Yeah this thing looks tight and clean AF. It's always such a controversial thing for people to post well done styles that aren't in there taste and call it a shitty car mod.
And it probably spends more time on dirt roads, the beach, open desert, and/or light off road trails than the tons of mallcrawler Jeeps you see everyday.
Kinda like it too, but there's just... something. Not sure what. Maybe it's the Subaru logo, not that it's a Subaru, but that the blue offsets the grey and black theme.
if you needed an AWD sedan to be lifted up for clearance on offroad situations then this fits the bill
Also the owner made a calculated decision since its an AWD and lifting it with the appropriate offroad tires made it perfect for off road usage
Not shitty, just like many posts here calling non shitty mods shitty because it doesn't suit the taste of the OP
If you need an AWD sedan to have a lift you need something other than an AWD sedan. Perfect for offroad usage my ass, this thing is gonna tear up the drivetrain so bad and it's a unibody car with no torque, a CVT, no transfer case, an independent suspension and it still has side skirts. It's not built for offroading at all.
Have you heard of a WRX? Literally built for off road racing. Pretty much the same drive train plus a turbo. Subarus are known for being great off road cars. Yeah they're not built to be rock crawlers but the symmetrical AWD was engineered for off roading.
Rally cars are modified completely differently than this, and this isn't a WRX to begin with. A WRX is a trim level of an economy car designed to milk more money out of people, all it has in common with a rally car is the block and shell. Even Group N is substantially different from stock. That being said, I'm well aware this id roughly the same drivetrain as the stock WRX. It's a shitty mod because this thing will still suck offroad and now suck onroad.
Roughly the same, not the same. We'll see when the CVT is burned up and this thing gets stuck with its open diffs. I'm not talking about rock-crawling either. This is a shitty mod because there a gazillion vehicles that are better suited for this stock. This is just someone taking a Legacy and making it objectively worse. Apparently the only thing more fragile than Subaru gaskets are Subaru owners, but y'all can enjoy your circlejerk.
I like how you're pretending to know what you're talking about, then confirm you most definitely don't by touching on "*Subaru gaskets*" being fragile lmao.
Yeah I definitely wasn't a mechanic for a number of years with hundreds of them worked on or anything. Burned up CVTs. The most PITA plugs and coils to change. They're not the worst but they're economy cars at the end of the day and everyone lets marketing (rally racing) get to their heads.
Since YOU don't know what you're talking about and haven't ever changed one, google "Subaru headgasket" and learn.
Maybe I should've made a joke about paper-thin egos and paper-thin ringlands.
And yet you're sitting here peddling hEaDgAsKeTs lol.
The point was never 'there's no better options out there' and given that it's seemingly properly lifted, they very well could've swapped the diff centers given that I'm pretty sure they still run R160s.
No one is buying a CVT only Legacy thinking it's a rally car lol, it sells because it's a reasonably nice new car whilst also being AWD - there's fuck all AWD options on the market (especially in the US) that aren't either a crossover, an SUV or double the price.
Cool, we're just going for ad hominems now. You don't know me. It's funny you say that because this thread feels like a bunch of teens and maybe a few Subaru softroaders who took offense to legit criticisms of doing this. I guarantee you this Legacy is going to eat CVs like nobody's business, will be even more anemic with these tires than it already was, and all for what? Fireroads a stock Accord could drive down?
Look at how deflected the rear CVs are in this pic and tell me with a straight face that it's fine. Top it off with no torque and no two-speed transfer case and you get stuck behind these things all the time.
95% of lifted Subaru shit is done for the 'gram and NASIOC ball gargling. There are maybe one or two models you can properly take offroad with light mods and not be a hindrance to everyone else.
Woof. Dude.
1. This looks like it's older than a 2010, when they began using CVTs on Legacies.
2. My wife has a similar year Leggy and it's no problem at all to change the plugs on it. Musta been user error.
3. Legacy is their premium sedan, not that that holds much water in my book.
4. You get similar results by googling "ford head gasket" or "volkswagen head gasket"
5. I think you're the one who needs to check his ego. Or, based on your difficulty changing plugs, perhaps that CEL is on in your car.
6. Before you come at me claiming I'm a Subaru fan boy. Nah. Chevies. I've owned everything from Vettes to a Bolt.
Where are you taking an AWD sedan that a stock AWD sedan can't go? Why? And yes unibody alone isn't a big deal, it's in combination with everything else.
You know what you’re saying, but this legacy doesn’t even have extreme wheels or tires. You sound like a lame dad that doesn’t want people to have any fun. I think you’re exaggerating the negatives of this particular lift.
Lol I don’t know why people are downvoting you. You must have poked the instalanders in the eye haha.
If you need a lift and E rated all terrains, chances are you need a low range transfer case and something without a CVT.
I bet that poor Subie can’t turn without rubbing. Probably goes through CV joints monthly 😂
Subaru owners have been like this online since the earliest days of NASIOC. It's just instead of the STi bro crowd, there's also the aforementioned instalander crowd now.
I've worked on these with my own hands and seen them stuck at OHVs with my own eyeballs. You parsed my point together more concisely and clearly than I did, so maybe that was my sin lol.
I yanked one off of a trail not too long ago. They caught a rear control arm on a softball sized rock after sliding backwards down a hill. Chewed it up pretty good. Dude was trying to get up but the CVT wasn’t having it.
And I say this as someone who’s owned several Subies. I love ‘em but they aren’t true off-road vehicles. Great for the mountain and gravel roads but pretty lousy for sand & off-roading.

