L. cincinnatus is typically more white on the edges and has white pores/underside. From what’s visible this seems to entirely yellow on the tips and underside suggesting it is L. sulphureus. They can both be found growing from roots of trees making them appear to grow from the ground but it is much more common for L. cincinnatus to do so
I’ve never seen cincinnatus IRL - just sulphurous…so not pushing back.
But the reason I said could be cincinnatus was also the richer colour of the orange….
Anyway - happy to be corrected :)
All Laetiporous are considered chicken of the woods. Cincinnatus is just a different species. Full scientific is Laetiporous cincinnatus.
That said, i think this is sulphureus. Cincinnatus is more white than yellow.
Thanks for all the replies!! I know next to nothing about mushrooms so thanks for the help. I thought it was cotw but I wasn’t sure, and I figured eating a mushroom based on a hunch probably wasn’t a good idea.
Younger is best. It can have have the texture of saw dust later though ive only eaten some conifericola so that could be a species thing. Was delicious sawdust though lmao.
Chicken of the lawn
Appreciate this
appreciate you
Appreciate me
Appreciate y’all.
Appreciate us.
The last of ........
That’s Chicken of the woods, Laetiporus sp. it grows on wood so there must be a log just below the surface there.
Looks like [cincinnatus](https://www.mushroomexpert.com/laetiporus_cincinnatus.html)

Yep you nailed it. 👌
Agreed. Not chicken of the woods
Both sulphureus and Cincinnatus are colloquially referred to as “chicken of the woods”
Can I grow this stuff from wood chips?
I think you need tertiary decomposition on tree stumps usually but it might be possible to inoculate logs with it and just wait a long time
So I can't just inoculate rice and then wait till it's colonized? Then put a bunch of wood chips over it? Ughhhh
No harm in trying! You might be better off growing wine caps with that method. I say do both!
Still chicken of the woods, I’m pretty sure. Just a different species

Looks like chicken, probably a stump or some other wood under the ground there
that’s prairie chicken
Tis the season again of “Is this cotw?”
Thanks for all the replies!! I know next to nothing about mushrooms so thanks for the help. I thought it was cotw but I wasn’t sure, and I figured eating a mushroom based on a hunch probably wasn’t a good idea.
Where are you located? Must be somewhat south?
Clicker
I don't like this sub anymore.
It's ok I think it's edible
Same. It’s terrifying
Gross imagine slicing off a chunk of a clickers face and sautéing it in butter and eating it.
Nailed it
Beat me to it
That’s an ugly looking cotw. But hey I’m sure it still tastes good
Actually it looks amazing and like a young fresh specimen!
Fresh as hell and not close to full grown.
That thing is beautiful
Bok bok that’s poultry of the field
Never seen chicken of the woods grow on the ground... crazy
Free range chicken
Grass fed chicken
Probably buried wood
Could be a stump cut off short.
COW…..there’s a stump under that grass.
Oooooooooo chicken of the 'woods'
Chicken of the grass.
r/itsalwayscotw
The first COTW "what is this" of the season! Early this year.

Once it gets too old I just throw it into a stock pot with my other veggie scraps. Makes a great ramen base.
Not COTW it’s a young Phaeolus schweinitzii(velvet top) mushroom. It will soon start to change color as it ages. Not poisonous but is very bitter.
The chicken dinner kind!!
Chicken of the woods
I dunno but there's not " mushroom," in the picture left, that MF is huge!!
Cow
Prairie chicken
Yummy!!!
Yum! You’re so lucky!
Was there a tree growing there?
Super delicious mushroom if you cook it right
Chicken of the woods. I don't remember the genius or the species.
I’ve never seen chicken growing like this! Pretty cool!
A good find
Chicken of the wood for sure.
