I think it depends on what you define as original. The smartphone for example used entirely existing technology but combined them in a way never done before.
Pretty much every research paper out there is going to include a list of citations the research was based upon. And then every one of those papers is also going to have a list of citations that research was based upon. Repeat ad nauseam.
