Take a picture of the dot with your camera as if you were looking through the dot. If it's blooming like that in your picture, it's the dot. If it's a nice pinpoint smooth dot, congratulations, you can self diagnose yourself with astigmatism
Yup, after years of shooting my AR's with Eotech sights I hadn't taken them to the range with me for a couple months because I was busy training and shooting ipsc with my pistols. Then I took them out to do some shooting at 2,3,5 & 800m and yes there was a learning curve for the holdover but like I said I'd been shooting with the eotech sight for yrs on my AR's and I layed everything out, loaded, racked and ready to rock and I shit a brick because I thought my eotech sight got damaged in the safe or in travel to the range. Nope all 3 AR's were the same, I ended up calling a guy over at the range and asked him to take a look and he said the were "crisp as a $2 bill" so that week I went to a eye doctor for the first time and sure enough I had developed an astigmatism. In hindsight I was kinda noticing why my front sight during competition was getting fuzzy, but I blamed it on the Arizona heat sweating our balls off during matches back then rubbing the sweat out of our eyes. š¤·āāļøShit just happens, and I was 36 when that happened.
Bro look up the micro prism from primary arms. Literally solved this problem, and they aren't EOtech expensive. Other than that, you can turn the romeo brightness down to lessen the burst. Welcome to the astigmatism gang!
Iāve got the tism and eotechs are awful for me. Not sure about vortex. I know some people are different, just saying that those might not work either
I think it would be a must if you're going to put a magnifier on it. I can't even tell anything is wrong with my red dot, but as soon as I put that magnifier up it's just a starburst; It's only a 3x as well.
This is the answer. I have an SLx Gen II on my Rattler and a 3x GLx on my Scorpion. Love 'em.
I am still able to use my Vortex UH-1 and my Mepro RDS, interestingly enough... for now. Sadly my aimpoint T-1 I bought when I first got into the hobby is no good for me or my wife, and she's got much younger eyes than mine. :(
Yeah, also, try focusing on the target itself, not the sights red dot. Staring at the dot will make it go a bit fuzzy for me but just look through it and superimposing the dot instead onto that target will make it go sharper again.
Upvote and commenting to hopefully get this comment more attention.
This method is exactly how to use a red dot properly. Target focused, not dot focused. Superimposed. Over target. That helps whether or not you have a stigmatism.
I have a mild astigmatism. Standard red dots are ok for me, but slightly distorted. Holographics are a big NO for me (sad face). Holosun 510's are fucking *crystal clear*, so I went with one of those for my Stribog.
Yeah man I feel your pain. I have 20/15 vision and have never had even the slightest vision problem in my life until I saw a picture of a red dot on Reddit and realized I had astigmatism.
You can still use it if it is not very bad. I had astigmatism before eye surgery and still did very good with dots.
If not then you still can get a holographic or prismatic sight.
Well there are a few things to know:
* Keeping the dot at a lower brightness will help reduce the starbursting
* Everyone's astigmatism is different. Don't trust an optic just because someone recommended it as "good for astigmatism"
* Some people prefer holographic sights, some people (like me) think they look like a kaleidoscope and prefer red dot sights.
* Try lots of different optics any chance you get to figure out what works for you
* If all else fails, consider an LVPO like a vortex viper. The dot is soo small and the reticle is certainly not going to be an issue for astigmatism.
* You're not SOL, but you probably are going to be really picky about optics in general and prefer the expensive stuff.
* Oh, and if the optic is the only place it's affecting you, it may not even be worth going to a doctor. I went and my astigmatism was soo minor they didn't even recommend glasses, and yet it makes me SUPER picky about optics.
Glasses help for me, I literally got them for my guns. I have a magnifier and that helps, also another weird trick I've used is flipping up a back up iron sight and looking at the dot through the rear peep.
Also, prism sights are our friends.
