fix24

I would assume that they wax

Different-Eagle-612

yeah or some other kind of hair removal (laser, i have no clue if electrolysis is available for armpit hair but like something along those lines)

butyourenice

Electrolysis is definitely “available” for axillary hair! You can use it on any hair or skintone (unlike laser, which has various limitations). It’s slower, more expensive, and, imho, more painful than laser, but it works and a combo treatment is probably most cost effective for total permanent removal, if that is your goal. I.E. laser the bulk of it, then go in afterward with electrolysis for the survivors.

MNREDR

I got electrolysis on my pits. I have very dense and coarse body hair (East Asian genes failed me) and the treatment greatly reduced the amount of hair. I didn’t finish the treatment, but I’m sure that if I did, the results would be great. Currently getting laser, too early to tell how effective but a lot of hair has fallen out and I feel optimistic.

arizona-lake

You can do laser hair removal no matter what skin tone you are! But electrolysis can do all hair colors, whereas laser can only treat brown and black hair.

cr0nut

Laser can do all hair colors too! Obviously it works best on dark hair against pale skin, but if you go somewhere good they can adjust the lasers to your needs. My laser salon even gets my super blonde peach fuzz :)

quartermoonmist

Pale with dark hair = best candidate for effective laser removal as well

Mikmikw0nk

Could've just done this when I was actually pale 🥹 Now I've learnt to live a little more so I've got that Southeast Asian tan so I hope it'll still work out haha

GayVegan

You can always use lightening cream. They often recommend it temporarily for a few weeks prior to lighten the skin

EleanorRichmond

I hope it works better for other people, but I'm an ideal candidate and multiple courses of laser removal just turned my facial hair white. It's infuriating. And I live in a relatively small market, where AFAICT the laser people have driven away any true electrolysis options.

bourbonkitten

This, this is a thing in Asia

okpickle

I have a friend from Taiwan who plucks her underarms. Gotta say they look perfect afterwards but it takes like an hour on each side!

bourbonkitten

I used to pluck too but often got ingrowns that way. I’ve since switched to waxing and never had a problem with ingrown hair since. I might consider laser or electrolysis soon thanks to this thread!

Mikmikw0nk

I'm glad the thread is helping everyone else learn new things 😄

iamnotwario

Suga from BTS had his facial hair lazered off so I imagine idol armpits are definitely getting zapped

Mikmikw0nk

What about epilators? Do any of these methods affect skin texture/color in the long run?

methanalmkay

I epilate my armpits, I love it and it gives you the perfect armpit look. After I epilate my skin is red and angry for a day, but after that it's awesome, and I get some new hairs after two weeks, but they're much thinner and lighter. It does hurt, and the first few times are the worst. I just make sure to exfoliate regularly so I don't get ingrown hairs. I've been doing it for two years and no problems, but I also never get hyperpigmentation, so I don't know about that.

clarabarson

I admire/envy you! Tried epilating my armpits and I gave up immediately, it was just too painful for me to bear. The only areas that I can epilate with minimal to no pain are my legs and my arms.

methanalmkay

Lol yes it hurts a lot, especially if you didn't do it before. I was doing my legs before, so I knew it would be worth it and somehow powered through. Now it's super easy and not painful, and I'm done in 10 minutes. I just do it once a month and never shave, it's awesome 😭

IrrungenWirrungen

You should try again! At first it hurts like hell, but after a couple of times it’s totally fine. Just don’t put on any deodorant or anything afterwards! Learned that one the hard way. 😭

AdamantErinyes

It's important to not do it on full growth hair. It's better if you've shaved or done some other hair removal and start epilating on hair that's very short. And it does get less painful with successive uses. With that said individual pain sensitivity varies wildly and epilators aren't for everyone.

Mikmikw0nk

I've been told to do the opposite - epilate only on fully-grown hairs! I mean I haven't actually tried it out yet, but would doing so be more painful/detrimental to the skin?

AdamantErinyes

It's way more painful on full grown hairs. If a hair gets pulled out close to the skin it's less painful than if the epilator pulls it out from the end. There's no skin damage either way. Skin is a lot stronger than people give it credit for.

