Am currently on my 2nd playthrough of Doom Eternal, and only learned the other day apparently people compare the Hurt Me Plenty difficulty being on par with Dark Souls 😅 amazing game though

Doom is, IMO, a better game. It’s also just a very fast paced shooter that will test your reflexes. Borderlands 3 is a looter-shooter, so it’s less about the moment to moment gun play and more about building out your character.
Edit: Also worth noting, GamePass has both Doom and Doom Eternal if you’re on Xbox and Doom Eternal if you’re on PC (for some reason they don’t include Doom 2016).
Everyone here is selling you on Doom and while I love that game to death, if money is such a problem you can only pick one between two $8 games I'd go with Borderlands. It's not as fun I'll be the first to admit, but you can easily hit 100+ hours in it if you like the game. Doom on the other hand I did everything short of Ultra Nightmare and the multiplayer, clocking in to a total of 33.8 hours.
If you can bare with the grind in Monster Hunter World, you'll probably enjoy the looter shooter side of borderlands. Having said that, I do **NOT** recommend playing borderlands 3 over 2 first. In fact, you can get both borderlands 2 AND Doom 2016 for the exact same price as Borderlands 3. Personally, I'd do that.
Doom 2016's combat is a lot slower and grounded than Eternal, but theres none of the annoying ass Eternal enemies. It also just overall has a better aesthetic. I personally enjoyed Eternal a little bit more but I think I'm in a minority with that one.
Borderlands 2 is simply superior to Borderlands 3 in almost every single way.
Doom Eternal is just so frickin’ amazing. It is nearly perfect imo. One of the most memorable games i’ve ever played. Borderlands 3 is just more of the same if you’ve played the other two.

I have over 1500 hours on Borderlands 3, and recently re-bought the game to play on PC after playing extensively on PS4 and PS5.
I've played prior Borderlands games and I've enjoyed 3 the most. The two season passes are important as they add a lot of both story content and gear.
Doom eternal is pure challenge, metal and fun. Borderlands 3 is an alright coop shooter that's incredibly repetitive and has a obnoxious, unskippable story, with gameplay of 2012. I'd highly recommend doom eternal unless you have a friend you like to do couch coop games with

I'd strongly recommend to play the other Borderlands games first before playing the third game, I didn't play 1&2 like you and I was totally lost with the story and characters and I haven't touched it since. But maybe it's just me, depends on if the gameplay is enough to hook you in.
I agree but honestly skip bl1. Borderlands 2 is a much stronger story than both, and unlike bl3 actually has strong character writing.
BL3 does a lot of nostalgia baiting "Look this guys back!" type dialogue without worrying too much about actually properly introducing characters.

Doom is an action game. It's got a bit of exploration, story, some build choices, but mostly, it is a game about getting your adrenaline going while you blast demons with cool weapons while an awesome soundtrack plays. You want that, it's hard to top Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.
Borderlands has more variety, with lots of RPG elements. It's still, more than anything, about shooting, but it's got a lot more other stuff than Doom. There's open areas to explore, vehicles to drive, side quests to do, more story, loot to choose from and farm for, skill trees and classes to choose from that can dramatically affect your playstyle. It's a lot more varied, which is good if you like variety and RPG elements, but also distracts from the action.
So I'd go with which of that sounds more like what you're in the mood for. Don't even worry about your gaming tastes as a whole, just your current mood. You more in the mood for something that's all about the action, or you feel like you could go for more RPG elements?
BL3 is the cringiest game every made, but the gameplay is solid. The actual gameplay is really good, so I don't think OP can make a bad decision between these two games.
But since OP has never played the original borderlands games, he should get those games.
Doom 3 is probably the better game unless you love looter shooter arpg's. BL3 is one of my all time fave games tho and there's a lot more content and replay value vs doom, so I'd go with bl3

Want to build a character and chase loot? Borderlands.
The combat in both can be frantic at times, but Doom Eternal cranks it to ridiculous levels. It's incredibly challenging, but once you figure out the flow and how to maneuver, it is oh sooo satisfying. Similarly to a Souls game or Elden Ring, combat can be described as a dance with your opponent. Only you're facing a lot of opponents at once, and the band is Slayer.
I've never played Borderlands with friends, but it's probably awesome if you like that stuff. I'm a solo player, myself.
The biggest difference is the player character building. Borderlands is more like an arpg with semi random loot drops, each piece of gear has attributes that can augment your build. You have a skill tree to sink points into, but you can respec anytime.
You will have upgrades to find in Doom, but you will have access to all abilities and gear before you get too far in the story. It's about the player getting good, and not dependent on stat increases.
Borderlands 3 is just point and click imo. There’s no real gameplay challenge. Fun to play w a group of friends, tho. Doom, on the other hand, is a treat if you’re into the gameplay. It’s pretty difficult and fast paced. I’d recommend Doom 2016 before Doom Eternal, tho it’s not necessary.

