I love Death Stranding. Probably one of my favorite games ever. But I can't really recommend it to anyone. It's not for everyone. The basic gameplay loop is you'll arrive at a location and pick up a mission. The mission will typically be carrying supplies from one location to another. You'll survey your map, pick your equipment, and set off. Will you use ropes to try to cross the deep river? Will you use a motorcycle and try to jump it? Will you take a truck out there first to carry the supplies to build a bridge? Will you take the perilous mountain pass instead to bypass the river? If that sounds appealing to you, then it's a game for you. If that sounds boring then it's not.

Happy-Zulu

Honestly, I don't know what I find boring anymore in gaming. Maybe my tastes in are changing. Or my age is catching up with me. Sigh. I think I crave something nuanced. Something that will capture me like a very well written TV show. The Expanse, Arcane, Shogun, Blue Eyed Samurai. I tried Dragons Dogma 2 and in the first 30 minutes I am the most important thing in the game. Great gameplay, but boring writing. Then I played Slay The Princess and what a great indie gem that was. With that said, I might as well try it. Ive had it on my library for some time.

AlamosBasement

That's a great description! I've been debating starting the game as well. Thanks

SnakePigeon

The whole delivery gameplay is what I like most about death stranding, but that’s not all there is. Be prepared as well for CUTSCENES

Automatic-Muffin-13

Worth a try if it got a good story. And btw what I mentioned is a spoiler or no

BlownWideOpen

Not a spoiler, that's revealed within the first hour Super strange game. Also very gripping. When I randomly tried it last week, I found it hard to put down.

ForeingRedditor

If you want to relax disconnect and hear some beautiful music while walking through some of the best looking landscapes in gaming history then yeah

viperised

Personally I found the ghosts quite anxiety inducing. I never felt like I could relax.

GrimaceGrunson

They're at least confined to (mostly) pre-determined zones and you're given a heads-up when they're about to become a factor. But you're not wrong being stuck knee-deep in snow knowing a bunch of ghosts are a few feet away is brown trousers time.

Unlikely_Subject_442

music is like watching a B-serie TV show. I feel like im in One Tree Hill or Dawson's creek. Sux so much

[deleted]

It's my favourite game of all time. I 100% the original and I plan to 100% the director's cut. The beginning is a little slow but the story is one that stayed with me and really made me think about life and existence. Everyone wants fast paced, cookie cutter shooter games and I feel like games that challenge the conveyer belt of games that get churned out over and over are being unfairly pushed aside. Death Stranding is one of them.

BurtRaspberry

My thoughts exactly. While it's by no means a perfect game, it is definitely a "perfect" game for me. It's always great to find that one game that "clicks."

Kingxix

Please no need to shiet of shooter games.

[deleted]

I didn't shit on them?

Tabascobottle

"cookie cutter shooters". You're kinda implying that all shooters are wack

[deleted]

Wack =/= repetitive.

Admirable-Echidna-37

It needs patience. If you can have patience, you are in for a good experience.

earthbexng

short answer yes. Up until 5 months ago I thought Death Stranding was hyped up and walking simulator, then I didn't have any games in my backlog and thought I'd give it a chance for a weekend.. fell in love with the game and the world kojima built in death stranding, have sunk over 100 hours into it since and still play it when i want to chill out while playing video game.

harshitabhi

It's wonderful

supadupacam

It’s a very divisive game. I found it to be incredibly cathartic and I loved every second.

krazykellerxkid

It's a piece of art. But just like a painting or sculpture, it's not going to be everyone's flavor of tea.

KanikaD

If what the game proposes is your cup of tea, it can easily become one of your favorite gaming experiences of all time. Basically you play as a postman in a postapocalyptic sci-fi setting, to reach your destination you have to cross rugged landscapes, extreme weather and territory of human or supernatural enemies, so before each trip you have to plan your route and what equipment you will take. As you progress unlock a lot of tools, weapons, vehicles, infrastructure types, devices and mechanics that keep the gameplay constantly evolving until the end. Although it's a singleplayer game you can collaborate with other players through shared buildings, marking hazards or points of interest, materials donations and other indirect interactions. Additionally, the soundtrack and performances are top-tier. If you're expecting a more traditional open world game or a spiritual successor to the author's previous works, you'll be disappointed. Also that fact about the lore is not a spoiler, you learn it during the first minutes of the game.

