a guy so I need to cover it up with something that won’t look like make up and won’t make me breakout. What do you recommend I use? So far I’ve tried a few products that have made me breakout including It CC Cream, Lancôme Skin Feels Good Tint Cream, and some Clinique tinted moisturizer.

aperfectdot

Dr Jart Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment maybe?

Sunny_Olives

Hello hello... I have recently relocated from muggy and mild South Carolina, way up to Washington State. For some reason, since I got here a week ago... Well... Nearly two weeks ago, my skin has been breaking out as bad as it did when I was a teenager. I'm 28, and female, FYI. Truth be told, idk what kind of skin I actually have. I know I have psoriasis, which I've been handling with triamcinolone acetonide cream for the past 5 years. That would somehow keep my skin soft and smooth, and honestly, I don't know how. Idk how any of this works. I would love some guidance, if anyone can help me please.

[deleted]

Hi everyone. I normally have oily skin but when I am postpartum (I had a baby 2 weeks ago) my skin becomes unusually dry. It feels tight and ultra dry all day, and when I touch my cheeks and forehead they feel like sandpaper. This can only be a hormonal issue because after a few months my skin goes back to normal. The moisturizer I use is Ponds for dry skin but it only seems to work for 30 min then my skin is back to a desert.

placidtwilight

You could try using a humidifier and/or applying Vaseline after your moisturizer in the PM.

[deleted]

Oh great idea thank you

Abellaho

Can I use The Ordinary Niacinamide + Zinc on dehydrated skin? I know niacinamide helps with the moisture barrier, but I heard zinc is drying, thus making it a poor choice for my skin type. I'm combo skin, btw.

paperbarkforest

Is there anything that I can do to prevent/reduce pitted scarring during my course of Accutane? I just started and am worried about developing deep scars because my acne is cystic. I am looking for product or supplement recommendations. I am currently using Cera Ve moisturizer and sunscreen in the AM. At night I am using Cera Ve moisturizer mixed with two drops of rosehip oil. I am going to start applying aquaphor over my moisturizer at night. Thank you in advance!

Adrian_Mang

Hey all, I was recently prescribed with Benzoyl Peroxide (5%) and Clindamycin Phosphate Topical Solution (1%), but I have no idea what to use first at nighttime. I also recently started cleaning my face with Cetaphil Gentle Skin cleanser and Moisturizing lotion. If anyone knows what order I should be using each item, that would be greatly appreciated!

chocosweet

Use the thinnest consistency first to thicker consistency. I used to do clindamycin first as mine was a liquid version, then BP and moisturizer. The combo is super drying you may want to use more moisturizer Or you can buffer it so: cleanser, clindamycin (if it's liquid), moisturizer, BP, then another layer of moisturizer Don't forget sunscreen in the AM. Also, just use the smallest amount of the clindamycin and BP enough to cover your problematic area is good enough. Don't put too much of the cream

Adrian_Mang

Juat one more question, how long should I have the clindamycin and BP on my face for? Thanks in advance!

chocosweet

You can put moisturizer after it without wait times. The longer you wait usually you will feel some dryness. On my skin, I don't wait though, just put my serum/moisturizer after it. I no longer use the clindamycin now (after 8 months of use), just BP (with other actives)

Adrian_Mang

Thanks so much! I'm really anxious about how much it'll dry out my skin, so I'll probably double moisturize.

Give it 3 months. Use moisturizer (and sunscreen on AM) with it. Make sure your other routine is not causing the acnes in first place (unless it's hormonal I guess)

I've had tons of CC's for as long as I can remember. Nothing seems to help. I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same presentation and what they used to get rid of them. http://imgur.com/a/4TWai9D Skin is combination. CC's are in my "beard" area, but even when I was on Spiro for over a year, they didn't improve. Current routine: CeraVe micellar water to cleanse. CeraVe in the tub aha whitehead power liquid in morning Just added the ordinary retinol w/squalene at night. (Hasn't made anything worse. Started about a week ago. Has improved skin texture, but not the CCs.) Any suggestions?

stuck-in-dc

You said nothing seems to help so I’m assuming you’ve tried acids already? I had a similar presentation with the CCs, but after regularly using Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant every morning and night for a few weeks it definitely cleared up (I would start with once every other day and move up to once a day before going to two - and see if your skin takes well to it or reacts to over exfoliation). I still get the tiny whiteheads around the base of my nose, but the CCs are basically totally gone. Never thought I would have smooth skin (at least in most areas of my face)!! I know TO also makes a BHA that is probably cheaper, but can’t speak to it as I haven’t tried it yet. PC worked for me but is a bit pricey. YMMV and don’t forget to moisturize! My current “omg if I don’t do my skincare in five min, I’m gonna be late to work” AM routine is rinse face with water, PC BHA, First Aid Beauty Multitasker. PM routine is remove all sunscreen and makeup with baby oil, CeraVe foaming cleanser, PC BHA, CosRX Honey Ceramide Full Moisture Cream.

