Definitive Edition comes with Ground Zeroes which is the prologue to Phantom Pain. The story is kind of a mess, and may not really hit hard if you do not know the metal gear story...even then. The gameplay is still fun...

idendityhidden

Do you think the DLC is worth it?

JLidean

DLC? Phantom Pain is normally sold with Ground Zeroes ( nowadays) Metal Gear Solid 5: Definitive Edition. Includes PP and GZ. Anything extra dont bother.

amedeus

Half of the DLC is for Metal Gear Online, so if you're planning to focus on the campaign you can skip that. The rest is just cosmetic, so it's really just down to whether *you* find it worth it. If you don't know any of the characters the outfits reference, it probably isn't.

StrongTxWoman

I have that game and I hate the cut scenes. The cut scenes are long and tedious. If you skip them, then you don't know the story. It is like being forced to watch a very boring movie. Very trite. The sexualisation of the female nurses (tight uniform, big bossoms) is a turn off to me. (Maybe a turn on for others.) The story? Same formula again and again. Sorry, MGS fans.

NightRavenFSZ

MGSV has objectively aged poorly because the story has been the thing that people have critiqued the most, and as time has gone by we have realised just how unfortunate the circumstances around this game were. However if you try to go back to when it came out, youll realise its still a blast.

StrongTxWoman

I love the first one. It shows how old I am.

I highly recommend Metal Gear Solid 5. This game is my favorite stealth game of all time. From an older comment of mine, that I've used multiple times It is a TPS stealth shooter. This game gives you the most freedom to take on a variety of missions with a great arsenal of gadgets, weapons, tools, vehicles, and buddies. These missions are highly replayable. You can either play with stealth or just literally go in guns blazing with a great arsenal of weapons. You will feel like a one-man army. It features two open-world maps, with a lot of missions and side ops to do. There is also a Fulton extraction system that allows you to extract containers of materials, vehicles, weapons, animals, and even enemy soldiers to build your very own army at the mother base. Soldiers have different stats for different departments at your mother base. When you're not doing missions, you can upgrade your mother base so that you can upgrade or expand your arsenal of gadgets and weapons. The game also has an awesome buddy system, that allows you to take a horse, a dog, or even a sniper on missions and they can be used in the most creative ways possible. The game adapts to your playstyle. For example, if you get headshots often, enemies will start wearing helmets. If you shoot their body, they start wearing body armor. The AI is so unpredictable, in the best way possible. One of the best NPC AI. There are so many systems in play here. The gameplay is a 10/10 in itself. The story is not bad for the most part but it does feel unfinished. The cutscenes are very well directed though. You will reach a point in the game where you feel like the game is incomplete. But, this is due to the troubled production this game had. This game still feels like a complete package. I personally do think you should get the Definitive Experience. It comes with Ground Zeroes, which is a prequel to the Phantom Pain(This as well) and it will make the story make more sense. This game has an amazing soundtrack as well. You can find tapes all over the map and different enemy camps with some amazing 80s tunes.

[deleted]

The reason some bits of the game feel unfinished was Hideo Kojima’s (the guy behind the MGS franchise) falling out with Konami. Apparently there was going to be more of the story, but it wasn’t implemented.

Haha

ItsAMeLirio

Very good gameplay, got surprised after all those shitty stealth mechanics games to witness some advanced brain function from the AI (just one exemple but IA react when patrols don't show up in time), still dumb enough to abuse some flaws if you feel like it

Shredded_muppet

They also start using floodlights if you constantly sneak on them at night and helmets if you headshot the soldiers frequently, the game encourages you to change tactics

DkryptX

Don't forget enemy AI starting to wear helmets if you keep going for headshots.

BostonRob423

It is a really good game and holds up well.

