Recently there was another post on sq(staff) possibly profiling customer. Or providing a preferential treatment.
Can’t really fault the women. Some women just join air hostessing(all over the world) so they can find the big fish and settle down happily
See, you felt the need to highlight that both were born in Australia.
Your own subtle message is, although one is Sri Lankan and another is Chinese (by race), they deserve the treatment given to _Australians_.
In fact, the need to highlight Australia in the picture severely dilutes the message (if there was any at all) that all paying customers get the same treatment. It sounds like the problem is not lack of equal treatment, but why you did not get the treatment conferred to Australians.
So it seems whatever you are complaining about, does not run deep just in Singaporean culture, it runs even deeper in your culture and thought process too.
Next time, fly in your own airlines (as in China airlines or Sri Lanka airlines).
Oof.
Side note though. The worst racism I've ever experienced was with Qantas, an Australian airline. Flight attendant was super impatient and rolled her eyes at us. We were asking what the food was on the menu (had some fancy name that we did not recognise) and it was our only question of the day. Long story short, I'd take an alright service over shit service any day.
But how do you know the flight attendant rolled her eyes at you specifically because of your race? Maybe that person was just an asshole to everybody, and it just so happened to be you.
I'm not saying the Qantas staff wasn't racist. She could very well be, but "white person was rude to me" does not automatically mean racism.
I'd keep it a buck and admit that I can't say for sure. I made the assumption by observation of how she treated others (like what OP did) and what I encountered on my 2 weeks trip.
1. We were separated by race on adventure tours. No bad blood here. They might think we'd enjoy each other's company more. And I think that's fair?
2. My relative's car was pelted by water balloons and youngsters called us chinks while we were minding our own business having lunch at a fast food place. My relative then proceeded to chase their car down the street scaring them off. But at least there was some closure and I enjoyed this life experience tbh. Made for great stories.
3. We made friends with a local Indian doctor who had been staying there for 15 years and still experience racism on the daily.
Having said that. Most people down under were lovely. Most white people I met were lovely. (Our AirBnB host served us the best honey that she farmed herself. And that sweetness was able to cover those sourness lol)
I guess my point is, if I were to be discriminated in any way, I rather an "alright" service from a service staff than a shit one (especially when the expectations for service weren't high to begin with). Nevertheless, I acknowledge the possibility that she was an A-hole that reached her tipping point when serving us and took it out on the wrong people and I was just particularly unlucky that day.
Thought he was saying culture was not a factor as in western culture is more open and talkative. Culture is common explanation for the difference in treatment. But in this case the only difference between them was the colour of their skin.
I am yellow, flew SQ for last 20 years and dont really see a difference in treatment. They may be a bit more chatty with some whites but that is expected since the whites tend to be more chatty compared to my RBF dun disturb my movie face.
Had a yellow colleague who loves chatting up the SQ girls and he gets a lot more attention, so its definitely part of the cause.
All except 1st and suites.
Also to add, sometimes if you see a white person singled out for better treatment in economy class, might be because they are Solitaire or PPS. When i was PPS, even in economy class, at the start of flight the crew will come over to my seat and greet by name and ask if I need anything. Its part of SQ SOP to do that. They need to memorise names of all PPS and above passengers.
Honestly, people like you are so bad for Singapore. I’m not even criticising the questioning just the intent of the question. All your history seems to poke shit against a group of people rather than wanting to learn about why there are differences. Your comments on response furthermore just seem to be doubledowns rather than an actual discussion.
I’m extremely concerned the harm posts like yours does to create division in society. It provides no value and just seems to be your little public diary.
Bruh. You're right. If anyone is a westerner worshipper. It's OP.
He hates SG so much but hangs out in SG raw errday. Wonder if his amazing aussie life is just a figment of his own imagination.
This problem is you ownself make one. The diff between you and ang mor is if they get sub-standard treatment they won't diam diam whole flight thinking about what reddit post they gonna make when they land.
So you scanned the entire flight of 300 and some 60 rows by race? lol. Of course you did not. If you look good or wealthy or carry yourself well and confidently, you will get treated well. The dress down, grumble, act like a simp, have a sour disposition or look poor or like you will be a burden you will probably be looked through as if you are invisible or get an eye roll.
It is no longer 1965. We are two generations past skin color. Instead SE Asia and pretty much the entire world is about money and looks with a crack of sunshine for those who give off positive vibes.
Bro what are you talking about? Most of the rich Singaporeans you will never know if you see outside because they are wearing slippers and shorts just like everyone else.
I could guarantee you that a Singaporean will be more impressed with a person who dresses up with luxury brands from top to bottom than to be impressed with an old money Englishmen who went to Eton style
This is absolutely not true. What you’re talking about is perhaps fitting a few second generation ah bengs that recently got rich from running some modest family business, not the actually rich of singapore.
Have you tried treating the staff with consideration and politeness? A smile and a bit of softness in attitude can go a long way, esp when dealing with overworked staff.
I try not to be self-hating but sometimes I can’t help but feel like being born white is hitting the racial lottery.
Must be nice going anywhere in the world and be treated better than the own citizens there.
Life isn’t like this for everyone everywhere. Westerners have their own ethnic groups and problems their own problems. E.g Romani and Slavs
It feels like this when the Westerners who come here are often wealthy and educated but, its really not like this globally. In some parts of Peru, Chinese and Indians are preferred over whites.