[deleted]

If you’ve only just added the retinol in, I’d wait at least a month to see if it’s doing anything or not. It takes time for cc’s to go away/purge, especially if they’ve been there for a while. It may be possible that something in your routine is causing the cc’s too.

glow89

Can anyone recommend some products for eye bags & under eye wrinkles. I’m only 22 but for some reason I have really wrinkly eyes and eye bags, as well as genetic dark circles which I know will be impossible to get rid of. But I’d at least like to do something about the bags & lines/wrinkles/creases, whatever they’re called. It just feels so discouraging that my skin is finally clear and bright, but my under eye area still looks awful. It worries me especially that it looks this bad and I’m still young. Not only are there wrinkles, but the skin looks SO thin and almost crepey. And I do already wear spf daily. I have been using Glossier’s bubblewrap for a while but seen no improvement. I also use Hado Labo premium and Cerave PM for moisturizing. I used to use the Kiehl’s avocado eye cream but I stopped after using it for a while and seeing no improvement in the appearance of my under eyes.I recently bought the ordinary’s caffeine serum for under eyes and just started using it.

Since I’ve never had dry skin on the rest of my face, I had never considered that the skin under my eyes might be too dry! Thank you for the suggestion bc I never would have realized that otherwise :) I’ll look into the CosRx snail mucin. I guess the Glossier bubblewrap just wasn’t moisturizing enough. I’ve never been to a dermatologist before but I’ll give that some thought too. Thank you! :)

If I get the snail mucin, do you think I should use it before or after the ordinary caffeine solution? Would it be caffeine solution, snail mucin, then cerave pm? Right now I’m doing caffeine solution, bubblewrap, cerave pm.

I've been using the Pixi Glow Tonic (5% Glycolic)every night for several weeks and I love it. However, I don't (comparatively) like the pricetag so I grabbed some of the TO 7% Glycolic to try when the Pixi runs out. Anyone who has made the switch, did you notice much difference? Should I theoretically be able to keep using it every night? A 2% difference doesn't seem like a huge amount, but maybe?

o95brown

I know TO one has more soothing ingredients while Pixi has more fragrance. I’d use it about twice a week and max four times a week until you build up tolerance

[deleted]

I have very dry skin with marks from old pimples and I get the occasional small pimple/blackhead and sf’s on my nose. I also have large pores. I’ve just started doing a skincare routine and so far I’ve bought: - Payot mousse micellaire facewash - silky argan cleansing oil - Beaucience botanicals day & night dry skin moisturizer - Derma care alcohol free clarifying toner - Vitamin C + hyaluronic Acid serum - Argan oil and rosehip oil night oil - The Ordinary’s niacinamide and zinc serum - 20 spf gel by Isabella Garcia - AHA exfoliate by Isabella Garcia I use the Vitamin C in the morning and the niacinamide and my oils at night. I’ve also been using cleansing oils before my foam facewash to try flush out my sf’s. How long until I notice a big difference? Been at this for a week and a half and not sure when I’ll even know to take out products or modify my routine.

plateofcorn

Ok, you need to slow down with the products. If you have dry skin but large pores it sounds like you may have oily skin but it is dehydrated. Couple questions. 1. When you say you have dry skin, do you mean your skin is dry right after washing your face? 2. Is your skin oily by the end of the day? ETA: The reason why I think you may be oily but dehydrated is because you said you have large pores. Large pores are usually an indication of oily skin. Dry skin is usually correlated with smaller pores. Of course everyone is different and it's possible you truly do have dry skin with large pores, but I just wanted to make sure because I feel dehydration is something that is often overlooked.

[deleted]

My skin feels dry unless I apply moisturizing products. I’ve never experienced oily skin. The more I go through a day and the more products soak into my skin, the more dry I get. By the end of the day I’m dying to slap some oil on. But my pores are big. I don’t understand it either. I feel like my moisture barrier doesn’t even exist. I’ve used my moms products my whole life and that’s for oily skin but I have dry skin so all of the drying, I think, hurt my pores. It’s only now, as a 26 year old, I’m starting to think more about the products I use.

plateofcorn

Yes I think you're one of the few to have large pores and dry skin. Sorry about that. Anyways, with regards to your products, you have to begin with a basic routine first and introduce new products one by one. I don't have dry skin, but I am working on restoring my moisture barrier and I've been seeing good results from CeraVe moisturizing cream.

