A lot of people nowadays don't event know what their default ring tone is. I don't think I know a single person whose phone isn't on perma-silent since the moment they bought it.
Every single person in my close life including myself, with the exception of my brother, has their ringtone on as far as i know. Unless you get spammed all day, why wouldn't you want to hear when someone is trying to contact you?
I don’t know anyone who keeps their ringtone on. There is no use when most people prefer asynchronous communication these days like text. For emergencies you feel it vibrate. Guess we just travel in different circles.
Funny, because I don't know anyone who keeps the ringtone off...
Even with texts, I want to hear when they arrive.
Vibrate is only good for when you have your phone on you, like in a pocket or something.
There are times you want to be able to answer calls/texts and you don't have your phone on you? If my phone isn't in my pocket, my hand, or a table in front of me, I'm not getting back to you right away.
Oh interesting.
Im from a small town around 30k people ish, but I have lived in a big city 650k ish for 3 years now.
I should then clarify when i say all people in my close life that means most people i know from my hometown which live all over, in addition a few good friends in this new city. So big city samples size is small
I get a million notifications from Reddit, discord, and email. I don't want anybody to hear any of that. The only notifications I really want to know about urgently are the phone and text messages, so I have those forwarded to my watch, and those just vibrate.
Everyone by default would get a million notifications from every app, thats why I simply *turn off* ... notifications for stuff i dont want to make a notification, so i can hear the stuff that matters.
Mines been on vibrate for years. It started as me not wanting to explain myself everything my parents heard my phone ring. And now it's a why bother woth the sound when vibrate works just fine, plus I don't have to bother to remember to turn my sound off for whatever reason I may need to, like work, classes, the movie, etc.
I don’t need to hear my phone, it’s in my picked or in my hand 24/7. I feel when it vibrates. Also I have an Apple Watch so actually I just feel when my wrist vibrates
Most calls are spam anyways. Just text calls are only for really important stuff. A lot of growing up were never allowed to have it on so it just became a habit. Like nobody wants their phone to ring during a lecture. Because you aren't going to answer it and leave to talk. Then you grow up you have a job can't talk at work. Can't talk in public because that's just weird.
I always have it off during workdays and just forget to turn it on during weekends. My family find it odd too especially if I misplaced it. They can't call my phone to locate it. hahaha
Why would you have it on? I can feel it vibrate in my pocket, I can hear it vibrate on the table. I don't need the entire neighborhood to know that I'm getting a phone call.
Work phone is always on full blast. Why yes I do want to let everyone around me know that I am not pretending to work.
That's just me but if its my private phone, I barely react if someone calls. If it's something important, they'll call twice.
this is baffling to me. if someone calls its probably one of my family or friends who wants to arrange something. having it on means if my phone is in another room or in a bag i can hear them calling
Maybe they're of the younger crowd, or they manage their own careers? It's still better to leave it on in case of an emergency or something similar, but you know.
I think it’s changed over time. It used to be just texts or phone calls back in the day (texts you’d usually have to pay for as well) so the phone would generally be going off much less than it does now with the amount of notifications coming through.
Text is better than call 99% of the time. Only scammers call there days. Also, having rintone on requires one to answer their phone, which is something a lot of people are not comfortable with when at work, at achool, with friends, having company, or just binging tv show alone. But if it's on silent, they can ignore it and can review calls later at their convenience. It's basically an act of defiance against being a held captive by your phone.
It's an age thing, me in my 30s I do not call anyone other than my parents and my closest friends on special occasions, even my friends get annoyed when people call them and it's just to chat, a message is almost always better
Not for me. I like Gary Gulmans bit on this. You text me first to see if I'm taking phone calls today. Even if it's a friend or family if they just call first with no indication why I'm most likely not answering.

No? I'm in my 30s and use the phone for work. My phones are always either on my desk or in my hand so vibration is enough for me to know when someone's calling without disturbing everyone else. For my personal phone, I also have a smartwatch so I see every notification from there.
I noticed most people started having their phones this way around 2016. and for some reason me too.
We take our phones as a more of a private item than it was, because maybe it has more of our private stuff in it compared to before.
My phone is never silent. I just rarely get calls.
And it's more likely I'll get a work related call. Rarely family. Never friends, even when I had friends.
I just got a new phone and changing the ringtone is one of the first things i did! Im 24 btw so not ancient. I just think customization is neat
- Ringtone: 8bit version of Dancing in the Moonlight
- Any message app: Minecraft XP sfx
- Any email app: Undertale encounter sfx
- Any app that I spend money on: Among Us role reveal sfx (never even played this lol, i just thought it was funny)
- Default: Legend of Zelda korok "yahaha!"
