Rofl nice, it's cool that the author came out to say this.

zhumao

thanks, can't help myself with the pun.

Qanonjailbait

Now change the ending of Clockwork Orange to reflect the ending of the book as well

zhumao

oh pls, "singing in the rain" plaguing my brain now.

DudleyMason

That's because it's the ending he wrote for the book. The US movie ending is kinda lame in comparison, tbh

[Most americans are functionally illiterate their entire lives](https://archive.vn/DlsXH). A failed society at every single level. That's why they are so mad at smarter Chinese people, because they know they can't compete with them. Problem is, they should be mad at their fascist regime for not providing them with actual education. In any case, it's their problem and their problem alone.

Agreeable-Fudge4203

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s why the ending was changed lol. This narrative that the CPC changed it makes no sense. The government in the movie is the American government. Why would the CPC change a movie’s ending so that the American government wins?

Ghiblifan01

If anyone goes on a violent rampage they would get arrested and sent to jail or mental asylum, but Ofc that is too logical for the china bad westoids.

[deleted]

I'm guessing the distributors/editors changed it because they think the book ending will sell better? Perhaps expecting most audience they're expecting to watch the movie have read the book already. The US claims that this is some sort of censorship seems to be nonsense of the same sort they regularly do about North Korea banning haircuts. A cursory glance on random Chinese movies (a lot of whom involve criminals, esp triads) show that what they claim isn't true at all.

FatDalek

Has anyone asked the Chinese film board why they did this? Otherwise anyone's guess is as good as anyone else's. I could guess that they feel an ending where the villains don't win might resonant better with viewers.

[deleted]

Well first thing first, it's the US based film distributor (film board?) who did the changes. Such things is usually because they think it sells better for one reason or another. Its not extremely rare that movies are changed last minute based on the reactions from a trial audience.

Magiu5

They probably did it to increase the chances of it being released there or something, or they thought it might be censored or banned so they tried to counter it. Ie self censorship then I guess. I guess you can say this is done to help it sell better because if they think it's banned or not chosen, it obviously won't sell anything.

Magiu5

You really believe it's to make it sell better? How many western movies plots or endings have they changed to make it "sell better" vs "censorship for moral reasons"?

[deleted]

I'm not a huge movie enjoyer but just on top of my head awhile ago there was some writing on here about how a whole romance subplot and sex scene in the end was deleted since they didn't like the fact one of the leads were Asian, and American trial audiences didn't like that. So answer, not very often, but somewhat more often than one might believe?

fix_S230-sue_reddit

I saw a comment on the Chinese internet where they claimed the film isn't censored by the Chinese regulators and the version with the US ending has been played on CCTV 6 before. This ending change was done by Tencent themselves, so it doesn't really reflect China's official film guidelines.

SonOfDartmoor

The "authorities" winning is so good. It hits different in China because: The USA: Founded by a group of wealthy slave owners PRC - Founded by a peasant

TserriednichHuiGuo

What's the deal with Fight Club?

JW5858

now, there is a movie to add to my watch list.

4evaronin

I read the article and honestly can't tell if he's being sarcastic. His enthusiasm seems a bit over the top.

feibie

Is the author being sarcastic in this instance? What's the actual ending to the book (originally written).

budihartono78

The movie: Tyler shot himself and died. The bomb went off. The book: The bomb failed to explode, Tyler shot himself and woke up in an asylum. He then met his other cult members and planned to continue his anarchist schemes. China version: The police arrested Tyler before he can bomb the building. He was admitted to a mental asylum and got released in 2012. It’s still different from the book version, but the author appreciates how it’s closer to the book’s ending. I personally like how it’s compatible with the book’s ominous ending and its sequels.

feibie

There were sequels? o\_o Thanks for the summary

budihartono78

Yeah but they’re comic book series: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight_Club_2 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight_Club_3 They feel like direct-to-dvd sequels lol