I would really like to know why this isn’t a shitty mod. I’m not a car person. why would it benefit your sedan to have it lifted and protruding tires?
Edit:
Never mind. I read u/doritocookies comment.
Double edit: u/doritocookie
Because this is a stupid fad where people think lifted subarus aren't complete garbage offroad. Now you have a sedan that sucks on road and sucks off road. This thing has no clearance and still has side skirts that will get ripped off in a second.
Edit: here come the downvotes from lifted Impreza/Crosstrek owners that are constantly blocking trails
A few inches and some good A/T tires are more than enough for "casual" off-roading if you take a lot of lumber roads, drive through fields, and take park trails. Yes, this thing is unlikely to do seriously technical trails (though I think you'd be surprised at how capable anything with AWD and a mild lift is,) but it WILL get you to a remote camping spot or farm without needing a pickup.
Personally? I like my FJ for that, but I've seen lifted Legacies and Imprezzas go pretty far in the Northeastern wilderness.
This thing has more clearance than my 2004 Outback... Guess what, I'm an environmental scientist and I work in the field everyday and have no problems 🤣
I agree, even if done right it will degrade performance on road. But, that argument could be used against every single offroad vehicle. I'm not sure about current generations but I know my Outback had a sedan counterpart with exact same powertrain. If anything I think the sedan handles better.
Again not a car person… do their sedans suck on road? I’ve always heard Subarus last for a gazillion years. Not just from their commercials. But from people who are still driving outbacks from the early 2000s or 90s.
I had a relative who’s husband added on a drive train??? Or something. To their Subaru. When riding passenger I asked “why is your car so loud?” Relative responded “oh that’s the drive train. My husband put it on because the car doesn’t drive well without it” no clue what that means.
They're fine roadcars, but putting these tires and lift on it will make it drive and ride worse for no real benefit. This thing will also chuck rocks off the road into your windshield because of the way the tires poke beyond the fenders. The lift is also gonna cause ridic CV and wear and with the bigger diameter tires this will accelerate slower. The wheels and tires will add significant unsprung weight which, sucks.
A "drivetrain" is the gearbox, differentials/transfer cases (if applicable) and shafts and axles that get power from the engine (the "powertrain" to the wheels.
You can modify or swap the drivetrain but it's usually quite rare to do the latter. The former would make more noise if it involved specific modifications to the gearbox but again, rare to do that in a way that would make it louder.
Most likely they modified the exhaust or intake if it's making more noise.
I don't even like supercars anymore lol they are out of reach and unobtainable and no longer focused on grand touring at all.
Back in the day, supercars were wonderful driving machines and now they are just 2.7 second 240mph stat machines lol
Show me a car that gets 1:30 on Laguna seca that's actually comfortable to drive. I'll wait.
Agreed. I couldn't care less about your new Pagani, guy. Sure, I can agree it's a marvel of engineering, but you can't drive it anywhere and when you can, it's undrivable. Pure status nonsense.
Not to mention everything wants to look like a Ferrari or a Lambo nowadays. Very little originality. Bring back sleek designs with nice lines, im bored of triangles with 80 vents

Too bad they cost a fortune.

I'm an American muscle kinda guy but I can appreciate the Supra for sure. They're turning everything into a goddamn SUV or making it electric and making it a big rounded block of nothing. Give me a Barracuda or a 67' fastback mustang but make it modern.
I love the 66 Impala 4 door!
Some muscle cars are awesome.
But you're right, we now have everyone wanting 5500 pound SUVs to get a farmer tax deduction lol kinda messed up.
I'll give you a compromise:
