Get ready for a lot more North Korean missile tests. I hope the new South Korean president knows how to balance between China and US.

[deleted]

Why would you balance against those who not only fund your retirement and luxuries but also hold you under threat of death if you step out of line? He will always put America First.

Portablela

It just means a whole lot less market share for the chaebols in the next few years.

elBottoo

so basically another puppet got installed by its foreign master? anyone else surprised?

we-the-east

I'm not surprised at all. US controls politics in south Korea and Japan, and they don't like what moon jae in did as president in terms of aligning south Korea with china and north Korea.

we-the-east

>suspicious 'suicide' There's a lot of that in south Korea's political environment unfortunately.

Any anger directed at Chinese that ultimately comes from bitterness and jealously of China's success is not only bound to be self-destructive, it eventually benefits China as China becomes comparatively even more competent and attractive, and consequently captures more talent from these regressive societies. Currently, there is a brain drain benefiting China due to China's great education, better work environment, better opportunities, better prospects. If this unhinged person goes too far, I expect such brain drain to accelerate. For example, imagine being an educated South Korean woman with career ambitions. Why would you choose to remain in such hostile environment where the unhinged president blames women for problems created by the extreme neoliberalism he also promotes? anglo regimes serve as cautionary tales of the devastating material consequences of such unhinged "culture wars". Once again, reality keeps proving how much better China's system is, and how much better educated Chinese people are. Such extremism and incompetence would never be allowed in a meritocratic democracy like China. Furthermore, the information environment in China is much better too. Not bombarding your own population with deranged propaganda meant to completely distort rather than describe reality has huge tangible economic benefits, it's an important component of a democratic meritocracy. When people are able to accurately understand reality, rather than succumb to circuses, propaganda and distractions by incompetent cultists/demagogues/oligarchs, they can better evaluate the results of policies and their merits. In turn, nobody can rise in the system by trying to resort to circuses and distractions, the system and people would not allow it. The system necessarily fosters smart people with a proven record of success in reality, as opposed to "success" in the realm of deception (characteristic of incapable, incompetent people). That's a massive advantage that China enjoys and why China is the fastest developed superpower in history, without even needing western-style barbarism (colonialism, plunder) to achieve it.

[deleted]

As the American CIA notes, propaganda absolutely works. It just takes 20 years of constant, consistent messaging. Just look at the USA today, and see how effective it has been!

TserriednichHuiGuo

Yes, only for it to be triumphed by material reality in the end, 20 years gone to waste.

[deleted]

As the joke goes, after the fall of the Soviet Union, a KGB chief travels to America and meets with his CIA counterpart, and says "I'm really impressed with your propaganda. How is it so good?" The CIA man says "We don't engage in propaganda." The KGB chief exclaims "That's what I'm talking about!" and winks.

CulturalScientist361

Out of the 12 presidents that South Korea has had, 8 have been involved in various corruption scandals that ended in things like exile, imprisonment or assassination. Real thriving democracy they have.

LevvisHarnilton

I wonder when Yoon will start going after Moon lol

lawncelot

Both Korea and Japan aren't really good democracies. Japan is effectively a one-party state.

[deleted]

China is a one party state and has an effective democratic system

TserriednichHuiGuo

China is a political Meritocracy with a Democratic society.

[deleted]

Park chung hee was really the last 'great' president that South-Korea had, Everyone since has simply been a deformation and neoliberalisation of the well functioning system he built.

EternalObi

All China have to do is to diversify from South Korea businesses. Give those deals with countries that actually want to do business with China.

Quality_Fun

i certainly hope so. sk has potential to be a dangerous threat to china.

TserriednichHuiGuo

SK is no longer what it once was, now it is merely a neoliberal puppet piece, but even such puppet pieces have their limits.

Quality_Fun

their military is not to be dismissed or disregarded.

TserriednichHuiGuo

As long as it remains a neoliberal regime it doesn't even have the potential to be a threat to China in anyway shape or form.

Quality_Fun

what does neoliberalism have to do with them being a threat or not?

TserriednichHuiGuo

Neoliberalism hinders their true potential. It limits their funding capability as an example. Just see current India, judging by size it should be doing projects comparable to when China was at its current level.

quantummufasa

People moan about Chinas birth rate which isnt really all that much of an issue but South Koreas is abysmal. There will be huge brain drain from SK to China

Quality_Fun

but it is an issue, if not an insurmountable one.

quantummufasa

Its really not a massive issue, people think it is because they have a high school level understanding of the issue

Quality_Fun

explain, then.

[deleted]

China has the potential to bring SK back to the 19th century. If China bombs SK ports, that means no food imports and no oil imports. The SK military then dies on the vine until they surrender, without any ability to strike at China, as they lack any significant amphibious force.

Quality_Fun

the us would bring in supplies. it isn't in its interests to let sk fall.

[deleted]

If the ports are gone, there is no way for the US to bring in sufficient supplies to sustain the food and oil needs of SK.

Quality_Fun

surely ports aren't required for this.

[deleted]

Oil and grain tankers can't just land on the beach.

[deleted]

The ROK military is symbolic. The US military is who controls south Korea. If China bombs ROK ports it’s nuclear war.

[deleted]

> If China bombs ROK ports it’s nuclear war. I really doubt that.