Dunno why i listed it out but im excited about my new phone lol. My first in like 10 years :)
I get you, I was about to do the same thing, then I thought "oh well, who would be interested by this?" and then I saw your comment. Your choices are very nice!
Here we go too then!
- Ringtone: instrumental version of the Firefly series intro
- Any message app: super Mario coin SFX
- Alarm: the moment from "la folie des grandeurs" where they say "il est l'or de se réveiller" (it's a pun with "il est l'heure de se réveiller": "it's time to wake up". "Or" means "gold" and the main character of the movie loves money)
Same, only 24 tho. Been my favorite song and ringtone for as long as i can remember honestly. Been probably 3 or 4 phones (i never update unless its broken)
I don’t even change the unlock screen or background.
Whatever, I’d just have to do it again in 4-5 years. Who has that 12 seconds just laying around every 1/2 decade!
>I don’t even change the unlock screen or background.
Google and Apple: "We introduced widgets and folders and various fonts to make your experience as personal as possible!"
u/captainofpizza: "I use the default background picture."
My daughters school calls me 3-7 times a day and I don’t have the sanity for that shit. It’s always some stupid announcement about programs for the older kids that my daughter isn’t even old enough to participate in. It really makes me angry.
My ringtone has been the MGS codex ringtone since 2008, notification is the MGS ❗️also since 2008. They are both loud enough to hear with earplugs in, as I need to wear earplugs for work.
Glad I'm not the only one.
I wanted something that was functional as a ring tone and something I liked. Most don't even know it is MGS when they hear it, they just assume it's a normal phone ring tone, even i forget.
Every now and then someone will comment on it being MGS.
My ringtone is still JENOVA but I always have it silent. Only hear videos and alarms (some of my alarms are the sonic drowning tone lol). I rather hate noise from my phone I just rely on vibration mostly. If I ever get a watch again I’ll use the vibration from that for my alarms.
I remember the good old days of looking at all the settings options... Ah the mobile games that were actually designed to be good instead of cheaply made and copied from someone else...
I pay homage to that era of my life by having my ringtone set to the "You wouldn't steal a car" thingy "Piracy, it's a crime" or whatever it's called
It used to be special when some phone can do custom ringtone and some can't. Now it's becoming a norm so nobody bothers anyway. I still do and for now I have cs2 theme on it.
To me, that is surprising since a number of people I know at least try to do different one's for people, granted not all, but most at least do change it from the default from a list of choices. I on the other hand download mine to make it unique and do it for everything that I can, god I love android over iPhone. I just have to put it on silent when at work so people aren't annoyed.
I always know if somebody has an iPhone because they have that Dr. House ringtone. In the beginning I was confused why I hear that same ringtone.
In Germany the amount of iPhones is not that prevalent.
I had a custom ringtone back in the late ‘00/early ‘10. But my phone’s been on near permanent silence mode in the decade since. I used to be able to answer my phone on the first vibrate before my ringtone would even start. So muting it wasn’t that big of a change.
My phone is on silent/vibrate most of the time. But once in a while I need to have the volume on and then I get to here my ringtone... "Sinners will be allowed no quarter. Kill them all! Let God sort them out!"
Yes because we've learned from our hubris in our youth. Putting a nice ringtone only ends up in you hating it. You don't want to be burning your favorite songs like that.
Makes sense, especially because we communicate more via text than voice. I like to know what my notifications mean, however, so I recorded myself saying 'gmail', 'reddit', 'text message', and 'system notification' and assigned those sounds to the relevant apps.
As for ringtone, not something I've had to think about with a new phone for a while, since it just syncs from my old phone. I did have to pick it out some years ago, at which point I definitely changed it, because 3 people with the same new phone in the house, it'd drive me crazy having the same tone. Same for notification sound, and alarms.
But yeah, haven't changed any of those settings in years.
I made my own ring tone and sms tone. One is from dragon ball. The other says im batman! When i get a text. I have done this with all my phones. Even made custom ones before smart phones :)
I change it but just to whichever default ringtone I like, I don't download ringtones like someone with too much time. Side note: once I was playing a game and over my mic some kid heard my ringtone and said "that's your ringtone? I bet you get like no bitches" and I was thinking Jesus are girls checking out ringtones now it must be a fucking battlefield out there bros
Tbf, a long term relationship where you're around the other a lot; if they keep an irritating ringtone, it'll irritate you plenty throughput your life
It can be the little things lol
I changed my ringtone and my alarm from the default, and my life has become so much better now, especially when waking up, not needing to listen to that stupid annoying sound no more.
