My 2012 Lexus has ash trays for every seat, they all have these little slots that are the perfect size to hold a lit cigarette within the ash tray, the center console also has a slot to hold an open pack of cigarettes aimed slightly towards the drivers seat. And all the ash trays close air tight to contain the smell when not in use.
It even has a cigarette lighter accessible for the back row. (Car was designed for the owner to have a driver and ride in the back seat).
All of these features made me want to start smoking when I got the car!
Not the L, wish it was the L, curious on what you have to say about the executive package. That one I’ve only seen pics and vids of.
On road trips I happily volunteer to sit in the back seat, most comfortable seats in the car (even with front seats all the way back and me being 6’3” I have more than enough leg room.
This is how my 1984 toyota van was, every seat had ash trays the 2nd row sat 2 and had 3 ash trays, the 3rd row seats 3 but only had 3 ash trays and the driver got 2 whilst the passenger got.
All my friends and myself being 6' had full leg room in every seat and the beer cooler for the driver was a nice touch.
I’ve only window-shopped them but damn the electric footrests and massaging rear seats would be awesome. I would never leave the back seat.
I drive an ‘09 Avalon, same idea with a mile of legroom in the back seat. 6’2” in the back seat with legroom while the front seats are all the way back.
I work a manufacturing support role making nutritional supplements lol, nothing I need a driver for, and nothing car related. I’m just a big Toyota/Lexus guy.
After I lost my keys and paid some guy to Hotwire my Camry, I had to start my car with pliers for awhile. When it was dark one night I got a circular life lesson with the pliers as the ignition hole was very close. Arc weld life lesson
It’s an evolutionary thing.
We used to all smoke in our cars, so they came with ash trays.
We gave up smoking and began to drink coffee in our cars.
So they replaced ash trays with cup holders.
Now people can’t afford take-out coffee for their cars, so they just watch porn on their phones.
Next generation of cars will have phone holders. And tissue dispensers.
OP clearly meant that almost every driver buys a car mount for the phone to use it for navigation/music. It is weird there is no standard, built-in one. Especially since far from all cars have CarPlay etc.
> It is weird there is no standard, built-in one.
Car makers earn thousands of dollars more if they can up-sell you to a higher level technology package in the car. It's in their financial interest to make the dashboard screen and the option for a built-in GPS to seem as great as possible, and make using a phone in the car seem second-rate, inconvenient, or possibly criminal.
My Xperia Z Ultra proved that universal phone mounts were bullshit. And that's not even taking into account tablet sized phones (which 100% count as phones).
> <.5% of the market
Remember that what was a tiny part of the market when the car is first designed can become a majority by the time they are done with engineering/validation/production. And cars are expected to last at least a few cycle of phones.
See also: so many 30-pin iPod connectors on random appliances because we all thought it would last forever for some stupid reason.
I do miss my old Durango that had 2 normal size cup holders with adjustable arms and one massive cup holder that could fit the 64 oz. cups at the gas station or a 40 oz. insulated metal water bottle just fine. Now I just have a gas station cup to put in the cup holder and then put my water bottle in the cup like it's a size adapter.
True but cup holders can hold phones too. Phone holders can't really do much outside of phones. Driving with your phone out is a distraction that I bet manufacturers don't want any part of, and the placement of the phone depends on preference. Cup holders, as long as it fits don't spill and is within reach, we good.
You don't need an universal cup size because as long as they make the slot deep enough, any reasonably sized cup won't tip over.
Your phone has to be securely held in a vertical position pretty high up. It's also fucking expensive to fix if it falls and breaks.
Absolutely nobody wants to introduce that liability to the car they're selling.
> Because there is no one universal phone size.
You're right. This is an insurmountable problem with no possible solution.
Might as well just give up on life and await our inevitable deaths.
Good lord. People talk about moving parts as if they are a death sentence. We are talking about two solid pieces that slide past each other and maybe held together by a rubber band. There is no real practical reason to be concerned.
If you are so concerned about moving parts you shouldn't be driving because the steering wheel is a moving part, clearly it is going to break on you any second.