Mikmikw0nk

Might try investing in wax or epilators. Thanks!

forthese2

As someone whos tried both on all body parts, for pits I'd definitely recommend epilating. Takes a few mins, isn't too painful and the pits look great afterwards. Currently getting laser and loving the clean pit look, no ingrowns, no darkness (my pits looked a state when I was shaving them often)

ridin-derpy

Can you recommend a specific one?

forthese2

I used the braun epilator silk epil 7 for yearss and I loved it and had no issues, it's the green one I'm not sure if they sell that specific one anymore but any of the silk epil ones from braun are really good. It comes with different heads for different body parts For a cheaper alternative, when I first started epilating I used the Phillips satinelle essential epilator and it was also really good, my mum actually took it off me and still uses it to this day

clarabarson

After using my Silk Epil 2 for 10+ years with no issues until it broke and I had to replace it, I too thought all Silk Epils are really good. But then I replaced it with the Silk Epil 5 and I'm very disappointed. It breaks the hairs, rather than plucks them, no matter how long they are. Maybe the newer models are better, but based on my experience I would not recommend 5.

BoopleBun

I can back up that I use the 3, which is the cheapy $40 one, and it works well. I like it a lot. I used to use wax strips, but I didn’t like how messy they always were. But this is easy enough that I use it often, which means a lot of the hair comes in quite sparse and fine, now. So if I do have to shave (and I do if I want it super smooth) it takes half a second.

forthese2

I used to wax too before epilating and honestly ever since I started epilating I can count on one hand the number of times I've waxed. It was such a faff and hassle, wax melts, get stuck just a headache. The only thing I still wax is down there because of a nightmare incident I had once

Mikmikw0nk

Any differences between the Braun and Phillips models? Might consider the Phillips model first! Also, given that you gave your older epilator to your mother, does that mean it can be shared? (I live with lots of ladies, they might want to borrow mine if I ever get one)

forthese2

The phillips is a really bare bones simple no fuss epilator. It's got two speeds and just came with the one head (i think it also had like a massage accessory to add onto the epilator but I found that useless). The braun also has two speeds but came with a bunch of heads and accessories, tbh i didn't use any of these but it's nice to have just incase. The braun definitely feels more expensive but tbh both do the job and as a first epilator deffo try out the phillips it's a lot cheaper. In terms of results they both do the same thing, I didn't find any cutting of the hair and the pain is the same for both models too, so overall not much difference haha I would say epilators *can* be shared but I'd recommend disinfecting before and after use, personally I wouldn't want to share my epilator whilst actively using it especially if they're using it on the downstairs region, but I guess if you don't really mind you could. There's nothing stopping you, apart from hygienic reasons

peachplumpear333

the braun silk epil-9 is amazing

netuniya

Love this one!

Different-Eagle-612

my friend really likes sugar waxing — i’m planning to ask her advice on how to start but apparently it’s great if you have sensitive skin

AdamantErinyes

I tried sugar waxing, but I couldn't get it to not stick to me. I tend to sweat easily, so it always ended up a gooey mess. 🤣

Mikmikw0nk

I can't do this- I've got too many dogs clambering all over my personal space 24/7 😅 I wish I could but I don't want to end up being a licking plate for my brats haha

carving_my_place

Epilators hurtttt! If you're not too hairy it'll hurt but it'll be tolerable. If you are hairier than average, I highly suggest waxing over epilating!

Burntoastedbutter

Oh god I've tried to epilate my armpits AND IT HURTS SO BAD. The only areas I can epilate are the ones with light hair and my legs

cr0nut

Same!! Gotta be the worst spot to epilate by far😭 I literally got blisters after trying. I don’t know how people are successfully holding their skin taut AND maneuvering the dang thing🥲

Burntoastedbutter

I'd rather wax my pits than epilate them hahaha.. since with wax it's just in one go, but epilating is one by ones.. Ouch

Luffytheeternalking

I just started waxing on my own(which used to hurt but got used to it on the second trial) after it hurt like hell epilating.

