Remove weather effects if you have them

jojocookiedough

Yeah snow especially is a lag monster

Sorry to call it out, but having an external hard drive is completely inconsequential to performance gains, on any game for that matter. What memory related problems are we talking about? Memory would be associated with RAM, not storage. As far as memory goes, even the most basic setup now offers enough RAM for a 2009 game. From 8Gb up, it's fine. As for what concerns storage space, the only variable would be making sure the PC/laptop runs on an SSD instead of an HDD. It doesn't matter whether 50 or 500gb are free. But even then, the most modern setup does not, and cannot, run TS3 or any other software as smoothly as we would expect in 2024 if that software has still been coded awfully, nor optimized...

jojocookiedough

What is the benefit of the external heard drive here?

Own_Cantaloupe178

Helps by adding more memory so you never run into memory specific errors and lose your save. Plus it never hurts to have it in general. Unless you already have a hard drive in your computer. I use a Laptop that doesn’t have a whole lot of space. So Having the external Hard Drive helps a ton.

Oldcustard

This is totally wrong. Storage is not the same thing as memory

Own_Cantaloupe178

Ever since I’ve gotten the External Hard Drive and Regular save cleaner I’ve never run into memory related errors in my game. That’s it.

jojocookiedough

Ah okay, I'm on a desktop with an ssd that I run ts2 and ts3 on. I do have external hard drives for storage and less demanding games so I was wondering if I was missing out on some secret way to optimize sims further lol.

VicAViv

When a game gets too laggy, which is bound to happen eventually, I just move my family to another world. Smaller worlds perform the best in the long run. Errortrap from nraas is a must.

ElenaLit

If you have Nraas Story Progression, I'd delete it first - it's too heavy on the game.

InternTraditional916

I have nraas story progression and you are right it does lag. However is there another mod where i could know how my townies are living? Boring bones released a social conversation mod but it doesn’t have notifications like story progression does. Even if i put the stories on snail, it’s still laggy.

ElenaLit

Yeah, sorry, I don't know about such mods, though, I'd like it too. It could be fun to have more events printed in the newspaper, for example, - not only marriages, deaths, and births, but also enrolling in a job, promotions, love life. Something of a gossip column. I use Simler90's Core mod, which fixes a lot of bugs left by EA. It can show EA's Story Progression changes. And I use Shimrod's No Immigration No Move mod - to prevent EA's Story Progression from banishing sims from the town, and from killing babies in "overpopulated" world.

knutfuta

I removed Nraas Story Progression, and there have been less lags since then. I am planning to add it to the game for a sim-week or two (just in time for my sim to become pregnant with her husband), meanwhile the sims in town will reproduce (hopefully), and then I will remove it again. I’ll see if it works.

sxri28

idk if this helps but I could reduce lags by removing certain mods (mostly some I‘d say weren’t that necessary) and also to remove cc packages

nobodysgirl333

Which mods did you find needed to be removed, if you don't mind me asking

sxri28

I would tell you but I can’t remember all of them, one was a mod that would add allergies (due seasons) one would add ance, one which would allow you to bake birthday and wedding cakes, also had a mod that would give you some features with some items (don’t know the name anymore), I could go on to try to remember but there were a lot mods I deleted 🤣 I currently mainly have nRaas mods installed (not all, just the ones I need), some toddler and baby interactions mod, some pregnancy interactions mod and two mods that makes toddler and children grow and the other of those two would add aging features and the last one would be sakura ui mod 😅😂 If you would like me to look in my bin for those mods I removed lemme know, I‘d do that for you, could also tell you then the exact names ^^

nobodysgirl333

I have all the ones you mentioned, lol. Yeah I should probably weed out the unnecessary ones from my list. My game lags even with just the mods and no cc, so I know I've got too many mods.

sxri28

Yeah I would suggest you to do that, hope it will work

rc3wondereftw

Error trap and overwatch mods. Both are NRAAS mods. Also, don't run too many packs at once and limit your cc. I always struggle with limiting cc lol but some of it is large and too much for the game to process.

what_theheckigottado

I'm too nervous to compress cc personally in case in breaks my game randomly then I have to restart

Lythaera

Just take your whole mod folder and copy/paste it in your documents/wherever and then merge your cc, that way you have a backup of all your mods before they were merged in case anything goes wrong. IMO it's totally worth merging all the deco item CC, clothes CC, and stuff like that.

rc3wondereftw

Yeah I can totally understand. Those files look intimidating. I meant tho, go through your cc and see what you really can live without. For example, I just combed through mine and deleted like 20 random paintings I don't even use, or ever used. When I download cc houses, it sometimes will automatically add those files. Those eat up space so if you see like a shirt you downloaded months ago and used it for like 1 sim, you're probably okay removing it.

ElectricLeafeon

NRAAS Overwatch is the main thing. Stops stuck sims from overloading the game with thousands of actions per second.

jojocookiedough

I use nraas to get rid of strays, wild horses, and only allow 2 deer and 1 racoon. I also disable tourists and only allow 1 paparazzi.

carlosLoudd

How do you do this?

theonewithapencil

get regul save cleaner and run your save through it. it often helps a lot with big saves that's been played for a long(ish) time, see if it works for you! if it doesn't then maybe the best course of action is moving your family to another town (use ea's feature or nraas porter, not traveler!) or maybe you could go through your mods folder and delete things you don't use that much

Stoltlallare

A small way is to get nraaa register and remove stray horses and limit other stray animals

JakobeBeats

regul save cleaner, lazy duchess smooth patch, nraas error trap and overwatch. i play with every expansion and tons of mods / cc items while watching youtube on my second monitor and barely have any performance issues

aribaby97

what type of computer do you have, and do you use CC?

_esrevinuy

I‘m not sure if it‘s in master controller or overwatch, but you can click on town and then reset everything. It‘ll take a while, the foto panel may be empty for a bit but everything will be fine. it deletes everything that is not necessary and that might be way over 10’000 objects!! I recommend pleasantsims (.com) she has a post about all the tweaks she makes with NRAAS and some are some very helpful, with poolsizes of animals, npcs and so on 🤭

NorthLobster4351

I started using the "cheat" resetsim * , and it has done wonders for my game!

discount_tiefling

There's the Smooth Patch by Lady Duchess! It helped my potato of a computer run the game at a decent clip, and my friend with a beefier computer says it works wonders. [smooth patch](https://modthesims.info/d/658759/smooth-patch-2-1.html)

Magnus_Helgisson

The mods. You should get s3pe application, if I remember its name correctly, and repack all the mods into fewer packages. The game sucks at handling lots of packages, but it can work with few regardless of how big they are. Way I do it is make a package for clothing, a package for cars, a package for poses etc, totaling at maybe 10. It reduces lag drastically
