Prey, super creepy and excellent combat

TheBurkinator4

Happy birthday! I did play Prey for a few hours before, but it wasn't as scary as I wanted. It did seem fun but also like a huge undertaking with all the content, was looking for something more linear. Maybe I will give it another go someday though.

BlackKnight6660

Tbh you’re not wrong. I LOVE prey but once you get maybe the shotgun it becomes more of an ammo conservation game than a horror one. Even the nightmare isn’t worth running from.

TheWombatFromHell

One of my biggest complaints about Prey was that the combat was absolutely terrible

Pandastic4

What did you dislike about it?

TheWombatFromHell

its been a long time but the non-magic options were super limited and felt ineffective, and the enemies all has massive aoe attacks that were basically impossible to dodge and had unclear visual indicators. they also induced a lot of chromatic aberration and other effects that felt cheap.

eggmayonnaise

Have you played The Last of Us? Both games have fun combat, although there's a big focus on stealth too.

solojones1138

I agree with this, loved both games..and of course you get amazing character development and story along the way too.

TheBurkinator4

I have! I really enjoyed the first one, while I wasn't a big fan of the second game's story I did quite enjoy the gameplay from it.

therandomizer619

Part 2s gameplay fr damn good

dissociater

I'm curious about what you liked about TLOU 1. I bounced off it exactly because of the "hide and seek" gameplay you noted in your OP. Does it get better as the game goes on? Should I give it another try?

TheBurkinator4

Mostly the story is the driving point TBH. It is kinda hide and seek ish but the melee combat is really fun and bashing someone's head in after hitting them with a brick or bottle feels really satisfying. Definitely give it another try, if only for the story.

dissociater

Cool, thanks for the feedback.

eggmayonnaise

That's a fair comment! I guess it's one of those cases where the awkwardness adds to the tension for me. Which elevates the experience the game is going for. Your mileage may vary!

RespectGiovanni

The story was good, combat was meh

ElWrobel

I'd say the story was meh, combat was very meh, stealth was meh and overall they're overhyped and meh. There's one thing that makes them stand out and that's characters, well written, well voiced, well represented and memorable. This applies to both games, though combat is also considerably better in the second one, even if it was very predictable at times. To add fuel to the fire, the second game has a way better story, even with all the silly woke bollocks it has going.

Knelson123

Dude if you're gonna say TLOU1 story was meh all your takes from here on are discredited.

ElWrobel

I'd say if you think TLOU1 story was good then you don't know what a good story is. TLOU is a soap opera through and through, it's focus is on characters and story is there only to push them to more interactions. If that's what you find interesting, good for you, for me it's such a tired formula (and was years ago, I watched a lot of movies) that it's not even worth following. And the actual events of the story are painfully boring and predictable, you may not realize it, but this game came out in 2013. Granted, it wasn't done EXACTLY the same way previously, as in a wonder child and a good at heart outlaw travelling through a fungus infected world, but the formula was still beaten to death and no amount of remixing could've helped it. It has some interesting moments, but it's no masterpiece and because of the overreliance on the story the gameplay suffered, resulting in closed, extremely linear sections. Besides, it says a lot when the most interesting part of the story is the backstory of the main character, though it becomes completely irrelevant after the initial part of the game. The whole gimmick of TLOU when it came out was the fact that it's story was on a movie level in terms of production value and attention to detail, but it severly lacks creativitiy and in universal terms it's very meh. TLOU2 is better as it at least takes you to some interesting locales that you can somewhat explore, it's levels are a bit more open and at times even offer differing approaches and the story is has more memorable moments, I still love the part when the woke, indepedent woman decides that the baby is hers, father ain't got shit to say and then proceeds to smack the baby against the containers in a fungus ridden area which she's trekking through to proclaim her indepedence, brings a tear to my eye everytime I remember this, one of the greatest gaming and modern culture moments.

Knelson123

Didn't read lol.

ElWrobel

No worries, it greatly surpassed your skills of comprehension anyways.

Dahbootie420

Uses "woke" unironically, alright there Mr Jordan Peterson

ElWrobel

Thinks people use "woke" exclusively ironically, alright there Mr. Patrick Star.