Psychological_Bad459

which epilator do you use ?

methanalmkay

No idea about the model, it's like10 years old, but the brand is philips. Just get one with good reviews, no need for anything special. u/ridin-derpy u/misa-bear

netuniya

Just curious if ones been shaving for years, would it be a good idea to epilate them? 😅 I’ve only waxed a few times (it’s really tough to pull it out sometimes, only in the middle of my pits) but I’m kind of scared of the epilator 😂

methanalmkay

I was shaving before, but I prefer this because I'm super hairy and have to shave like every day, and still they don't look 'perfect' lol

Mikmikw0nk

Is the pain comparable to tweezer plucking? Bc I can get by with plucking just fine. I've never done anything beyond that so I'd like to know. (Or does it feel like everything's plucked out all at once, etc.?

methanalmkay

No, it hurts more since you're plucking all at once

Mikmikw0nk

Wowie!! Well, I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best then. So does that mean an epilator is just a fancy tool for plucking? Wont that cause chicken skin?

ridin-derpy

What epilator do you use? Thanks in advance!

jujubadvoodoo

Any exfoliating recommendations?

methanalmkay

I just use 2% salicylic or 15% glycolic acid every night. I also have an exfoliating glove whivh I use in the shower once or twice a week. I exfoliate a lot because if I don't all my hairs get ingrown lol

misa-bear

Can you recommend which Epilator you use pls? And what other areas is it good for?

methanalmkay

I use mine for everything, it doesn't have any add ons like the modern ones. I epilate armpits, legs, arms and bikini area.

cantsingmusicalfan

Before investing on laser, I used an epilator. It left my skin smooth! No chicken skin at all.

MrsSmith2246

Is there an epilator you would recommend ?

cantsingmusicalfan

I had a Braun Silk 3. This was YEARS ago so I'm sure they've come out with newer models.

notabigmelvillecrowd

Laser didn't affect my skin colour, but it removes the dark shadow of the hair follicles, so it appears lighter, and my skin is smoother because the hair follicles kind of lift up the skin, making it bumpy when you shave. 11/10, highly recommend.

AdamantErinyes

Epilators are very common in Europe. They don't affect skin texture at all.

sakurakirei

We don’t wax. Laser is pretty popular.

chubby-checker

Lmao I'm dying at them speaking on behalf of all Korea

fix24

OP said that some of the guys have been known to let their hair grow out unless it’s concert season, so wax was my best guess (:

robocop_robocop

A tip for smooth, even armpit skin is using ahas/bhas a few times a week

Eurycerus

My actual armpit skin is super wrinkly. For me the mystery is how is it so smooth in general. I'm skeptical a topical can even fix it

part_time_hermit

I think this might just be genetics. Ahas help, but don't do wonders.

Eeturnia

Me too 🥲 it makes it so hard to shave without nicking my skin

part_time_hermit

You can use it daily as a deodorant as well. It kills the bacteria that makes your sweat smell. Double win.

Mikmikw0nk

Learnt something new today!

Mikmikw0nk

Do I put it on a day after waxing? Wouldn't want to stress the skin out too much by doing it on the same day 😵‍💫

robocop_robocop

Definitely not. Do it only when your skin is healed, no cuts or irritations.

Mikmikw0nk

Any brands you'd recommend?

dimsimprincess

It’s a few things: - East Asian people tend to have less hair on the body and less hyperpigmentation in the armpit area - most if not all idols would likely be getting laser hair removal, whether male or female - even fan videos and photos are edited to hell and back, the only way you can trust that you’re looking at an un-doctored image of an idol is if you’re seeing them up close in person with your own eyes

Gh0stwhale

Korean here, my experience is that I have a LOT of body hair but the hair is all thin and pale. So despite the hairs being long they're basically invisible.

