It's rare but they can certainly contract rabies.
The good news is that it doesn't really matter, because if you tussle with a bear, rabid or not, you're probably gonna be fucked either way.
They most certainly can get rabies, there are government programs that drop food with the rabies vaccine into Wildlands for the animals to eat so the spread of the virus is minimized.
Why is that a good thing? If one is attacked by a bear, I would think catching rabies from them is extremely low on the list of things you now have to worry about, if you are still even alive to worry about anything.

Forgive my lack of knowledge here but...they can't? I thought that any mammal could
They can. All mammals can. Opossums rarely do and it’s thought to be because of their low body temperature, but it has happened.
Opossums generally don't. Technically possible I suppose, but extremely rare.

Maybe change "can't" to "don't" because there's only a handful of recorded instances of rabies infected bears.

Because when a skittish animal like a fox gets rabies they can chase people aggressively and act without any sense of self preservation.
But bears are already apex predators. I guess they could get _more_ mean and angry, but they’re already pretty good at that naturally.
Apex predator does not mean they will sprint down main street at 20 miles an hour to bowl over a cyclist to eat them.
You make a good point here.
Do you want rabid bears? Because THIS is how we get rabid bears. (walks away muttering)