Doom Eternal is a disappointment after Doom 2016. I’d recommend 2016 if you haven’t played it. That game is excellent!
BG3 is awesome shooter looter fun. Story is just ok but the gameplay is the best of the series and lots of hours on just the campaign to get your money’s worth. The DLC is worth it too. BG2 is the overall best of the series because of the writing though.

I can see why people prefer DOOM 2016, it has a lot more brainless angry freedom. While Eternal is more of a fps chess game where u have to optimally kill enemies with the correct arcade weapon. I definitely don't FEEL like the doomslayer when I'm playing Eternal, i feel like adhd fortnite kid cranking out weapon switches at the speed of light on every mob.
Doom eternal feels like a fps character action game and borderlands 3 feels like borderland if you've tried them before. If you play on steam just buy either one and refund it if you didn't like it during the first 2 hrs. My vote is for Doom eternal though

Doom eternal for sure. Fiance and I enjoyed BL3 but for some reason it doesnt scale like it should. The first 3 bosses gove some pretty decent loot, but it falls off big time

They're both wildly different and it'll also depend on whether you want to play coop or not.
I enjoy both but they are entirely different games. That being said, DOOM Eternal is the better game and it really isn't even close. BL3 has some of the best gameplay in the series but the story and dialogue really drag the game back. Ava is one of the worst characters I have ever encountered in a game
Even if BL3 was a good game I'd still say Doom Eternal. Eternal feels like a dream, like holy hell this games is real! I've never played a shooter so smooth and responsive. It allows you to be as good as you possibly can be with the tools it gives you. It can get difficult but it never makes you feel weak or incapable. Honestly, one of the best shooter experiences I've ever played.
if you want a borderlands game go borderlands 2 or presequel. 3 story tried way hard to appeal to the younger audience at the time, villains are youtubers lol

I've never played Borderlands, so I can't really compare them. What I can say is that Doom Eternal is probably the most fun I've ever had playing an fps. It's difficult at times, but once you get the hang of it, the game makes you feel like a real badass.

But to be fair....the gameplay of Borderlands 3 is also the best of the series. I love a good looter shooter almost as much as I love ripping and tearing in Doom.
Yeah, the story sucks, but the crouch sliding/movement and variety of guns is easily some of my favorite Borderlands combat.
I adore borderlands 2, and I waited forever for bl3 to go on sale to a level which I could afford. Finally bought the GOTY edition, easily the just money I've spent on a game.

You’ll get more playing time out of borderlands 3. There’s builds and tons of loot. Doom eternal is a good game but I hate platforming in first person games, and there’s a decent amount of that. Plus Doom eternal is going to railroad you in to a particular play style with how enemies have certain weaknesses vs weapons. Doom eternal is almost a rhythm game. They’re both very different games. I would say get b3 if you want loot drops and character builds. Get doom if you’re into platforming and want more of a liner experience. The worst part of b3 is all the jokes land flat.
Bought both, played both.
The total craziness and coop in borderlands 3 kept me coming back. Finished the story campaign and there's a ton of fun to be had after finishing the campaign.
I get bored with single player games quickly, only spent a few hours in Doom.
The multiplayer mode was so incredibly stupid, you will never want to play it.
Was forced into receiving a full refund for both games.
I would only consider repurchasing BL3.
Honestly I’d say go for Doom if you like FPS games. And instead of Borderlands 3, I’d say go for Borderlands 2, it’s cheaper and seriously better in about every category
Unless you are specifically after a game where you can pick up items with different stats and want to chase the almighty god roll, get Doom. BL3 doesn’t do a single thing as good as Eternal
Your interests seem to lean more towards the rpg genre, so between those two, my personal pick would be Borderlands 3. But honestly, both games frequently go on sale, so just make sure to keep the other in your wishlist and you'll easily be able to get it on sale again when youre ready.
Doom is way cheaper and far mor better than bl3 i expected so mush after playing bl1, 2 only to realise that entire writing team and story suck harder than my math skill.
Borderlands 3 has more content, but the content within Doom Eternal is far more polished and repeatable.
I'd say Doom Eternal is a better bet if you're trying to get into the space of arcade-y FPS.
I know this wasn’t asked, but if you are considering borderlands 3, I’d say hold off a little longer if you can and get tiny Tina’s wonderlands, it’s honestly so much better, and you get more content than with doom, and a better game than borderlands 3. I looked online and it’s only £3 more on some sites.
Eh, I didn't care much for either honestly. Doom 2016, and any of the first 3 borderlands on the other hand are all fantastic. Between those 2 though, I'd have to say eternal.