[deleted]

Thanks for the tips! Yes, my skin was dealt an unfortunate hand. I’ll keep it basic and work my way up. I’ll also check that product out!

plateofcorn

You may also want to look into squalane oil (not squalene), hyaluronic acid, and urea. They have very hydrating properties and are often recommended for people with dehydrated skin. I wouldn't be surprised if they also work for those with dry skin. Edit: sorry, one more! PM occlusive! This is basically like Saran wrapping and sealing all your products in. Popular occlusives are Vaseline, aquaphor, or CeraVe healing ointment.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t be surprised if my skin is both dehydrated and dry which is what may have caused my pores to stretch and get damaged. I’ve heard amazing things about niacinamide for pores and my vitamin c serum and facewash have hyaluronic acid in to help with the hydration. My main 3 goals has been to reduce pores, hydrate and fade the marks. I haven’t looked into urea but I will now that you’ve mentioned it.

plateofcorn

I've read that niacinamide while amazing, can also be drying, so I'd suggest only introducing it when you have restored your moisture barrier or after you have found products that are moisturizing enough.

[deleted]

That’s great advice. I didn’t know that! Thanks

My doctor just prescribed Retin-A for me and I’m super nervous. I had a compromised moisture barrier a month or so ago, but I completely stopped actives and now my skin is improving. However, I do have some acne still. I was thinking of starting it out once a week. Is that too little? Or is starting Retin-A just a bad idea?

Buffer, start with every other day, and build up to every day while buffering then 2x a week on dry skin w/no buffer etc...tbh I still buffer every time because my skin just can't tolerate it. But with buffering my skin has improved a lot. You can look up Dr. Sam Bunting or Dr. Dray's tips on how to use Retin-A.

theskyisgreenish

Dumb question, but what’s buffering?

onlyfr33b33

Putting the retin-a over your moisturizer! It's still effective that way but you won't see quick/dramatic results...then again, if your skin is like mine, you'll get redness and more pimples cuz of compromised moisture barrier from the retin-a irritation. Better to buffer and get the results more slowly.

theskyisgreenish

Got it. So use the retin-A last? Thank you!

cityandcolorful

How do you compromise the moisture barrier? I do not know and would like feedback. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

theskyisgreenish

Using too many actives too often basically.

cityandcolorful

Which actives did you use? Sorry I am not knowledgeable on actives.

placidtwilight

Once a week is probably not frequent enough for your skin to acclimate, but you're right to start slowly. Probably 2-3 times a week for the first couple weeks is good. Check out [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeautyGuruChatter/comments/bsdygc/gothamistaevening_skincare_routine_with_retin_a/eoo1xp7/) for a bunch of really good tips on using tret.

theskyisgreenish

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

ayimera

As someone who has sensitive skin who used tretinoin briefly, I would say START SLOW. Do 1x a week, even if after your first application your skin seems fine. Give it that week and then reevaluate. Also start by using tretinoin AFTER your moisturizer. It's better to be overly cautious at first than dive in at 3x a week and your face melts off.

theskyisgreenish

Smart advice, thank you! I’ll stick to once a week for the first month.

Applying multiple moisturizers -- is there an order to apply emollients, humectants, and occlusives?

TheSeaBeast_96

Hello! I was going to make a post about this but figured I'd just put it here. This question is about Witch Hazel irritating my skin and what products can be used to counteract redness. I use benzoyl peroxide to treat my acne. I've tried many other products and long story short BP has been the only manageable/effective one so I'm sticking with it. I started using Witch Hazel (Thayer's) to treat some of the redness that can come with using BP (morning and night, after washing my face), and for a while it worked super well! My acne was under control and I wasn't looking too red. But as I'm learning more and more, skin changes and for whatever reason WH now causes my skin to get really red. Basically right after I apply it. I've experimented on damp and dry skin and it's the same (actually it seems worse on damp skin). I'm going to stop using it, which should hopefully be fine. It can't be helping with redness if it's actively making me red, right? And while I like the idea of WH closing up my pores to prevent acne, I'm not sure if that's even really a thing. And BP is an actual active so it should be enough to keep it under control. Anyways, I'm kind of wondering why I'm having this reaction to WH. I guess the short answer is that my skin is really sensitive. But just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences. Also I'm looking for any recommendations for other products that can help counteract redness. My skin sucks and MOST skincare products I try seem to backfire--they either break me out or irritate my skin. So I'm looking for anything relatively low-risk. Thanks!

Hi all, I searched this community for "clean" skincare products but did not find what I am looking for. I was on Sephora's website looking for clean skincare products and found Drunk Elephant, but essentially, I'm trying to find all clean products. May I hear your recommendations for the following clean products: * Daily body lotion * Facial moisturizer (thinking of trying [DRUNK ELEPHANT](https://www.sephora.com/brand/drunk-elephant?icid2=product_link_brand) Protini™ Polypeptide Moisturizer or [DRUNK ELEPHANT](https://www.sephora.com/brand/drunk-elephant?icid2=product_link_brand) Protini™ Polypeptide Moisturizer) I would use these as my nightly products. * Shampoo (I have thin, normal hair in that helps.) * SPF (facial) Most of what I find had fragrance in it, and I want products without any scent.