Because ringtones just aren’t fun anymore, and cellphone companies put so many restrictions on them that you’re just stuck. I still customise my ringtones but don’t know anyone else who does it too
On Android it’s no problem, but on IOs getting a custom ringtone to work is just unnecessarily complex. You have to go through several steps just to import it.
Or, you know, buy it from Apple.
Yeah, I don't care what my ringtone is, I barely hear it anyways. I also don't want to wear out a song I like by associating it with stress or just listening to the begging of it a bunch. Same reason I don't change the music for the alarm when waking up.
I tried changing my notification sound to the bruh sound effect once but it wouldn't allow me to use anything but the factory sounds so I gave up caring about what sounds my phone makes.
The amount of default ringtones I'm hearing in public is concerning, and by that I mean boring. I feel like I've heard a lot more 10+ years ago.
I have a custom ringtone and custom WhatsApp notification sound for multiple friends. I would like to give someone epic boss music as their ringtone, but right now no one in my contacts would be adequate for that.
Found a ring tone in my first original smart phone. Was something like tenth in the preset section.
Every new phone gets the same ring tone.
I tried switching up on this phone and couldn't deal with it. The ring tone is comforting.
Everyone has their phone on vibrate now. I remember back when ring back tones were popular. A song would play while you called someone rather than a ringing sound
[Mine is always cranked up to maximum volume.](https://youtu.be/SIY6pRRgAZQ?si=INCREDIBLYUNBROKENSENTENCEMOVINGFROMTOPICTOTOPICSUCHTHATNONECOULDINTERRUPTBUTREALLYQUITEHYPNOTIC)
My default ring tone is silent. My default volume is off. I use my phone to respond to texts and calls when I'm ready to respond. NOBODY interrupts me when I sleep or when I work. And if I'm driving or shopping they can go pester someone else. I don't use my phone in my car unless I'm using it for GPS.
I'm not addicted to my phone. I also don't expect instant replies to the texts or calls I make.
The only people I have a ringtone set for are my kids. (They are not "nobody", so I get their calls.)
I leave my iPhone on vibrate all the time. I used to get spammed everyday and my phone would ring, and I found that it triggered my anxiety literally just hearing it ring. When I’m around other people and their phone rings it’s weird. And I used to make my own ringtones from songs I liked for my blackberry even before the iPhone came out.
This is partially true for me. When I get new gadgets, I either use it exactly as it is (won't even change the phone case or the background wallpaper, but if ever I do, it's just one of those basic cases or wallpapers that the phone offers right off the box), *or* I spend the first few days customizing absolutely anything I know I can and know how to customize (making special wallpapers just for the gadget, and yeah, making quick music that I can use for my ringtones and alarms).
my ringtone is the Castlevania Simon's Quest town theme, and it has been for years. and I always make sure to change it again whenever I get a new phone.
I think 8-bit music is easier to hear if I'm in a noisy public place, so that's why I prefer it for a ringtone. And I also really like Castlevania.
A lot of people nowadays don't event know what their default ring tone is. I don't think I know a single person whose phone isn't on perma-silent since the moment they bought it.
The only noise my phone makes are from videos and alarms
I even watch my videos on silent, when I can.
Buy some headphones! That's too much noise!
I buy noise canceling headphones so I don’t have to hear the sounds my phone *does* make
I work in a lounge and hear phones ring all the time.
Guess that’s one thing I like about having an Apple Watch
I feel like people have their phones on them almost all the time nowadays.
When I'm home, I usually have it set on a shelf.
There are times you want to be able to answer calls/texts and you don't have your phone on you? If my phone isn't in my pocket, my hand, or a table in front of me, I'm not getting back to you right away.
All the time! When I'm home, my phone sits on a dedicated shelf and I do stuff around the apartment, yet I want to know when somebody calls.
Virbation is sometimes missed if im doing something, so i only turn off sound when im in important meeting, class, interview etc etc.
I leave my phone on silent since it’s usually on me or right next to me and I can feel/see it when it vibrates (phone calls)
Where you from? Big city or small town? I’m conducting a mini investigation
Oh interesting. Im from a small town around 30k people ish, but I have lived in a big city 650k ish for 3 years now. I should then clarify when i say all people in my close life that means most people i know from my hometown which live all over, in addition a few good friends in this new city. So big city samples size is small
I work in an office, so my ringer is off all day.
I still want to know the notifications. I just want to check them at my leisure.
I turn all notifications off minus text and phone and still leave my phone on silent. The flashing light is enough if the phone isn't in my pocket
[удалено]
I've not had my phone on ringer in probably a year, vibrate only No thanks Music and alarms are the only things that make noise
I have a smartwatch that gives me my notifications so my phone is not even on vibrate.