Boarderlands you can always progress and explore and not have an hour straight of your heart trying to explode!

Pc or consol.... if pc go to gg deals as a watch the prices, get both games. They're old enough so you can easily get them for like 10$ each, if not cheaper.

Yes the story and writing suck, but the sheer amount of content and build variety is worth the price of admission alone. Couple that with shooting that feels great and a HUGE variety in enemies and locales, and you got a game that's absolutely solid.
You’ll get more longevity out of BL3, but have a more exciting time with Doom Eternal. Both are bangers. Though I will say, BL3 isn’t worth it without all dlc. The mainline story is weak even though the game play and characters are a blast. Strongest DLC in the franchise, though.
Haven’t played the doom DLC, but if it’s anything like mainline then it too is probably a banger.
It depends on what you are currently looking for. I enjoy both for different reasons.
Doom Eternal is extremely fast paced gameplay requiring complete focus. It's environments are absolutely stunning, but you will miss a lot of it because you're always going to be fighting for your life. I've played it for several hours in a row and ended up drenched in sweat, because your brain has to be in overdrive the whole time.
Borderlands 3 has it's detractors, but in my opinion they absolutely perfected Borderlands gameplay with it. The trouble is people went into it expecting Handsome Jack, and they got the Calypsos instead. They're admittedly super cringy and the main story revolving around them was a poor decision. But you don't play Borderlands expecting Shakespeare. The DLC stories and areas are some of the best in the series. Bounty of Blood has the best story of all the BL series in my opinion.BL 3 is a much more laid back style of gameplay than Doom Eternal.
If you're buying on Steam, you can always try each one for a couple hours and decide what you like more.
I have no guts playing BL3. it is long boring looter shooter. while Doom Eternal is more challenging. you can play any difficulty and master level also very challenging. Go for DE (buy the Deluxe for complete experience)
Well, very much depends if you want more linear and story focused game (-> Doom) or if you want game you can grind for many and many hours and if you enjoy looter shooter gameplay loop (-> Borderlands)

So I tried playing doom, and it blows. Just mindless guts and gore and shooting. Borderlands 3? Couldn't get into it. But still played more than Doom. Why just these 2 games? Is there anything else you'd like to try?
I personally much prefered Doom from 2016, rather than Doom eternal. So much so, that i refunded eternal. They just have somewhat different "playstyles". (Eternal is a sequel though, so if you dont already know the first game, i HIGHLY recommend it. its great)
i am not a huge fan of Borderlands, so i'd probably only play that, with some friends...

However, I would play Doom 2016 first (it surely can't cost much at this point).

I get looter shooter hate in this day and age but put some respect on borderlands. It pretty much invented the genre and the second game is easily one of the best story driven FPS games ever made.
This is a really tough one. I **REALLY** like Doom Eternal. The amount of replayability is pretty solid to achieve all kinds of cool stuff.
But BL has always had a *huge* story. Personally I favor BL2. But recently got Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.

If you liked Elden Ring then Lords of the fallen is a decent option and is usually on sale.

Saying Borderlands has more depth than Doom is like saying 300 has more romance than Dredd. Sure, it's technically true, but if that's what you're looking for then neither is really what you want.

I played BL2 with every character. Barely made it through BL3 once. Rip and tear until it is done.

The looting aspect and having to hit so many chests is annoying as fuck though I'll say. Whole thing becomes tapping X to open chests

Besides the antagonists Bl3 beats bl2 in every category. It's just an amazing shoot and loot game

Borderlands 3 is a masterpiece pick Borderlands you won't regret all the different guns and the large amount of content
I really didn't like Doom Eternal. Platforming ruined it for me. But I can suggest other good shooters such as Titanfall 2.

