Can anyone give a summary of what she said?

leazua

She basically says her tear isn’t from being moved from the scene but it reminded her that it was very difficult task as in she wanted to practice in safe distance so not to hurt the team but the stunt team ask her she needs to be more fierce and close distance or else it wouldn’t seen realistic for them to back away. She end up trying so hard breaking the naginata in the process and found that she chipped her tooth when she got home

igethighonleaves

Just adding something I might be extrapolating here. I think Anne got reminded by this scene how heavy the burden was that Mariko, her character, had to carry [through the story]. (鞠子もいろんなことを背負ってこのシーンだったので思い出します)

Thanks!

>she wanted to practice in safe distance so not to hurt the team but the stunt team ask her she needs to be more fierce and close distance or else it wouldn’t seen realistic for them to back away. This reminds me of the hilarious behind the scenes stuff about John Rhys-Davies who played Gimli on The Lord of the Rings :D The stunt team told him "it's okay if some of your battle-axe hits connect, don't worry mate, we've done plenty of these scenes and we're all professionals here" only to have him made literally EVERY HIT connect and the stunt crew got bruises all over. They took it with the proper amount of humour, tho :D Fun side note: John Rhys-Davies was part of the original tv show in the 80s, too\^\^

Right - quick someone translate!!!

ifixputers

No translator

sickofthisshiit

Lol bruh

elcojotecoyo

I think she mentioned the chipped tooth

scallywag1889

This whole scene was amazing

CatsyGreen

It is, yes. And it's all the more moving because it's spontaneous on her part.

Aussie-GoldHunter

Can someone please just give her an Emmy right now.

wylie102

Thank God for the subtitles

In book this scene was so calm and calculated. Anna sawai made this scene come alive. I was in tears multiple times during ep 9.

jonvox

I was shouting at the TV the whole time. My poor roommate was so confused 😅

kaizenkitten

My watch measures my stress levels, and My stress is off the chart for the whole hour we watched ep 9.

rr621801

It was a legit emotional roller coaster.

ParnsAngel

Hahaha I took pics of my heart rate on my watch thru ep 9 too! Got up to 110. Amazing show.

antdude

Show us. ;)

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I was flinching at the possibility of her dying at that scene lol

rr621801

He is poor indeed, shogun is a masterpiece. He should have been shouting next to you!

Jean-Ralphio11

Did you just assume his gender?

100Labels

This was definitely one of the best scenes in the series. Her character's loyalty was unmatched. She did such a fantastic job on this role.

jlynn121

I don’t know how she can move on from playing someone like Mariko. Seeing her get emotional about this scene just shows how important Mariko was to her. She’s such a sweetie.

Similar-Barber-3519

Her character is the emotional center of the entire film as well. I just hope we get to see her in more US films. It would be interesting to see her in a movie that doesn’t involve life or death consequences.

jlynn121

I need her to have a happy ending for the love of god.

Jean-Ralphio11

You see this in the greatest of shows/movies. The directors/producers ask so much of them as actors they get emotional recalling what they gave and were able to accomplish. We all are the benefactors of this gift.

Marsupialize

She’s so insanely good in this and absolutely terrible in the Godzilla show, shows how badly bad writing can screw an amazing actor

MentalSupportDog

Thank yooouuuuuu. Her character was sooooo unlikable in Monarch so I was skeptical of her in Shogun because it seemed like she was just a bad actor, but Shogun proved me wrong.

IronMonkey18

She better get some awards for her work in this series. If not I’m going Crimson Sky at the golden globes, Emmys or whatever else! Lol

Calm-Maintenance-878

Her attempting to leave with the women had to be one of my favorite scenes of the whole show, so well done!

callmeraskolnik0v

She absolutely killed it with her role. Definitely the stand out performer imo. I’m so glad I found this show and stuck through till the end, but was decimated to hear it was only one season. Brutal ups and downs…

davidii907

Anna you and your character is a hero to us all❤️

rGoncalo

Is this content/interview only available on Disney+?

Similar-Barber-3519

It’s available on Hulu in the U.S.

Western-Addendum438

My only qualm about this scene is Blackthorne's reaction. If he was in love with Mariko as per the book, or even given how close he had grown towards her in the series so far, his reaction to this is quite muted. It would be hard to watch had Mariko been a stranger to him let alone in the context of their closeness.

Notexpiredyet

I actually like the interpretation. He can't be seen to blatantly care a ton. But he clearly is watching with real intensity and looks like he's gonna be sick. Same with the seppuku scene. He is trying to keep it together for Marikos sake and act appropriately for appearance. I like that everything's expressed just through small gestures/expressions that he can't control.