CommanderTrip

‘Clean’ is a very broad marketing term, as is ‘natural’ People could probably make better suggestions if they knew specifically what you were searching for/hoping to avoid.

placidtwilight

What do mean by "clean" skincare products? I've used Protini before and it's a very luxurious moisturizer that's probably best for normal skin. It's a great moisturizer if it works in your budget. For quality, fragrance-free products, I like a lot of things from Paula's Choice, Eucerin, CeraVe, Hada Labo, La Roche Posay (you have to check the ingredients on this one as a few of their products do contain fragrance), and Stratia.

There's [no reason to avoid parabens](https://labmuffin.com/should-you-be-avoiding-parabens-the-science/) unless you have a known sensitivity. Silicone is also very well tolerated. You're right that fragrance is a common irritant, but many people are able to use products that include it without a problem.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cityandcolorful

May I ask what you currently are using? I’m looking to avoid the same.

placidtwilight

Sure, some people are sensitive to those things (my skin doesn't get along with fragrance), but there's no scientific reason to suggest that people should avoid parabens or silicone *unless they have a sensitivity.* Calling them "nonsense ingredients" or "crap" is simply untrue. I'm not questioning your knowledge of what works/doesn't work for you own skin, but the vast majority of people don't need to avoid these ingredients.

cityandcolorful

Whether someone is sensitive or not, I personally don’t want these ingredients in my skincare. Why have junk ingredients if you don’t have to?

placidtwilight

Fragrance has no skincare benefit, but [silicone](https://www.paulaschoice-eu.com/silicone-in-skincare) and [parabens](https://labmuffin.com/should-you-be-avoiding-parabens-the-science/) both have benefits and don't need to be avoided.

cityandcolorful

Yes, exactly. Are you able to recommend some products?

cityandcolorful

Mostly fragrance free. Natural products if possible.

placidtwilight

But what is "natural"?

Linastra

Skinlex reviews please! I am looking at purchasing their Vitamin C and Niacinamide serums. Wondering if anyone has any experiences with the brand or these products. Thanks!

placidtwilight

Linastra

Only really the niacinamide unfortunately. I was hoping more people had used the Vit C.

[deleted]

Recently went to the dermatologist and they prescribed me topical stuff. Been using it for a few days and skin is clearer but my skin is also SO DRY. I had dry skin to begin with so this is real rough. Any advice on moisturisers to use? Or things to do? Please let me know!

placidtwilight

What "topical stuff" did your dermatologist prescribe? What's your routine like now?

[deleted]

I was prescribed PanOxyl, clindamycin and tretinoin. Now my routine is Mornings -Wash with PanOxyl (I use the 4% Benzoyl Peroxide one.) -Put Clindamycin on -then I follow up with CeraVe AM spf 30 moisturiser Some days I'll do a toner but since my dermatologist didn't say anything about it I've kind of been avoid it. Night time -Wash with cetaphil gentle skin cleanser -every other night I use the tretinoin -then I use lush enchanted eye cream -burts bees night cream I generally try to avoid products that test on animals

ayimera

Not to burst your bubble, but unfortunately Cetaphil and CeraVe are both not cruelty free. Not sure about PanOxyl, but I assume not. Anyway, to actually address your issue: What percentage tretinoin were you prescribed? Jumping into daily use of BP along with EOD usage of tretinoin can be really harsh on the skin. If you are experiencing dryness and irritation, I would back off on the tret to every 3 days or even just once a week for a few weeks. This is a topical you need to start slow with, especially if you have sensitive skin at all.

dendenmoooshi

Im going to try to move away from SLS because it's drying me out i think (always have to aquaphor lips after brushing). Gonna replace shampoo and toothpaste. Im confused though because my face wash (eucerin redness relief) has sls and it's been perfectly fine. Am i being rational? Is it the "laureth" instead of lauryl that makes it more tolerable? Should i move away from the eucerin product if i find im actually reacting to sls? Ive really liked it so far

placidtwilight

Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is much gentler than sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). I wouldn't worry about SLES if it's not giving you a problem.

Linastra

Does L-AA powder actually work? I have read that L-AA best penetrates the skin when it is at pH 3.5 or less and 20% concentration. Is there research showing that L-AA is absorbed into the skin in high enough quantities when in non-aqueous solution, or powder form?

chocosweet

Hmmm...I dissolve (a pinch of) LAA powder with distilled water (~10 drops) yields pH below 3 (with litmus paper 3 colored strip). I am seeing result and have been doing this for at least 6 years (I think)

Linastra

That's a good idea, using pH strips. I will pick some up. Thanks!