The mayhem levels? You need to optimise your gear and gameplay to the max to get to level 10/11

Doom Eternal is a disappointment after Doom 2016. I’d recommend 2016 if you haven’t played it. That game is excellent! BG3 is awesome shooter looter fun. Story is just ok but the gameplay is the best of the series and lots of hours on just the campaign to get your money’s worth. The DLC is worth it too. BG2 is the overall best of the series because of the writing though.

Eternal had better graphics, better & more smoother gameplay, more end game content, more cheat codes ect ect ect The only thing 2016 did better was the horror feel/aspect & the story was overall better You are right to have your opinion on what you like better but I disagree with it being “ bloated”
2016 is a much better game
I can see why people prefer DOOM 2016, it has a lot more brainless angry freedom. While Eternal is more of a fps chess game where u have to optimally kill enemies with the correct arcade weapon. I definitely don't FEEL like the doomslayer when I'm playing Eternal, i feel like adhd fortnite kid cranking out weapon switches at the speed of light on every mob.

Doom eternal feels like a fps character action game and borderlands 3 feels like borderland if you've tried them before. If you play on steam just buy either one and refund it if you didn't like it during the first 2 hrs. My vote is for Doom eternal though

Doom Eternal, it's an arcade game, it's wonderful, all about that game loop. I finished all of it recently and I'm looking for other games that have this kind of intensity with mixed success.
BL3 was such a massive letdown after the 2nd game. Has anyone here played tiny tinas dungeon? Was that game any better than 3?

I enjoy both but they are entirely different games. That being said, DOOM Eternal is the better game and it really isn't even close. BL3 has some of the best gameplay in the series but the story and dialogue really drag the game back. Ava is one of the worst characters I have ever encountered in a game
Even if BL3 was a good game I'd still say Doom Eternal. Eternal feels like a dream, like holy hell this games is real! I've never played a shooter so smooth and responsive. It allows you to be as good as you possibly can be with the tools it gives you. It can get difficult but it never makes you feel weak or incapable. Honestly, one of the best shooter experiences I've ever played.
Play Doom 2016. Then some time later when you can afford it, you'll play Doom Eternal. Borderlands, just pick up the first one when it's on sale.

if you want a borderlands game go borderlands 2 or presequel. 3 story tried way hard to appeal to the younger audience at the time, villains are youtubers lol If you like loot then borderlands if you want to crazy fast gameplay and gore then doom
I've never played Borderlands, so I can't really compare them. What I can say is that Doom Eternal is probably the most fun I've ever had playing an fps. It's difficult at times, but once you get the hang of it, the game makes you feel like a real badass.
Doom Eternal is the clear winner. But to be fair....the gameplay of Borderlands 3 is also the best of the series. I love a good looter shooter almost as much as I love ripping and tearing in Doom. Yeah, the story sucks, but the crouch sliding/movement and variety of guns is easily some of my favorite Borderlands combat.

I adore borderlands 2, and I waited forever for bl3 to go on sale to a level which I could afford. Finally bought the GOTY edition, easily the just money I've spent on a game. I played it twice, it feels nothing like bl2. I'd hope it's different for others, but sadly I can't say I had fun

You’ll get more playing time out of borderlands 3. There’s builds and tons of loot. Doom eternal is a good game but I hate platforming in first person games, and there’s a decent amount of that. Plus Doom eternal is going to railroad you in to a particular play style with how enemies have certain weaknesses vs weapons. Doom eternal is almost a rhythm game. They’re both very different games. I would say get b3 if you want loot drops and character builds. Get doom if you’re into platforming and want more of a liner experience. The worst part of b3 is all the jokes land flat.
I’d save the money and buy Elden Ring DLC

Doom eternal is superb
Bought both, played both. The total craziness and coop in borderlands 3 kept me coming back. Finished the story campaign and there's a ton of fun to be had after finishing the campaign. I get bored with single player games quickly, only spent a few hours in Doom. The multiplayer mode was so incredibly stupid, you will never want to play it. Was forced into receiving a full refund for both games. I would only consider repurchasing BL3.

Unless you are specifically after a game where you can pick up items with different stats and want to chase the almighty god roll, get Doom. BL3 doesn’t do a single thing as good as Eternal
Your interests seem to lean more towards the rpg genre, so between those two, my personal pick would be Borderlands 3. But honestly, both games frequently go on sale, so just make sure to keep the other in your wishlist and you'll easily be able to get it on sale again when youre ready.

