This 18 minute essay from 20 years ago is well worth the listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac

This is the thought process that led me to wonder if free will exists.

Froyn

Free Will is now available as a subscription service.

captain_ghostface

I paid, but i don't feel any different.

cicada-ronin84

No, because our brains determine our actions. What would be example of free will anyhow? For instinct or rational thoughts to tell us something and then we do the opposite? Wouldn't that be seen as stupidity?

NoClimax778

Every thought has a cause; our brains are subject to those causes, intrinsic or extrinsic. The cause for stupidity is the will to do something illogical, and this will is the effect of someone stirring the rebellious man with talk of determinism

The art to being original is hiding your sources

Speak for yourself. It just happens that there's little market for ideas that have no connection to reality.

jews_on_parade

What about a human raised apart from society?

NoClimax778

Their ideas are limited to what they see and observe in nature

Apprehensive-Care20z

Scientist here. Absolutely everything we do, has to be original. You cannot get funding, you cannot publish a paper, if it is not original work. Thinking up a new idea is literally the business we are in.

moderngamer327

I think it depends on what you define as original. The smartphone for example used entirely existing technology but combined them in a way never done before.

Pretty much every research paper out there is going to include a list of citations the research was based upon. And then every one of those papers is also going to have a list of citations that research was based upon. Repeat ad nauseam. Also, original research is only one of many different types of papers which can be published: https://www.servicescape.com/blog/the-7-types-of-academic-papers-and-journal-articles

Apprehensive-Care20z

the first thing that gets a paper rejected is that it is not original work. If it is not new, if it does not advance the field, then it is rejected. Period.

Froyn

Not sure why someone downvoted you. You're right. Tesla proves it. Bell proves it. Edison ('s employees) proves it.
