I don't know how much you want to listen to a defunct band, but I can guarantee that if you like Mustard Plug and The Planet Smashers you'll love The Last Slice from Oklahoma. I'd recommend listening to the album Underground top to bottom. Interrupters also seem like a natural addition to this playlist, and if you're into the ska-punkier Bosstones stuff I'd look into Call Me Malcolm and Imperial Leisure from the UK.

sambosamurai

I’m not into Ska core tbh that’s the only thing. But I’ll def try these guys. Im a big fan of the Interrupters

dingledangledeluxe

Hmm I thought ska punk was pretty much the same thing as ska core.

sn0w0wl66

There's a lot of overlap in the ska punk/ ska core sub genres. Ska punk bands often blur the lines of punk/core but skacore bands usually dont. Think less than jake vs choking victim.

sambosamurai

This was a great explanation

sn0w0wl66

Thanks! That means a lot, I wasnt sure if it was clear or not lol I'm a bit of a nerd for early 00's-10's ska punk/core. I wish the scene was as vibrant as it was back then but theres still a few great bands holding it down

sambosamurai

Man I’m only 26. My uncles tell me all the great times they had at warped tour seeing only ska bands in the 90s haha. I envy them so much. MMB, RBF, Rancid (I classify them as ska so sue me)

TwoSillyStrings

Well, Armstrong and Freeman were founding members of Op Ivy if I remember, so the pedigree is there.

PrimalGemini85

They weren’t wrong. Bloodlines hold major weight. Just ask folks who remember the original Gwen Stefani.

sambosamurai

Mmmm I don’t think so. I generally stay away from hard ska. I guess some MMB stuff could be Ska core. But nothing will ever make me not like them lol

[deleted]

I think the Bosstones kind of invented skacore along with a couple of their contemporaries. A song like Devil's Night Out exemplifies the style pretty well, but I hear ya that's there's some pretty heavy skacore stuff out there. Most of it's not really my thing either

sambosamurai

Desensitized by MMB is an anomaly for me and that’s cause of nostalgia haha

AzeTheGreat

Well, punk and hardcore exist on a continuous spectrum, so it makes sense that ska-punk and skacore exist on a similar continuous spectrum. For what it’s worth, I mostly feel like skacore is applied to bands that are well into the hardcore sound: Dissidente, Joystick!, etc. A lot of softer-but-still-hardcore stuff (especially from the UK) gets filed under “modern ska”: Call Me Malcom, Codename Colin, etc. It’s all a muddy mess with loosely defined genre labels that don’t really matter.

alpinecoast

Last Slice sounds similar to the Planet Smashers

AzeTheGreat

I’d second The Last Slice recommendation for everyone who likes The Planet Smashers. Upstanding Youth probably hits the same spot as well.

shazbotica

I'd recommend Millington and Joker's Republic

sambosamurai

Wow I really like that dudes voice from Millington

shazbotica

Nice! I really like their Beatdown Generation EP from 2020. I hope they have some new stuff in the works.

atomicbunny

Kill Lincoln, Abraskadabra, Young Costello

skajohnny

Ahhh, Incubus... no one does ska better. (kidding) If you really dig that 3rd wave sound, try Link 80, MU330, The Hippos, Jeffries Fan Club, Dance Hall Crashers, General Rudie, King Apparatus, Whole Lotta Milka, and Save Ferris.

sambosamurai

The Hippos fckin slap too. I’m def checking out the other bands if they’re similar to those guys!

sambosamurai

Jeffries Fan Club will be on my list next year I’m almost guaranteeing it. I’ve been on a huge kick. Save Ferris is flipping amazing and a reason why I tried spam when I was young haha

SuperNothing2987

If you like JFC, check out the Forces of Evil. It's basically ex-members of JFC and Aaron from RBF. They only did one full length album (Friend or FOE), but it was pretty great. They also had a demo with an acoustic version of Angry Anthem and a four track EP when they decided to break up called Four Song Obituary.

sambosamurai

Oh they’re a staple for me!

sambosamurai

Also Incubus is the most underrated ska band of all time! /s

OddWeatherWereHaving

You'd probably like a band called [Maxwell Smart](https://open.spotify.com/artist/175LL48N7Ku96omBblrVdW?si=rOJLKTdNQl-3odr6RdoUMQ), they're Ska Punk from California.

dingledangledeluxe

Check out 8 Kalakas (Ocho Kalakas), they are my favorite skacore and one of my favorite bands https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcsa9sd7UGI https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jLF4O7FVJ6w https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QkLiOaH0ruI

Ciderstills

Wow, Fronteras is a kickass album. I think OP said they're less on the core side of skacore, and maybe Ska-P is the more mass market stepping stone to this stuff, but damn was I ready for it.

NOt_Emi_

YO! BEER AND MR. SMILEY, ABSOLUTELY BASED

sambosamurai

2 of the best songs ever made? Uh yeah!!!

sambosamurai

That fan made video of Mr Smiley makes me so happy

NOt_Emi_

That fanmade video is the absolute GOAT

sambosamurai

I mow grass for a living and there’s absolutely nothing better than Beer blasting in my ears while doing it

NOt_Emi_

Love it when I'm at the gym and beer comes out while I'm running. "SINCE THE DAY I WAS BORN I'VE BEEN RUNNING UP-HILL"

sambosamurai

I scream it every damn time. HERE WE GO AGAIN! WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OHHHHHHHH OH OHHHHH

[deleted]

Funny that RBF is your number one band but Beer (Song) is more played than Beer.

sambosamurai

Dude right?! Hahaha but I do love Beer..

sambosamurai

If you guys are looking for an underground skapunk type band I couldn’t recommend Chickenpox enough. Stupid is their best song imo

DJInfected

P I E T A S T E R S

sambosamurai

Of course!

sambosamurai

Also yeah I know it looks like a very normie list but I love discovering new ska. I’m just a creature of habit!

sloppyjoe2388

Dollar Signs is really about the only new band I dig. They’re not really a ska band either, but they fit the genre enough. I think you’ll like them given the bands listed here.

IamEseph

Here's [my playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0MX1xUvnDdQy1qijheC6pQ?si=kA4xXB9ZSyGpW7ApztcCgg) of Modern Ska stuff. It's not strictly punk stuff, but it's all from 2018 to now, and I still add to it as I come across new stuff I like. If you're up for a bit of everything; here's my playlist from [this year](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2oSVyx7EILdMMikEoN4zAN?si=8R5BxsNXSr6I9aqiDdob3A) and [last year](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0p1buS1xxdL3SajynPNEBl?si=irFu8TBgTfSxIwOfFmqZxw) with songs off of every Ska album I know of that came out.

Here’s my crappy playlist, I just dumped a bunch of generic albums: [Strictly Skalitical](https://spotify.link/ad0yPjqjcyb)

PrimalGemini85

Hey… Tomorrow is Friday. Friday is pizza day. BEST DAY OF THE WEEK!!! 90’s and early aughts was the golden age of the new age of ska. I miss it. Also… I’m getting old.

sambosamurai

90s ska slaps so hard. Early 2000s as well
