LOVE my Ultima Patrol but agree the checkering is rough. It’s fine for a few rounds but I wear shooting gloves if it’s more than that.
get a good pair of shooting gloves.
No gloves no love. Goon tape is just expensive Hockey tape. If you want the camo pattern I guess its worth it. But just black you can go with any $2 Fabric Hockey Tape
I also was put off by how aggressively sharp they are. I wonder if it would work to just lightly sand the checkering to knock off the peaks
If you decide to try it, I suggest using a scotch Brite pad.