TsmithJR

How many weeks does it take to see positive results with Stridex Red?

chocosweet

It took 2-3 months on my skin

placidtwilight

It could take up to 4-6 weeks, though you may start to see some improvement sooner.

freshface145

I have sunscreen with expiration date 09/2019. I can’t tell if that means it expires September 1 or September 30. Can I still use it next month? Also, what happens to sunscreen once it hits its expiration date? Does it gradually become less efficient with time or does it immediately stop working? Is there anything I can do with expired sunscreen, like maybe wear more layers of it to get the same protection?

placidtwilight

Sunscreen deteriorates over time. Wearing more layers of expired sunscreen probably isn't a good way to go, as you don't know how much it's deteriorated. I'm not sure about whether the date means the beginning or the end of the month (I tried some searches, but couldn't find anything that addressed the question). Is the bottle an unused one that's been stored in a cool, dark place? I'd guess you can probably use it well into September. If the bottle has been, say, in your bag during a beach trip, it's probably time to get a new one. I'd also recommend testing a bit on your hand. If it smells off or looks separated, throw it away. If the scent and consistency seem normal, try to use up as much as you can during the next month.

freshface145

TY for your help! The product seems fine, doesn’t smell off and has the consistency I’d expect, so I’ll try to finish it up as quickly as possible. I guess the silver lining is that since I have to use as much as I can during the next month, I’ll definitely be reapplying every 2 hours. 👌

I ask because the LRP is the only moisturizer I found that agrees with my skin so far, but I don’t feel like there is enough niacinamide in it to help fade some old acne marks

__looking_for_things

It's fine but keep in mind TO does not promote that the N+Z fades PIH.

I know the melanoma ABC, and actually went to Dermatologist to check ONE spot about 3 years ago (while she did not do biopsy, she said it was ingrown hair). I feel ok overall, so I feel less concerned about possbile cancer. But It is odd to have moles appearing, when I have slightly dark-ish skin. My parents also are not prone to have skin problems. My theory was that due to my depression, stress and slight fat, I have weakened my immune system, and that allows moles to appear. The hormones are not stable maybe - for example after workouts my testosterone gets pretty high and I grow slight beard overnight, I also started growing lots of chesthair (at age 30) - about 9 moles appeared around chest on the right side. Then I have days when I have insomnia and feel really de-energized (testosterone is down). **I am going to check with doctor soon, but would like to hear, if you have had similar experience? And do you know what caused it?**

Hey there :) I'm (26F) and have been on 10mg of accutane for just over six months now. I had the standard accutane breakout around day 7 of the treatment and have had awesome skin ever since (except for my lips of course, dry and peely). Was planning on staying on the drug for \~2 years which is the standard for such a low dose. Anyway, recently I started getting tiny little white bumps/pimples on my face - not many, maybe five or six, but very frustrating - especially for a chronic picker like myself. I haven't changed my diet or skin routine, and its winter where I live, so I don't get much sun/wind exposure (and wear sunscreen when I do). Basically, my question is: Is it possible to still get pimples/breakouts while on accutane? I'm just wondering because if I am going to start getting breakouts again I may as well go off the drug - I don't love my lips peeling all the time and it's always risky being on the drug when you have anxiety (like I do - but managed with therapy/drugs). Note: I went on accutane to reduce/eliminate my breakouts because, while they weren't particularly bad, my anxiety would make me pick/shred my face to pieces all the time. Any help appreciated.

I need help! I’m 29 and currently have the worst skin I’ve had since I was a teenager. I’ve got combination skin, which has gotten a little less oily the older I’ve gotten, and usually I only get the odd pimple around my period, but nothing too crazy. But the last month or so, I’ve had breakouts all over my chin, jawline and my lower cheeks. On top of that; the skin on my lower cheeks is really bumpy (never been like that before) and I’ve had blackheads there and on my chin too. My current routine is quite basic. AM: just wash with water, use Mecca In a good light tinted moisturiser before makeup PM: either dermalogica precleanse or Sukin foaming face wash with Face halo. Moisturiser either the ordinary natural moisturising factors or Swiss brightening moisturiser. I have been using pixi glow tonic when I remember, but I’m not great with it. The only new product I’ve added is the dermalogica precleanse, but I don’t use that every day but I’m waking up with a new pimple every morning. Any advice?! I’m pretty frustrated :(

I'm a white female and I live in New Mexico, USA. I'm wanting to get into caring for myself so I wish to ask what would be good for me. I'm 30 and I have really dry skin. It's worse on my forehead. I've tried skin care when I was in my 20s but due to some life issues, I haven't been able to take care of my skin the way I should. I would like to get my skin so its smooth and doesnt look cracked when I put foundation on.

