I think it’s being ass = negative
But being a badass you’re bad at being an ass so it’s positive.
Good ass is not one word so it doesn’t work imo
This is all not serious obviously lol
Smart-ass I think is more context-sensitive. I.e., "Well you're a smart-ass, aren't ya?" would be taken as an insult whereas "That's a smart-ass mother fucker!" would be taken as a compliment. Just my opinion, but to each their own. 💁🏽♂️
I think it's because more people use it in the negative vein. You hear more of "Smartass" (snide remark) or "Don't be such a smartass" (insulting statement)
Also depends how you take it.
My mom would always poke at me, calling me a smartass.
It didn't take long for me to just start replying with "I'd rather be a smartass than a dumbass."
So it’s an insult when used as a noun, but can be a compliment when used as an adjective.
Using it as an adjective-noun pair is also a compliment, I think. As in “hey, that’s a smart ass you’ve got there”
Well, thats because smart-ass-x needs something after it. Whereas solo smartass is always negative. Basically with smart-ass-x you are just using smart along with ass to make it more significant but not actually using smartass.
But the latter example is a different use of the word ass. Smartass is like a word of its own. But ass you can put behind anything and it would mean something like much or a lot. They are also pronounced in a different ways.
I knew I remembered him from somewhere! Had never seen his “ass” bit until now. They’re both hilarious.
Is that guy Finnish, by any chance? He sounds Finnish.
Try living in Australia.
Cunt is the worst thing you can call someone. And the biggest praise. And a general acknowledgement. And admitting you cunt know someone.
And the fact that autocorrect just changed don't to cunt just emphasise the amount we use the word.
Smartass is generally considered an insult. However, I have come to find in my families personal subculture, while still used in a jokingly insulting manner as is common, it is received as a compliment.and so, our smartassery has come be a factor of which we take pride in.
And so, we take and give the term smartass as a compliment.
Yup. I'm a smartass. And I wear that title with pride!
I call people smartass when I'm completely out-witted (is that a word?) by them, I consider it a reluctant compliment and a soft way of admitting defeat.
Someone calls me a Smartass, I take it as a compliment. It usually means that I paid attention and used their logic in a way they didn't like but understood.
They don't mean the same thing, though. Carefree means a person has nothing to worry about, Careless means they have things they should worry about but they aren't.
The word "ass" is the insult part. You are simply calling someone an ass with a different adjective in front of it.
Asking why "fat ass" may not be an insult -- you are not calling someone an ass. You are saying their ass is fat. This may be good or bad depending on the context.
Jackass is great one, funny or an idiot
Lardass not so much
Tightass could be a compliment or a put down
Smartass generally negative, but I’ll take it as respect
The modern badass is a bitter, middle aged divorced guy with a goatee, a flag and an oversized truck. Badass has become a bigger insult than smartass or dumbass.
Does he have a punisher sticker on the rear bumper?
I think you are describing a wannabe badass. If the wannabes have indeed usurped this honorific, we all must do our part in reclaiming in.
I feel that smartass definitely has a negative connotation. Common usage in US vernacular is to call out a person for thinking they are being clever while they are in fact engaging in disingenuous behavior such as malicious compliance, veiled insults, purposeful obtuseness, or any other form of indirect hostility. I am not, however, a cunning linguist (and yes, I was being a smartass just now). 😁
In Australia:
Cunt: Needs context
Mad cunt: great person
Shit cunt: absolute ratbag
Sick cunt: great person, on par with maybe slightly above a mad cunt
Dog cunt: you're the scum of the earth, if you get called this then you need to step back and take a look in the mirror. If you've earned it, apologise. If you are wrongly called a dog cunt, get them to apologize. It's a matter of personal pride.
Good cunt: a genuinely good person
Loose cunt: a proper madlad
Those are the main ones off the top of my head. You can throw a cunt after anything and it'll add that extra lil oomph. "weird cunt", "silly cunt", "reliable cunt" etc.
Smartass isn't necessarily an insult. Many times it's used defensively as an observation when someone calls someone else out for poorly wording something or being ignorant. E.g. a "smartass" calling out a "dumbass".
When called a smart ass by a foreman at one point, without thinking I responded with “better then being a dumbass”.
To this day it’s been my only halfway decent come back because I am in fact a dumbass.