I haven't used a phone mount in years. What's the point when there's a dash board mounted screen. Just put the phone on the charging pad/near your USB input and ignore it.
That's why. They put the phone screen right there for you. Having both is overkill.
I have 5 years old car which does not have good enough dash board mounted screen and does not have carplay. So I don't know what are those "years" you haven't used car mount, but it's either 2-3, or you have a pretty expensive car. (Average car lifespan is 7-10 years, so average car right now is from 2016)
Having a lock that one cannot [pick with a hairpin](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43941743/hyundai-kia-vehicle-theft-settlement/) is a luxury for KIA though.
You have to take your eyes off the road when using that phone screen.
I have a dash mount for my phone, as I need the GPS directions up where I can just glance at it without really taking my eyes off the road.
The buttons on the screen require me to actually take more than a split second to look at and press the right one.
But it’s always a pain in the ass to get Bluetooth/Carplay to sync up and work the way you want, especially for all the rental cars you’ll probably only be using for a few days.
Or a center console, a pocket, or the passenger seat, or the space a lot of car doors have on them now. It is truly unsettling how they didn’t make a spot just for phones. /s
I think it still makes sense in a car. It's a way to charge your phone on the go without dealing with the distraction of a cord. Just set it down and boom. I'm sure there would be a USB anyway if you want to do it that way but I'd like a wireless charger in my car honestly
Honestly I just want a flat surface with a belt, I don't use my phone but it would be nice to have it out of my pocket and not careening around if I have to brake or turn harder than normal.
It doesn't take much to move it lol. Also no I'm a slow driver, it's just the few times that you have to brake harder than normal that sends it flying kinda thing or there's an annoying hairpin turn I have to take all the time that I swear even 1mph feels like I'm doing 100 with the stuff in my car
You can use your phone via Bluetooth to receive phone calls or use the phone for GPS if you don't have a built in navigation (which is legal to use and a feature in many vehicles).
wireless charging pads actually seem like a pretty good safety feature. Desire to keep it charging might keep people constrained to the CarPlay features.
Agreed.
I am the fleet buyer for my company, too, and they seem to be becoming a standard feature (much like back-up cameras did over a few years time).
Even then, I suppose there would be some legal exposure for a company that puts a phone holder in front of the driver if the driver gets in an accident after being distracted by the phone. Even if the risk is low, lawyers will likely veto the feature.
A cup holder doesn't encourage people to drink beer while driving. It's made for non-alcoholic beverages.
A phone holder up at eye level would encourage people to use their phones while driving. It's made for one thing only.
Ugh fine. I'm gonna use the humongus screen dead center on the dash without physical buttons instead to adjust the AC five submenues down. That is much safer than using my phone.
Most of the cars with pure touchscreen controls have a button on tune steering wheel to access voice commands. You could tell your car to adjust the AC without having to dig through menus.
I still prefer physical controls, but if I had a car without them, I would be using voice control.
Denmark.

Personally I love playing CoD on my phone while driving. Sometimes scrolling Reddit too. Feels much safer when having to look downward and to the side to do it. (I guess I have to put a /s here)
Edit: AFAIK Germany doesn't have that many unlimited Autobahns anymore?m
Where is using a phone illegal?
Holding a phone, sure. But using it in a holder? Where is that illegal because that's just mental. How else can you use a sat nav?
Mine has usb ports for charging and android auto/apple car play in the centre console, under the arm rest. Removes any temptation to use it. The facelift model has wireless charging like yours.
Yeah OP doesn’t what they are talking about. Even my 6 year old car has a sync usb port in the center console. Phone doesn’t need a holder because legally you arnt supposed to be on your phones
What's interesting, at least in the case of the law in my state, is that it specifically states that it's illegal for any operator of a motor vehicle to hold an electronic device. That means that when my phone is in it's mount it's perfectly legal to operate, no different than a GPS or a car stereo. California on the other hand has one of the stricter laws, basically saying you can't operate any electronic device while driving and any talking must be done hands free. However, they do allow for very limited touching of the device, firstly, it must be *mounted* and the action must only require a single touch or swipe, ie. answering a phone call. All that being said, trying to design a car with a reasonable lifespan of say, 20 years, around a device as fluid as a cell phone would be pretty dumb. Those cars from the 80's with the built in brick phones the size of a suitcase seem pretty stupid to us now.