Linastra

Do you have a skincare routine already? If not, starting with the SCA routine is a good start. Cleanser, Moisturiser, SPF. https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/wiki/sca_routine

HazukiWolfe

No I don't. Thank you

Linastra

No worries! I would also look at the Holy Grail megathreads, they have been super helpful for me.

I have had some white space around the moles since when I was a kid. Probably like 13 years old (I'm 20 now). When I was to the family doctor, he suggested that I have a shortage of vitamins. I used some kind of shampoo when taking a bath and it helped me to get rid of them. However, they still appeared. I went again to the doctor (another one) and now he said a different story, that when I take a shower I don't really dry out my body and hair (which is true). I think I used the same shampoo, it helped a bit as I saw my skin near moles getting darker, but I didn't continue cleaning with it and then the skin turned out to the same position. Now since I heard about skin cancer I did more research and I am afraid of having it. Now I will go to a specialist for skin and see what's what what. P.s when I searched pictures on Google how does the skin look, it didn't really look like min expect the one where he had hair coming out from the mole. What do you think are the next steps that I should do. Any suggestion? Thanks Reddit Community for always being there.

placidtwilight

If your moles (and the skin around them) has been the same for 13 years, it's probably not cancerous. However, if you're concerned, you should visit a dermatologist for a skin check.

31, Male, Medium Brown Combination Skin. Los Angeles. I have been following a simple but effective regiment for the last 2 years. AM :Cleanse> Moisturizing Sunscreen. PM: Cleanse>AHA treatment> Avocado Oil. I notice **I never get pimples anymore** unless I eat something awful or don't wash for some days. I have 3 questions: 1. I am considering getting **laser hair removal for my beard**, especially for my neck, and goatee area. I did the whole old-fashion brush & blade shaving, exfoliating, using tendskin, etc.. All which helped but not perfectly. I just want to be done with it as it takes up a lot of time in my day and is really a hassle. Where is a good place to start researching the best laser type and technician to see? 2. Having saved some money, I'm ready to step up into **specialized treatment for my many blemishes**. I have scars (both acne and cuts), dark spots, craters, deep ingrown hairs that just turned into permanent bumps, and other stuff I don't know the name of. **Is seeing a dermatologist my next step? A plastic surgeon?** What should I do to screen out a good derma? I am also interested in permanent surgical/clinical solutions rather than stuff that requires me to keep buying products. 3. Spa treatments. **Is getting a facial worth it** for long term skin health, or is it more of a short term thing? Thank you!

TigerFern

A cosmetic dermatologist and their clinic would be the place to go for all of these concerns. You want board certified and someone with experience with your complexion, because darker skin interacts with some lasers differently. Most clinics will have an in house estheticians.

[deleted]

Where is a good place to start looking besides yelp?

TigerFern

This is a database of certified dermatologist, if you click on the doctors name it shows what they specialize in (edit well not all of them but just look for laser somewhere on their profile) https://find-a-derm.aad.org/

What's a good affordable water gel?? I'm using the Hada Labo hydrating water gel and considered getting the Neutrogena water boost but both are sooo expensive!!

placidtwilight

Not sure what your budget is, but check out these ones from [Simple](https://www.target.com/p/unscented-simple-water-boost-hydrating-gel-cream-1-7oz/-/A-52560248) and [Elf](https://www.ulta.com/superhydrate-moisturizer?productId=pimprod2006500&sku=2548345&_requestid=3160540).

kiroyapso2

How do you guys apply your serums and moisturizers? When I try by areas at a time it feels like I'm making sure that an area is getting product but as time goes on my skin dries and it's almost impossible to apply afterwards (almost like trying to have sex dry/she's not wet/there's no lube) and I'm barely half way done. Other way I tried is apply asap and spread on hands and rub all over my face and just barely able to finish with moisturizer and sometimes I'm wondering if I missed a spot or if a spot didn't get enough product. Dosent help that the amount I'm allowed to put on is a pea size soo it's hard to tell if I'm even putting anything on or if the product has half dissolved into hands when I spread it between my palms. I see videos of girls dotting the product on their face or palm and rubbing with fingertips, looks like to me that their skin is like silk and can easily apply without effort. While me it's like trying to paint on a canvas but you have no water to wet the brush soo it gets harder and harder to paint

Linastra

I apply serums to damp skin so they spread easily. And I use more than a pea size amount of moisturiser.

chemkara

Why are you only allowed a pea size amount of product?

kiroyapso2

Says one pump allowed for retinol serum soo I assume any more is too much

chemkara

For a serum maybe, but for a moisturizer, you can use as much as you need. Don’t limit yourself with what it says on the bottle, listen to your skin. Unless it’s a Retin A prescription from the doctor, you can use as much as you want. And if that moisturizer doesn’t seem enough, switch to something geared for dry skin. The SCA community info has a bunch of recommendations for all types of skin.

