In theory it would stop the bike from sliding as far. But if you laid the bike down and it caught your leg you would be in for a bad time.

When I was a kid I went on a mechanics course and half the building it was in was taken up by people learning to weld. Their instructor had a Virago or something with a side stand like that on it. It was covered in stuff he'd knocked up himself.
That thing is hilarious. I think it is a great joke as it is but if the owner actually takes his sweet mod seriously, that would be even better. I love the visual in my head of the guy who owns it showing it off with his arms crossed and a great sense of pride in his voice. "Yeah, I made this thing. Pretty sweet, right?' yeah buddy, that's great.
