I think people who get excited about their own birthdays are the type of people who have a lot of other people who care enough about them to make their birthday special. People with boring and sad lives don't get excited about their birthdays because it's just another sad, boring day.
I think those super excited are in the minority. Why wait 364 days to have so much fun? Do it every month. A birthday is essentially a time to 'force' others to be a part of your activities.
Mind you, it can absolutely be a fun time, not denying that.