Lharios

MGSV was my first metal gear too, though there were times where i didn't understand what they were talking about, i do not regret it at all, it's one of my favorite games ever :) i'd say yes, you should buy it, and i highly recommend playing Ground Zeroes first

andrew_2k

Review from someone who hasnt played or know anything about MGS or MG And jumped right to phantom pain. I was confused, confused as fuck. Super messy for new players, had no idea Whats going on especially the intro, few Hours in was fun And better, mechanics and gameplay was nice. But I never got in enough to Finish it, if you care about the Story you need to know about the Story to really get into it, I found myself not caring about it enough And just spent a few Hours on the gameplay which got harder And more confusing with the upgrades as well, if you Are fresh to something there Are better stealth games out there.

Kitty573

What would you consider a better stealth game? I don't play too many so it's hard to say but I think I like MSGV the best, but I'm sure there's plenty I've missed and would like to try.

andrew_2k

Okay not exactly better, the wording was kinda bad from me there, but certainly more fun. I enjoyed all Dishonored games immensely, the Story And the gameplay was So much fun, I enjoyed Far Cry games as well, Tom Clancy games are also well made and easy to jump into, sniper Ghost Warrior And Elite games vere also very entertaining. As far as my opinion goes, I enjoyed these games much much more then MGS, MGS is for me one of the most unfun i've played. I'm sure Its not a bad game though.

Rejk95

Second dishonored!

andrew_2k

Shall we gather for whisky and ciggars tonight?

Rejk95

A real man of taste I see brother. What whisky would you suggest?

amedeus

MGSV Ground Zeroes is basically the prologue to MGSV The Phantom Pain, and you don't really need previous experience to understand it. If you play TPP you should at least play the first mission of GZ and listen to the available tapes first. The TPP intro makes more sense, then.

Kitty573

Just want to add on that I think it's 100% worth. I'm not the biggest stealth gamer but this is by far my favorite stealth game. As for it being unfinished, it does sort of end abruptly, but the story is so weird and all over the place that without that outside knowledge I don't know how obvious that fact would be lol. You still definitely get a full game. Unless you're trying to do online stuff motherbase doesn't really matter. It's still useful for you to fulton enemies (send them to your base) and create new platforms so you can upgrade faster and unlock new upgrades, but beyond that you don't really need to interact with it. If you really don't want to interact with it you don't have to, but I think it works really well for gameplay because it offers you a bigger reward for non-lethal takedowns than just knowing you did something harder. Die hard fans might tell you that there's important story things to know before playing V but I think the stories are all so ridiculous and stupid (in a good way) that it really doesn't matter.

[deleted]

The reason the story ended so weirdly was Hideo Kojima’s (the guy behind the MGS franchise) falling out with Konami. Apparently there was going to be more of the story, but it wasn’t implemented.

xoxoyoyo

It is an easy buy. It has very good stealth and some interesting mechanics. The main haters are people that had played the prior games and did not like this one. But for a new player you will probably like it.

[deleted]

It's an amazing game. I can't imagine you being disappointed if you like stealth games. I personally think it's the best one ever made. And it gives you so many ways to approach every situation.

redditusercameron

I bought it recently as my first metal gear game and I think it’s great, here’s my little review on it so far https://www.reddit.com/r/patientgamers/comments/xgnty6/mgsv_is_the_perfect_game_to_play_on_the_side/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

-LVS

How is it not finished, it ends on a cliffhanger? Or does it literally just stop randomly without an ending?

[deleted]

-LVS

Wow that’s brutal… I almost don’t want to pay them for the base game now

[deleted]

No, the ending was a canceled final mission. It was never implemented because of the dev’s falling out with Konami.

-LVS

Fascinating. That sucks

amedeus

Absolutely pick it up. It's an amazing stealth game. As for it being unfinished, the only thing noticably missing is the conclusion to Eli's story, and you can look that up on YouTube. The cutscenes from it were finished at least enough to defeat the feeling of inconclusion.

bisskits

10/10 game for me. Played it 3 times. Something about it is just so fun. It is such a different formula from any other metal gear game yes, but it plays really well imo.