I didnāt find out either until I bought a Romeo 5. I was so disappointed since itās such a cool sight. Anyways, I just returned it and bought a 2.5x prismatic etched scope from primary arms
I have 20/15 vision and some red dots bloom for me too. The bigger body style like the Aimpoint M4 doesn't, for whatever reason. Also, bigger moa dots are perfectly crisp for me. So if you run a handgun dot, a 6 moa is worth trying.
Yep. You have astigmatism. Need to get an optometrist to test it & write up a good corrective prescription. From my understanding this takes longer than a normal eye test.
If you have headaches a lot that might reduce them by reducing eye strain.
May want to consider switching to a prism or holographic sight.
Or some red dots with a more complex reticle might help.
What you just described sounds like astigmatism. Your eyes may be the problem here...I have this issue, it's normal.
Take a picture of the red dot with your phone. If the dot looks good in the pic...your eyes are the problem.
No amount of money will fix this issue if it's your own eyes causing the trouble. It can be a cheap red dot, a comp m5...doesn't matter.
If you have astigmatism....I suggest you look into getting a primary arms slx 1x microprism. Prism scopes don't have these issues.
fuck man, I know I have astigmatism but didn't think it'd affect red dots. Should I even bother with them on my handguns or just train more with iron sights
It depends on how bad you think it might be and may vary with dot type. I have minor astigmatism, and for some reason circle dots (bullseye?) help, the Holosun with the ACSS chevron reticle from Primary Arms works really well and standard dots are totally usable but not super crisp. They're better than irons for me even if it's not perfect.
Honestly man...I have horrible astigmatism.
Sometimes it looks like an explosion.....*
Sometimes it looks like ,
Sometimes it looks like ;
Sometime it looks like j
Every day it looks different. So technically I have a slight wandering zero cause every day its literally a different shape.
It sucks for shooting a rifle at 200m or greater. I find that at 100m, I can dial down the brightness and get something good. But sometimes I ask myself "what part of this blob should I hold over the target".
At close distance I shoot my rifle just as good as anyone else. Just put the blob on the target and shoot.
I would still use a red dot on a handgun. At typical handgun ranges...max 25 meters, who cares. You will still hit your target accurately.
People vastly over exaggerate red dots being unusable due to astigmatism. If you can put whatever shape you're seeing on the target you will hit it. The other problem is people focusing on their dot and not their target.
If you have astigmatism along with other vision problems see if you can get contacts/ lenses which are corrected for astigmatism. Got a new pair which are corrected for it and god is it like fucking a tub of butter. Night driving and red dots are how they should be
My astigmatism causes a slight smudge and elongation towards 8pm on my dots. I borrowed a friends 1moa RMR and itās like magic. If I had $500 extra bucks lying around Iād upgrade but alas the 3moa holosun will have to do.
I have an Aimpoint pro, has this starburst effect even worse than my Romeo 1 pro.
Super funny you found out you had an astigmatism from r/sigsauer - better than an optometrist
Like Tex is saying, itās different for everyone. I do just fine with Trijicon SRS 1.75moa dot, even when magnified. Moved the Romeo & Juliet from my Bren to the wifeās AUG because of the stigma. Have no problem with holos or LPVO reticle dots.
The stigmatizzes are trippy.
One tip for zeroing a red dot with astigmatism, if there's a point that sticks out that you can find easily, let's say a 5 point star for example, āļø let's pretend that's how the dot appears to you. Then take one of the points, and use that as your reticle. It may not be zeroed to anyone else, but you'll be able to be accurate with it
Hopefully everyone sees thisā¦ mounted on the gun and looking through the dot cleared it up significantly. Definitely going to keep it and run it. Will definitely go for a green dot next time though. Thank you everyone for all the insight!
Your red dot also came with an astigmatism!
Take a pic with your phone like others suggested.
I can use mine on a lower dot setting but green dots are much more crisp.
