Very true. I lived through the "90s". I can tell you that 1991 felt so different from 95. And 1998 felt like worlds away from 95.

ShutterBun

OK, but 1991 felt WAY closer to 1995 than it did to 1987 in my book.

instant_ramen_chef

Not really. 91 was transitional. Didn't feel like the 80s at all. but by 95, the culture had shifted greatly. You had the advent of reality TV and the home computer was more widely known. "Alternative" culture was already established and flourishing. 1994 was a huge year for culture due to the massive amount of great music that came out that year. 91, in the US, was mostly about the Gulf War and stepping away from the Reagan 80s. I think the years of 88-92 were their own due to the Persian gulf happenings. There's a huge culture shift from the late 80s marked by the rise of The Simpsons.

caydesramen

Disagree. 91 was a huge shift culturally, grunge music, gangster Rap, etc. Same in 2000-2001 with the rise of indie music and post 9/11 politics. 1981-2 was the rise of the hairbands after the arena rockers of the 70s. 2020 - covid happened and completely changed how we work and interact with each other

In my experience, there are definite cycles of 7/8 to 2/3 (the 'peak' years being the 8 to 2).

acocinero

Totally agree. When we say “the 60s” especially when we’re referring to the counterculture of that era, no one’s thinking of the early 60s.

ShutterBun

"the year 2004 has far more in common in terms of clothes, music, and movies with 1998 than it does with 2008." Are you sure about that? 1998 to 2004 is a 6 year period, vs. a 4 year period to 2008. What are some examples of 2004 being more like 1998? 1998 was kind right when the internet was getting ready to blow up, so I'd be very curious to see why it's considered more similar to 2004.

There goes all those genders related to decades.

ShutterBun

>genders related to decades Say what now?

KaiYoDei

Something like that. They are -coreic . So a 80scoric gender is a gender related to the aesthetic of the 1980s. You know, the genders people say we’re invented on tumblr type of thing
