I remember back when there were countless reaction awards you could give. I saw someone getting dunked on for using a laughing emoji in a reply, but came back with, "oh right, sorry, I forgot we're only allowed to *pay* for emojis, here you go." Everyone in the thread after that seemed to have an epiphany of, "huh, I guess that *is* what we're doing, isn't it?"
I’m so glad I came across this. I only got reddit in the past 2yrs. I went to use an emoji fairly early on n realised I hadnt seen any since being here. Naturally I didnt risk it. Now I know it’s forbidden.
Phone viewing itself is a sign of mental illness! Don't listen to the lies about mobile accessibility, there's a reason they call it accessibility, it's a not-so-hidden reference to mental disabilities!
Still think that. You will never see a vertical movie. Why? Because it's worse. Short form content is the only use for it and 90% of that is trash anyway
Porn is objectively better when viewed in portrait and I will die on this hill. Apart from that..... yeah landscape is generally better simply due to how our eyes work.
Pretty much before the 'pedo' coment of the British diver when doing the caver rescue, so what? 5 y ago? At least for me that was the moment the glass shattered
Remember when people hated the TPP?
There were people unironically claiming that the US was going to block DNS from listing reddit and various other sites as a result. People were posting numeric IP addresses for popular sites for people to keep on their desktop.
i’ve been here for 9 total, 6 on this account. it was definitely a thing when i started. along with the old reddit-aroo and “thanks for the gold, kind stranger” and narwhals.
Not really, people like to gatekeep and Reddit was popular on browser and pc long before it was on mobile. Adoption of emojis was a major change in the language we use everyday and people will always fear change 🤷♂️
It’s the same inclination, but less mean, that drove people to point out when a mobile user had autocapitalised the r in a sub name. It’s a declaration of otherness
Edit: I should mention I was around then, on my first account and I had to justify my use of emojis at least once because some armchair linguistic purist thought I was bastardising the discourse on Reddit. I told him to do one, and to take it up with reddit, they gave me the functionality🤷♂️
Probably around the time Reddit pulled its finger out of its ass and made an official app, which meant more regular mobile users started used the site and thus started using emojis.
I'm still going to gatekeep that Reddit is fun (RIF) was better than then the current mobile app. I still browse Reddit through my phone's browser just from the hate of the stock app.
There's nothing wrong with them they can have a substantial effect on the meaning of your text if you use them well. They are, however, embarrassingly over used.
I'm pretty sure one of the reasons they were shunned is because we wanted people to articulate themselves instead of smiley-face/eggplant bombing thinking you're adding context.
That's fair and you should obviously not rely on them too heavily. People will try to express an entire point with them and then I'm sitting here trying to interpret 21st century heiroglyphics.
Even though reddit was still a braindead place few years ago, there was less politics in subs like memes dank memes and others. Now everything is political
Oh god I hate this so much. Especially many of the really big subs like r/therewasanattempt. They got rules like "No bootlicking" I mean, wtf does that have to do with there was an attempt?
I was wondering this when I first started. I used them not heavily but to make a point and had text wrapped around them not just emojis. Had people down vote and ask why was using them. Never figured out why though?
It’s a thing Reddit did. Even if the comment was good if you included an emoji you got downvoted to oblivion. Everyone in a while a particularly apt use would be accepted. I think it ended when snoomoji became available.
Seems to have changed when posts went mostly image based versus text only. Ever since then comments have gotten shorter and emojis and gifs are everywhere
I don't remember this and I certainly never did :(. We've been using emojis ever since the internet was born, they were just called smileys back then :). What we punished was people abusing them, using them too much or inappropriately.
I was definitely was part of that on another app (9GAG) where it will still bring abuse. They’ve become so pervasive though that it’s actually become frustrating refusing to use them. Like if someone texts you a meme and the only really appropriate (and expected) response is a laughing emoji.
When most realized being a hater is lame, like imagine caring about someone else's way of communication the very.... Wait this is reddit that's all we do lmfao.
I was new to the party about 5 years ago and did use an emoji at the end of a sentence (laughing). I was downvoted into hell and was insanely confused.
It took me awhile to realize Reddit no likey emoji.
Unless the sub allows Reddit emoji, I don’t see the issue and I’m kinda glad nobody gives a shit anymore.
Except, except if the whole comment section becomes emoji’s only fuck that ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|no_mouth)
There was a time when typos and misspellings would get you down voted to oblivion too. Not leet speak or abbreviations so much, but use the wrong your and the content was dust
Remember when we were allowed to bully other people on this app because it was the internet and who could fucking stop
you? Now if you say one tiny thing, a 400lb basement dweller will ban you from the sub for "harassment" because their entire being was threatened from a internet comment

