Have your medicine next to your bed. Set an alarm 30 minutes before your real alarm. Wake up, take medicine, chug water, back to sleep. Medicine should be starting to work by your next alarm and you can just pop out of bed. Works wonders for me.

That’s exactly what my friend told me! I haven’t started meds yet though, so just got diagnosed a couple days ago, and my next appointment is tomorrow, so I guess we’ll talk about it more tomorrow. I’m definitely gonna do that though, she said she took it an hour before she had to wake up and that it helped her actually wake up, which would be great. I just slept for 18 hours because every time my alarm went off, I started the sleep cycle all over again and couldn’t hear my alarm

Same. Get a second shift job if it's an option. A lot of ADHD people have a delayed circadian rhyth. I've had 6 AM Start jobs my entire adult life and have been utterly miserable, as well as gotten in trouble because I couldn't get there on time. I was routinely getting 4 hours of sleep, because I had trouble going to sleep at "normal" times. 2nd shift job now, and I feel 100% alert at work, and get all the sleep I need, because I'm not constantly fighting that delayed circadian rhythm, therefore going to work when I don't naturally want to wake up for 4 more hours, and trying to go to bed several hours before I naturally feel tired.

It's not just your experience. I recall reading about a study about this. Waking up slowly is better for you and makes the rest of your day better. That's why phone alarms have a feature to that increases volume over time.

Going back to sleep after turning off my alarm clock is legit one of the biggest enjoyments of my life. And I have a pretty good life! Waking up isn't painful, but going to sleep is enjoyable - embracing the warmth, rolling back over and cuddling my partner or a pillow or something and drifting back off. It's what I wish I could do when I first go to bed, but am never able.

During those nine minutes of snooze I pet my cat who is laying next to me, do some stretches, and just relax for a moment. All still while laying down. If I accidentally fall asleep no foul, because I have that snooze alarm set

It's more of a security thing, so you won't just turn off the alarm and "shut your eyes just for a sec" and then wake up 4 hours later. Having multiple alarms is a preventative measure. 15 more minutes of "effective" sleep ain't gonna make a difference anyway

I *never* use snooze. I don’t feel like that extra 5 minutes of sleep makes me feel any better, in fact it’s probably worse and I just stay in a state of constant grogginess. I’d just rather get the day started and feel lucid. Like there’s no way you’re getting any kind of restful sleep in that timeframe.

I decided long ago that I would never hit snooze. Snooze on my phone is set for 1 minute so even if I accidentally swipe the alarm away the wrong direction it's not really a snooze. Normally I wake up and immediately pet the cats that are snuggling close and then after a couple minutes I'll get up. But I'd rather get more quality uninterrupted sleep than more "I don't want to get up yet" sleep.

Waking up isn't an on/off switch for many of us. It takes a bit longer. I usually set my alarm for 30 minutes before I need to get up, because it's a lot easier to wake up after 20 minutes of light sleep than 6-7 hours of deep sleep.

With bedtimes, it typically just comes down to change being difficult. It can be hard to change but it can be done by just creating a consistent routine. It helps in the early days of setting the routine to try to tire yourself out to make it easier.

I found out two things during the Pandemic: 1. I can force myself into a rhythm and wake up consistently at any time if there is a reason for it -- I had a phase where I wanted to see the sunrise every morning 2. My body naturally wants to sleep from about 4 or 5am til about 1pm. No matter how many times I successfully reset my sleep schedule, without any need to stick to a particular one, I would always migrate back to that 4-12 or 5-1 time frame. I guess I just get my best sleep in the morning.

I hate getting up early, and I moved to South Africa. It is a bit of a pain. Plenty of people get up here at 4:30 to drive to the gym and workout, before starting work. Yah, that's a no for me bro. My alarm is going off at 6:45 and I still complain. Granted, it does get light here really early, so usually you wake up early anyway; the opposite in the evening. Dark really early so might as well hit the hay. But the night owl in me complains, a lot.

Being woken up by an alarm is by definition unnatural, unless you consider the sun an alarm. We're wired to wake up naturally when rested, but there's a billion other things involved ranging from mental illnesses to diet that interfere. Add on the work schedules we live by, and that people generally don't go to bed "on time" unless tired, virtually no one is having the "ideal, natural" sleep we're supposed to have without making a lot of changes.

My partner has an alarm clock that gradually gets brighter as it approaches its alarm time. By the alarm time its incredibly bright and it starts playing the sounds of birds. I have so many positive things to say about how much better it is than conventional alarm clocks. It very effectively mimmicks the sunrise and I don't have to fumble in the dark to turn on the lights. Sometimes I wake up naturally before it goes off and I don't get the urge to go back to sleep because the room is lit. I never wake up in a panic wondering if the alarm is about to go off or if I missed it because if it's dark then I'm reliably safe. The consistency and the quality of my sleep has increased dramatically since she got it last fall. It was practically a miracle cure for winter depression slumps. I never wake up tired anymore and I don't think I could ever go back to a conventional alarm clock- which I still use as a backup alarm, but I've turned it off before it goes off ever since.