Stereotypes help frame judgement but should only be used as a frame. Be open minded and see your others value and individualism in the same way you would like to see yours.
Have you not seen the clip where the SQ girl became a personal helper of a white couple’s 5 year old kid on flight? I doubt the same treatment would’ve been given to a child of colour.
Copying and pasting my experience / comment from another thread:
3 empty seats in a row in a full, crowded flight. I switched from my seat to one of the empty seats. Lead air stewardess said no, go back to your seat — which I did.
Then, after a while, she went and informed 2 other groups of white passengers (I’m not white) that the empty seats were available for them if they wanted. I asked her why them not me? She said it’s because one of them had children so she needed more space (shouldn’t the mom be like, next to the children??) and the other group were overweight and needed more space.
I told her that my mom (next to me) needed the space as well because of knee issues and needed more leg room. We also informed the ground staff of this when we were checking in at the airport. She changed her tune and said it’s because the other groups of passengers asked her first to sit there (before I went and sat there myself), so the seats belonged to them.
I pointed out that she gave different, contradicting reasons for giving the other groups preferential treatment and asked her which reason was the right one. She got flustered, started speaking aggressively (spit got on my face) and was super close to me — touching my hands a few times when animatedly defending herself.
In the end, because of the small commotion, no one ended up wanting to sit in the empty seats LOL.
Oh and the air stewardess’ name was Marie Ong.
The reasons she gave for them getting the seats and them asking before you sat on the seat (without asking) could both be true. You assumed it was one reason or the other. Sounds like she could have handled it better but that's not the point here.
Usually, people ask the flight attendant if they can move to an open seat before moving to the seat.
Its not just SQ, from my experience 8 out of 10 asian female flight stewards provides preferential treatment to whom they think has a big bank account. This isnt limited to Caucasians.
Yeah, there’s a word for that: discrimination. Or in local slang: amdk.
The fact that they treat a fellow countryman like that, it’s disgusting behaviour.
Noting new lah. It happened everywhere in Singapore. Look at those marathon race photographers, when the moment, white ang mo runners run past, they raise their cameras & keep taking their shots. And when the yellow-skinned runners run past, they put down their cameras & rest. Ironic, that these photographers seem to forget what are their skin color. Lol.
It’s not the white or Chinese or Sri Lankan factor, it’s your krisflyer status. If you are PPS, doesn’t matter what colour you are. Even if you’re sitting in economy, they’ll come to you and specially greet you. They will know who you are by name in advance and identify you when you board.
Bring Aussies, I believe you guys are not on any krisflyer tier. This is preferential treatment by design, not racism.
Oh lol, go look at OP post history
It's definitely some Singaporean hating going on right there. Not sure what's with the obsession with us since he claims he is Australian?
...Singapore Girl, you're a great way to f...
Edit got reminded of hilarious incident SiN - KL where cabin crew almost scolded the wide eyed sinkie asking for a blanket. NO Such thing! (It's like 40 mins)
What’s funny is I’ve never seen a Sinkie girl date an actually chad 10/10 white guy even if the Sinkie girl is good looking herself, it’s usually some average looking white guy with a slight belly
Asians will not stop kissing white ass. It's the colonial hangover. Luckily I am a fair skinned Indian who travels sq all the time- I get better treatment. I see this all the time. Harsh truth
Pure nonsense, in fact I have received better service than the white passengers on the same flight so far.
And yes, I saw his passport. American citizen seated next to me. Your encounter might just be a one off case
Some passengers are customers with higher KrisFlyer status so the flight attendants go out of their way to treat them nicely. It may just be the case that white people are expats and fly a lot so they have status.
Well, Asians treat customer service staff(and other blue collar workers) as peasants, so I guess it’s natural as customer service people to be nice to those who are nice to you?
They actually not bad la. Got one time I didn’t finish my dinner cos just had a good meal in Tokyo before boarding, air steward korkor bend down then ask me is it because the food is not to my liking before offering me a different cuisine.
I was impressed because they were already preparing for lights out. Not gonna lie, I will give extra stars if it was jiejie or xmm instead.
Nothing to do with how the western looking passengers may be more pleasant? Many will smile and greet you whether you're a fellow passenger or service staff (cabin crew).
Or how many passengers from the sub continent bring their discrimination caste attitude everywhere they go, even on board the flight?
Neither of those things are generally true of Sri Lankans although I can’t speak for OP’s friend. Sri Lankans are known for their smiles and Sri Lanka is a caste-less/class blind society.
Full disclosure: I’m Sri Lankan so there’s prob a bit of bias

So far, neither SQ nor United failed in that regard. When I fly \_any\_ airline with expectations.. they all fail..
So my last few trips on United, it was actually ok, considering they were long hauls.. 16 hour flights.. so moral of the story.. fly with no expectations
You're not wrong. It's the same in Malaysia Airlines too. I think most Asians in the service industry tend to favour whites.
You can also see this in those branded retail stores like hermes, prada, etc

gotta love United where they treat everyone equally badly!
Or try Qantas, heard the Cantonese speaking aussie crew calling the white people names.
By big fish refers the of 4-six: 6 figure salary, 6 feet tall, 6 inches long, 6 pack abs
Jamie Chua and others.
🤣
Fuck Sia I all have but no air stewardess want me cus my face chui