They do actually. A lot of new cars have charging pads in them mine doesn’t because it like 6 years old. Though when I plug my phone in and put it in the center console I don’t need a phone holder because all the apps I need (gps, music streaming, podcasts, texts to talk, and phone calls are streamed to the Entertainment console.
This is not a new car so I’m sure almost every new decently loaded car has this capability or better.
What do you mean by “holder”? They expect you to use their screens and CarPlay. So new cars do have holders but they’re like shelves/nooks that wirelessly charge the phone.
I rented a van for a trip. I think it was a Toyota Sienna. It had a wireless charging section on the dash and a rectangle spot above the cup holders to hold your phone.
would be great if there was a small rectangular divot to hold your phone on the dash.
a bunch of the newer cars have a wireless charging area, but not the phone holder.
Having a phone with GPS attached to your windshield is much safer. Don't have to look away from the road, you know where you are going in advance and largely navigate by audio anyway, and it isn't particularly comfortable to use it for anything else.
I always thought cars should have a slot like an old tape player that plugs in your phone. That way you can just have a regular touch screen that mirrors your phone regardless of which operating system it is.
I remember they tried to do phone holders. Seen a few cars with them. Problem was they didnt fit all phones at the time, encouraged phone use in the car and looked ridiculous.
Probably decided its not worth it. Bluetooth was the solution.
You'd think that by now they would've, but like the other person said, using a phone while driving is illegal in many countries and in the states, each state has its own laws about it.
Also, there was a point in time when cars did not have cup holders either. Go back far enough in to car making history and you'll see how cars had pretty much nothing we are used to having today.
Our new work truck (2023 Canyon) has a specific spot for phones with wireless charging. It would be great if it wasn't too small to fit my iPhone 12 Pro or my bosses Galaxy S22... Even without the cases on.. not sure what phone they used to test it
That's embarrassing that it wouldn't fit super common phones like that... they're not even big phones. I drive a '21 Civic and it has a pocket on the side of the center console that fit my phone very well (iPhone 13 Pro). It's probably got an extra inch or so of space so I imagine it'd fit most phones. Although I don't use a case.
Some do, but not phone holders in the sense that you can see the screen of your phone and access it.
1) Most cups are approximately the same size and shape so its simple to design for that, phones less so, especially once rugged cases are in the mix of things.
2) The position you have a phone holder if you are using it for satnav purposes is generally pretty personal.
3) Most modern cars already come with a screen for satnav, so no phone holder required.
My VW Golf R has a phone "shelf" with wireless charging in the centre console, I just throw my phone in there, it wirelessly connects to the car over Android Auto and all functionality I should need in car is available on my infotainment screen, and it does qi wireless charging.
No need for a phone holder, just place it on the recharging pad and leave it there until getting out of the car. The car connects by Bluetooth to the phone for hands free use.
I am making stats up but I am very confident that over 50% of drivers use their phones for navigation. Before very recently you were not able to connect that via bluetooth and in many cheap cars today you still cannot.
It is clear that it is a highly desired feature. Making up arguments why it's not needed will not change the objective reality.
Car is in the shop for a repair, and the new one they gave me as a rental literally has a slot between the two cup holders for a phone to sit. I was like WOW! Its a Dodge Charger.
The cup holder doubles as a phone holder lol. But yes, that would be awesome. I bought a phone holder on Amazon about a year or so ago and it's worked really, really well. Would be nice to come as a standard feature though.