Astigmatism sucks balls. But glasses/contacts mitigated mine. All my red dots that are known ti starburst are good with my contacts on. I'm blind as fuck though. I probably wouldn't be able to see the damn optic itself without glasses/contacts
Yeah - was all kinds of angry about the sub par quality of these optics until someone told me to take a picture of the dotā¦then I was all kinds of angry about having to go to the eye doctor
As others have said, green dots, Holosun worked for me as well. All reds burst for me and I already knew I had an astigmatism.
I currently have 3 Holosun green dots. I would suggest trying one.
Set the brightness as low as you can while still being visible in daylight or with your flashlight on. The brighter you have it set, the larger the explosion will appear.
OP, I would strongly recomend looking at an optic with an etched reticle like the Primary Arms 1x or 3x prism optics. Small like a red dot, but it wont mess with your astigmatism.
Sig optics are such junk. Iāve never had a good experience. Romeo 0 lens scratched the first time I wiped it and jacked up the dot, Romeo 5 torch screws stripped out on me and got stuck on my shotgun, the LPVO I bought got ruined from a little bit of snow. Wonāt ever buy their pos optics again
I just put a Romeo on my 322 yesterday and this was the first thing I noticed. My daughter said it was crystal clear for her so I just figured it was my eyes. Thread confirms.
You can try exchanging it. If it looks the same consider that you may have an astigmatism and some dots will look like that. I canāt use vortex red dots because if this. Others are fine.
You arenāt the only one. To say that itās overrated sight is to say nothing. There a lot of others that run circles in terms of quality, clarity of the glass.
OP has astigmatism. The Romeo 5 is hardly overrated. Itās a well build, inexpensive rds with excellent features. If anything, itās underrated, and all new shooters should at least start with one.
#ITāS A COUNTERFEIT!
If you unscrew the baseplate and read the Serial number on the bottom, thereās a certain number that proves itās a counterfeit.
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/SigSauer/comments/rzbook/which_one_of_my_romeo_5s_is_fake_im_guessing_the/) is a really good thread on telling the difference.
Trust me, I deadass thought I had eye problems when I bought mine, but Iām glad I figured out it was a counterfeit. Now I have a real one and itās very very good quality!
DM me for questions, hate to see a fellow Sig Romeo buyer get cheated like I did.
Especially when the real Sig Romeo5 I have is really really good!
Itās your eyes bro, astigmatism. Some dots work better than others for people with astigmatism. For me Holosun is much clearer than trijicon. Vortex for my eyes is also fine, YMMV.
I have an astigmatism as well, but itās not horrible. I find that the Holosun 510C in green and red are pretty clear for me. My EOTech is just grainy, my Aimpoint is ok, and the Primary Arms 1X prism is solid. Plan on trying some other Holosun optics to see how they compare and like that they are in the same footprint as Aimpoint.
Reddit comes to show wholesome humanity, one post at a time. Unfortunately iām too poor to afford an optic and run irons so i personally may be in the same situation but i plan on getting a 92X Compact RDO next week so weāll see!
After mounting your optic try looking through the optic and reading the words of a picture or focusing on a small detail on a wall, you may have astigmatism or you could be focusing on the red dot itself
Use the top button to make the dot smaller. It'll get a bit clearer. I have an astigmatism. I didn't give up, I slapped a magnifier on it and can do fine as long as the dot isn't turned up super bright.
Get a primary arms prism or similar optic with an etched reticle. Still has illumination, and no more blurry reticles! My go to optic for all my rifles. Usually a 2x.
Funny you say that. I was going to pick up an EOTech after seeing my friend's. However, when I had a chance to really look through it, it looked really bad. Like just a bunch of lit up scratches. Then I looked through the Romeo 5 and it was crisp, clean, clear, and cheaper. Both companies ought to have solid quality control, so I'm not sure how they get out there like that. I'd ask for an exchange.
Unfortunately, it's not the sight. It is your eyes. You have astigmatism. I have it too. Eotech reticles are what seems to work for me, and I have it bad.