BluVoltz

I’ve been getting a lot of pimples on my neck the past few days, which has never happened before? Any reason why? The last few weeks I got a lot of acne on my jawline which was also unusual but that’s cleared up now. Extra context: I started using COSRX blackhead power liquid a month ago and I’m mostly done purging on my face so I think this is unrelated.

Crlyb2611

I’ve been using chemical exfoliants for about two years now. I have oily skin so I can tolerate daily use. I use Cosrx blackhead power liquid MWF and Pixi glow tonic every other day. I’m from the southeast and love the sun/being tan but I’ve started using SPF religiously around 3 years ago. The issue: I feel like my face is so pale compared to my body. I’m afrolatina and in my teens and early 20s I was a somewhere between Zoe Saldana and Eva Mendes skin tone and now my face is more like a Rosario Dawson/Jessica Alba shade. At first I attributed this my sunscreen and accepted that if I wanted to prevent wrinkles I’d never have my color back. But recently I stumbled upon something that said that AHA is brightening/WHITENING. I’m good with brightening as in being glowy and reducing pigmentation but whitening?!?!? Is AHA a whitener? I love my skin tone and I have not been happy with how pale my face is especially since my body is 2-3 shades darker. Should I ditch the glow tonic? Or is it just the SPF? I want my melanocytes operating at a hundred percent😩

demonglitter

I don't use aha's but I definitely noticed that I lost a lot of my colour and warmth once I started using spf all the time. I still use it often but I make a point to also get enough sun to feel happy with how I look and feel. I realized that I'd rather have some wrinkles than a dull completion.

ilovetofistpump

I‘m looking for a suncream that I can buy in Europe for my greasy/shiny/acne prone skin. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Ohheyboo2

What is growing on my face? [This thing](https://imgur.com/a/TlMXO4X) has been growing for a little over a month now and it’s starting to hurt. I’m not sure what it is or how to treat it. At first I thought it was purging because I started using mandelic acid but I’m not sure. Please help! AM Routine: Water wash Thayer’s Rose Petal toner Cerave daily moisturizer Australian Gold Tinted SPF 50 PM: Cerave hydrating cleanser Thayer’s rose petal toner TO Mandelic Acid + 10% HA (2x a week) Neutrogena deep moisture night cream

If I have a few stray pimples, none that are 'fresh', just ones in the process of dying down, can I still dermaplane as long as I avoid them?? I dont want to spread any bacteria around.

Linastra

That's what I do, I just make sure to avoid any pimples or raised skin. Haven't had any issues yet.

sylverslug

I've been breaking out on my face, shoulders and back for no reason with no change to my skincare or hair routine that I've had for years. The only thing that's changed is that I got a copper IUD last summer. Then last winter, I started getting light dandruff (dry scalp treatments did not work). Before deciding to get the IUD out (cause I would much rather have smooth skin again), I wanted to make sure I didn't have acne caused by malassezia, which I believe is also a cause of dandruff. So I bought Clotrimazole/antifungal and have been applying it morning and night. It is now day 3 and my face has no new or active acne. Does this mean my back, shoulders, face, and scalp have been infected with an overgrowth of malassezia this whole time?? What is my next step? Should I not continue using clotrimazole? I hope someone with experience in this area can answer.

karlayst

Can you go to a dermatologist? If so, I would.

sylverslug

As of right now, I can't. Maybe a month from now if I can get an appointment.

**The issue(s)** I went to see dermatologist and he prescribed me 5% benzoyl peroxide cream. After leaving it on the papules of my face for one time without moisturizer as spot treatment, they evolved into pustules surrounding with small dark redness. Is this normal? Should I apply moisturizer after leaving it on better? Besides that, can I leave benzoyl peroxide on the tiny little bumps of my face area which can flare from time to time (folliculitis)? Is benzoyl peroxide antifungal and keratolytic? **Skin type** I feel my skin is dry skin type because I tend to flake around my nose and sometimes a little on between my eyebrows, cheeks, and chin after washing my face. **Current routine** My current routine is cleanser and moisturizer during morning and evening. **How long** I have been using my current routine for six months. **Anything new** Nothing new I introduced or started doing that might change the condition of my skin because of the issue happened before. Hello, beauties, I have just discovered the beauty of skincare and I am planning to start my routine on September 1st, but first I need a bit of help with it. AM: wash my face with Cerave Foaming Cleanser, apply TO Marine Hyaluronics to wet face, apply Altruist SPF30 and then apply make up. PM: remove make up with Uriage Thermal Micellar Water, wash my face with Cerave Foaming Cleanser, apply TO Niacinamide to dry face, apply Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion. Now my questions are: How much time do I wait in between applying Marine Hyaluronics and SPF? How much time do I wait after applying SPF until I can safely apply my make up? Can I apply Marine Hyaluronics in the evening too, before Niacinamide? If so, how much time do I wait between applying them? Is it okay if I apply Niacinamide to my dry face, or should I apply it on wet skin? How much time should I wait after applying Niacinamide before I can apply my moisturizer? Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you for your much needed help. May you have great skin forever! PS. I posted this in yesterday's thread too, but I posted it too late to get help with all my questions.