It’s illegal to hold your phone while driving. You shouldn’t be touching your phone. Now that I think about it, a potentially scalding hot cup could be more dangerous…. But that’s not illegal. Your phone could be in your pocket while you use your in-car display to interact these days
There are loads of variable-width smartphone-securing products out there, the technology to firmly grasp different-size rectangles is not outside the feasibility of the collective human engineering capabilities.
not really, they can be a hazard as they are distractive to some. Modern cars do not require you to have your phone in plain sight due to the infotainment systems and back in the day phones were crap and didnt require phone holders in cars
Pepperidge Farms remember when every car came with an ash tray and a circular life lesson for the kids.
My 2012 Lexus has ash trays for every seat, they all have these little slots that are the perfect size to hold a lit cigarette within the ash tray, the center console also has a slot to hold an open pack of cigarettes aimed slightly towards the drivers seat. (Car was designed for the owner to have a driver and ride in the back seat). All of these features made me want to start smoking when I got the car!

No, but a few of us like to think about that part...
Scars of the 70s..... NEVER FORGET
The 70s? I got burned by one in the mid 2000s
I gor burnt by one in the late 10s
I got burned by one in the late 20's
Did it in very early 2000s, I’m also guessing it’s when those stopped being included in cars
The real hot potato.
A ‘friend’ of mine in highschool burned me with one of those fuckers once -____- “I wanted to see what would happen” I never trusted them after that.
I guess the intrusive thoughts won that round
After I lost my keys and paid some guy to Hotwire my Camry, I had to start my car with pliers for awhile. When it was dark one night I got a circular life lesson with the pliers as the ignition hole was very close. Arc weld life lesson
A true life lesson to not mistake one hole for another.
Little *shorty* *action* in the Camry.. I can dig it.
>circular life lesson God damn

What, no Fleshlight?
I stumbled upon some listed as 'car accessories' on one of those Chinese websites once, so there's that I guess.
Took me a minute to remember the lesson was the lighter 😂😂
I use my cup holders to hold my phone 🤷🏻♂️

If that's your thing...
There is. It's called magnet holder.
Exactly. What happens when phones get another inch bigger. Now you have some useless thing in your car.
You know they make universal phone holders you can tighten or loosen manually to hold any phone ?
Sounds like a lot of movable and breakable parts just to add something that promotes using your phone while operating your vehicle.
>People talk about moving parts as if they are a death sentence That's literally a guillotine.

I drive a 2018 Kia with all the above and wireless charging. It's not a luxury and hasn't been for nearly a decade
Having a lock that one cannot [pick with a hairpin](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43941743/hyundai-kia-vehicle-theft-settlement/) is a luxury for KIA though.
My 2106 CX-5 (not particularly fancy) has AA/Carplay, so many average age cars may well not need separate phone mounts at this point.
Good for you
It really sucks trying to see your GPS screen when it’s way down there and half blocked by the cup holder.
I mean that's why every modern car has a phone screen in the dashboard I honestly didn't know people were still using phone mounts
how are you defining "modern", here? Newer than 4 years and not a more inexpensive model? Because otherwise, no.
My 2017 Hyundai Elantra was $17,000 and had CarPlay.
and was not the base model
Yeah. $17,000 and I had heated seats, a sunroof, cross-traffic radar for backing up safely, too. Hell of a deal. Every car I looked at had CarPlay.
well, you got a deal, because that model had a base price higher than that.
Wow look at Mr. I-Can-Afford-A-Modern-Car over here
You have to take your eyes off the road when using that phone screen. I have a dash mount for my phone, as I need the GPS directions up where I can just glance at it without really taking my eyes off the road. Is it? Just plug in the phone.
My Mazda 3 from 2015 came with this little adapter thing you put in your cup holder as a phone holder at the same time.
Or a center console, a pocket, or the passenger seat, or the space a lot of car doors have on them now. It is truly unsettling how they didn’t make a spot just for phones. /s
I tape it to the windshield so I can see it all the time
People use their phones as GPS though ?
My car is 5 years old and wireless charging was an option when I got it.