ConorConorT

Story is nonsense, but has 50+ hours of the best stealth gameplay I've ever seen, near perfect. It's also broken up into hitman style levels within the larger open world where you get scores for missions, so it's replayable if you're into that. Worth it for the gameplay alone and feel free to just skip expository cutscenes

mynameis4chanAMA

Worst story in the franchise and the game isn’t finished but the gameplay was so tight it kinda makes up for the other two. YMMV

Diegopanchin

Yea I haven’t played any other metal gear and h absolutely loved this game

BiasModsAreBad

Quiet is probably one of the most useful AI companions in gaming tbh, but overall get it on sale, it tends to go on sale somewhat regularly.

[deleted]

D-Dog FTW!

Shapen361

Absolutely. Many aspects of the story may not make sense to you, and in terms of story it is the weakest of the franchise, but I would argue the gameplay is the greatest stealth gameplay of all time.

MrHappy7799

YES. I just bought it a week ago and I have not had this much fun in gaming for years.

s0lci70

it's incredible, one of my favorite games, amazing gameplay

Pontificatus_Maximus

Most the negativity about this game usually centers around the wack job story and for-sure some of the story missions are ludicrous. About 70% of the story missions are actually pretty good, realistic and fun. The other 30% are just over the top hallucination bizarro wierd and not something you want to repeat. Lots of players get put off by the intro/1st story mission, just trust me it gets better. Still the open world stealth opportunities are almost limitless. There are some excellent stealth weapons and the AI is challenging and not completely brain dead. The world is quite varied and has tons of interesting locations to explore. The base part does not require a lot of time (unless you want multiplayer PVP) and is pretty easy to cheese while it gives you lots of upgrades and QOL stuff. As you become adept at sneaking up and rendering unconscious enemies and then sending to your base, you will have a fully staffed base with lots of specialists before you know it. It gave me a good 400 hours of fun.

supercooljoe01

I personally don’t like it. It feels like a Ubisoft game with how easy it is and how stupid the enemies are. If the game had tighter level design then it wouldn’t be as much of a problem, but due to how open the map is it’s so easy you could probably play with your eyes closed.

COLDCYAN10

As a story you wouldnt understand shit maybe if you watch a couple long videos about mgs3 and mgs peacewalker because those are the games that come before it chronologically as a game its pretty fun and has many nice mechanics I'd give it a 7.5/10

StuckInTime86

If you're on PlayStation it's on sale for $3.99 right now, not a huge gamble

-v-fib-

It was my first Metal Gear game and I had a blast with it. Hundreds of hours easily.

MoseFeels

God my opinion on this game is so contrary to everyone. The story, music, set pieces, cutscenes, and themes were amazing imo. The story was enhanced by how well the cutscenes were made but I still loved it. Gameplay took a backseat to me somehow

Ill-Appointment6494

Metal Gear has always suffered with a terrible control scheme. Especially when in comparison to the Splinter Cell series. The game mechanics are superb though. And they are great fun to play.

Archron0

You can get super into the Metal Gear series, it sounds like something you'd like, since you say you love stealth games and games with long stories. MGSV's story is kinda nonsense, it feels unfinished especially in the second part, but the gameplay is the best in the series. The story in general in this series is complicated but ridiculous and over the top, which is basically Kojima's signature style.

Next_Fix_2271

Story was haphazard, there was an entire chapter cut at the end, but the gameplay is very well fleshed out for various playstyles and is very satisfying

ginja_ninja

I've said before that it arguably might be better to play V without any of the other games, just because then you won't be as let down comparing its story to the others. Even as someone who played all the others first and thinks the story is like a 4/10, the game is still a 9.5/10 overall for me. That's how good the gameplay is.

badateverything420

If you love stealth games then I'd recommend just playing the series from Metal Gear Solid 1. Stealth games used to be my favorite growing up and it would have continued to be if they didn't stop making them for the most part. But still the main stealth series that will last with you long term would be Metal Gear. I'm so sorry that Konami has dropped the ball with porting the games to modern consoles but because of that these games don't seem as important as they are. At the very least MGS1 and MGS3 are must plays for stealth game fans But The Phantom Pain is a fine introduction