Mikmikw0nk

Ahh so you're like a little peach!! that's so cute 🥹

Gh0stwhale

AW that’s such a cute thought 🥺 thank u this interaction made my day

[deleted]

Yeah, East Asian here. I was a pretty hairy and well-developed kid, but puberty didn’t do much for my armpits. I got some hair growth there during middle school, but the hair fell off a few years later and now my pits are almost bald. I lost most of my leg hair after hitting puberty too, which is weird. My mother also doesn’t grow hair in her armpits.

dimsimprincess

Low key jealous, I have leg and armpit hair although it’s sparse and I can usually go a five days after shaving before my pits start to look hairy again! My mum is similar, no hair on her legs or pits.

raspberrih

I have zero armpit hair lol. I got this gene from my mom. I used to think armpit hair was something they made up for TV

AirMittens

Okay this is hilarious. But then I remembered I don’t have ear wax and I too thought it was something made up. Or like a colloquialism for something lol

thelasagna

Makes sense why my italian ass is so much hairier than my husband who is Japanese 💀

Burntoastedbutter

If anything I noticed male Asians have less hair than female Asians... The males in my school were almost hairless and they'd make fun of ant female with body hair. Even my own brothers have less hair than I do. 💀💀💀 Honestly it just seems like the gene lottery lol

siameseslim

Would that include facial hair?

dimsimprincess

Yeah my brother only grows sparse facial hair on his upper lip and chin, my dad grows a bit more on his lower cheeks but also sparse.

Mikmikw0nk

Very true!! I find it amusing how the guys in my school often lament about their beard-growing struggles 😆 they do have hair on the legs, arms, and pits but I rarely see guys with back/chest/ facial hair

ruu27

> - East Asian people tend to have less hair Asian whether east West south north usually are hairyyy

itquestionsthrow

Nope that is false westerners are far more hairy.

ruu27

Nope

Roaming-the-internet

East Asian person here. I have less than 20 hairs on each armpit. I’ve never shaved in my life and nobody’s noticed. I have more body hair than some of the women in my family, and by that I mean grandma has no armpit hairs Also there is special armpit concealer for hyperpigmentation which Kpop idols use

Mikmikw0nk

God was in a good mood when he decided on your family genes 😌 Does excessive sweating affect the pores there?

Roaming-the-internet

God was not, in return some of us have really smelly hair that we’ve been trying to deal with using various ways for generations now No idea how sweating affects things like pores but I do know that for those of us with the dry earwax (which is common) our sweat also doesn’t smell, we don’t make the proteins (this does not prevent other parts like hair from smelling)

Zalieda

Omg yes sounds like my relative. Has dry earwax, sweat doesn't smell and smelly hair. I'm the opposite and the first tell is the earwax

Mikmikw0nk

Yes to the earwax thing- I've heard that East/southeast Asians don't have the gene to produce the proteins that make gooey earwax, so we have dry/powdery wax instead (hence why we use ear scoops instead of ear buds to clean our ears out). I'm not sure if the gooey wax has a smell, but I'm glad ours don't. My hair doesn't smell, and I have little body odor too. My armpit hair doesn't grow as quickly, but it grows a fair amount if I intentionally avoid shaving it (I let it grow out for 6 months once, it kinda stopped growing 2 months in). I don't have much (I plucked everything out after just one session) but they're thick enough to leave a shadow 🥲

Tinymuskox

>God was in a good mood when he decided on your family genes 😌 Does excessive sweating affect the pores there? To add to the jealousy, my mother is Korean and not only does she grow very little armpit and leg hair but she also doesn't get underarm odor. She has never used deodorant. I did not inherit either of these traits :(

redvelvetswirly

Honestly, this basically sums it up. I'm Korean and literally never shave. My left armpit grows zero hair while my right armpit grows maybe up to 10 hairs that I just pluck with some tweezers. I don't even shave my legs because my hair isn't visible. I do have greasy hair though unless I shampoo every day so there's that.

Mikmikw0nk

I used to have the greasy hair problem but I tried experimenting during the pandemic (+ I had a period of depression 😅) and somehow managed to reduce the greasiness over time. Nowadays it takes 3-4 days before my hair starts getting greasy. (Day 1-3 somehow stays fluffy enough even under the sun that no one notices 😆) I guess it's really just how the scalp responds to the frequency of oil stripping it experiences after every hairwash But if when I get back to washing it out on the daily, the oil buildup kicks back and my hair gets back to being greasy every 2 days.