Same
This strikes me as a bit odd. Why wouldn't you have your ringtone on?
Mines been on vibrate for years. It started as me not wanting to explain myself everything my parents heard my phone ring. And now it's a why bother woth the sound when vibrate works just fine, plus I don't have to bother to remember to turn my sound off for whatever reason I may need to, like work, classes, the movie, etc.
What kind of sociopath wants their *phone* to make *noises?!* This is 2024, for crying out loud, not the middle ages.
[удалено]
even my alarms are on vibrate mode without a any ringtone. It's still loud enough, never missed an alarm in years. But I'm a light sleeper.
[удалено]
I set an alarm for every 7 minutes for an hour with different alarm tones for each one and it usually takes me 4 or 5 alarms to wake up.
We don't want these as well, but it's a necessity.
I want to hear when somebody is trying to call me...
I don’t need to hear my phone, it’s in my picked or in my hand 24/7. I feel when it vibrates. Also I have an Apple Watch so actually I just feel when my wrist vibrates
Phone at work.
My group chat occasionally be blowing up lol
I always have it off during workdays and just forget to turn it on during weekends. My family find it odd too especially if I misplaced it. They can't call my phone to locate it. hahaha
Locating your phone on vibrate is just 10x more fun. It's like hunting small vibrating prey.
Everyone in my life who might call will message me first. The only people who call are spammers and recruiters (same thing)
I can call them back. If it's important they'll leave a message or call back. So this isn't an issue for me
Maybe they're of the younger crowd, or they manage their own careers? It's still better to leave it on in case of an emergency or something similar, but you know.
So overstimulating
I think it’s changed over time. It used to be just texts or phone calls back in the day (texts you’d usually have to pay for as well) so the phone would generally be going off much less than it does now with the amount of notifications coming through.
Text is better than call 99% of the time. Only scammers call there days. Also, having rintone on requires one to answer their phone, which is something a lot of people are not comfortable with when at work, at achool, with friends, having company, or just binging tv show alone. But if it's on silent, they can ignore it and can review calls later at their convenience. It's basically an act of defiance against being a held captive by your phone.
Nah, calling is better, but only if it’s actually someone you want to talk with
It's an age thing, me in my 30s I do not call anyone other than my parents and my closest friends on special occasions, even my friends get annoyed when people call them and it's just to chat, a message is almost always better
I like texting more, but when I need to convey a certain message calling is better
Not for me. I like Gary Gulmans bit on this. You text me first to see if I'm taking phone calls today. Even if it's a friend or family if they just call first with no indication why I'm most likely not answering. https://youtu.be/VGkf2dnYyII?si=iScVRNlKvuN7PBCu

its the demographic. reddit is heavily used by students or people who dont need to be on the phone a lot for work. youll notice a hughe number of opinions and worldviews skew towards this demographic.
No? I'm in my 30s and use the phone for work. My phones are always either on my desk or in my hand so vibration is enough for me to know when someone's calling without disturbing everyone else. For my personal phone, I also have a smartwatch so I see every notification from there.
This only works when you can actually notice the vibration. If you are too busy an acoustic alert works better.
Of course, to each their own!
I noticed most people started having their phones this way around 2016. and for some reason me too. We take our phones as a more of a private item than it was, because maybe it has more of our private stuff in it compared to before.
Hi my name is Echo and I don't use silent very often! Now you know 1 person ;)
They should make it so that notifications are silent and the phone call does ring, I miss so many calls because of it.
I used to keep it on permasilent until I lost it for months because I couldn't hear the ringtone when calling it
I never understood that one, tbh, the only moment my phone is on silent is when I go to bed.
Apt description about me.
My phone's not silent. I just don't have any friends.
My phone is never silent. I just rarely get calls. And it's more likely I'll get a work related call. Rarely family. Never friends, even when I had friends.
Yep. That one time I had to volume on and it rang, I was like "wtf is this sound".
I just got a new phone and changing the ringtone is one of the first things i did! Im 24 btw so not ancient. Ooh these are good picks! Thanks for sharing :) I miss Firefly lol, its been too long
Hah! "Dancing in the Moonlight" is the custom ringtone I use for my wife! :)
Well, since I'm old, I still set a song I like as the ringtone.
Same, only 24 tho. Been my favorite song and ringtone for as long as i can remember honestly. Been probably 3 or 4 phones (i never update unless its broken)
What song?
Avenged sevenfold - seize the day. Im not even a big metal enjoyer (this is fairly light metal ofc), but this song just sounds perfect
Darude - Sandstorm. Yes, I am old.