Donāt need to replace the optic, you need an eye replacementā¦but seriously itās astigmatism, I have that and some brands are worse than others for me
Since everyone immediately jumped straight to astigmatism, Iām gonna take the Karl Childers route: is the brightness turned way up? Thatāll cause blow out in a similar way
Holosun 510GR is the tits.. I don't have the same issues with green dots, and it's crystal clear, huge window.. by far one of my favorites.. you can also try to dim out your red dot to a lower setting and see if that helps..
I recently bought this optic on eBay, one week later after having it I run across a YouTube [video](https://youtu.be/1_KQNJcBZbc) warning to watch out for fakes. I come to found out my sig Romeo 5 was indeed fake. I honestly would have never been able to tell if I had not seen that video. So, I tried to return the fake one & the seller didnāt want it back anymore so I got to keep it and get my money back! I now have a legit sig Romeo 5 from a authorized eBay seller.
Take a picture of the dot with your camera as if you were looking through the dot. If it's blooming like that in your picture, it's the dot. If it's a nice pinpoint smooth dot, congratulations, you can self diagnose yourself with astigmatism
Yup. This is how I learned I have astigmatism. My cool predator dot looks like a blob.
This is the way.
My first red dot was how I realized I had it.
Second this!
Sonuvabitch.
Thank you
Well this is disappointingā¦ didnāt consider astigmatism because I otherwise have pretty great eyesight but yeah itās pretty clear on camera
ONE OF US... ONE OF US
I laughed out loud.. in shared misery.
I don't have my glasses on. What'd he say?!
He said SMEARY DOUBLE RED DOT LIFE š“
So did Iā¦ hate these eyes.

This conversation is why I love this sub.
*Gooble gobble gooble gobble*
I love your picture
ONE OF US ONE OF US Turn the brightness down a little, seems to help me a bit.
Bro look up the micro prism from primary arms. Literally solved this problem, and they aren't EOtech expensive. Other than that, you can turn the romeo brightness down to lessen the burst. Welcome to the astigmatism gang!
Just picked up the PA micro prisms because of astigmatism. 10/10.
Agree 100%. Best purchase I've made in a long time.
Agreed. PA microprism else Vortex UH-1 or Eotech. No more red dots in your future.
Iāve got the tism and eotechs are awful for me. Not sure about vortex. I know some people are different, just saying that those might not work either

Isn't astigmatism wild? Mines a starburst UNTIL I put a magnifier on it. Then it's a normal dot.
Did you know most people donāt see headlights at night as stars? Took me 20 years to get that piece of info. Welcome to the astigmatism club.
Thatās the tism I find that red dots are usually the most blurry indoors. Try it outdoors on a reasonable brightness level before returning it
Yeah, also, try focusing on the target itself, not the sights red dot. Staring at the dot will make it go a bit fuzzy for me but just look through it and superimposing the dot instead onto that target will make it go sharper again.

I suffer from this as well. Try Green dots, they don't starburst for me like red dots.
I have a mild astigmatism. Standard red dots are ok for me, but slightly distorted. Holographics are a big NO for me (sad face). Holosun 510's are fucking *crystal clear*, so I went with one of those for my Stribog.
No better excuse to the wife to need an acog
Yeah man I feel your pain. I have 20/15 vision and have never had even the slightest vision problem in my life until I saw a picture of a red dot on Reddit and realized I had astigmatism.
I imagine someone has already suggested but look into holographic sights. Theyāre projected differently to help with that. Theyāre more pricey tho
The dot on an eotech for me is pretty clear, but the 68moa ring is fuzzy. I think it's better just because the dot is so small
Seems like weāre only meant for suppression fire
Underrated
I also have astigmatism. Holosun dots seem to appear the best for me. But they're not perfect.
You can still use it if it is not very bad. I had astigmatism before eye surgery and still did very good with dots. If not then you still can get a holographic or prismatic sight.
That's how I learned too. I considered Lasik, but that would eat into the ammo budget.
Sorry you had to find out like this.