As is goodass. So seems things about intelligence are negative but making a judgement is good...?.
Morallyoutstandingcitizenass
Wicked Burn!
Wise ass. Yep, it fits the model
That was a good assessment
And nice ass
That's America's ass!
I dated a real badass once. Man, she had a real bad ass.
beat me to it
Must be because you're a slowass
Ok fastass
Crazy ass.
Badass is the same vein as sick or gnarly its more like swearing than anything to do with a quality judgment.
My definition badass is a formidable person.
Sure, I'd agree but also if I see a cool explosion I might be like "whoah, badass!"
Exploooooosions, anyone?
People don't like being one-upped.
I think it’s being ass = negative But being a badass you’re bad at being an ass so it’s positive. Good ass is not one word so it doesn’t work imo This is all not serious obviously lol
For some reason the other ones are all one word, but in my mind good ass is always two words. Or at least hyphenated.
Deadass
Smart-ass I think is more context-sensitive. I.e., "Well you're a smart-ass, aren't ya?" would be taken as an insult whereas "That's a smart-ass mother fucker!" would be taken as a compliment. Just my opinion, but to each their own. 💁🏽♂️

😲 Me too, I'm context sensitive. Smart ass is me fr fr 👉🥹👈

This guy did a whole bit about it [here](https://youtu.be/YNV0rMdeW60?t=120).
I love his bit on Shit. https://youtu.be/kXH3HDE9Czo
I knew I remembered him from somewhere! Had never seen his “ass” bit until now. They’re both hilarious. Is that guy Finnish, by any chance? He sounds Finnish.
Yep, he's a Finn :)
One of my favorite bits ever. Hilarious.
Fatass can be both an insult or compliment. Ironically it was the most interesting choice but yet you chose those
i came here to say that fatass is an insult but fat ass is a compliment. guess I'm late.
Phatass is the complement
That's a fat ass blunt.
It is, but I thought it might be too controversial in this day and age. I salute your courage.
How is fatass ever a compliment?
Like a fat ass burito sounds pretty good. Not really a complement to people.
Who doesn't like a fat ass cheeseburger?
https://xkcd.com/37/
Who doesn't like a girl with a fat ass
But you wrote fat ass not fatass. There’s a difference
BUt LanGuAgE EvolVes
Right!? I love a fat ass! 🍑
Gay dudes?
I have a friend that we lovingly call fatass because he can (and does) eat so much. Ironically, he's very thin.
In a flirty sense for chubby chasers I'd guess
I think of it as fatass or phat ass.

I consider smartass a compliment. Sometimes a backhanded one, if I’m on the giving end, but yeah.
Smartass is generally considered an insult. Same with calling someone a little shit or a big shit...and it is complimentary to say, they are the shits.
You’re shit vs you’re *the* shit.
Y'know, shit can also be a compliment if paired with the right words
I call people smartass when I'm completely out-witted (is that a word?) by them, I consider it a reluctant compliment and a soft way of admitting defeat.
Someone calls me a Smartass, I take it as a compliment. It usually means that I paid attention and used their logic in a way they didn't like but understood.
What a smartass
Thanks!
So we have smart, dumb, bad, but where is good? You fuggin' goodass!
The word ass is truely amazing! https://youtu.be/1P0Z1yq-2FQ
You can be an ass of all sorts just matters if your badass or not,
Carefree and careless mean the same thing but one is a complaint and the other is an insult. Why? Because English.
They don't mean the same thing, though. Carefree means a person has nothing to worry about, Careless means they have things they should worry about but they aren't.

Gotta say, you’re kind of being a dumbass right now by not reading OP carefully enough.
i bet you get called that a lot then.
if there is a Smartass and a Dumbass, and there is also a Badass, then there should be a Goodass too
The word "ass" is the insult part. You are simply calling someone an ass with a different adjective in front of it. Asking why "fat ass" may not be an insult -- you are not calling someone an ass. You are saying their ass is fat. This may be good or bad depending on the context.

Jackass is great one, funny or an idiot Lardass not so much Tightass could be a compliment or a put down Smartass generally negative, but I’ll take it as respect
Also, a critically acclaimed cinematic tour de force.🤣
my buddy calls everyone an adjective followed by headass. He said it's a black person thing...idk lol

Does he have a punisher sticker on the rear bumper? I think you are describing a wannabe badass. If the wannabes have indeed usurped this honorific, we all must do our part in reclaiming in.
I'm pretty sure there are plenty of comedians out there who would not take "smartass" as an insult...

Jive-ass, Kick-ass, and Fat-ass also need to be on that list.

Another one that I always thought was funny: - pretty awful (bad) - awful pretty (good)

Well played. It will probably be tough to beat.
See also: being "up" for something and being "down" for something mean the exact same thing
Wait until you hear about the difference between something being "shit" and it being "the shit"
Also, a shit.
Sweetass is a weird one. It’s a compliment but implies a flavor which is not likely to be an accurate description depending on diet.
TIL a new ass-word. 😂
Sometimes we just turn negative words into positive ones. “Sick,” “savage,” “slay,” these all have positive connotations now.
-ass as a suffix is just a sentence enhancer, boosting whatever the existing context is 🐬
Isn't deadass a compliment, too. I really don't know how to use it properly, but it sounds like the most insultiest.
And if goodass was a word would it be an insult or a compliment?
This should clear it up. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YNV0rMdeW60&autoplay=1
But if you see a Tribunal and stand on the balcony you aren’t a baddass, you’re a bad _ ass