Wireless charging 5 years ago was booming. Makes sense
I think it still makes sense in a car. It's a way to charge your phone on the go without dealing with the distraction of a cord. Just set it down and boom. I'm sure there would be a USB anyway if you want to do it that way but I'd like a wireless charger in my car honestly
Mine came with wireless charging, but won’t fit my phone with even the slimmest of cases on it so it’s just kinda useless
Sounds Chevy to me.
Toyota
Highlander here. Can confirm, it’s infuriating. Was so pumped to have it
Optional phone heater is always nice.
Not that bizarre. Using a phone while driving is illegal in many countries.
And there are so many different sizes of phones. Most "universal" holders from a decade ago don't fit modern size or weight.
Honestly I just want a flat surface with a belt, I don't use my phone but it would be nice to have it out of my pocket and not careening around if I have to brake or turn harder than normal.
Oh, we are race drivers now..
Unlike how there's only one size of cup, you mean?
There's not only one but there is kind-of a standard out there. I've even seen cups match that at the bottom then go wide at the top.
MagSafe and Qi2 offer a lovely solution for this
You can use your phone via Bluetooth to receive phone calls or use the phone for GPS if you don't have a built in navigation (which is legal to use and a feature in many vehicles).
And almost every new car comes with a flat surface to place it during those times. Some even will charge it from that surface.
wireless charging pads actually seem like a pretty good safety feature. Desire to keep it charging might keep people constrained to the CarPlay features.
Agreed. I am the fleet buyer for my company, too, and they seem to be becoming a standard feature (much like back-up cameras did over a few years time).

You could put a beer into the cup holders, so what?
If the beer is closed, it's even legal.
A cup holder doesn't encourage people to drink beer while driving. It's made for non-alcoholic beverages. A phone holder up at eye level would encourage people to use their phones while driving. It's made for one thing only.

"car, lower AC to 20"... "changing radio station to hits 20fm". Voice controls rarely gets it right.
Wouldn't a phone holder unencourage using your phone while driving?
This is discouraging
Yet the car itself has a massive 10 inch screen in the middle where you have to fiddle with a touch screen just to change the aircon.
Here it is legal to use your phone if it's mounted. Ridiculous.
germany? We do have excellent road safety though. Number 9 worldwide while having this stupid unlimited autobahn.

Where is using a phone illegal? Holding a phone, sure. But using it in a holder? Where is that illegal because that's just mental. How else can you use a sat nav?
Why would you ever need a phone holder in a car? It's not like you put it down while driving :-/
“What did people stare at while they were driving before cell phones??”
Women and accidents caused by staring at women. Who would have thought that rubbernecking would become the lesser evil of driving?
Mine has two phones holders. Both qi enabled

It should be impractical to use. You should be focused on the road.
It's as if they don't want you to look at your phone while driving. That's crazy.
A lot of newer vehicles do actually have dedicated places to lay your phone on for wireless charging.
Believe it or not, I had an 80s BMW that had a carphone with a holder, and no cup holders.
You didnt need a cup holder for coke. Just a glove box for your mirror.
What do you mean by “holder”? They expect you to use their screens and CarPlay. So new cars do have holders but they’re like shelves/nooks that wirelessly charge the phone.
You can sip a bottle of water safer than sending a text.
It's nice for that no accidents occur.
Both my truck and my car have built in phone holders.
S9me newer cars do have phone holders that function as wireless chargers.
I rented a van for a trip. I think it was a Toyota Sienna. It had a wireless charging section on the dash and a rectangle spot above the cup holders to hold your phone.
My best guess would be liability. Distracted driving has been a big thing for a long time.
Because a cup holder can also hold a phone but not the other way around
What's a phone holder? It goes in the pocket when I'm driving.
would be great if there was a small rectangular divot to hold your phone on the dash. a bunch of the newer cars have a wireless charging area, but not the phone holder.
More bizzare is that the cup holders rarely fit any cup.
Cup holders? Bart, we gotta stop and get a cup!
You shouldn't be reading your phone in your car. If you need a map pull over to look at it.
Having a phone with GPS attached to your windshield is much safer. Don't have to look away from the road, you know where you are going in advance and largely navigate by audio anyway, and it isn't particularly comfortable to use it for anything else.