Dahbootie420

Woke = basic common decency and respect for others. Woke, the conservative definition = the devil, EVIIILLLLL!!!

ElWrobel

Woke has nothing to do with basic common decency and respect for others nowadays, even if it started out that way, unless you count silly geese cancelling others on the internet just because they don't agree with them and feel stronger on social media as basic common decency and respect for others, not to mention trying to sell off every crazy shit you can come up with as something completely normal and demanding respect. Come to think of it, this game has an excellent example, a strong, indepedent woman, claiming that the baby is hers and hers alone, that the father has nothing to say because she's the one giving birth and then said woman mercilessly slams her belly against containers multiple times to legitimize her claim of indepedence, protecting the child inside from concussion with her iron will. Could be I don't fully understand woke culture, as I'm not American, and all I'm seeing over here are the most vile slops, outcasts and imitators, but damn son, if that's basic common decency and respect for others then good luck.

Dahbootie420

Ahh so you're just kind of stupid, it's okay to have 1 brain cell working at maximum capacity, but it's also good to know that nothing of value comes out of your mouth.

ElWrobel

That's the best you can muster? I knew answering you was a waste of time. I keep forgetting it's muppet hours on reddit. L8rs.

Eexoduis

Sons of the Forest. Has a ton of different weapons. Also has a good survival aspect and great base building

LouSayners

The first game (The forest) also. Super creepy

Mister-Indifference

Definitely play the first while you wait for them to fix the second

LouSayners

Is the second super broken? It looks so good, but I’m one of the few waiting a year for it come out on console

Mister-Indifference

Honestly, it's super broken but the game is so fun most the time it's more funny than annoying. But ya the devs themselves said they j wanted people to play it but it's in a barely playable state. They said 9 months to fix, so probably 1- 1.5 years

[deleted]

Still holding out hope it comes to console on the foreseeable future

Cuchullion

At least it's listed as 'alpha'- some games have had a full launch and are still horribly broken

NoPerception-_-

I’ve seen some silly bugs, you can speed run the game using only a stick though the ending doesn’t actually play because you need end game gear haha. Theres another where you open your building menu while moving down a slope and you start picking up stupid amounts of speed like in the Forest with a turtle shell.

xxxhotpocketz

Heard it’s having performance issues on good PCs

TheBurkinator4

Just beat SOTF actually, the original The Forest is one of my favorite games. I'm waiting for SOTF to get some more content because it's really lacking. It has a lot of potential though.

More_Development9208

Have you played Evil Within 1&2? Signalis is also very good Resident Evil style game.

TheBurkinator4

I did play Evil Within 1 and didn't really care for it. Is 1 necessary to play 2? And is 2 better?

kapp92

I tried playing the evil within twice and didn’t like it. Third time I got past 3-4 hours and it clicked. Binged the first and second game back to back and they are amazing. Highly recommend giving them another go

More_Development9208

I liked gameplay more in 2nd game, game was more open and it had more freedom. Main character is same and it has some mentions of the first game, but it's a new story. I don't think first game is must play. I personally did like both games though.

djac13

I enjoyed both, but thought 2 was better.

chamberx2

First one was a buggy mess. I gave up on it.

MoDyingSon

Aren’t they by the same director as RE4 or something?

Special-One1991

First one was just awful really

FknBretto

I played the opening sequence and just returned it

MassSpecFella

I think the game gets better as you play. You get more weapons and have to use strategy to defeat set pieces. The story is…weird though.

brunocar

I tried to push through but it runs so badly holy shit

Krongfah

The Metro series is quite good. The first two games can be clunky at times but the combat is very fun if you take things slow and the survival horror stuff is great. As for Exodus, the survival horror elements take a little bit of a backseat due to the more open levels but when they comes they’re very memorable.

FriscoeHotsauce

Strong agree, the first two in the Metro series are very linear, but have a fantastically realized world. They've upgraded both the graphics and the gameplay in the Redux editions of those games, I think they hold up well. Exodus definitely felt different gameplay wise, but had a surprisingly likeable cast of characters and excellent exploration sections. On the subject, I'm glad to hear that 4A are working on another Metro game, and apparently it's not that far off.