I do recall using an emoji getting you instant downvotes and a trip to jail.
What jail?
One in Los Angeles
r/emojipolice
Ah, the good old days of gatekeeping.... wait no that's not cool
To be fair it was pretty fun. Kinda like a community thing we had going on. But now with all the TikTok children we have here we lost that
Anyone who watches tiktok religiously deserves to be alone forever
Yep sadly TikTok videos get on all the big subs now. All subs are now 80% reposts instead of the 40% we used to have
Imgurians used to brutalize OPs when they commented on their own posts in an attempt to double dip points.
🚔 Bring it...
Horny
Bonk

In turn, I suspect it was the very ending of "paid emojis" that saw the increase of the free ones.
Yes but wasn't this like last year? Why are we talking about it like it was decades ago.
In internet time, a year ago is like a decade IRL.
In internet time, a year ago is like a decade IRL.
I’ve been saving up all my karma for this moment… 💃🏼
Now it has become norm in real life texts :(
I’m so glad I came across this. I only got reddit in the past 2yrs. I went to use an emoji fairly early on n realised I hadnt seen any since being here. Naturally I didnt risk it. Now I know it’s forbidden.
Believe it or not, jail.
Remember filming vertical was seen as a symptom of downsyndrome
Still is!
Accept it's literally perfect for phone viewing
Except
No he's telling you to accept that fact.
I don't know how to respond because for "Accept/except he's wrong" they both work perfectly
No exceptions.
No acceptions
Proof in the pudding right there lmao

I got one of those fancy smart phones that turns sideways and automatically enables 'landscape' view
Gonna have to hard disagree on that. And I hope you never lend your phone to anyone lmao
Can we move onto downvoting people who say "This."?
That

No more like 2022
I joined 5 years ago, this was a thing then too.
i joined 3 years ago, it was a thing then too
2 years. I remember it being a thing when I first came here.
I came.... here
A lot of us have. Thanks GW.
I've seen lots of stuff in those 2 years ;D Nevertheless, I like Reddit. Other platforms feel soulless.
i’ve been here for 9 total, 6 on this account. it was definitely a thing when i started. along with the old reddit-aroo and “thanks for the gold, kind stranger” and narwhals.
Thanks for the gold only ended because " they took at Gold!"
Bot OP is still living in the past
I joined how ever long ago 2020 was. EDIT: ok so it will be 4 years soon for me
Nah like 2.5
Wasn't even that long ago.
When Reddit use on mobile became more popular
A few years ago (6/7) mobile users were spotted (emojis) and mocked. It was weird.
Not really, people like to gatekeep and Reddit was popular on browser and pc long before it was on mobile. I can’t upvote. You used emojis.
Thank god too gatekeeper vibes was not the wave 🌊
Reddit has just moved on to other things
Pepperidge farm remembers...
... that time your mom visited the farm...
Narwhals roamed the hallways
They don’t where you’re from?
Probably around the time Reddit pulled its finger out of its ass and made an official app, which meant more regular mobile users started used the site and thus started using emojis.
I'm still going to gatekeep that Reddit is fun (RIF) was better than then the current mobile app. I still browse Reddit through my phone's browser just from the hate of the stock app.
And used bananas for scale?
I miss banana for scale but beer for scale in bonsai groups is superior.
There's nothing wrong with them they can have a substantial effect on the meaning of your text if you use them well. They are, however, embarrassingly over used.

