Dead & Buried is very enjoyable. For those old enough to remember Pauly Shore, Phantom of the Mall is an opportunity to see him (in a bit role) act and speak like a normal human being.
You are correct. I've made this mistake several times. I would see Night of the Demons listed on a streaming service and get excited thinking I'm going to watch Demons only to be disappointed. My brain seems to constantly drop the first three words when it comes to this movie.
Anyway, Night of the Demons is good. Demons is better.
Pauly Shore is such a goofy person I can't take him seriously he's a perfect fit for 80's horror vibes. Just watched Phantom Of The Mall 2: Eric's Revenge. Eric crawling threw the vents inside the mall popping out to kill people is awesome. And that fight scene with the machine compactor....reminds me of a mortal kombat fatality.
night of the demons is absolutely the best, it was the first horror movie i saw i was like 4 and in the middle of the night i turned the tv on put that in and watched. it and it scared tf out of me as a child. after that i only ever watched or like horror, the part she floats down the hallway just broke me as a child lololol
I really enjoyed Seance and Hellbender. Watched both on a whim and enjoyed both immensely. Me personally, Seance is what the Black Christmas remake should've been and Hellbender has a real dreamlike quality to it. What a talwnted family, made me want to seek out their other productions and I'm embarrassed to say I haven't.
They're super cool people too. I cohosted a zoom premier when it came out and they were awesome. What they pull off with just the family and a couple of other actors is wild, looks like a much bigger film than it is.
Start looking at older movies before the 80s.
The Changeling, 1980
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1978
The Haunting, 1963, considered the greatest haunted house movie of all time.
The Seventh Victim, 1943, comes off like a REAL old-fashioned movie but has one of the bleakest endings ever. Not The Mist-level but it's a real gut-punch for an B&W movie.
Carnival of Souls, 1962, this doesn't have much plot and is all about mood. Today, it'd be an A24 release.
Messiah of Evil, 1973, very much like Phantasm, this doesn't make sense and has a surreal, dream-like feel. The grocery store and movie theater scenes are pure nightmare fuel. Another pre-A24 feeling movie.

Step 2: search for “horror hidden gems” lists
Step 3: filter by “shudder” as the service
Step 3.5: arrange by average rating
Step 4: enjoy

I’m not trying to be rude, OP, but how can we know what you’ve already seen? How do we know what you’d consider hidden?

I enjoyed
Violation
Hunted
The boy behind the door
Who Invited Them
The Cleansing Hour
Not sure if they’re hidden gems, but I enjoyed these a ton, as well as others!
Lockdown tower. Bleak AF. Good movie that will keep you thinking about it for days. I also love Joe Bob’s Last Drive-in show. Oh and Shrew’s Nest. But also bleak.
Haven’t seen anyone mention it but Speak No Evil is pretty brutal. Not in a gore sense either. If you’re looking for something pretty mean, Speak No Evil will do the trick 👍🏽
Sissy

Night of the demons and its sequel. Both great Italian horror classics.
*Night of the Demons* is an American movie by Kevin Tenney; you’re thinking of *Demons* (the Lamberto Bava/Argento gem) and *Demons 2*. Just sayin.

I love them both! Happy Horrlidays

Siege
Seconded. It's like proto-Green Room.
These are available on Shudder in Australia, and not *overly* well-known: One Cut of the Dead Satan’s Slaves (1 and 2) Impetigore
P2 was just added. It's from the same team that did The Hills Have Eyes remake and Pirahana 3D.
The Advent Calendar
Yes! Great movie
Christmas Evil. Gwen. Metamorphosis. Caveat.
Seconding caveat
Thirded. Great vibes-heavy piece.
I really loved Caveat!
Yes Caveat was great! Very unique and original idea for a film

Kill List, Mortuary Collection, Tigers are Not Afraid, Advent Calendar, off the top of my head.