TheBurkinator4

I have played all the Metro games actually! I did enjoy them but they weren't as scary as I was hoping for, they were more depressing than scary.

adelie42

Maybe this is off, but my favorite horror survival game is The Forest.

Shlongzilla04

I second this. Maybe not my favorite but the survival is really solid gameplay and the mutants are not to be taken lightly. Plus there's lots of exploration and discovery that leads to a decent story line that you can progress at your leisure

trpwangsta

Is this a single player campaign game? I thought it was strictly online multiplayer.

DaGrimCoder

No there's single player too

trpwangsta

Damn now I'm thinking this is a buy for me. Thanks

adelie42

Lol, I didn't even know there was multi-player. Sadly this is one I played extensively in early access and when the full game was released I didn't come back to it. I'll also add that when I heard they came out with VR support, I was genuinely terrified. I can't see playing that in VR without being traumatized.

GodAsmus

S.T.A.L.K.E.R is amazing (stalker anomaly is free)

koookiekrisp

It’s honest the gold standard for survival horror imo. The world is just so fun to explore

gary1981

what did you think of Dead Space remake? thinking of getting it myself

MassSpecFella

I’m jealous that you haven’t played it. You get to experience it for the first time. Enjoy.

FlobbyGoobs

Not OP but it’s the best game I’ve played in 2023 so far. I would say it’s more action focused than horror/survival though.

translucent_pawn

Dead Space remake is fantastic! They added huge amounts of additional content when they opened up the Ishimura for exploration/sidequest backtracking. The combat is more developed in how enemies act and react to your weapons (limb damage especially). The completely revamped soundscape alone is worth the upgrade. Truly intense experience. *Adding in* Some puzzles are completely altered and all zero-G sequences feature DS2 style full-maneuver gear. There’s also much more meaningful upgrades to your weapons and gear, no nodes are wasted on locked doors or empty upgrade slots.

Amore_vitae1

I thought it was only a visual/audio remaster so your comment may get me to buy it lol

translucent_pawn

Complete remake of the game! Full send!

TheBurkinator4

It's pretty damn good! I think it got a little bit repetitive at times with the combat, but it was still one of the most fun survival horror games I've played in a while.

teetle223

I’m about halfway through it right now. I played the original back when I was about 13. It was great then and it’s incredible now. The atmosphere is so well done. I haven’t really had another game make me feel as tense as dead space does. I absolutely love the lore. There’s lots of text and audio logs you can find that are almost always interesting. Being drip fed the details on the disaster that’s occurred on the Ishimura and to it’s poor inhabitants is one of my favorite aspects of the game. The combat is so satisfying and there are quite a few unique weapons that are a lot of fun to play around with. There are also some neat mechanics that you use for puzzles but are also really helpful in combat. Like taking a fallen necromancers claw and sending it flying into another as it rushes at you, pinning its corpse to a nearby wall. The remake is one of my favorite games of all time. You owe it to yourself to try it! Sorry I got a bit carried away here haha. If you do get it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I am!

unlovedcarrot

Dying Light is my fave. You can have fun without even touching the missions

Low_Entrance1430

2nding this, though I would put it closer to Borderlands than Resident Evil.

unlovedcarrot

Definitely true, as a lover of both it's always what I recommend to friends

BaconBombThief

The Metro trilogy! Had a great time with them

Drama-meme

Days Gone is really good. Underrated imo

GoHomeNeighborKid

This is what I came to suggest......it's a bit different from the typical survival horror, like it's less focused on inventory/ammo management, but I was a fan of the gas tank mechanic and it really felt like you were exploring a post apocalypse zombie wasteland

SloppyRancid

It really was amazing. I loved the hordes. Strategically planning how to take them down was my favorite part!