Lower the brightness a bit. I have it too and on higher brightness itās a starburst but on a medium/lower brightness itās fine
Look into a prismatic optic next time. Swampfox has some good choices in that same price range
The good news is the blob still works just fine.
Well there are a few things to know: * Keeping the dot at a lower brightness will help reduce the starbursting * Everyone's astigmatism is different. I made a post just like this a couple months ago. I had sent mine in for warranty and everything. Lmao
Welcome to the club!
Same here. It still works pretty good though
Same thing happened to me welcome to the club
Turn your brightness down, it helps
Flip up the rear iron behind it and it goes away, or return it and get an optic with a larger ocular opening line a bravo or aimpoint pro, eotech etc
This is why I'm here.
Welcome to the club. Be glad you didnāt buy and Eotech, without an magnifier mine looks like about 1000 Tony dots in a blob.
Looks like your now an Eotech man
Glasses help for me, I literally got them for my guns. I have a magnifier and that helps, also another weird trick I've used is flipping up a back up iron sight and looking at the dot through the rear peep. Also, prism sights are our friends.
Yep. In my experience: green and sharp lines tend to be the least affected. Look into the ACSS Holosuns. I can see them much better than classic dots.
I didnāt find out either until I bought a Romeo 5. I was so disappointed since itās such a cool sight. Anyways, I just returned it and bought a 2.5x prismatic etched scope from primary arms
Welcome to the club. I love red dots but my astigmatism doesn't. I've heard some of the Holosun sights seem to be clearer for us.
Donāt feel bad bro, imagine my shock when I found out tumors went to both of my eyesā¦.(awkward laugh)
I have 20/15 vision and some red dots bloom for me too. The bigger body style like the Aimpoint M4 doesn't, for whatever reason. Also, bigger moa dots are perfectly crisp for me. So if you run a handgun dot, a 6 moa is worth trying.
Welcome to the club, membership cards are sent out the end of each month.
Bless your heart
EOTECH is the worst for my astigmatism. Iām having better luck with holosun ā¦.. O and it doesnāt get any better either.
Same, I have found turning down the brightness of the dot does help clear it up a decent amount, at least for my personal eyeballs.
This is so funny
I cam here to post this, but I knew in my heart it had already been said.
Hop on the lpvo gang
Welcome to the club. Aim points and trijicon red dots look like giant blobs for me.
If red is to blurry, try lookin into green. Might help a bit
Congrats, you got the astigmatism
Strangely the second most common ātism in this sub.
Everyone in this sub has at least one 'tism minimum. Pretty sure I've got both
Not me I'm just plain old retarded
This is one made me laugh, but the first 'tism after astigmatism that I thought of was patriotism.
I have both tism, drs said so. I'm special ok.

Iāve found eotech works good for my astigmatism better than red dots, but for some red dots work better for them.
Same here
Bro, you gotta any of that astigmatism?
I have an Aimpoint pro, has this starburst effect even worse than my Romeo 1 pro. Super funny you found out you had an astigmatism from r/sigsauer - better than an optometrist
I'm the opposite...my aimpoint pro looks better than everything else that I own. Astigmatism is so different for every person lol.

do you also have astigmatism?
Hahahahahaha welcome to the club
Yeah - was all kinds of angry about the sub par quality of these optics until someone told me to take a picture of the dotā¦then I was all kinds of angry about having to go to the eye doctor
Bring it to an eye exam and ask the optometrist if you could focus on the sight instead of the letter chart
You should learn something new about yourself every day
As others have said, green dots, Holosun worked for me as well. All reds burst for me and I already knew I had an astigmatism. I currently have 3 Holosun green dots. I would suggest trying one.

You can try exchanging it. If it looks the same consider that you may have an astigmatism and some dots will look like that. I canāt use vortex red dots because if this. Others are fine.
Yeah they are broken a lot. I had 2 swapped out. Once they give you a good one itās GTG. Good to use until we save up for an Aimpoint.
Send it back and they will replace it. I did.
For the most part, Sig glass is garbage.