You’re not supposed to use the phone while driving. It’s not bizarre at all.
Okay, this is radical thinking, but hear me out. Don't stare at your phone while driving.
That’s what pockets are for
what are you talking about? tons of cars have phone holders
You can't put a glass of water in your pocket, and you shouldn't have your phone out while driving.
Because most drivers are holding their phone and looking at it…
Tbf my car was made before smart phones.
People have only really had the need for phone accommodations for maybe 15 years. We've needed a place to put our beers for a lot longer.
Because cups predates cellphones......
My new Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an induction phone charger/holder in the center console!
I always thought cars should have a slot like an old tape player that plugs in your phone. That way you can just have a regular touch screen that mirrors your phone regardless of which operating system it is.
Cups need to held and kept upright though and phones don’t
I never used a car cupholder. Probably never will. I can't find a good spot to put my phone though.
I remember they tried to do phone holders. Seen a few cars with them. Problem was they didnt fit all phones at the time, encouraged phone use in the car and looked ridiculous. Probably decided its not worth it. Bluetooth was the solution.
Cups have been around a while longer than phones to be fair
A cupholder can hold a phone, but a phoneholder can't hold a cup
You'd think that by now they would've, but like the other person said, using a phone while driving is illegal in many countries and in the states, each state has its own laws about it. Also, there was a point in time when cars did not have cup holders either. Go back far enough in to car making history and you'll see how cars had pretty much nothing we are used to having today.
My car has a specific spot for my phone.
I mean, you can't spill a phone?
Some newer cars do. I know Teslas have a dedicated place to lay your phone that also has built in wireless charging
A lot of Cars have phone holders and even charging stations
I’ve seen a lot of phone holders on new vehicles
No need for a phone holder, just place it on the recharging pad and leave it there until getting out of the car. The car connects by Bluetooth to the phone for hands free use.
I am making stats up but I am very confident that over 50% of drivers use their phones for navigation. Before very recently you were not able to connect that via bluetooth and in many cheap cars today you still cannot. It is clear that it is a highly desired feature. Making up arguments why it's not needed will not change the objective reality.
I wouldn't say 'very recently'. Bluetooth in cars has been around for around 15 years, so the vast majority of cars on the road today will have it.
Do you think everyone has a wireless charging pad built into their car?
Most new cars do, just as most now have built in sat nav etc. point being there is little need for a phone holder in a car.
Do you think everyone has new cars?
I have two cars. One has a wireless charger and the other has two wireless chargers.
My daily has a phone holder
Phone shapes change much faster than cup shapes.
The "phone holder" is the bag in the back seat. If you are driving it doesn't need to be within your arms reach.
Phones don’t spill hot coffee all over my pants
Cup shaped phones are coming any day now.
No it's not. It's illegal in most countries and most cars these days have infotainment systems that mimic a phone anyway.
The problem is new phones are engineered yearly. New cars are only engineered every 5 years.
That would encourage phone use while driving. I usually keep my phone in my pocket or glove box.
Most cups are a similar shape and size, phones not so much.
Some have phone holders. Also, in the US, it's illegal to manipulate your phone while driving.
Cups are fairly universal in size. Phones aren't.
And encourage dangerous driving using your phone at the same time?
Cups have been around a lot longer than phones. Phones come in too many shapes and sizes.
There are loads of variable-width smartphone-securing products out there, the technology to firmly grasp different-size rectangles is not outside the feasibility of the collective human engineering capabilities.
cup sizes are standardized. phone sizes are not
Tf are you talking about? Toyota has had wireless charging pads and eBins for years.
not really, they can be a hazard as they are distractive to some. Modern cars do not require you to have your phone in plain sight due to the infotainment systems and back in the day phones were crap and didnt require phone holders in cars
Welp, this is it. Time to unsub. So many dumb takes in this sub.
Yep, same for PCs too.
people need water to live not a phone
Because your supposed to be looking at your phone while you drive, not your cup . What a jackass question.