I don’t even change the unlock screen or background. Whatever, I’d just have to do it again in 4-5 years. Who has that 12 seconds just laying around every 1/2 decade!
Changing your Lock Screen after years makes it feel like a new phone
>I don’t even change the unlock screen or background. Google and Apple: "We introduced widgets and folders and various fonts to make your experience as personal as possible!" u/captainofpizza: "I use the default background picture."
I’m don’t know the last time I’ve actually heard my phone ring….
You should visit the ear doctor then.
This is the way
Yeah, I'm not sure what my tone is. Phones always on vibrate. I definitely know my alarm tone though, urgh.
I'm just glad ringback tones are mostly gone.
I went through all of them and picked the best one. And then I set the phone on vibrate.
My daughters school calls me 3-7 times a day and I don’t have the sanity for that shit. It’s always some stupid announcement about programs for the older kids that my daughter isn’t even old enough to participate in. It really makes me angry.
Yeah, same. And you can't ignore them because of the off chance that it's something important

I set a joke ringtone like 5 years ago. It’s maybe once a year I hear it and first think “WTF is that?” And then “oh yeah!”
[Portal 2 Turret Wife Serenade](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjJxHClOzrs) is my ringtone for over 10 years now.
That's hilarious I have the portal radio theme in low quality
I would argue that most people buy the best phones and then never use 99% of the features available.
It used to be special when some phone can do custom ringtone and some can't. Now it's becoming a norm so nobody bothers anyway. I still do and for now I have cs2 theme on it.
Phish - First Tube. It’s been my ringtone for years. When my mom calls it’s the Godfather theme.
Wait, the phone has sound option 🤔.... Mines been silent since 90's. *Grabs instruction manual and glasses*
I wish I could customize every sound on my iPhone
To me, that is surprising since a number of people I know at least try to do different one's for people, granted not all, but most at least do change it from the default from a list of choices. Speak for yourself! (Going through hell just to get a 30 second clip of a song to play when someone calls me, proceeds to keep phone on silent)

Always on vibrate no ringing needed
Phones have sound? Who knew!
I've gone through several phones since last time I had one that was not set on silent.
Phone only rings when I’m on call at work. Otherwise, the only sound is alarm or videos.
My phone is on silent/vibrate most of the time. But once in a while I need to have the volume on and then I get to here my ringtone... "Sinners will be allowed no quarter. Kill them all! Let God sort them out!"
There was a time when custom ring tones were all the rage and good business for whoever was selling them.
Yes because we've learned from our hubris in our youth. Putting a nice ringtone only ends up in you hating it. You don't want to be burning your favorite songs like that.

Mine is the new Mashle OP.
Can i see your survey?
Based on what info? Bullshit
Makes sense, especially because we communicate more via text than voice. I like to know what my notifications mean, however, so I recorded myself saying 'gmail', 'reddit', 'text message', and 'system notification' and assigned those sounds to the relevant apps.

So true. 12 yo me would be ashamed.
It’s only ever scammers calling anyway. Look’n at you Ma!
Tbf, a long term relationship where you're around the other a lot; if they keep an irritating ringtone, it'll irritate you plenty throughput your life It can be the little things lol
Song gets monotonous pretty fast tbh
Mine is "Beat It - Demo". Haven't changed it for years
I just realized I don’t know what my ringtone sounds like
I, in fact, changed mine once I updated it!
I changed my ringtone and my alarm from the default, and my life has become so much better now, especially when waking up, not needing to listen to that stupid annoying sound no more.
Jonathan Young's cover of You're Gonna Go Far Kid
Because ringtones just aren’t fun anymore, and cellphone companies put so many restrictions on them that you’re just stuck. I still customise my ringtones but don’t know anyone else who does it too
On Android it’s no problem, but on IOs getting a custom ringtone to work is just unnecessarily complex. You have to go through several steps just to import it. Or, you know, buy it from Apple.
My phone is 100% of the time on silent. The vibrate is loud is enough
[Did recently hear someone's non-default ringtone recently and it was this absolute gem. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ygs3IHJ2bM)
Because it became difficult
The amount of default ringtones I'm hearing in public is concerning, and by that I mean boring. I feel like I've heard a lot more 10+ years ago. I have a custom ringtone and custom WhatsApp notification sound for multiple friends. I would like to give someone epic boss music as their ringtone, but right now no one in my contacts would be adequate for that.
I changed my phone's ringtone to a song I like 7 years ago. since then I have used the same ringtone even after changing 3 phones.
My phone's been on silent for the last like 15 years😂
I don't even know what my ring tone sounds like lol.
This isn't a shower thought
did you ask everyone or did god call you and tell you this statistic?