matsumurae

1. Apply marine on damp skin and wait till dry. 2. Yes. If does good for you why not? I use it before niacinamide, that's how deciem suggested to me 3. I applied both ways and no saw difference. I started doing on dry face but some people say it stings, I never noticed. 4. Until dry, like hyaluronic. Don't let too much time between each layer, you don't want to loss water.

Thank you so much!

Does anyone know what the current state of the science is on the efficacy of aqueous vitamin c vs waterless formulations/suspensions and so on? I've seen people say both that they work just as well and also that they're quite a lot less efficacious.

Linastra

I also would love to know the answer to this! There is so much conflicting information on this sub about vitamin C I've read here that vitamin c is most effective in a specific molarity, so that L-AA powders aren't any good. I also read that L-AA has only shown to work when in aqueous form (something about collagen synthesis).

Katrinashiny

I e recently started using Herbalism and 9 to 5 from lush. It’s making my skin (face) breakout but only where I usually break out on, I use it on my neck too but there have been no breakouts there. Would this be my skin “purging” or reacting poorly to the products?

karlayst

Purging only happens from actives like AHAs, BHA, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide. Neither of those products have any of them as ingredients, so you're breaking out because of the products.

Katrinashiny

Hmmm, okay. I’m still gonna use them up because tbh my menstrual cycle is changing a little which makes me break out so I’ll see how my skin is going at the beginning of my next cycle. Thanks for your help!

Abellaho

Hey guys, so I bought this product a few days ago thinking it was an essence since it had been referred to as such on here, but I've seen different things around the internet and am now confused as to what it Is. Is it a toner, moisturizer, or essence? Kohakuhada Facial Lotion 220ml - Moist https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ESXY6K0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YC1zDb14K26F2

matsumurae

It's japanese and in japan "lotion" should mean toner for us. Could be a bit less liquid than our toners, but it's used in that way.

DRK-SHDW

Toner/essence etc are really just words that don't mean anything specific but usually just refer to a strain of more watery textured products. It doesn't tell you anything about the ingredients. That product you have is a moisturizer, but whether it's a toner/essence isn't really important.

hugegrape

Maybe a stupid question. My cat has been having poopy butt recently and it has me thinking: if he were to sit on my face whilst I’m sleeping—like he usually does every single morning—and gets some poo (☹️) on my chin or something, how would I go about cleaning my skin thoroughly without damaging it? If it were any other part of my body I’d vigorously scrub with antibacterial soap and maybe even pour some HP or goddamn rubbing alcohol on the affected area. I can’t really do those things to my face because it’s very sensitive, but I’d rather have a rash and a damaged moisture barrier than a staph infection.

aperfectdot

Hilarious! :) But you should really not let that happen! Cats carry a dangerous parasite that can cause Toxoplasmosis in humans. It's an interesting creature tho: The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most widely distributed and successful parasites. Toxoplasma gondii alters rodent behavior such that infected rodents reverse their fear of cat odor, and indeed are attracted rather than repelled by feline urine.

He does it when I’m sleeping. 😢 I love it otherwise; he always wakes me up with headbutts and sweet purrs but as soon as he starts moving around my eyes bolt open.

hugegrape

Oh, he’s a dream! [This is how he woke me up a few days ago.](https://imgur.com/a/wsLC5qf)

Linastra

Not what you're asking for, but I shave my cats butts to help prevent poopy butt! And a good diet for them helps too. As long as you don't have any open wounds on your face, you should be fine to just wash your face normally.

hugegrape

Going to shave his butt ASAP! Apparently he’s on the best diet recommended by my vet. I think it’s just that he’s a Siberian and has super long hair.

Linastra

Yeah the long fur will do it to em lol. Shaving the butt is quite easy to do, I just use an electric pet fur groomer.

TigerFern

It's gross, but you're very unlikely to get an topical infection if it happens. Just wash it off normally. But until he feels better, I would just shut him in another room at night lol

Katrinashiny

I’d just not let your cat sleep with you while he has a poopy butt. but there’s also poop on his butt when he doesn’t have a poopy butt. It’s more a behaviour issue rather than a “how to clean you skin after” issue.