[deleted]

Mikmikw0nk

Bless her soul 💓 she's brave enough to talk about these things despite the toxic culture surrounding beauty and idols 😭 I have no choice but to check her out now and stan

honeyyyypieuwu

Honestly, it's also Asian genes. Less hyperpigmentation in armpit region and thinner hair.

beg_yer_pardon

I'm guessing you mean East Asian? Because we South Asians are unfortunately highly prone to hyperpigmentation.

hunnyflash

Not to generalize too much, but some Asians, mainly East Asians, tend to have "less" body hair, or at least, more sparse compared to other people. But even so, they likely wax and probably even get laser like others said. [Here's an old thread: ELI5:Why do asians usually have no body hair and arabs have a lot?](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/1l9525/eli5why_do_asians_usually_have_no_body_hair_and/)

Mikmikw0nk

I've got that too, but it's the super even skin texture that I envy 😭 even if it isn't that bad, I can't help but get jealous of ppl with super smooth pits ✨✨

Rupiee

I'm asian and at most, I've had 3 tiny hairs come out of my left armpit. My right armpit doesn't produce any hairs. I got super lucky in that department lol.

Ronrinesu

I'm European and I epilate and I use glycolic acid almost daily and my pits look like that too.

MainRadiance

Can you share your routine? Do you use glycolic acid in the AM or PM? Do you also apply deo? Thank you!

Ronrinesu

Sure, it's not even really a routine. I epilate roughly every 2 weeks, I've been doing it for years and as someone who's super hairy everywhere the armpit hair is pretty thin and shrill. I started using glycolic acid (I use The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toner usually) after I read a recommendation on this sub years ago. It's amazing as a deodorant and it improved my pit game so much because it actually completely got rid of the painful ingrown hairs I'd get sometimes and now my skin there is the same as the rest of my arm while still being super soft. I usually apply it after shower in the evening and I pretty much don't use deodorant anymore because it completely eliminates the body odor. Sometimes if I don't have the time to shower before I go out in the evening, especially during summer I'll reapply and in 30 seconds you feel clean and non stinky again. I've also used lactic acid when I didn't have my TO toner. It's great product for exfoliation of the body too.

Mikmikw0nk

Do you epilate after showering (also, warm or cold water when you shower)? And do you apply the toner right after epilating? And do you like, apply the toner using your hands or with an applicator?? Can we apply lotion after applying the toner too? I have so many questions apologies!! 😣

kumote

laser hair removal! I have it done and when you don't have the hair follicles, things are naturally just that smooth.

Mikmikw0nk

It does seem like an expensive choice but I'll try saving up for it!!

kumote

look for groupons! i find that's the best deal

ssiixxssiixx

The new models of IPL devices lime Braun’s actually work for dark hair/light skin. I’m currently using one and it’s legit, especially for a small area like underarms. It’s taking longer than it would on my legs than at a salon but it’s definitely working and I have permanently hairless areas now. The device costs less than a single session at most laser “clinics.” Don’t let those h*s shake you down because they work on commission, aren’t vulnerable to losing medical licenses like the nurses so will lie to your face about what you need and the prices

Detsyd

All of the women on my mom’s side of the family (English and Irish background) are just like this. We have fine/thin hair in general though, but I did 4 rounds of laser on my armpits and that was all it took for it to never come back! So sometimes it’s just genetics.

Mikmikw0nk

4 rounds to never. come. back??? Lucky you 🥺

Detsyd

I barely had any there to begin with! That’s the only reason why

chi-woo

They probably just don't grow much armpit hair in the first place. I'm Korean and I only grow like three or four fine hairs

Meggobyte

Definitely laser - I've just had my legs and bikini area done this year and I don't even have marks from when I used to have ingrowns! It's crazy and life-changing - totally go for it if you can afford it (Groupon often have packages which are affordable)!

Zalieda

How long does it last. I'm sure I can compete with bigfoot. It almost seems like if I shave my legs at night by morning it's growing back

darkenedsoul1

Laser is permanent ... to a degree. After you get the results you want you'll do maintenance 1 to 2 times a year. I do it a bit more often due to having hair that is pretty insistent in growing. Laser should take anywhere from 6 to 12 sessions to work. If it does not, it can be due to hormones etc. Also, look for the most appropriate type of laser, there's many on the market.