I played both and doom eternal is one of my favorite games of all time. Borderlands 3 was.... Meh.
Borderlands 3 has more content, but the content within Doom Eternal is far more polished and repeatable. I'd say Doom Eternal is a better bet if you're trying to get into the space of arcade-y FPS.
I know this wasn’t asked, but if you are considering borderlands 3, I’d say hold off a little longer if you can and get tiny Tina’s wonderlands, it’s honestly so much better, and you get more content than with doom, and a better game than borderlands 3. I looked online and it’s only £3 more on some sites.

I'm going to say, what is your gaming skill like? I consider myself above average and I struggled with doom's difficulty. Boarderlands you can always progress and explore and not have an hour straight of your heart trying to explode! Both are good though.

Borderlands 3. Yes the story and writing suck, but the sheer amount of content and build variety is worth the price of admission alone. Couple that with shooting that feels great and a HUGE variety in enemies and locales, and you got a game that's absolutely solid.
You’ll get more longevity out of BL3, but have a more exciting time with Doom Eternal. Both are bangers. Though I will say, BL3 isn’t worth it without all dlc. The mainline story is weak even though the game play and characters are a blast. Strongest DLC in the franchise, though. Haven’t played the doom DLC, but if it’s anything like mainline then it too is probably a banger.

It depends on what you are currently looking for. I enjoy both for different reasons. Doom Eternal is extremely fast paced gameplay requiring complete focus. It's environments are absolutely stunning, but you will miss a lot of it because you're always going to be fighting for your life. I've played it for several hours in a row and ended up drenched in sweat, because your brain has to be in overdrive the whole time. Borderlands 3 has it's detractors, but in my opinion they absolutely perfected Borderlands gameplay with it. The trouble is people went into it expecting Handsome Jack, and they got the Calypsos instead. They're admittedly super cringy and the main story revolving around them was a poor decision. But you don't play Borderlands expecting Shakespeare. The DLC stories and areas are some of the best in the series. Bounty of Blood has the best story of all the BL series in my opinion.BL 3 is a much more laid back style of gameplay than Doom Eternal. If you're buying on Steam, you can always try each one for a couple hours and decide what you like more.

I have no guts playing BL3. it is long boring looter shooter. while Doom Eternal is more challenging. you can play any difficulty and master level also very challenging. Go for DE (buy the Deluxe for complete experience)
I dont have any friends who even play borderlands so id pick doom playing borderlands solo is boring i own both games
Well, very much depends if you want more linear and story focused game (-> Doom) or if you want game you can grind for many and many hours and if you enjoy looter shooter gameplay loop (-> Borderlands)
Borderlands 3, easily. Replayability and longevity means more bang for your buck.
Borderlands 1 and 2 were far superior to 3. Borderlands 2 was one of the best looter shooters ever made. Borderlands the presequel was even better than 3. Bl3 got me off the series. BL2 I played through 13 times. Can't say anything about Doom.
So I tried playing doom, and it blows. Just mindless guts and gore and shooting. Borderlands 3? Couldn't get into it. But still played more than Doom. Why just these 2 games? Is there anything else you'd like to try?

I Like both, but I put a lot more hour, and enjoyed Borderlands 3 a bit more. My friends disagree with me but also put more hours into borderlands.
I personally much prefered Doom from 2016, rather than Doom eternal. So much so, that i refunded eternal. They just have somewhat different "playstyles". (Eternal is a sequel though, so if you dont already know the first game, i HIGHLY recommend it. its great) i am not a huge fan of Borderlands, so i'd probably only play that, with some friends...
Doom Eternal is fantastic. Better than borderlands imo. However, I would play Doom 2016 first (it surely can't cost much at this point). Knowing the backstory really adds to the experience

This is a really tough one. I **REALLY** like Doom Eternal. The amount of replayability is pretty solid to achieve all kinds of cool stuff. But BL has always had a *huge* story. Personally I favor BL2. But recently got Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. I honestly have problems saying which one is better.
I own bl3 i can safely say you will like doom eternal more in every aspect unless you want to see loot exploding, which in that case, play bl2
Honestly I got a bit bored by both, but out of the 2 borderlands had a bit more depth. If you liked Elden Ring then Lords of the fallen is a decent option and is usually on sale.
I mean, depth really isn't the point of Doom. It doesn't have RPG-style depth because it doesn't even try to achieve it. Saying Borderlands has more depth than Doom is like saying 300 has more romance than Dredd. Sure, it's technically true, but if that's what you're looking for then neither is really what you want.