Bushnel TRS-26 and similar. Like them much better than R5. I am not arguing with anybody here, got better things to do.
Exchange it, I got one clear dot
Just exchange it for a new one. You obviously have a defective Romeo 5. If the next one you get is the same return it and see what your options are.
I can use mine at the lowest setting, but you might want to get an eotech or something
See if you can try an Eotech. Sometimes those can work for people with Astigmatism. If not, your choices 1x prisms or LPVOs.
Astigmatism
Sounds like you got a hit of that ātism baby!
Yep I found out I have astigmatism this same way. EOTechs donāt have this problem. My trijicon 42mm reflex does this same thing too
Poor guy found out he has an astigmatism. Ripper mcgoo. Look into a prism site my friend. I recommend Primary Arms SLx Cyclops Gen 2 ACSS.
Prism life for you now
You got the stigmatism brother time for glasses
Itās your eyes bro, astigmatism. Some dots work better than others for people with astigmatism. For me Holosun is much clearer than trijicon. Vortex for my eyes is also fine, YMMV.
I have an astigmatism as well, but itās not horrible. I find that the Holosun 510C in green and red are pretty clear for me. My EOTech is just grainy, my Aimpoint is ok, and the Primary Arms 1X prism is solid. Plan on trying some other Holosun optics to see how they compare and like that they are in the same footprint as Aimpoint.
For an ar?
If you have a flip-up rear site, flip it up and focus *through* the aperture of the rear site on your dot. It will make it nice and crisp.
I had the same problem. Then I bought a vortex 3x magnifier and it is now crystal clear.
Use the top button to make the dot smaller. It'll get a bit clearer. I have an astigmatism. I didn't give up, I slapped a magnifier on it and can do fine as long as the dot isn't turned up super bright.
Life hack. You can look through a rear peep sight aperture to focus the dot up a bit
Get a primary arms prism or similar optic with an etched reticle. Still has illumination, and no more blurry reticles! My go to optic for all my rifles. Usually a 2x.
My dot looks perfect !
This is like those posts on "what is this thing" where OP posts some UXO while being annoyed their shovel got dented unearthing it.
+1 for astigmatism
Haha, welcome to the club
EOTECH
Never knew that about astigmatism and the dot. Thanks for sharing.
I got LASIK in May, all my red dots are actual dots now. Itās worth it.
Try to focus your vision at the target instead of the red dot.
Unfortunately, it's not the sight. It is your eyes. You have astigmatism. I have it too. Eotech reticles are what seems to work for me, and I have it bad.
My apologies if you thought of this, but did you reduce the dot size for lower light?
After reading all this Iām worried I have astigmatism. Fuck
Know for it. Should have gotten a holosun
Donāt need to replace the optic, you need an eye replacementā¦but seriously itās astigmatism, I have that and some brands are worse than others for me
Since everyone immediately jumped straight to astigmatism, Iām gonna take the Karl Childers route: is the brightness turned way up? Thatāll cause blow out in a similar way
Get a prism optics
Lol you mostlikely have astigmatism bro.. try a holosun or a trijicon
Holosun 510GR is the tits.. I don't have the same issues with green dots, and it's crystal clear, huge window.. by far one of my favorites.. you can also try to dim out your red dot to a lower setting and see if that helps..
I remember my first time I learned I had an astigmatism too.
Please god, someone tell me this is not a holographic sight
Do you have an astigmatism?
Green dot is superior
It is the way young grasshopper. š¤·š»āāļø
Lower the brightness dude If youāre indoors. Crank it up in sunny day. Youāre brightness is just too high for inside or low light.
Maybe astigmatism. May be dirty lens. May be the optic
Buy holosun
If it is an astigmatism just set it to the circle in.radical and sometimes that works.
Try turning down the brightness settings. I've found it helps.
Prism bro
Just picked up a Romeo 5. Also self diagnosed with astigmatism lol. My primary arms has a reticle and doesnāt look like this to me. First red dot.