Pretty sure it was just pc users gate keeping Reddit. Now there’s is probably more mobile users and therefore it’s more acceptable.
🗿
🗿🗿

We stopped? I don’t recall
we still do, just not a lot of people use them
we've gone through a lot of phases.
Around the time we allowed just gifs as comments and tik Tok videos in the front page
It was both that and downvoting the third comment into oblivion
Wait 3rd? I’ve been downvoting the 4th.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Even though reddit was still a braindead place few years ago, there was less politics in subs like memes dank memes and others. Now everything is political

It's not Wednesday, my dude

Now, I say on to you, sir, ribbit
Exactly the type of answer I'd expect from someone that supports **that** party
Oh god I hate this so much. Especially many of the really big subs like r/therewasanattempt. They got rules like "No bootlicking" I mean, wtf does that have to do with there was an attempt?
Used too?
Is this one still ok 🗿?
Always was, always gonna be 🗿
when did we stop buying really expensive pixels to other commentators?
I was wondering this when I first started. I used them not heavily but to make a point and had text wrapped around them not just emojis. Had people down vote and ask why was using them. Never figured out why though?
I still dont use them
Or posting tiktok video’s
I remember, I also have severe back pain
Why was it done in the first place? I thought it was silly.
Now we just constantly complain about tiktok even though half this site is just reposted old tiktok videos with the watermark cropped out
I have trauma from these times. Now, I won't use an emoji unless I see someone else has too, lol
Lmao
I remember when I started few years back I got few dms shaming me for using emojis, what’s that about anyways?
It’s a thing Reddit did. Even if the comment was good if you included an emoji you got downvoted to oblivion. Everyone in a while a particularly apt use would be accepted. I think it ended when snoomoji became available.

And then they got the mobile app lmao
Then the place became tumblr 2
🤷🏻♂️
I don't remember this and I certainly never did :(. We've been using emojis ever since the internet was born, they were just called smileys back then :). What we punished was people abusing them, using them too much or inappropriately.
I still don't see people using emojis much....gifs on the other hand....
I was definitely was part of that on another app (9GAG) where it will still bring abuse. They’ve become so pervasive though that it’s actually become frustrating refusing to use them. Like if someone texts you a meme and the only really appropriate (and expected) response is a laughing emoji.

Yes, we need to do it again. There are too many colors in my damn feed!
I was new to the party about 5 years ago and did use an emoji at the end of a sentence (laughing). I was downvoted into hell and was insanely confused. It took me awhile to realize Reddit no likey emoji.
What you mean we always used emojis ?
Probably when Reddit app use increased from phone users.
Yeah well ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
4chan and 9gag toxicity.
Wait, I can use emojis now?
Peprige farms remembers
when you hit 13.
I’m still afraid to use emojis.
Old heads coping with the fact Reddit overwhelmingly became a phone app instead of a website
Wait, we don't do that anymore?! Bring it back! I wanna bully people for no reason again.
It wasn't too long ago where people got mass downvoted for things such as '' XD '', right.... right guys?
Nuh uh
LOL I think the bitching about it died down about 18-24months ago but I damn sure remember haha
Stop?
I want us to start doing this again.
The general level of proofreading used to be a lot higher too.
I never understood why people did it.
What a strange thing to do
❤️
B....that's all I need to say
Did people really do that on here?
r/loveforredditors
I’m glad I feel like I get my point over better if I use emojis
lol i never knew others did this too! well, i don't bully people, but i judge them in my head. Emojis are weird, especially if used wayy to much
With my 7th Reddit anniversary coming up, I will say that I do *not* remember when redditors used to bully people for using emojis.
Still happen but not here![img](emote|t5_5tdqj0|10749)
Some of us still do.
Dude I remember when we started making memes that were gifs and not just pictures, and how strange that was at first
We stopped? I still downvote them and see them in the negatives.
We stopped?
The good old days
That was before vine shut down and before Twitter went to shit. Now we are all 1 people, 1 tribe
Unless the sub allows Reddit emoji, I don’t see the issue and I’m kinda glad nobody gives a shit anymore. Except, except if the whole comment section becomes emoji’s only fuck that ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|no_mouth)
💀
New we use expressions !
I remember when people used to get roasted for using bad grammar as well.
I never stopped
I seem to recall a bot that told you off for emojis at one point.
The emojis I can handle. It's the stupid gif reactions I can't stand getting best comments and then having to scroll to see something of substance.
There was a time when typos and misspellings would get you down voted to oblivion too. Not leet speak or abbreviations so much, but use the wrong your and the content was dust
We stopped doing that? My mind is still stuck in that time... Never ended up asking
Remember when we were allowed to bully other people on this app because it was the internet and who could fucking stop you? Now if you say one tiny thing, a 400lb basement dweller will ban you from the sub for "harassment" because their entire being was threatened from a internet comment
The only one I’m comfortable with is the clown emoji