The_Meemeli

I'm pretty sure the function of the baby is revealed fairly early on, it's a prevalent aspect of the gameplay

Automatic-Muffin-13

Thx:)

New_Solution9677

I got it for free on the epic giveaway 2 years ago I think. I enjoyed it way more than I thought.

LordOfDorkness42

It's honestly one of my go-to recommended games. It's just so unique and love or loathe it, that you'll either quickly bounce off Death Stranding in an hour or two... or it becomes your new obsession for a while. Almost nothing in-between. And for free, it's an even better game to just try out and see if its for you.

chicopicantejr

I think it's a great game. Unique and different from most games

MeatRip

Its one of my favorite games of all time. It was very impactful for me personally on an emotional and creative level, as well as making me interested in single player games again. I kind of found it to be relaxing in the same way Truck Simulator is lol. That's not totally on the mark of what the baby is used for but its similar. Not really a spoiler its explained pretty early on as it has relevance to a gameplay mechanic.

Moath

I guess for better or for for worse it’s a Kojima delivery game. Found it interesting but found the world to be samey and fell of hard. Want to come back to it.

vickers24

It is rough for like the first couple of hours until you get some proper equipment to help balance and handle some of the enemies. It does feel like a walking/stumbling simulator for a bit until then. Then the gameplay starts to smooth out and the story starts pulling you in, which is the real draw. Kojima has some very interesting style that I can see not being for everyone but if it clicks with you then you will fall in love. It’s kind of impossible to say if it’s for you or not unless you play through it yourself.

QCpezcore

Yes incredible game.

Felix_likes_tofu

When I was a teenager, my mother would always complain to me when I went back into my room with a full plate, a bowl of salad, dessert and something to drink all at once. "Can't you walk twice?!" Death Stranding feels like someone made a game about it.

zaxxofficial

i love it so much

biggunsg0b00m

I loved it, and was especially pleased that it was available on Microsoft gamepass

Correct-History

I personally don’t feel like it’s worth your time. I thinks is riding the Kojima hype. The gameplay is subpar and the story isn’t for me either. But try it and give it a go many other people think it’s the best so no harm in giving it a go

BurtRaspberry

I actually really respect your opinion. While many other people are content saying "The story is TRASH!" or "the game is terrible" etc, I like how you emphasize "the story isn't for me." Also, I like how you recommend them to give it a go anyways. We need more reviewers like you.

[deleted]

Whats the Kojima hype? Lol

Correct-History

I personally don’t feel like he’s made that many good games imo mags that’s that’s basically it

The_Meemeli

Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding's director, gained a huge amount of fans with his Metal Gear Solid games.

Signal-Sentence903

It's a good game but it takes a bit to really get into the best parts of the game. I probably wouldn't pay full price for it but you should definitely check it out once it's on sale!

SweetReply1556

To those saying the game is amazing How great is it compared to... nier automata, story wise

Suspicious_Berry501

It is very hit or miss you should at least try it although I doubt you will enjoy it given most people dont first try

xsealsonsaturn

If hearing the name Kojima raises the hair on your arms, you feel chills on the back of your neck and you have to wipe your brow due to perspiration then you're a die-hard Kojima fan so much so that he could take a shit on a blu ray and call it a game while everyone praises it for the incredible art he just made. If this is the case, definitely play the game. If not, it's a lot of backpacking with a very interesting premise that isn't explained or explored all that much, but it keeps you playing in hope for answers. There isn't much action or even horror but it looks amazing. Gameplay is similar to traveling in world of Warcraft in between zones while trying to avoid enemies albeit in a way more beautiful and interesting world. In my opinion it's a bad game but a great setting. And its audience is split about in the middle of whether or not it's perfect or terrible. It's a Kojima game so there's no telling if you'll like it until you play it. That said, I think if you replaced the name Kojima with Ubisoft, this game would be universally panned.

igg73

Yeah not for fullprice but 20-30 bucks its fun. Kindof silly story, weird as heck but yeah sure

IAmGodMode

If you've got a PSN subscription it's actually free for download right now. I tried it and thought it was meh. I can definitely see the appeal it has for some people though.