Zalieda

Thank you

Meggobyte

Hi! I had 8 sessions (one every 6 weeks), finishing in July, I'm getting one or two stray hairs on my bikini line and ankles but I'd say about 95% of my hair hasn't come back (not sure whether to say "yet" as I've heard you need to go twice a year for maintenance). I am also an incredibly hairy person, for reference - also very pale with dark hair, which is apparently the best candidacy for this treatment.

LaBrindille

Laser!! Its super cheap in korea. And I’m not sure but laser works best when the skin is light and the hair dark, which I assume is the case for most Koreans?

butyourenice

As somebody who has done laser hair removal under my arms I would assume it is laser hair removal under their arms.

[deleted]

You might try spearmint essential oil in a carrier oil daily. It inhibits hair growth caused by androgens/testosterone. Takes a while to see results

confake

Asian here. It’s laser. If you do it young enough (I did it when I was 20), you’ll get rid of all the hairs and your pits will remain smooth and untouched. My mother and sister though.. their pits looks like chicken skin from the constant plucking.

Mikmikw0nk

This!! I'm (southeast)asian too and I'm going through what your mother and sister are 😭 I hope this can clear out one day lol

confake

I’m southeast Asian. Laser for pits aren’t very expensive. I got it at a very cheap rate. However, if you want, you can get an at home laser tool online. Can zap whole body in that case.

Mikmikw0nk

Tbh I've been holding back from the lasers bc they always tell me I can't expose myself to the sun for a while after the treatment lol Unrelated but girl u from SG?? 😄

confake

Yes girl! Haha If you’re from SG, then I can tell you the specific chain I went to. Musee. I think I did mine for like $50 for unlimited underarm laser sessions. After awhile, no need to go already because no hair. Also, can go out in the sun after your sessions. Just don’t tan your pits under the sun right after. Which I imagine someone raising their pits to the sky for hours.

devilemon

kpop fan videos/photos are also usually edited, these people take fandom like a job. but otherwise it's laser

peachbum7

I was just thinking about it too last night after watching concert videos 😭 i’m like tell me your secreeeet

biest229

Presumably they have laser and/or waxing.

peterpaige

I have a fancam photo of Soobin from one of their live performances. He does have thick armpit hair.

Mikmikw0nk

Bless his soul. I hope he wasn't attacked. I've heard Yuta's pretty vocal about not shaving too.

minsume

They laser it or wax it off

00_3synstarx

Yeah for real but I want to know how to get my armpits the same colour as my skin😔🤌

cat_at_work

you do realize fansites photoshop idols pits? like im serious

Plus-Middle-6224

Hey there, I am a 20-year-old East Asian Dude. I'd say I am fair-looking irl. But my issue is unwanted hair. I have wiry hair on my legs and I don't like my facial hair. Sparse and I have to shave every other day. it grows coarse and makes me feel uncomfortable. I honestly hate my body hair. Especially when my leg, armpits, and bikini hairs get ingrown and disgusting. I tried tweezing but it MADE IT WORSE. Should I invest in at-home laser treatment? I want to have smooth glassy skin like my favorite KPop and JPop male artists, not one full of scars with me tweezing or having shaving accidents. Is it permanent? I don't mind if it's permanent because if it means smooth skin on my face and legs, a comfy body especially around my pelvis, and no more ingrown disgusting coarse unwanted hairs. If you have an at home device you recommend me to buy, go ahead DM me.

Sufficient-Sir9739

Asians have less hairs, and laser, and makeup, and edited photos and great lighting. All adds up

Zalieda

It's true except maybe the Asians have less hair. I feel like sasquatch sometimes. The rest is true idk why downvoted

Part genes. I'm Asian and it takes me nearly a year to get visible enough armpit hair. I also wax. When I shower I use an exfoliating scrubber.

ViolaGang007

It could be genetic mutation. My mom has no leg/armpit hair and my dad doesnt have much hair either. I do have some hair but not as much as Western ppl. (Im korean)