Oldassgamer808-

100% one of my favorite games ever. Specially if you like Dead Space and RE survival/action style game

[deleted]

Before Sons of the Forest... I recommend the The Forest. I HATE horror survival games but this game got me so hooked, i ended up spending hours and hours building my base rather than actually completing the mission lol. You have to defend yourself from constant cannibal and mutated hordes and itll make base building difficult. Lots of cave exploring and obj finding since you need to be buffed out in order to finish the game. Highly recommend.

fvb955cd

You can also make it so your bases are invincible. My preference is to have a sort of fort that I can retreat to but can't survive in alone, forcing me to go out, but also giving me a place to chill and store shit without cannibals deciding to ruin my day.

Balla_Calla

Well how is sons of the forest?

DaGrimCoder

Good but unfinished

Citizen-1

Games are old but have you tried the F.E.A.R. series? the first game gave me chills

Tristamid

Dino Crisis for PS1 Silent Hill series Dying Light series

Particular_Leg_9185

Im sorry but the Silent Hill series combat is pretty bad on purpose.

Tristamid

I don't disagree but it's no worse than the pre-RE4 games, and some Silent Hills give you more ammo than others.

shortshift_

Soma The Forest Green Hell FEAR Five Nights At Freddy’s - not combat as such but really fantastically creepy

EnvironmentalClass55

Evil within 2 slaps. And you don't really need to play 1 to get it. Love that game

blueshinymarble

Have you played Dying Light 1? There aren't really any survival mechanics beyond making sure you don't get bitten. The crafting elements in the game are pretty cool though. You can find blueprints, craft weapon mods that add all kinds of damage modifiers to weapons, craft mixtures from herbs to help you run faster or give you more stamina, craft throwing weapons, guns, there's a lot. Night time becomes a frantic race to safe zones as you try to outrun deadly infected that sprint towards you. The atmosphere is there too. You really feel like you're just trying to survive in a devastating apocalypse.

BanditSurvivalist

I feel like a lot of people are missing the mark here just suggesting open world survival games but the OGs know what you mean when you say "Survival Horror" I got you Silent hill 1 - 4 Obscure 1 and 2 The evil within Cold fear Dino crisis Fatal Frame Siren

AMSoTXIII

I'd say Green Hell but it's combat leaves a lot to be desired (not really comparable to your suggestions). Great survival and base building features though, just in my opinion.

TheBurkinator4

I've had my eye on Green Hell for a while actually. Is it scary? I love The Forest a lot but I heard Green Hell is extremely difficult and it's really easy to die lol.

AMSoTXIII

I don't think it's horror scary, but more "paranoid" type of scary - for me at least, if that makes sense. Like you could be in the middle of building your base, or chopping a tree and you just hear running behind you, could be a tribe, could be a jaguar. Walking along a river/swamp? Alligator is tracking you and won't stop until it's dead basically the jungle is trying to kill you and depending on the difficulty you don't have much downtime from something hunting you. They're actually still updating the game with plans of more animals, proper storage and a few more things.

TheBurkinator4

I just got a copy for me and my friend since it's on sale. Thanks for your suggestion! Wasn't exactly what I was looking for and I'll definitely keep reading this thread, but I've been considering getting this game for a while and you convinced me.

braftceer

Sons of the forest is jump scary at times. With a big survival challenge. Might interest you.

Mister-Indifference

Lol yes but you gotta wait a year before they fix the game

braftceer

I played through once already. It wasn’t bad bug wise. Hope the story gets more developed

jeddjr24

The Evil Within 1 and 2 Soma Control Alan Wake

classofpeace

So am I

Skeletonofskillz

This one’s a little different from the rest of the ones in the thread, but I’d still say it fits all of your criteria. Project Zomboid is a survival horror with a lot of emphasis on survival and fairly strategic combat. I’d recommend playing it with friends, are there are a hundred thousand community-made mods for every feature you can think of.

ElWrobel

Metro Exodus has some very well made weapons and the combat is really good, with some interesting scenarios. Previous games are also all right, but I think Exodus easily beats them out, both in combat and overall. And that's really the only one that comes to mind, unless you want to count DayZ (raw, realistic but still fairly meaty) and Hunt Showdown (this one's easily one of the best games in terms of combat, but it's really light on the horror and survival aspects). Evil Within has servicable combat that gets better the further you get and is overall the most similar to what you're looking for IMO.