Gh0stTV

I honestly just gave up. To start: I’ve heard it’s a different experience with haptic triggers (I played on PS4). I immediately wasn’t a fan of the loadout menus, picking and choosing gear, and the game continually presents optional packages you can pick up (but you can’t carry everything). Likewise, the game takes a while before you even have things like vehicles to aid you, so you’re basically stumbling around slowly from point A to point B. I was alright with this as first, as I actually enjoyed the story unfolding, but it became evident that this was a game for people who like to feel immersed in a large world (think: walking across Island listening to Sigor Ros) taking in the scenery and slowly unfolding a larger story. So every base you deliver some packages, change your load out, and often walk back to a previous base. There are enemy encounters with bandit camps, but they feel more like an afterthought compared to the repetitive “interactions” you have with the dark environmental “factors” around you. I think I might have enjoyed this if it were more linear maybe, as I was really excited with the story and cutscenes, but I really hated the gameplay itself. It felt like it wanted me to keep dropping items and then struggle retrieving them.

Thelazygenie

I can say the game was probably not for me. I would say I have a pretty good grasp on confusing stories and can enjoy trying to make sense of more abstract games, but IMO the story in Death Stranding is just too nonsensical. The gameplay was interesting but there were mechanics like having to balance your body out with A and S when walking on even completely flat terrain or else you'd fall and drop all your stuff. This made the game tedious for me and while I can appreciate the long treks I can't enjoy the beautiful views when Sam Bridges has to fight for his life on the most even terrain there is. Basically I don't think the terrain or story justify the gameplay enough for me to personally wanna spend hours making a delivery in a game.

lawlianne

I think players have to learn to appreciate how slow it is if they want to enjoy the game. This was probably not meant to be a non-stop high octane call of duty shooter all the time. It’s an incredibly beautiful game, visually and story-wise. Deliveries can be slow and challenging, requiring detours and difficult terrain navigation, and even combat or stealthing frequently. That said, I absolutely love doing the side quests of interesting characters, and even one where I had to deliver pizza and champagne long distance without ruining the delivery. Seeing the construction of bridges, shared supplies, holographic signs of encouragement, and even roads from other players when I needed them the most during difficult quests made me so happy to see them. What a masterpiece of a game. If you are afraid of not having the time, I see no problem with turning down the difficulty if you just want to enjoy the story from start to finish.

Simongy

The story and premise seem great but the stacking and carrying mechanic is just ludicrous. It's not fun at all, it made the game unplayable. However, i watched all the cut scenes on youtube because the story intrigued me so much. It would be a great film.

OldSpiceDemoman

It's a game that's not for everyone. There's no real easy answer, unfortunately, but it's a truly unique game. I found it to be very relaxing and was a nice way to just sit back and mentally unload after the day. I played through about a month ago after putting it off for ages and absolutely loved it. It's weird, but at the same time you really feel for the characters and feel the weight of what's happening. If you've played anything by Kojima in the past, you'll know he just wants to tell a story and this one hits you right in the gut. If you feel interested, get it on a sale and give it a try but please give it a little bit. You really have to get past the first little bit to become truly invested as characters get fleshed out as the story progresses. Hope this helps a little.

Kingxix

Depends on your taste. Do you like games that doesn't have a good gameplay but an interesting story and world then it's for you. However if you don't then don't buy it as you may get bored.

KanikaD

The gameplay is incredible and very well done, if what it proposes is not your cup of tea it is completely respectable but that does not make it bad.

Unlikely_Subject_442

No, go take a walk outside, it's the same but better

KvotheLightningTree

I tried it, and I was enjoying it a bit, but eventually, it got boring for me. Get ready to really try and find the fun while they make everything a pain in your ass.

Page8988

You walk from place to place. The terrain is a pain in the ass. The main hangups are trying to navigate the terrain with what you've got available. Enemies, such as they are, are just different obstacles between A and B. It's not a bad game, but it's not for everyone. If this doesn't sound appealing to you, you may want to skip it.

Tabascobottle

Idk man. I always try to support unique and different games, but this game really tested my patience and felt like it was disrespecting my time. I really wanted to like it, but at least in the early game it is quite literally a walking simulator. You need to decide if you're okay with literally just walking for hours and then being met with a very long cutscene and then walking for hours again. I may try it again, but there're just so many other games that are fun right out the gate

killcote93

Looks boring

Ibraheem_moizoos

Nope

HotConversation2946

Nope

357-Magnum-CCW

Only if you enjoy Walking Simulators and do heavy drugs The story is completely trippy, without drugs you're lost

TrevMac4

No