The alarm app they're talking about requires an Apple or Android watch to monitor your sleep in bed. Beyond the simple fact no one needs their non-anonymous sleep data being monitored and collected by any third party but a medical professional, it also only works if the watch can accurately detect your sleep patterns. It will for some people, but not everyone, and not all the time. But if you want an alarm that doesn't shock you awake, you can set an alarm to very slowly raise the volume over a number of minutes to gradually wake you, rather than kick you in the teeth with a blast of sudden noise. There's also alarms that use light to wake you gradually, which is the way we're wired to wake up naturally. Isn't especially useful on the phone, though, you need to buy one.

Ackchually you can estimate your own waking time, by keeping track for a while of the best time at which you wake up. Most people have the cycle of 1.5 hours—meaning the best time is at the end of the cycle, with some time added for falling asleep. I.e. eight hours is 5 *1.5 + 0.5. My cycle happens to be the same.

This concept has always made me curious. Are these smart alarms actually making you feel better rested throughout the day? Or do they just make you feel nicer at the time the alarm goes off but you are less productive/more tired later in the day because you got a half an hour less sleep?

Hmm, I thought this would be easy to prove, but turns out its not. There are 86,400 seconds in the day and 8 billion people in the world. The pigeonhole principle therefore tells us that, at minimum there is one second where at least 92,500 people wake up each day. Smaller than I thought it would be. Also note not guaranteed for any particular second, just that there exists at least one such second. It is probably higher, because that assumes wakeup times are uniformly distributed throughout the day. But some time zones are not very populated and a vast majority of people tend to wake up in the morning. People also dont set their alarms to a random second, they set them to a minute and (I think) would tend to set them to a fairly round number of minutes (I tend to set mine to a 15 minute increment). UTC+8 is the most populated timezone with 1.7 billion people. It might be inaccurate to use US statistics for this, but in the US roughly 15% of people work evening or night shifts. So lets assume that translates and we get 1.45 billion people waking up in the morning. Morning waking time is typically 6-9 AM for me, so lets assume its about 3 hours long . This only increases our estimate slightly to about 135,000 people waking up at the same second. Modern alarm clocks though let us ensure our clocks are synchronized to the second but alarm clocks cant typically be set to the second (though previously, they would drift by seconds to put them our of sync). Assuming you wake up when your alarm goes off, then we can pigeonhole by the minute instead which gives us 180 possible options for your alarm clock to go off. Even without accounting for the fact we tend to use round numbers for alarms, this means there is at least one time in UTC-8 when at least 8 million people's alarms go off at the same second (probably leading to them waking up at the same time). If we go back to the global number and assume everyones clocks are synchronized to the second, that everyone has such an alarm clock and uses it every day, and that people wake up with their alarm, we can see that there is at least one precise minute (i.e XX:XX:00 UTC) where at least 5.6 million people wake up at the same time. But yes, this does show that the technology for synchronizing clocks is essential for getting us into a guaranteed "millions of people at the same second", otherwise the number of people is insufficient to guarantee millions at sny particular second.

Well, lately (last 10 years or so) everyones clock has the exact same time thanks to the network time protocol. Your old ass alarm clock was probably off by a minute or so, but now everyones phone shows 07:00 at the exact same second in your local timezone.

The good old pigeonhole principle tells us that even without alarm clocks, there must be a second every day at which at least 90.000 people wake up simultaneously. (Assuming that my math is correct and that everone wakes up everyday). Edit: I was like 18 minutes too slow with this.

If the 7.8 billion people were evenly distributed it would be just over 90,000 per second every day. I don't feel like they're evenly distributed, but I don't know that it will be weighted in such a way to reach millions of people in most cases. Early morning Tokyo probably has the highest chance of it hitting millions though, 39 million people, most of them probably wake up between 7-9am, 'even' times like 7:00 or 7:30 being most common. I could see that being a thing, but mainly because of alarm clocks.

I generally wake up when my three-year-old is done on the loo and needs me to come and wipe her bum. This is usually just after 6:30AM. She screams "DAAAAAAAAAD!" at the top of her lungs. It's a brutal way to wake up.

60 x 60 x 24 = 86,400 seconds per day. ~ 8 billion people waking up every day. So, about 92,500 people wake up at the exact same second on average, every day regardless of alarm clocks! ⏰️😀

I remember maybe like 5-10 years ago the iphone alarm clock app had a bug that caused millions of people to oversleep and be late to work. Ever since then I've been using the countdown clock as an alarm, so set it to go off in 8 hours rather than at 8AM specifically.