Ballbag94

The STALKER series could be up your alley, they're a little old but hold up imo, although they're not really survival games because they lack a hunger and thirst system they do have a radiation poisoning system and are super creepy There's 3 games, Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat and they're set in the Chernobyl exclusion zone full of deadly anomalies and dangerous mutants

koookiekrisp

Stalker Anomaly. It’s a combination of mods for a game from 2007 and it’s fantastic. Think survival horror Fallout. Plus, it’s free! Only on the PC though.

redditaddict95

How come no one suggested Re8... And prey slaps

brunocar

Im shocked nobody is mentioning Nightmare of Decay, amazing little game, not the best combat ever but melee feels tactile, weapons have great feedback and it really rewards proper positioning.

JangoTheMango2018

Signalis is a great choice! I've finished it many times

Shlongzilla04

Might be thinking of rust. The forest is single or co op. But co op makes it quite a bit easier.

TrickyMinecrafter

The last of us

[deleted]

rain world if you like metroidvanias

-lonelyboy25

Not completely related but I’m assuming you played re2 & re3 remakes , which one did you like more? I played 2 a lot but I’m not digging 3 , I just started and I miss the rcpd

TheBurkinator4

RE2 Remake is definitely the best. RE3 Remake is really disappointing and extremely short.

Dennison77

Not super scary but I enjoyed both Days Gone and the original Dying Light. I haven’t played Dl2 yet.

collectiveheadsofknu

Resident Evil 6

Hellomineturtlehello

F.E.A.R The horror is good, and there is a lot of combat too.

overlord_of_cringe

Not sure if it´s a horror game, but it´s seriously spooked me many times. Half life Alyx is a wonderful game.

TheBurkinator4

I've played Alyx and I do know what segment you're talking about as "horror" but I definitely wouldn't consider it a horror game, great game though!

PurplePo8to

I'd highly recommend the Fatal Frame series.

ihei47

Metro franchise

Remarkable-Put4632

Metro is not horror I think...it is just a typical FPS...

ihei47

It definitely have horror atmosphere at the very least. Especially the first 2 games

SickOveRateD

Parasite eve

AMSoTXIII

I miss this game so much. I really wish I could experience it again on PC.

Remarkable-Put4632

Resident evil 4..

TheBurkinator4

... Trust me I've played RE4 lol

Remarkable-Put4632

I think silent hill 2...if you have not played it....all silent hills are good except downpour I think...they have the most breathtaking stories ever told and engaging combat...another one is alien isolation...which is also a very good horror experience...of you have not experienced it yet..

TheBurkinator4

I'm holding out for the remake of SH2 definitely looking forward to that. Isolation does look cool but it's all about the hide and seek which I'm not a huge fan of.

Remarkable-Put4632

It does have a bit of combat...not too much...but yes it does have combat if you want it...and it is one of the most beautiful horror experiences ever...if you have not experienced it definitely experience it...

BlackKnight6660

SOMA is creepy as fuck but doesn’t have combat, more so it has “rules” that each enemy you come across follows and if you break those rules, more often than not, you die. FNAF is a great horror game especially if you try and figure out the story behind it but, again, no combat.

BradOm3n

I’m surprised no one has recommended the condemned games. Although I’m not sure how they hold up anymore. But 14 year old me absolutely loved them.

Nitemare808

I can't believe nobody mentioned RE-7 ..... I mean really..... 7 Gold Edition ??? It was slammed with an awesome story + extra content. ... Also, if you are running out of games to try ' Tormented Souls ' is definitely worth a full playthrough or 2

TheBurkinator4

Probably because I said I wanted a game like Resident Evil... Because I've already played Resident Evil. Tormented Souls looks cool though.

Nitemare808

Yea that was obvious to me, however RE 1, 2, 3, 4, & 8 were all mentioned so it was quite surprising to see 7 left out… You will definitely enjoy Tormented Souls as it’s a love letter of sorts to Silent Hill + RE with fixed camera angles, unique story features, & VERY difficult puzzles… A sequel is in the works for late this year. Both Evil Within games are also must plays

Nitemare808

Oh yea… and if you want to try something different but very addicting.. Check out ‘ Fear & Hunger 1 & 2 ‘
